I have used this player for a few weeks now and it is so awesome! Love the speakers, there is no "tin" sound and the base is really powerful for the size of the speakers. CD Clock Radio with Dual Alarm and Digital Am/fm Tun

• Philips AJ3977/37 CD Clock Radio with dual alarm and digital AM/FM tuning w/preset stations

This clock is nice looking, it has two independent alarms, CD and radio playing capability, sleep mode, and a 5 minute snooze. Either the CD or radio or high-pitched beep (simple beeps, not that screeching buzzer that still makes the hair on my neck stand on end) can be used with either alarm.

That much is great, and if you are looking for those features, buy this clock radio.

The cons:

--Usability is poor and unintuitive. For example: when you're setting an alarm, you hit the Alarm 1 button once to bring up the blinking time setup. You also see which alarm mode is currently active. If you set the time, then notice you need to change the mode (beeps, CD, radio) and change it immediately afterward, the time goes back to how it was before.

--Button to turn alarm off (not snooze) along with other buttons used to activate alarm settings are small and impossible to use in the dark, even if you have a good idea of where they are.

--No gradual alarm volume increase. When I get blasted out of bed by a sudden horrific onslaught of noise I'm much more likely to scramble for the snooze rather than actually get up. This is a feature all modern alarms should have as an option.

--CD wake mode can only play first track of CD!!! If you don't want to wake up to different tracks of your favorite CD you have to reburn the CD in a different track order.

I hate this product.

I recently moved and wanted some kind of small, simple CD player in my bedroom. I also wanted something relatively inexpensive. After a lot of shopping around, I settled on this CD player/clock radio. The clock radio aspect was a nice bonus, as I wanted another clock for the bedroom as well.

The unit takes up very little space on my nightstand with the vertical form factor. The unit doesn't look exactly like the product picture on Amazon, but it's similar. The controls are mostly easy to figure out, and it has a battery compartment in case the power goes out (two AA batteries). The display is readable from a distance, and overall the unit is attractive. It is also inexpensive.

Unfortunately, the goodness ends there. The negatives:

1. To play a CD, you must turn the unit on. Pressing 'play' without turning the unit on doesn't work.

2. The display is so bright I have to turn it away from my bed at night--even on the dimmest setting it is far brighter than my bright red LED clock radio.

3. The speakers are terrible. Even playing simple acoustic guitar music (Windham Hill variety) causes a lot of vibration. I am surprised by this: Yes, the unit is cheap and has small speakers, but I am still disappointed--I wouldn't expect Philips to make such a bad sounding unit. My 10 year old $20 clock radio sounds better than this. Even turning up soft piano music to a volume audible more than 4 ft from the unit results in very bad sound.

4. The unit makes a fluttering noise when the CD is rotating, with a grinding-and-hiss combination noise when it spins up the CD. In the morning, I am usually awakened by the grind, rather than my music. Sometimes it makes a lot of noise as it switches from one track to another. All of this happens with various CDs that have been treated well and handled carefully.

5. When manually starting to play a CD (such as to fall asleep to), there's a good 30-45 seconds that it's impossible to check the time of the alarms! Pressing the alarm buttons just don't do anything. This is just silly.

I have bought some pretty poor products from time to time over the years, but I do think it is fair to say that this is one of the worst uses of my money ever. I wasn't expecting a heck of a lot, but I still ended up very disappointed.

It's not clear the competing products are much better, but I would not recommend this product to anyone. :-(

cd player worked great... dual alarms and battery back-up worked great... but you can't read the stupid thing in the dark. i have perfect vision, but even when it was just a couple of feet from my face it was unreadable. the alternative is to turn on the backlight... which lights up the room like a christmas tree and makes it impossible to sleep. whoever designed it should be demoted to the janitorial staff. mine went in the garbage after less than a month because i would have felt bad dropping it off at goodwill to torture someone else.

I own two Philips CD/Alarm Clocks that work great. When I needed a 3rd, the original one's I owned had been discontinued. I found this model and thought that since Philips made it and the other models I had worked great, that I would go ahead and purchase it. Bad move.

The lighting is horrible. The functionality is poor. Most important, the sound quality is beyond poor. I would compare it to what I would imagine speakers from a 62 Nova that has been sitting out in the rain for the last 40+ years would sound like. I would recommend not purchasing this item.

The blue display light is far too bright. Also, radio reception is poor and Am is constantly hissing. I highly suggest buying a different model

My son, who is deaf, requires the bed-shaker feature of the Sonic Boom alarm clock so he doesn't have to rely on others to awaken him for class, work, whatever; it gives him another degree of independence. He has had a Sonic Boom alarm clock since he was in elementary school, and he is now in college. The clock not only has a piercing alarm, but you can also plug in a light that will flash along with the alarm, as well as the bed-shaker vibrator. Each feature can be set to function separately or in unison with either or both of the other functions. We needed to replace his old clock simply because the receptacle on the clock that receives the bed vibrator plug was broken after "someone" tripped over the cord because the clock was on the floor; the vibrator still worked, but it could no longer be plugged in. What the product description DOESN'T say, however, is that an older version of the bed vibrator WILL NOT work with a new version of the clock (even though the clock looks & functions exactly the same as the former version, except that now it's white instead of black); the plug was re-designed. When you buy the clock & vibrator at the same time, it's considerably cheaper than buying the two items separately. Though I had only purchased the clock, NexGen Products later sold me the new version of the bed vibrator for the much lower combination price, as if I had ordered the clock & vibrator together in the first place. (I did, though, have to pay an additional shipping charge.) Thank you, NexGen.

I am hard of hearing (2 hearing aids). I could sometimes sleep through the alarm of my old battery powered alarm if I happened to be sleeping on my better ear and had only a few hours of sleep. Pretty annoying since I am actually a fairly light sleeper. I bought the sonic boom expressly to prevent this possibility. I did not get the bed shaking attachment but do have a 60 watt lamp plugged in to the alarm. The combination of shrill alarm sound and flashing light are plenty to wake me up.

Growing up deaf, I had to rely on my mother to get me up every morning for school. Regular alarm clocks couldn't do the job. Now that I'm in college away from home, I had to come up with an alternative means of waking up on time. I found this Sonic Alert Sonic Boom alarm clock, and I love it! I have 4 internet radios... this was by far the most inexpensive and I purchased it for bedside.

Overall, not bad at all... but some points you are going to want to be aware of: this is not for the inexperienced wifi user. Definitely not one for the parents. The interface is just too challenging. And any unit with those "touch and wipe" controls is going to frustrate a novice.

Next is the sound. Fine for bedside. But this is not a unit for primary listening. Essentially it is as advertised: "a bedside internet radio". And for the price, you can't go wrong. Just take a deep breath and use patience. The manual is ok.. it's executing the sequences that will lead you off the Ambien.

I paired the Siesta Flow with a computer speaker and subwoofer system to have a cheap Internet radio for my patio. I did not need the clock radio function, but this was the cheapest option I could find that also had built-in FM radio and auxiliary jack so I could also listen to songs on my phone. I was pleasantly surprised that this clock radio also has a USB charger.

Downside: The touch buttons to navigate are kind of a pain to use. I will probably also order the Pure One radio with radial knobs that should make changing channels easier. A remote would have been nice.

Strangely, this radio is advertised as a bedroom radio. Yet it sorely lacks many of the desirability of bedroom functions. To start with, it MUST have physical bottoms for memory presets to be accessed even in the dark. None! It needs some physical controls that one can "Feel" and use in the dark when his/her better half may be fast asleep. Not only does one need to turn the light on to find the controls, but, while intuitive, it simply is way time consuming to bother when one is ready to go to bed or trying to go to bed. The so called auto diming while not that bright, it does not dim to darkness like many of the competition do. What were the engineers thinking when they provided 5 physical buttons for Alarm settings and none for favourite presets? Lastly, while many people may like its size, I like to have a radio that won't slide all over whatever top it is placed on when one is pressing the control buttons. It is too small for my taste.

...if you can find it at a reasonable pice. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is a bit of a joke. Pioneer is selling it directly to consumers at less than half the MSRP, and I found it at my local big box members-only store for 70% off MSRP. I bought it on impulse, and I'm keeping it despite my three-star review, because I like it and I have the technical skill and patience to manage its ease-of-use issues.

If you want to get the maximum value for the features of this product, you had better be a geeky sort of gadget enthusiast, or have such a person handy. To wit:

* Bluetooth audio is neat, but setting up the connection is not a task Aunt Susie is ready for. And you'll probably never guess how to put it into pairing mode. "No device connected, press play to pair" in the display would have helped.

* Internet radio is neat, but it has a small screen and a clunky interface for browsing available stations. You can add custom stations to your radio by registering at a special website. That's neat, but not for the technologically meek.

* It has two distinct systems for bookmarking Internet radio stations. And the buttons on the remote for accessing these systems are labeled "CLASS," "T.EDIT," "PGM" and "CLEAR." I had to read the manual to understand how they work, and I'll have to spend 10 minutes explaining to my wife how to listen to NPR with this radio. This is a particularly disappointing shortcoming.

* Internet radio is achieved via a 10/100 ethernet connection. That's cool, but WiFi would have been nice.

* Since this is marketed to Apple people, it would be good if Apple's "it just works" AirPlay technology was supported. I imagine it is possible for this feature to be added via a firmware update, but I am not optimistic this will ever happen. That's a pity: this would easily be a four-star product with AirPlay support.

* It has the ability to wake you up in the morning. But setting this up is not trivial, and I suspect it doesn't make a reliable alarm clock. I won't be using it this way.

* Here's now you know you're in the future: this thing doesn't even have an FM tuner. Who needs radio: we have the Internet!

* It claims you can plug it into your "HDTV" to display photos or YouTube videos stored on your iPhone. This is accomplished using a composite video connector, which is guaranteed to look rather poor on an HDTV. Don't buy this for its video capabilities.

* Its support for DLNA is nice. But Apple doesn't have any interest in DLNA, so you can't use this feature to get access to your iTunes library, which is probably what you want if you're considering an Internet-enabled iPod/iPhone-compatible radio like this. Instead you have to set up a separate DLNA media server on a computer on your network and that's not something just anybody can (or wants to) do. Again, AirPlay support would make this a non-issue for the customers Pioneer is obviously targeting with this product (namely, Apple people).

* It has no battery backup for the clock. And even though it's on the Internet, it doesn't know how to use NTP to set its clock automatically.

* Most of the radio's features cannot be accessed without the remote. The designers probably felt fewer buttons on the unit would make it more attractive. I agree, but I still think it was the wrong decision.

Enough criticism. Here's what I like about this product:

* Two docks for iPhones/iPods. That's pretty neat. It can crossfade in shuffle mode between each one. That's kind of silly, but might be cool for parties or something.

* The sound quality is adequate, especially for its size. Unless you have very high standards, this can fill your room with music or news.

* Its fit-and-finish is quite good. It's a very attractive product.

* Although the setup process wasn't as easy as your Mom might like, it's really great to be able to listen to podcast or Internet radio stations on this. Our local NPR station's program stream sounds great, and no more FM static.

* If you use this device to listen to music on your DLNA server or on a USB drive, it claims support for a wide variety of formats, including FLAC. I don't need FLAC support myself, but I suspect there are certain people who will appreciate the device's wide format support.

* It doesn't specifically claim to support the iPhone 4, but it works fine.

So to summarize, it's a cool radio that--just like me as a schoolchild--doesn't quite live up to its potential. If you can find it at a bargain price, go for it.

12/9/2011 Edited to add: Pioneer has just announced the X-SMC3-S Music Tap and X-SMC4-K Elite Music Tap, each of which has WiFi and AirPlay support. They'll be available in October but not at blowout prices.

Once I upgraded my iPhone to iOS 6, the unit started displaying 'Unable to Communicate'. Bluetooth no longer works either. I have 2 of these XW-NAC3-Ks, they both fail in the same way. Emailed Pioneer customer support on the issue and I have not received any response at all after a week. Thumbs down on the product and thumbs down to Pioneer in general for not replying to customer inquiries.

I've been using this for last 3 weeks and I can really say that this dock has a superior quality of sound with a good build quality. I have 2 ipods, and so far I only tested with my ipod touch 3rd generation and some little issues I could realize. If I turn off the ipod, and stay with the dock turned on, the ipod stays flashing turning on and turning off. Another issue is if I turn off the dock and the ipod attached in it, the ipod don't get charging, ipod just charges if the dock is turned on. But beyond that is an excellent double dock with quality materials used in construction and a very good sound and refined as it is inherent in Pioneer.

I have had this XW-NAC3-K Pioneer unit for about 3 months and am very pleased with its function. Now, it is not going to fill a room with orchestra quality sound like large speakers will. But it is very capable as a bedroom, kitchen, or small to midsize room music system.

Yes you can dock 2 iPods or iPhones to it and listen to music for hours depending on your music files but I think the unit has other strengths beyond this.

The best part is built in Bluetooth capability. This makes for easy syncing from an iPad or smartphone from across the room. Then you are free from the docking port. Works well with a Pandora app also or any other smartphone music app wirelessly.

It also will play internet radio stations or network music but it must have a direct Ethernet connection to your home network since there is no built in Wifi.

Don't dismay if your home is not fully wired with CAT5e or the most advance CAT6 jacks and switches. Netgear makes a nice wireless bridge that can establish a WiFi connection between the Pioneer unit and your wireless router. Powerline adapters that use your home electrical wiring might also be an option but I have not tried these.

Scrolling through internet radio stations is done by geographic location or alphabetical by country or music type. It is not the most convenient but you get used to it. This is more hit and miss but when you find a station you like you can easily save it to a "Favorites" folder.

Since the display screen is small you only see a few lines of text. No album art can be displayed.

If you have music files on a network drive the device also will recognize them. You can scroll by artist name or album. iTunes files are not playable via a networked Apple computer as far as I can tell.

If you are looking for a music system that can play internet music from around the world plus have Bluetooth and iPhone (iPod), and other network music play this is a good unit for under $200.00 now. I would not pay more than this.

The sound is good but not great. Best for small to mid size rooms but not for any cavernous dance hall.
