Kaito Pocket-Size PLL Synthesized AM/FM Shortwave Radio, KA11

Kaito Pocket-Size PLL Synthesized AM/FM Shortwave Radio, KA11
  • 1,000 permanently stored preset memories (Will not lose even without battery inside radio)
  • 10-Level Signal strength indicator
  • 7 shortwave meter bands that covers from 5.8 to 18.1 MHz
  • 6 tuning options: frequency input, manual tuning, auto tuning, memory scan, random preset & ATS
  • Alarm Clock Display & Temperature Display

I wanted a small shortwave radio to take on a trip. Whenever I travel, I feel bad because my Sangean ATS-909 is a little too big to drag along. Besides size, cost was an important factor in my purchase decision. There were not many reviews for the Kaito KA11, but it had most of the features I wanted and overall Kaito radios have pretty good reviews.

I ordered the radio online for $54 including shipping. As advertised, the radio is extremely small. Although small in size, this radio is packed with features. Overall, the buttons/controls are nicely laid out. Using the radio is very intuitive, but you may need to crack open the manual to use some of the features such as the sleep timer and the alarm clock. The manual is easy to read, but obviously translated to English so some of the sentences require some patience to understand.

Features: The radio has 1000 memory locations (100 per page). You have the option to scan through the stored memory locations or just scan up/down by frequency. Even though the speaker is small, the radio still sounds good. Overall, sensitivity is decent and selectivity between strong adjacent stations is good. The radio displays both time and frequency. The backlight is orange and the LCD display is very easy to read. So far battery life seems very good. The left-side of the radio has an external antenna jack. The battery compartment door is attached...a welcome change. The package comes with an AC adapter, manual, ear bud headphones and a long-wire external antenna. If you use rechargeable batteries, it is possible to charge the batteries inside the radio (with the AC adapter).

The whip antenna stores inside the radio. I am not sure I like this feature. Sometimes the antenna sticks while trying to push it back into the radio. Hopefully this will become less sticky over time. To set the clock, you need need to take the batteries out of the radio momentarily. The rotary volume control is very sensitive. Unfortunately, this makes it fairly easy to go from low volume to extremely loud without much movement. I also do not care for the location of the volume control. When the radio is lying flat on a table, you cannot adjust the volume. The carrying strap is permanently attached to the radio. This is a small annoyance. Unlike similar radios in its class, there is no pop-out stand. In my opinion, the frequency coverage should have included the 60 meter band.

For future designs of this radio, I would like to see a slight change in memory functionality. If you manually punch in a frequency that is already in memory, I would like the behavior changed so it displays the memory location of that frequency. Right now, you have no way to know if a frequency is already in memory. There should also be an easy way to add a frequency to the next available memory location. Currently, you need to specify a memory location when saving a frequency. This increases the possibility that you may overwrite a memory location with a different frequency.

In summary, I really love my Kaito KA11 radio and I am very happy with the purchase. It is definitely a great feature-packed radio, especially for its size and price. Most of the issues discussed above are minor annoyances and definitely not reasons to avoid this radio.

PROS

1) The KA11 is a very small and highly portable PLL (Phase Locked Loop) Synthesized, fully capable digital AM(MW)/FM/SW radio receiver. The full digital tuning capability means that there is no need for frequency retuning once a station has been received with adequate strength, unlike the digital display readout for analog tuning on the very popular Grundig Mini300PE AM/FM/SW and many other digital display analog radios for example.

2) The KA11 is an excellent starter digital SW radio with numerous bells and whistles. It replaces the much simpler Single conversion PLL Kaito KA105 digital AM/FM/SW radio, yet is almost identical in its size and weight (see below). The KA105 is also a far less versatile unit since a smaller part of the FM and SW spectrum is available for reception compared to the KA11, etc.

3) FM selectivity: > 40dB

Noise limit sensitivity:

FM < 10 Microvolts

AM < 1 Millivolts/meter

SW < 20 Microvolts

4) On SALE now for $39.95 at Amazon with a small amount more for a Kaito 23 foot Reel antenna (which I also recommend), it is absolutely a terrific bargain.

5) It has a great signal strength meter (10 levels), 1000 nonvolatile storage memories, a travel lock button to prevent turning it on, a fine orange controllable back-light which is great for reading the display in the dark, clock and alarm functions, battery level and also a charging indicator and even the temperature around the unit. Some of the many buttons have multiple and very useful functions. It also has numerous ways to tune as well as store any received signals.

6) The sides have very simple controls too with a plug for an AC power source (also provided by KaitoUSA), one for an external antenna and one for a set of headphones (with a set of earbuds also provided with the system). It also has a very useful local/DX switch which increases the sensitivity when trying to receive weak SW and FM signals from distant stations (with DX standing for a distant station, D of unknown range and origin and with X, an unknown as in mathematics, yet to be explored).

7) The internally stored whip antenna works to bring in very distant and some weak SW and FM stations on this quite sensitive radio receiver. I like this system of storing the antenna within the radio very much and I have found if you are careful that it works quite well. Adding the Kaito external Reel antenna does not overload the unit as reported by some other reviewers (not on Amazon), but greatly enhanced the reception of weak and very distant signals.

8) It has a 90 day return period from KaitoUsa and a full 1 year warranty in North America. The unit seems exceptionally well built however and will probably last a long time if properly handled.

9) It is a great receiver for young and old listeners alike. It doesn't bother me at all that many of these stations are also now available on the internet. The thrill of receiving distant stations with a small portable receiver started for me as a kid with analog devices of much less capability. Believe me when I say that this almost new miniature portable and digital radio (first available in October 2006) is a technological revolution when you appreciate the Heathkits available when I was young!

10) I also suggest buying the Passport to Worldband Radio paperback book (with the 2008 edition now available). It is a yearly publication with monthly updates available on the internet and also available for purchase on Amazon. It has many useful reviews of all available digital SW receivers and advertising from the major radio producing companies. It also lists radio stations available globally (for listening in North America) as well as their transmitting frequencies, power and the time of their broadcasts, etc.

CONS

1) Very brief manual (which as noted by other reviewers is a very poor English translation), but all functions can be figured out with a little patience and rereading of the brief manual.

2) No batteries are provided (it takes 2 AA batteries that last a very long time even with the back-light and the batteries can readily be recharged within the unit if desired). Also no carrying pouch is supplied with the unit, but the AC adapter (110 V) is provided by KaitoUSA as noted earlier.

3) AM(MW) reception doesn't seem quite as good during the day as it is on FM or on SW, probably due to the very small and highly directional internal ferrite AM antenna (but this is just the nature of AM radio listening!). It is probably also because of a small amount of display synthesizer noise as noted by other reviewers. At night however very fine AM reception has been found here in the mountains of New Mexico. There are also some ringing and clicking type noises on the various SW bands that shouldn't be there either, but I have not found these interfering sounds too overwhelming a problem, especially considering that this is really a set for those new to this fun activity.

4) The volume control knob is analog and a bit sensitive, but with care it is still very usable. The noise level for listening to a good signal is quite different between the three band select options so I frequently have to lower the volume level quite a bit when going from SW back to FM or AM stations (for ear protection). Also, there is no bass control for listening to music as there is on the fancier Kaito units, but the KA11 still sounds quite acceptable on its small internal speaker. On earbuds or headphones it sounds excellent however and uses much less power to boot and also it won't disturb anyone around you in a work or in a commuting environment.

5) Only part of the full SW spectrum is provided, namely the 49 m to 16 m bands (Others have mentioned the unavailability of the 60 m band on the KA11 for example). So far I have received so many SW stations that I haven't even noticed the lack of availability of the really long wave bands (up to 120 m, but with very few stations broadcasting at these wavelengths). Usually the most distant stations are also available on multiple sets of frequencies so that the unit seems to fully cover everything you might want to try to listen too except perhaps for SSB (Single-side band used by ham radio operators) which is available on the more expensive and highly rated Kaito 1102 and Kaito 1103 (which has recently been redesigned as the Eton E5 or the Grundig G5) SW receivers.

6) Check the LCD screen out very carefully. On my radio, if looked at from angles off perpendicular, numerous small folds in the display material were clearly evident. They in no way affected actually using the radio, but it certainly made me question the quality control procedures used for evaluating an individual LCD display unit.

I bought one of these out of curiosity, and took a chance as there were no reviews anywhere on the net. I hope this one helps. I've still not had a chance to critically assess it's sensitivity, but it seems to fare well against my Sony 7600G on a whip. If you're a radio head like me, I say just go for it. I also have a Kaito WRX911 which a fine bed time radio to tune in the dark, but sometimes you just want to know what frequency you're on. In a nutshell, this unit is just fun because it packs so much in a miniature unit. It reminds me of a tiny YB400, and the display is clean well laid out. Audio, as expected is thin, yet with plenty of volume, and the included earphones sound very nice. I also like the paging memory storage. Once you get used to it, you can breeze in and out of all sorts of radio programs easily. Also, the memories are non-volatile, a nice touch. I don't like the antenna, as mine seems to have play in it, and "wags" a little once extended, but that's a small shortcoming. To sum it up, for about $60, you sure get alot of fun in a package that fits in your pocket. If you're a SWL, or a ham, I think you'd consider it required reading, or just another one worth a place in your collection.

This shirt pocket AM/FM/short wave radio is similar in size and performance to the very expensive Sony ICF-SW1, which has been discontinued for many years. It is a sensitive and selective radio, with a ton of features.

That being said, better performance can be found in the Kaito line for very little additional money. See my review of the Kaito 1102 or check out the amazing Kaito 1101. Both of these radios offer better performance, and since they are bigger, have larger, better sounding speakers.

If you need the compact size, and will use earphones most of the time, this is a good choice, sound quality through the earphones is very good (stereo in FM).

I am revising this review a number of years after it was written to reflect that fact that better radios are now available at this price point. The newer radios have better sensitivity and are easier to use. I find it hard to use all its features, or even to reset the time even after several years use, so I must say the ergonomics are poor. Currently my preference for small/inexpensive radios with SW capability is the Tecsun PL-360 which I have recently reviewed. Its performance is better (much better on AM) and is significantly easier to set-up and use. It has very different dimensions but still fits a shirt pocket. I am leaving the rest of the original review intact.

This radio is a clone of the Sony ICFSW1 which I also have, but which alas died after about 15 years operation. It's size, antenna, volume control location is identical and it even fits the Sony case. The Sony however sold for close to $300.00 and even now sells in the $200 region second hand.

When I first turned the KA11 on in a difficult reception area, I was immediately struck by the good FM reception. It reception seems comparable to the Sony in all bands using the pull-out or internal antenna. It may be slightly less sensitive in MW and slightly better in SW. The extra long wire antenna can be used to give a boost.

The Kaito has more features than the Sony, eg. 1000 vs 10 presets. I found it quite difficult to figure how to use these at first, because I kept trying to use the Sony method. Once I figured it out however it is very simple to use. As others note you need to send some time with the manual.

The speaker sound was better than I would have thought from some other reviews. It is slightly higher pitched than the Sony but slightly clearer too.

In short a fun radio with pretensions of being a serious SW radio.

After having this radio for a number of months now and travelling with it, I remain convinced that that it's FM and SW capabilities are as good as or better than the famed Sony ICFSW1.

I am still unclear about the AM reception. I am now sitting in Las Vegas listening to a Los Angeles news station coming in loud and clear. Now I know that AM can skip off the ionosphere, which is the primary basis for SW reception. However closer to LA the signal is worse, which is I assume the direct wave coming in, but still this seems pretty impresive AM.

My major quibble is the poorly written manual. This radio has some complicated, but neat features and there are places where the instructions are very unclear, missing key points, or even wrong.

Still this is a great radio and with the drop in price a great buy.

iLuv i177 Alarm Clock Speaker System for iPod (White)

iLuv i177 Alarm Clock Speaker System for iPod
  • Compatibility: iPod mini; iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G; iPod classic 4G, 5G, 5.5G, 6G; iPod touch 1G, 2G
  • Digital clock display with dual alarm function
  • High and low dimmer control
  • Sleep or wake to your iPod, AM/FM radio
  • Integrated universal dock for your iPod

** Update June 11, 2009 **

I just wanted to correct an error below where I indicated that the iLuv wasn't properly charging my iPod. I don't know what was happening when I was trying it out but I really have had no problem across 2 different iPods with charging since I posted the review.

Still can't think of any use for the remote however... :)

** End Update **

I picked up the black iLuv iPod speaker system after doing considerable research online. These reviews are pretty helpful so I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth so that you can know what you're getting.

By and large the other reviews agree with my experience. The sound quality is very good for a small unit. You want to pick a playlist before you go to bed otherwise you get whatever is randomly selected from your library (I presume this is due to my election to shuffle all songs in my iPod settings).

I don't have much use for the remote but it's nice that it's included and it works well when I *do* play with it.

The unit has performed excellently since I purchased it two months ago but I'll make some observations:

the rotating volume and tuning dials are apparently supposed to continue the click wheel paradigm from the iPod, but they do so mechanically and are often a little awkward to use.

do NOT count on the unit properly charging your iPod. It *does* charge it somewhat so the iPod seems to me like it will run indefinitely while attached to the unit. But I've found that the iPod is not fully charged when I pull it off the iLuv. Fortunately, realizing this, I just make sure that I plug in my iPod when working out in my gym or I leave it attached to my computer until it *is* charged when I'm picking up my podcasts in the morning. This may just be my unit but it was a low point in my commute when my iPod battery ran out of steam that first time before I realized what was going on. I'm pretty rigorous about ensuring that it's charged before I leave the house.

I agree with others that the minimum volume for alarms needs to be lower. It would also be nice if the volume ramp-up time could be adjusted. The unit comes on and fades up to the pre-selected volume pretty quickly.

Finally the lights, that dimmest setting may seem dim in the middle of the day, but it's pretty overwhelming in an otherwise pitch-black room. A "Glow" setting or similar would be nice. As it is, when I want to know the time at night I hit the dimmer button to check the time, then hit it three more times to cycle the light through medium and high intensities and then to off again.

None of the above items are showstoppers for me, just 'nits that you can either live with or can't. Knowing what I know now, I would purchase the iLuv again. It has most of the features I need and the price is reasonable.

I spent a lot of time deciding whether to buy an iluv, iboom, iblast, ihome...you name it, I've condisered it. I went with the iluv because it had the most pro's over con's. Yes, the remote does not work very far away, but the display is great. It has 3 adjustable dimmers, plus a completly dark mode. Two seperate alarm settings, in case you have 2 people that need to wake at different times. The only thing I would change is that the display (time, date, radio station) is only viewable while the unit is plugged in. Even if you have the 2 double A batteries in the system, it will only stay lit while its plugged in. The instructions say the batteries are for storm back up. Also, the volume has to be at a minumun of 10 on the alarm. Its not to to loud, but I like to wake up to it a little bit quiter. No biggie. If you loose the remote (which is VERY tiny, probably the length of a middle finger and the thickness of a toothbrush) the function buttons are located on the unit, which is always a good thing. Other than these few and minor imperfections, it is a wonderful unit for the money and I would definatly recommend it.

I've been looking at the IH5 from Ihome for months. After reading reviews, I put off buying it hoping ihome or another company would improve on it. I looks like the makers of iluv looked at the reviews and took them to heart in designing the I177. Where the IH5's display could light up a room, the I177 has an adjustable display, including a completely dark setting. Where some complained that the IH5's wake volume was too loud, you can set the wake volume on the I177. Where the IH5's remote was optional, the I177's remote was included standard. The sound is very good for a clock radio. All in all, I'm very satisfied with this purchase and spent $25 less than what I would've spent on the IH5. Glad I waited.

The only negative I noticed was that the ipod insert didn't fit my 5G ipod. In the manual, it mentions that this is subject to availability, which I've heard can take a while. Fortunately, the insert that came with my ipod fit perfectly. Problem solved. So for those waiting, you can order it from apple if iluv is backed up.

In theory this is a cool device with a neat feature set and sound, however there is a terrible oversight in the alarm-it is way too loud and cannot be adjusted to be lower!

If you like waking up to soft music or talk radio, this device is absolutely not for you. The softest volume setting allowed is way too loud.

I was also not at all impressed with the AM/FM reception.

On the plus side, when connected to my iPod, the unit seems to work and sound pretty well and the remote control is handy. But I can't use this for the intended purpose, as a clock radio to wake me up in the mornings.

I ordered the iLuv after a long debate with myself. After reading all of the reviews left for it, it seemed that many people had the same complaints: dimmer too bright, a noticable humming, and the iPod video didn't fit. Well, they were ALL WRONG!! This radio sounds great. It is very clear and sounds the same as it does on the headphones. Sure, there's not a lot of bass, but I have never heard a radio that size that did. For it's size, it is definitely the best sounding radio I have owned. The dimmer might be a problem, if you have it right in front of your eyes! My room is in a basement, where it is very dark and the dimmer has not yet been a problem. There are 3 levels an an off option. In my opinion, there is no way this could be a bother. As for the fit of the iPods, the radio comes with interchangable docks for EVERY iPod. For the video, there is a card with tabs to make the 20 GB dock work with the video. And as an added bonus, there is an AUX space and video out to the TV!! If I were you, I would definitely get this radio!!

iHOME iD38LVC App-Enhanced Stereo System with Dual Alarm FM Clock Radio for iPhone/iPad/iPod - Retai

iHOME iD38LVC App-Enhanced Stereo System with Dual Alarm FM Clock Radio for iPhone/iPad/iPod - Retail Packaging - BlueI love this alarm clock! It's easy to use and sounds great. I listen to music to fall asleep and like to wake up to the radio in the morning and the sound on this little guy is fantastic! The gradual alarm feature is great!! It doesn't come on full blast and scare you to death first thing in the morning. Also, you can set the alarm to only go off 5 days of the week so you don't have to worry about shutting it off before you go to bed on Friday night or try to remember to set it Sunday night. This alarm clock is small and doesn't take up much room on my nightstand at all. It has several settings depending on how bright you want the display you could guide ships with the brightest level. You can also turn off the display completely if you like it really dark in your room. The dock head pivots so even with my Otterbox Defender case I can dock my iphone 4s.

I did not purchase this product from amazon, it was given to me as a gift. I thought I would write a review for people thinking of purchasing it because there don't seem to be any reviews out there yet.

I was really excited about this iHome, because it is a nice, compact size, which wasn't much bigger than my other alarm clock. The sound is fantastic in my opinion, and I like the fact that I can charge my iPhone as well as play music. It also has the capability to play the alarms on the iHome+Sleep app on your iPhone. This feature is nice, but I was mostly looking for an alarm clock that would charge my iPhone and also play music. I am the type who just wants a buzzer alarm to wake me up. This alarm clock offers the options to play radio, music on iPod/iPhone/iPad, playlist, or a defaulted buzzer alarm if there is no device detected.

They claim that it is a "buzzer" alarm, but they could not be more wrong. It is a very weak, quiet beeping sound that starts off slow and gets faster and a tiny bit louder over a few seconds. I have been keeping back-up alarms in case this one does not wake me up, which in many cases, it has not. If you are one to need a loud alarm noise to wake you up, I do not recommend this product.

Something else that bothered me was the display. Not the layout, or the way it is set up, that is all very simple and easy to read and use. What I didn't like was the light-up screen display. It is not like a regular alarm clock where just the numbers are illuminated. The whole back of the screen is lit, and is extremely bright even on the lowest setting. This bothers me because I want to be able to see what time it is at night, but not so much light that it makes it hard to sleep.

Lastly, the otter-box case I have on my phone made it difficult to place on the dock. It takes a little while to maneuver it onto the device, but once it is on, it's nice and snug. I tried putting my iPhone on without the case, and it was much easier, but the phone wobbled back and forth and seemed to be too loose. I recommend just being gentle with the dock as it may be delicate. I did like rubbery/grippy wall that is behind the dock on the iHome in order to support the device.

I personally did not want this item to use as an alarm with my iPhone. I just wanted a buzzer alarm with the capability to charge and play music through my iPhone. This would do the trick, if you are happy with charging your phone or iPad all night and using the iHome alarm app. I was not entirely impressed with this product, I just need to find something that will fit my needs more. I would say in general it is a very nice item if you aren't too picky.

Pros

------------

Not too large or too small, fits nicely on a nightstand

Layout of buttons are simple and easy to use/figure out

Great sound through the two speaker on the front

Able to play music from iPhone or (iPad)

Charges iPhone or other device (iPad)

FM Radio

Dock features a grippy/rubbery supportive wall for docked device

Price isn't too bad for what you get

Cons

------------

Buzzer alarm is weak and too quiet for me personally (and I suspect others as well)

Difficulty placing device on dock with Otter-Box type phone cases

Seemed too loose on dock without a case as well

Display is too bright even on lowest dimmer setting

Alarm on iHome app was not very well projected through the speakers (surprised at this, there is even a setting to raise volume but did not help much)

Although there may be more good things listed than bad, the bad out-weigh the good for me. I was looking for more specific things and this product did not meet my expectations. This product has a lot of bells and whistles that seem to overpower the practical use of the alarm clock. However, Good product if you are not too picky.

Didn't get this from Amazon as I got it as a gift, but decided to write a review. I had heard complaints about the display, but I didn't notice any issues with lighting being distracted when the room is dark; as you can dim the background light. Only problem I had was it was kind of hard to read the time during the day when it was bright as I had it dimmed well. The only other problem I had was there is not a buzzer sound when the phone or an ipod is docked in. When the alarm sounds it will play either the radio or iPhone/iPod music on the device. This is ok if you got a decent song setup to get out of the bed. Other than those two issues, I found the alarm to be very good. I love the the gradual volume increase for the alarm, as it gently wakes you up vs. a jarring noise right away. I also like the sleep feature to play music; I use this sometimes when I need some music to lull me to sleep. The best part is how you can just customize the use of the clock via the iHome app.

I like the sound that comes from the clock radio and it is nice to be able to recharge my phone direction from the unit. I have a number of iHome products which work great with my older iPhone but which can only work with the new iPhone 5 if you have a converter. The sound from the radio is good and while the alarm isn't very loud, it is loud enough to wake both my husband and me.

The only thing I think could be improved is that the unit should come with the remote rather than with an add which suggests you buy it for another $19.99. At the price of this unit, it should have been included.

I do recommend it but note that it does not come with the remote.

This was my fifth iHome alarm (the first one being the iHome iD84BZ Alarm Clock Radio for iPad/iPhone/iPod with AM/FM Presets and the second being the iHome iA17WZC Color Changing Stereo FM Alarm Clock Radio for iPhone/iPod, third iHome iD37GZC 30-Pin iPod/iPhone/iPad Alarm Clock Speaker Dock, and fourth iHome iP92BZ Dual-Alarm Clock Radio for iPod (Black)). This was the second smallest of the five, a nice compact size. The clock is a nice oval shape with all of the buttons on the top. It has all of the standard iHome options: iPhone dock, power button, snooze/dimmer button, sleep button, music controls, radio presets, time sync (you can also do this through the iHome app), and an EQ button. The back of the alarm only has the Aux-In Jack (you can use this for other MP3 players besides the iOS stuff) and the FM antenna. There is no DST switch.

The iHome can function without a device plugged in, but with an iOS device plugged in, you have access to the iHome app. The iHome app allows you to add additional alarms (the clock has one, turned off by default), check the weather forecast, check sleep stats, + some more stuff. The alarms are fully customizable, allowing you to set a flexible repeating schedule, listen to music as you fall asleep or wake up, set the volume for the alarms, choose a nap or alarm type of alarm, set reminders, and post your sleeping habits to social media sites (I don't know why you'd use that, but it's there if you want it). The app is free so you could download it right now and give it a shot before committing to the device. I really liked it at first, but an update broke it and I haven't gone back to using it since then.

I really liked the design for this device, it is a great size, the buttons seem well laid out, it is easy to dock my iPhone (I can leave the case on!), the sound is as good as my other two iHomes, and it is easy to operate. However, I have three complaints:

1) No remote. Every other iHome device I've gotten has had a remote. This one comes with a advertisement to buy a remote for $19.99. Considering the price of the device, it should come with a remote.

2) The display is too bright. I might be a little more sensitive to light than most people, so it might not be that big a deal. But the background of the clock face is a light color and the numbers are dark, which is the inverse of my other clocks. Even on the dimmest setting the light bothers me.

3) The back of the dock makes it harder to dock iPhones with cases on.

When I pulled this device out of the box, I felt like our relationship would be a long and joyous one. But the flaws just were too much for me. However, I won't let my peculiarities stand in the way of my recommending this clock. If you aren't bothered by a bright display and don't mind not having a remote, then this clock is a great one to get.

Homedics SS-4510B Soundspa Autoset Clock Radio

Homedics SS-4510B Soundspa Autoset Clock Radio
  • Projects the time in soothing blue light
  • 6 peaceful nature sounds: ocean, waterfall, summer night, rainforest, thunder & rain
  • Wake to nature sounds, am/fm radio or beep tone
  • Automatic time set and daylight savings time adjustment
  • Am/fm clock radio with led display
  • 6 Nature Sounds
  • Am/Fm Radio Feature
  • Dual Alarms Feature
  • Time Projection

I have three things to say about this clock:

1. If you, like me, hate a loud beeping alarm, this one lets you pick 6 "nature" sounds to choose from, and you can set the volume on those -or on the beep. This is, to me, a fabulous feature, and the reason I bought the clock in the first place.

2. It's a clock. It's a radio. It's a white noise machine. It's R2D2. (Ok, no, but the projector piece makes me think the video of Leia is going to show up on my ceiling.)

3. It's *ridiculously* bright. There are two settings on this clock, Really Bright and OH-MY-GOD-AM-I-IN-TIMES-SQUARE? bright. It cast a shadow of me on the wall while I slept. If you keep the clock across the room from you, maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but mine is on my bedside table and it was like sleeping with a flashlight in my eyes.

I'm not kidding, I could read by it in bed.

The clock projection is mounted on the wrong side of the clock. This would have been an ideal clock except that the project can be tilted only at a 90 degree angle, allowing the projection on the wall behind the clock. If you need to see the time on the ceiling, you have to turn the clock around backwards to have the time project overhead. I returned this clock to Amazon for a Sony Projector Nature Sounds Dream Machine which has a 180-degree range of motion in the projector.

My only excuse is that I purchased this Homedics projection clock/radio using a Christmas gift certificate from a brick and mortar store. But I should have at least looked at the Amazon reviews.

I set up the clock radio, it flawlessly acquired the correct time via the atomic clock, and I set the alarm. I set the light setting on the display for the lowest of the two settings, and oriented the projection on the ceiling. As soon as my light was out, it was evident that the bluish lighted display was producing way to much annoying light, and the projection was not helping in that regard. We've had an Emerson projection clock in our household for a couple of years with a red lighted display and projection which produces no such problem.

Finally, by the early hours of the morning, I'd had enough. The comment someone made about Homedics clocks producing enough light to make shadow puppets was apt. The only good thing I can say about it was that it made enough light so that I had little trouble in what would have otherwise been the dark to find the cord and plug and pull it out of the outlet, so that I could finally turn off that blasted over-bright display and properly relax for a bit of sleep.

It is going back to the store at the next opportunity. And I won't make assumptions that nobody could mess up the manufacture of something as simple as a clock display. I'll read the reviews next time and steer clear of Homedics clocks.

I did not read all reviews, so this may have already been mentioned. It was said the time reflects on the ceiling backwards. If you turn the clock away from you, the time projects correctly, and the light is not in your face. Can't deal with being awakened by startling noises of an alarm clock(who's idea was that). Have to have a sound machine.Thanx.

This is a very poor quality product. The alarm could only be set once. When I tried to change the alarm set time it would not change. I then tried clearing everything by removing the battery. Not only would the alarm still not reset, but now the time and date could not be set. Typical chinese made garbage. This product is so bad that Michigan based HoMedics must know that it doesn't work and just doesn't care. Wish I still had my receipt--now all I can do is throw it in the trash.

Haier "The Rise" Docking Station for iPod/iPhone

Haier 'The Rise' Docking Station for iPod/iPhone
  • Docking station charges iPod/iPhone
  • Integrated speaker
  • Includes Haier Rise App
  • Dual alarm clock, Touch screen FM control, Weather forecast, Internet radio

I recieved this as a gift for Christmas. Aside from depending on the docked phone to tell time, this is a simple and effective little dock. Ready to go out of the box, and it will even take you to the download the app in the Apple app store the first time you dock it. Sound is great too, no problems with that.

Now for the bad.

-The connector seems very flimsy, and no little dock adjusters were included to hold the phone in place without depending on the connector to support the phone. I'm always afraid the connector will snap off of the dock, or the port on my phone will be damaged. All of the iHome radios I have seen have included these adjusters in the box.

-Is it too much to ask for Haier to design an alarm clock app with an option to play an actual alarm (instead of music) when the alarm goes off?

-If you intend to use the app as an alarm clock, remember to not close out the app before going to sleep. If you close the app, the alarm will not go off when you want it to (unlike the clock app embedded in iOS). If Haier really wanted to make me happy, then fixing this one bug in the app would do it.

Overall I think you're better off buying the $55 iHome iP11 Spacesaver Alarm Clock for iPod and iPhone (Black) if you want a dedicated alarm clock/iPhone dock for the bedroom (but you give up sound quality). However this little unit looks nice on a desk so it should be alright if you only want to dock/charge your phone and listen to your music.

Buy Haier "The Rise" Docking Station for iPod/iPhone Now

Bought this on sale. This product was a great idea that is poorly implemented.

Pros:

* Small and compact

* Sounds OK for its size

* App works reasonably well

Cons:

* There is no Play/Pause button. If you have music playing and the app is running you have to leave the app to pause the music.

* Snooze / Dim button dims the display but does not set snooze when the alarm has gone off. Instead you have to press snooze on the iPhone.

* Radio starts playing randomly. The only way to get it to stop is to go to the app and stop it.

* Connector to the iPhone is flaky. If not plugged in exactly right you may not charge the phone or no sound will come out of the speaker.

Bottom line. I wanted to love the unit for its simple integration with the iPhone. However, it has too many technical problems. Have returned it to the store.

I bought this as a birthday present and tested it using a an iPhone 4S. The free Rise App is amazing on its own, and when docked allows you to use the built in radio which is really sensitive, and Shoutcast internet radio. I loved the app because it also shows the weather which is something my girlfriend really wants to know every morning. It will wake you to ipod songs, but I am not sure it will wake you to radio as I have not been able to figure that out yet. There is no buzzer either.

The Bad:

Even though it claims 3G compatibility, when you plug one in a message pops up that says "This iphone is not compatible with this accessory and may cause interference... blah blah." And the radio and button features simply don't work. I am going to upgrade the 3G to os5 tonight and see if that fixes the problem.

Bottom line, it has a lot of great features for the price and you can always just download the Rise app and enjoy it for free as a standalone without the radio function.

Revo Domino D2 Black iPod Dock with Wi-Fi Internet Radio

Revo Domino D2 Black iPod Dock with Wi-Fi Internet Radio
  • High sensitivity DAB and DAB+ digital radio
  • Compatible with current and future DAB standards
  • Advanced Wi-Fi internet radio

Modern design, intuitive menu selections, and good sound make the Revo Domino D2 a good buy for this wifi internet radio. I'd probably get more use of the product if I would read the instruction manual, but with some persistence and curiosity, I've managed to make use of the international internet radio broadcasting that streams in the morning while I get ready for work. What I like most about the system is its monochromatic aesthetic. Its matte finish is stunning and the white LED tuner is really clear and visible from across the room. The sound is not amazing, but that also has to do with the internet broadcast. Connect your iPhone and expect reliable, consistent sound. I think if you're looking for a multi-purpose unit, you'll find great advantages to owning the Revo D2.

Doesn't work with iPhone as promised. iOS (release as of 7/17/2011) considers it an incompatible accessory.

Plays audio from ipod intermittently. Will not play audio from other sources (eg: from streaming apps).

FM tuner selectivity & sensitivity is unusably bad, even with my old-school ham tuning fingers.

Probably the worst radio I've ever owned. I wanted a new radio with that Retro look, and thought this was it. I also wanted a radio that could link up to my i-pod. This radio must have the worst tuner I've ever used. Its extremely sensitive. You barely touch the dial and it jumps off the station. There are times it will not tune at all. When I run it on i-pod mode it will only work 50% of the time, if I'm lucky. I sent it to Crosley for repair or replacement and when I received my replacement three weeks later it would not work at all. I went to plug the power supply into the back of the radio and the mating jack was missing. When you give the radio a little shake you can hear something flopping around inside. I assume its the circuit board where the plug is attached. When I called Crosley back up and explained that the unit they sent me was defective and most likely was damaged in shipping, they said they couldn't find me in their system. Therefore they would not not give me another return authorization.

Stay away from this radio. Its a piece of junk for China. I have 20 year old $15 battery operated radio from General Electric that works much better. I just reenlisted it into service.

We bought this primarily to listen to internet radio as reception is so bad in our remote area. The iDuet only worked with the iPod portion of our iPhone which essentially defeated the purpose for us. The sound quality however was good, so I imagine if you're just docking your iPod and listening to your own music selection this would be fine.

But not for us, we're returning it.

Extremely disappointed. Does not work with the iPhone. The tuning is incredibly poor, unable to keep a station for mare than 5 minutes....I have antiques that do better! Even the clock is ineffecienlty designed and hard to adjust.

I would highly recommend staying away from this and finding something a quarter of the price.

Yamaha TSX-120BL Desktop Audio System (Single, Black)

Yamaha TSX-120BL Desktop Audio System
  • iPod Dock on top panel
  • 30-station preset FM tuner
  • Clock with dual alarm function
  • Alarm modes: music, beep, music + beep
  • Handy card-type remote unit

First, let me say that I am a huge Yamaha fan. I have three Yamaha receivers in use throughout the house and several others that have been replaced scattered through several other houses. It really pains me that I have to give this a split score, a 5 for what it does do and a 3 for what it should do at this price. I guess that's what audio magazines rate as "value".

Yamaha seems to resist adding features to their audio equipment. For example, it took years for their AV receivers to get a decent number of HDMI inputs. Or any at all. That's why I stuck with my RX-V1 for so long; beautiful sound, eight years to get four HDMI inputs on the RX-V1900, a nicely priced AV receiver that sounds as good as that old RX-V1 but has some newer features and for a very reasonable price. This same conservative design approach has really cut into the TSX-120's ability to be a fully useful device, especially when they are charging this premium price.

Like all Yamaha audio products this radio sounds absolutely terrific as either a radio or as a playback device for an iPod. And that's the good part. Also on the good side is that it has two alarm inputs for you and your SO's convenience. But that is about the outer edge of the good features for this radio. What it does, it does really well. It just does not do enough. One thing I noticed right away is that those alarms can not be turned on by the remote. This is a feature I'm used to with my Bose Wave radio (the one that died of old age), a similarly priced competitor, and I can see no reason Yamaha could not have included this useful feature. Just wait for the first twenty times you climb into bed and then have to get up to manually push the Alarm Set button on the unit and you'll probably agree.

This radio only has an FM radio. Too bad for me since I listen to so much AM radio but I could live with that if the FM came with HDRadio capability. Yamaha buys a ton of these chipsets for their RX and the newer Aventage receivers. That they use HD in their newest model indicates to me that they are in the HDRadio game for the long haul, which I'm happy about as I very much enjoy HDRadio, so why not include it? Adding HDRadio would have been a huge step in making this a little more worth the price.

Oh, and the layout of the remote is difficult to use and a bit arcane.

My final complaint has already been documented in other reviews. I'd like to have seen more of a differentiation in the size of the time numbers and the other info on the front panel. As a matter of fact, I'd like to see the numbers at all. This clock sits on a dresser on my wife's side of the bed and those little numbers just aren't legible to me when I wake up, bleary-eyed, in the middle of the night.

All in all, the TSX-120 is a terrific $150 clock/radio/iPod player. Except that it has an MSRP of $399. You'll have to be a real Yamaha fan to buy one of these, which I am. But not at this price, I wish there was more competition so I could have just returned it but there is not. Too much for too little pretty much wraps it up and I think I'll use it for the title of this piece.

I was having doubts between this awesome device and the bose, but after comparing and hearing both, the difference was remarkable and the Yamaha beat it way too far. The bass is excellent without distorsion and the radio function is very useful. I'm very happy with it and if you buy it you won't regret it.

I bought this to use primarily as a bedside alarm clock that would also play music and charge my iphone. At the same time my wife surprised me with the Yamaha TSX-70, which is really nice too. That gave me a few days to compare them and see which I prefered. They were both great in their own way, if I only I could combine the features of the two it would be the perfect unit. I ended up keeping the TSX-120 for the following reasons:

-Customization. You can set it to wake you to any playlist you choose. It also has 5 different alarm sounds, some are buzzer type sounds, but also a couple melodies which to me are better than a buzzer. I use a soft melody which is almost pleasant to wake up to, if there is such a thing.

-Sound quality is very good. Rich, full sound with several DSP settings that make a difference. Way better than most alarm/docks. In Bose class sound. Actually, at a store I compared it side by side with the bose and actually preferred it but they are both good. Of course you can't compare these to full size systems, but for it's size I'd say it's great.

-Convienent button locations and intuitive controls. Easy for me to find the snooze and alarm buttons in the dark. Two alarms that are easily set, plus when enabled the alarm time is displayed so you know for sure it's set and for what time.

Cons: the display is small and a bit cluttered. It can display artist info, song title, time remaining. If they would have made the time about twice it's size it would be perfect. The TSX-70 was much better in regard to it's time display but had no other info.

It's pretty big for an alarm clock, almost as big as two shoeboxes. I suppose the size and solid build help with sound quality so you take the good with the bad.

In summary, despite the great sound and great alarm clock functions it does lack as an alarm clock because of the small size of the display and large size of the unit. I only gave it 4 stars because I use it as an alarm clock, but as a desktop stereo it would be a 5. I suspect someday the next version of the iphone won't fit this dock anymore at which time this will no longer be useful to me as an every night charging station for my phone, but it will still make an excellent little stereo system.

Want Yamaha TSX-120BL Desktop Audio System (Single, Black) Discount?

I have been searching for the perfect combo of alarm clock and great sound for my bedside that would also have an iTouch dock.

I had tried and returned the Boston Acoustics Duo-i Plus which also had great sound (and a slightly better FM tuner) but suffered from the low frequency hum at low volumes when the iTouch was mounted and turned on that so many other reviewers have noted.

So I really thought that this Yamaha was going to be my ticket! Yamaha makes great stuff in every category that they are involved in. But it seems they really dropped the ball when it came to the alarm features on this unit.

Here are the cons that forced me to return it and keep looking:

1) The size of the clock display is really small. I was surprised.

2) The dual alarms do not have assignable days. Which to me, made the convenience of dual alarms almost pointless.

3) The snooze time is NOT adjustable! And is fixed at 5 MINUTES! Seriously? Why would you hit the snooze button if you're going to get only 5 Minutes more ... you might as well get up! :)

4) The FM tuner was not as strong as I was hoping.

The look and quality of the unit is top notch and sound is as awesome as Yamaha is known for.

If you're not going to use this for your main bedside alarm and FM stations are strong in your area then I can heartily recommend this unit.

This system sounds good with an MP3 player docked. The FM radio has trouble getting a clean signal with several of my local stations. The controls are all clearly labeled and you can set the Alarm and all the basic things without consulting the manual every time. The alarm can be set to wake to a specified radio station of a specified playlist. There are two 24 hr alarms but you cannot specify days of the week for the alarm. The display is crowded but it does dim properly so as not to light up the room like many of these digital clock radios do. For me the worst flaw is that the alarm turns itself off every morning after it goes off so you have to remember to turn it back on every night. The alarm cannot be turned on or off or set from the remote control you must use the top panel buttons.

Duracell Ultra Power AAA Batteries, 8-Count Packs (Pack of 4)

Duracell Ultra Power AAA Batteries, 8-Count PacksI have alway had good luck with Duracell. These were at a good price. But, batteries are batteries what else can I say?

These worked fine, BUT... one brand of small batteries is considerably better than the others, as tested by Consumers Union, and I can never remember which it is. On issues like this, where a simple matter of fact is known, it sure would be helpful for AMZ to (i) show that fact in a box; (ii) preferably only carry the better one, and show in a box why it's better. This is a tough decision for AMZ to make, I realize, but it would put it ahead of all the competition, and AMZ has shown it's willing to do that in other cases..

  • Astronomical clock to program lights on a schedule to turn on and off automatically
  • Creates up to 64 timed events
  • AC adapter and rechargeable batteries included
  • Creates up to 255 scenes and 128 areas

This is a solidly built controller for Leviton's Vizia components. There is a short, small-format, detailed User Guide, but it skips many of the basics. Leviton has an extensive web-based tutorial on its website. Viewing this is a must for anyone considering or deploying a Vizia system. Note: this is not the generic video about how great Vizia is. It's the detailed information on planning and implementing it. Look for the "ez-Learn" tutorials about Vizia.

While this controller has a lot going for it, its most used button (OK) is by far the most difficult to use. (I have average size fingers.) This is the reason I dinged it one star. It is too small and it is sandwiched between FOUR other buttons. It is very easy to push one of these other buttons (direction control) instead of Select. I don't see how this got past any sort of usability testing.

Programming this controller is a lot easier once you've seen the ez-Learn Vizia tutorial. Keep in mind that Vizia is mostly about lighting, but the Z-Wave system from other manufacturers goes far beyond that.

The reception isn't very good. I had been using a "cheap" $15 model I'd bought at Best Buy. The reason I wanted to replace it was because the reception wasn't good...lots of static no matter where I put it in the bathroom, even by an open window. Well I went up quite a bit in price and picked a really good brand but am having same problems. Not very good reception, lots of static. But it will have to do for now. Eventually I'll find one that works well!

  • Pioneer Micro CD/iPod/iPhone Dock Shelf System w/ FM Tuner & USB

I love this little stereo. My ipod is old but it has all my favorite music on it and I still have some CD's that I've not digitized and I still like FM radio. So this is the perfect small stereo for me. The remote is perfect for changing inputs and is used to program preset FM stations. The screen is very easy to see on the unit. I've not tried USB input and that's OK. I also like that the AUX input is on the front! It is also nice how the speaker plug in's are modular and fool proof so there is no messing with + and like with bare wired speakers. I was also surprised that it has an equalizer (pre-programmed listening modes) and I was even more surprised to find it has a sleep timer. All in all a perfect little package. I may need more than one!

**See below for iPod/iPhone info. I don't have either myself but this may be important to YOU.**

Common sense tells you this isn't for a true "audiophile" when it comes to sound. But it does deserve 5 stars for an inexpensive, high quality brand that sounds great for those who listen to music occasionally. I live in a condo so I can't have window-jarring bass; this system is good enough. It's impressive considering it has only 10W per channel. Dio1978 (another reviewer) said to crank the speakers up to Level 24-29 for 2 to 5 hours to break them in; I tried that, but the sound was so loud that it bothered my cats however it wasn't distorted. Level 15 is about as high as I go on the volume, since I don't want to tick off my neighbors.

I was looking for a system that played homemade CD's from downloaded MP3 files I was leaning towards a Panasonic until I found that most Panasonics are not compatible with MP3 files. I also wanted a USB-in port so I could play music from a flash drive. If you like bass, there's a P-Bass selection, but it's not so bass-y that it rattles your neighbor's house. You also have a selection of Pop, Jazz, Rock, Classic on a built-in equalizer.

The tuner section is made of plastic; the speakers appear to be pressed wood with cloth on the front. The speaker wires measure approximately 3 feet long, so unless you want to take a chance and splice them, you are limited in speaker placement. The remote control uses one of those flat batteries that looks like a coin, the kind you normally find in a garage door opener (the battery IS included). The remote has a fairly decent range, I managed to get 20 feet away before it quit receiving the signal.

The warranty on this is one year.

**iPhone iPod compatibility**

I found this on Pioneer's non-USA web site. It appears Pioneer also needs to update their USA web site.

Compatible models are iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch (all generations), iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th generation), iPad and iPad 2

Music has always been a huge part of my life and after moving from a large house to a small apartment about a year ago, I no longer had room for my two full sized stereo rack systems. With most of my collection in CD form (I dislike Ipods although have a first generation model that I rarely use) I found I could not stand the silence any longer and purchased the X-EM21 Micro CD/FM Stereo mostly for the CD player. I could not be happier. It was so easy to set up as the speaker plugs are modular and my small apartment is filled with the sounds of my favorite music. For such a compact system at a reasonable price, the quality of the music is very good. I listen primarily to classical and meditative music and from the lows to highs the entire range is clearly discernable. Since my Ipod is so old and nearly dead, the bonus was the discovery that the unit can play music from a USB flash drive so even without my Ipod, I have access to my entire Itunes collection. The unit appears well made and not junk like other small stereo systems and I could not be happier and unlike another reviewer who had trouble with the remote, mine works fine. The auxillary, earphone and USB ports are right at the front of the unit so they are easily accessible. Thank you Pioneer for creating a great product that does not cost an arm and a leg and can meet the needs of folks living in very small living spaces! I am looking forward to many hours of happy listening.

The player itself is absolutely perfect, small size, great sound, easy controls. The issue I'm having is the remote. It worked for about 5 minutes then stopped working. I tried the remote from 3 inches away up to 10 feet away and from different angles and still nothing. I then thought it was the battery so I replaced it and once again it worked perfect for about 5 minutes. I used a battery tester on 3 volts and tested both batteries and they both said 95%+ charged. If anyone has any ideas please mentioned it. If the remote doesn't work it's going to be a deal breaker.

I bought this little stereo because it met all my criteria: a bookshelf radio / CD system that actually looked good and didn't cost much (I'm way behind the times and don't have an Ipod, but it's nice that it has a dock if I ever do get one). For the most part I've been very happy with it--the sound is nice and fills my small apartment, and it's easy to use and has a simple, convenient remote.

My one complaint is that the CD mechanism must be a little cheap, because once in a while a CD will skip that did not skip on my previous player. However, this is just infrequent enough (maybe one skip for every 2-3 hours of playing time?) that it's not worth it for me to return it and hunt for another player.
