I decided to write this review because the only other one available really didn't do this product justice.

As of July 3rd 2010 the only customer review on this product is that of Andres Roura titled "idiotic designer." Here he complains that the lettering on the buttons that identify each feature "CD, Tape, Power, etc" are hard to read because they are the same copper color as the background they are raised on.

First of all, its not that big of a deal. Unless your eye sight is greatly diminished, you should really have no problem reading each button. Besides, after the first 3 or 4 uses, you should have each button/option memorized.

Second, to write such a negative review just because of this aspect is really unfair to the product and misleading to the people who are considering buying it. I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinions and that maybe this "shortcoming" is enough to make some people dislike the product but I just don't like it being the sole interpretation of the it on Amazon because some people use those reviews to make their minds up on certain purchases.

Personally, I very much enjoyed my turntable. I bought it about a month ago and was really worried it wouldn't be good enough or I wouldn't like it.

When I got it (quite fast shipping actually), I was pleasantly surprised. It is a very good size product. Quite sturdy, doesn't feel cheap.

I tried the radio first. The sound was awesome. That was what I was worried about the most but I was not disappointed at all. It provides a very rich a full sound.

The adapter for ipod's or other mp3's on the back was equally great. Same great sound quality. Probably my favorite feature of the whole jukebox.

The CD player is good too and even plays mp3 CD's.

The record player has a slightly softer sound but I'm guessing that is normal. (I'm not really an audiophile and don't have much experience with record players.) That said, there is something so cool about playing vintage records and seeing them spin under the needle, just awesome!

(To be fair)...

The lettering is a little faint and requires a little bending down or squinting to make out the options (at least the first couple of times.) Like I said before, though, this is not that big of a deal and doesn't detract enough from the product to really be a factor (in my opinion).

Besides the overall rating, Amazon asks for ratings on two specific aspects: Portability and Sound Quality.

Portability: Well this isn't really what this is designed or intended for so its not something you take out to every party or carry around everywhere. I assume most people will find a place for it and leave it there most of the time (bedroom, living room, etc.) That said, it is pretty lightweight so its very easy to move around if you want to. I gave it a two for portability not because you can't take it places, but because I don't think you'll really want to.

Sound Quality: Great. Its no state of the art, home theater system, but its very satisfying. It goes quite loud, louder than I expected and the sound is very rich and full. Sound is especially good with CD's, ipods, and FM/AM radio. Slightly less quality sound for records but I discussed that already (plus you can just turn the sound up a little extra). As for cassettes, I don't have any anymore (or don't know where) so I haven't tried that yet.

Overall quite happy with the purchase. I highly recommend it if you want a system that has a nice aesthetic value and is a little out of the ordinary by today's standards. (Who plays records anymore? its totally cool)

The sound is really good but if that's all you're concerned with and don't care much about the unconventional musical features, you might try something else.

If you actually read the reviews on this item, rather than just counting the number of stars, there is a lot more revealed about 1) the rationality of people's expectations, 2) the variance in people's perceptions and 3) how people rate an item based on what aspect of the item's performance is important to them.

Taking #1 first: This is a $125 item that plays records at 3 separate speeds; plays cassettes; plays CDs and has a radio. 99% of turntables ALONE cost more than $100 AND 90% of them require additional equipment to perform (an amplifier and speakers, minimum) which would cost a minimum of another couple of hundred dollars. People buy it and complain "Oh! The parts are plastic!" "Oh, the sound is tinny!" Well, many parts for $250 and $300 turntables are plastic AND while the sound quality is not at the audiophile level, it is not tinny at all. If you want perfection, go spend $20,000 on an entertainment system. Stop being ridiculous when you are referring to a $100 purchase.

#2: Of the reviewers who directly mention such things, half of them say the sound quality is mediocre to poor and half say it is very good to excellent. Which is it? The same product cannot be both poor AND excellent. Half the reviewers say it is cheaply made and half say it is sturdy and well-made. Which is it? All this speaks to are people's individual perceptions. Is the item a piece of useless crap? Is it a hand-crafted masterpiece? Neither. It is a decently made and functional item that is a bargain at $125, but would be over-priced at say, $300 or $400.

#3: A majority of the people who rate the item at 2 or 3 stars say that one or more functions are "very good", "pleasing" and "work perfectly", but one or more functions are "disappointing", "don't operate well" or are "poor sounding". My questions are: Do you expect (for $125) that every function of a multi-function music center will be of top quality? Maybe if you paid $1000 for everything, but be realistic. Also, what did you specifically buy the unit FOR? If you bought it for the turntable and the turntable functions well, is it tragic if the cassette player does not operate like a Tandberg? If you bought it for the CD player and it plays well, does it matter if there is a bit of a wobble in the turntable?

If you bought the unit for the radio, you are probably nuts, but if the radio works but the CD player doesn't, is it the end of the world?

Obviously, if the function or functions you bought the unit for do not work to your satisfaction, bring it back and get your money----but how many people actually are going to use this unit regularly to play cassettes, CDs AND records? I'd guess less than 1%. So, what it comes down to again is being realistic instead of angry and put-upon because you did not get $20,000 worth of audiophile equipment for $125.

The 5-star raters probably have low expectations, but they are much more realistic in their ratings if the unit functions in a half-way decent manner. The 1 and 2 star-raters are clearly types that expect something for nothing. Good luck with that.

Finally, me?

I bought the unit simply to play 78 rpm 10 inch records from the 1930s through 1950s. The turntable works great, the fidelity is certainly acceptable. The cassette player works (for the 10 cassettes I still have, and which I will hardly ever play) and again, the fidelity is acceptable. The CD player works fine, though for CDs, I would expect the sound quality to be better (except, OH! I only paid $100 for this unit and I would NEVER EXPECT excellent sound quality from it, so I play CDs on my better system). The radio is a radio. It sounds like a regular radio (as long as you have radio reception, which I doubt that the people who complain about the static have), so it is fine.

The unit is great looking, it works well beyond a $125 price tag. It is certainly one of the best units you can buy under $200 or $300.

I purchased this record player for the living room of my house. I read all of the Amazon.com reviews about four times of the span of a week. It was exciting to finally get my hands on this record player. A little back ground on me, I am a 32 year old male who is very into music. My eye sight is 20/20 and I'm pretty good at figuring things out. After actually "seeing" for myself...the display is "very" hard to read. It is easier to see in the daylight. I had difficulty the first night when my living room was only lit by a couple lamps. I found myself looking at it from a couple inches away at different directions in an attempt to make out what it said. The speakers are very weak. Don't expect a great deep sound to come from this unit. The sound is rather tingy without much bass. I will be attempting to attach some external speakers to beef up the sound. The record player seems pretty frail. I listened to an Aerosmith and a U2 album the first night. My particular record player spins with a slight wobble that you can hear in the music. At this point I am not bothered by it because it is such a nice treat to be able to listen to some of my old albums. I'm certain that after some time this will really start to annoy me. The radio works great. I mostly listen to talk radio and this unit sounds perfect for that format. I really can't write much about the cassette or CD player since I never use those features. I would recommend this record player to anyone that is looking for something that can do it all. In hindsight, I should have purchased a unit that put more into the record player. For this price, the amount spent on each feature is spread pretty thin. Also would like to reiterate that the record player can play one record. It is not a player that lets you cue up a few records at a time to play. Also, the needle arm is manual which means you put the needle on the record, and when the record is over you must take the needle off of the record and return it to the cradle. Might not seem like a big deal but it is if you're like me and might leave a record playing and then forget about it. The unit will stay on until you turn it off.

I got this as a birthday present and I absolutely love it! It looks fantastic as a conversation piece and the sound quality of the music is lovely. The button labels are a little difficult to read at first, as they are raised bronze on bronze, however after using it just a couple times you remember where the buttons are and you won't need to look for them. It's easy to use and appears to be reasonably well made. I love attaching my ipod to it! I am definitely looking forward to enjoying it for years to come.

I actually purchased this record player at a local pawn shop ($65!) where it certainly looked new or at the very least extremely lightly used. I had been looking for a simple record player with internal speakers to sit atop a beautiful antique record stand that was waiting for us in our new rented apartment, and--despite the reservations I had about this one based on the negative Amazon reviews--I couldn't pass up the deal.

To state at the outset and in contrast to some of the reviewers below, I'm no audiophile: though I'm classically trained as a musician, if I need to hear an extremely high quality orchestral recording I'd rather listen to a CD system or with BOSE headphones. I'm also 24, so I'm not pining for some golden age of LPs and won't be upset if the sound from this machine doesn't perfectly conform to my childhood memories. I'm sure there are really excellent record players out there that would be blow this system's output out of the water (just as there are for CD players and any other type of electronic equipment), but I'm not interested in exceptional fidelity, nor--and this is my bone to pick with some reviewers below--could I reasonably expect it for $65.

Some preliminary observations:

1. Great appearance: it looks pretty old timey to me (though the CD deck obviously gives it away as a non-antique). To the criticism that it's shoddily constructed--I'm just not seeing it. The wood seems sturdy to me, even if it doesn't seem terribly aged or varnished. On top of the antique stand, it looks newer by comparison, but not cheaper.

2. Buttons: true that they're hard to read, but not impossible, and there are few enough of them that you'll figure out what they do quickly. It should be stated that nearly all the buttons have to do with the CD player function, so unless you're playing a lot CDs it's not a big deal.

3. Multiple functions: This is the machine's main selling point, in my opinion. Not only do the record player, CD player, and radio all sound great, they are also fairly easy to switch between. The radio is has both AM and FM, with a wire antenna out the back for reception (though this remains packaged up on my unit and the reception is already very good). The radio dial is similarly old time-y, so it can be a little tricky to find stations with weaker reception (a la the old days). The CD player sounds especially good, seeing as these speakers were likely developed for CD technology and placed in this unit because they fit the console. I haven't tried the tape deck (I don't have any cassettes anymore!), nor do I plan to, but I suppose it's good to have a deck in the house for a chance just in case. The aux input (1/8" to 1/8" included) works great with my iPhone (more below), and means that I can play absolutely anything on this system that I want.

4. Sound: Here's the thing: my records are old and haven't been played for a long time, so it's hard to know what to blame on the record player and what to blame on my LPs. The built-in stylus seems sturdy and straight-forward, and the three speeds are helpful for speeding through longer symphonic movements to get to the clarinet excerpts within. The sound is not BOSE quality, but it's also significantly better than clock radios and fills the large room with warm sound. The sound of the turntable is noticeably stuffier than on the CD or radio, but--to my limited knowledge--that was kind of the point of them inventing CDs in the first place, right? I don't hear much static, but I don't mind a little anyway because that's kind of the point of having an old time-y record player. The sound doesn't distort much when turned way loud, which means it could be heard over the din of a cocktail party, or during dinner conversation in the next room. The lid can close completely during playback with no noticeable change in sound quality, though the record does spin through a slit in the back of the system so you can't have it flush with a wall or other surface (though you wouldn't want to anyway since you couldn't prop open the lid in this instance). I've enjoyed it most when listening to the Beatles or S&G, and my jazz records sound FANTASTIC--definitely the ideal medium for music of that era. Is it the cleanest, most-balanced medium for listening to classical music? No, nor would I expect it to be. And, since I'm alive in 2012, I'm simply going to play those pieces on a CD system, not spend thousands on a record player, pre-amp, external speakers, etc. so I can earn the right to be condescending on an Amazon review. What I do know is that this system is going to spark my interest in jazz and 60s/70s folk, genres that weren't really doing it for me over the iPod, not to mention being a badass conversation piece in my living room.

5. Things I would change: so I suppose these are the things keeping this review from being 5 stars, but I mostly stay away from 5 stars as a rule anyway. On the record player and other than the sound/volume discrepancies with the other functions, I'd like the stylus to automatically return to the cradle when it reaches the end of a record (although and in contradiction to some reviews below, the record DOES stop spinning, just with the arm resting on the innermost ring). It's true that the CD buttons are hard to read, but what's possibly more irksome is that many of them are superfluous and dedicated to some kind of pre-program function that doesn't have much practical purpose it seems to me. Unlike my car system, when switching between functions the CD starts over at the beginning each time, so no flipping to NPR on the hour for news and returning to the same track on the CD player. As stated above, the radio dial has some trouble zeroing in on weaker signals, but this will be a phenomenon familiar to those of a certain age. As for the input aux (which is a HUGE plus and really rounds out the system nicely), there is no aux option on the front of the system, which means you have a to flip a switch in the back. This isn't a problem for me given the location of the system in my house, but if you want to keep it on a bookshelf or something and use the aux it could become a bit of a bother. As I say though, the trade off is worth it since I can stream anything over my iPhone and still benefit from this great-looking and sounding system. There is no quality adjustment on the system either--I would if I could trade out some of the byzantine programming buttons for some bass and treble knobs. No auto-off, if you're into saving every ounce of electricity. Also--and I feel silly for stating this because it should be obvious given the price and stated dimensions (though it evaded some other reviewers)--it only loads one record or CD as a time. All in all, none of these observations meets the criticism threshold--they're just things you should know if you're interested in this system.

Bottom line: if you need a way to play records, fill a room with a radio/CD/aux sound source, and look classy while doing it, this is the record player for you. If you're obsessed with sound quality and looking down your nose at lesser beings, I'm not sure what you're doing buying a record player for slightly over $100 on Amazon.

This speaker is quite nice. I'm no audiophile, I was simply looking for a bluetooth speaker, preferably with a clock, when I came across this at a local store. I gambled and brought it home and so far I'm very happy with it. I've only had it for a couple of days, but I've used it quite a bit in that time. It easily synced up with my Android phone and iPod via bluetooth, and I was streaming Pandora right away--nice!

Pros:

Nicely constructed--I hung mine from the wall and it looks good.

Sounds very good (to my untrained ear) at low and moderate volumes. I haven't had it super loud, but it projects nicely into a large living room/kitchen at moderate levels.

FM and bluetooth have been seamless.

Cons:

The clock only displays 24-hr time. I don't mind because I am in the military and I'm used to it, but it's a very odd engineering choice. This is why I'm deducting one star.

The remote could be better, and it's required for some functions (like setting the clock) so take care of it.

I know there are similar speakers from Creative and others, and I can't give any comparison to those. One last comment I'll make, though, is to consider the size. This speaker is sound-bar sized, whereas some of the Creative speakers are much smaller and may sound just as good.

I purchased this soundbar and after hooking it up to my Samsung TV it was not working correctly. I verified that the settings were correct in the menu setup for an external speaker, but could not hear the voice through the sound bar. Background noises in a program could be heard, but actual conversation was not audible. I purchased a higher quality RCA connector through Radio Shack and the sound bar is now working as expected.

I bought these Jan. 2012. My Voice Alert system will tell me when battery charge is low and the last 5 "new" batteries I've put in has triggered the low battery alert. I will not be buying alkaline batteries from Amazon in the future if they're sending me "new" batteries with no charge left or can't vouch for the freshness of their products.

I bought these batteries from Amazon and received them in a bubble mailer. The twelve pack of batteries had opened in transit and were scattered in the bubble mailer. Additionally, they have a late 2016 expiration date. I am used to expiration dates in the late teens to even the early twenties at this point. I don't know if 9 volts just don't last as long, but I would have been disappointed if my aim were to use these one or two at a time each year. Instead, I bought these for this year's replacement batteries for the whopping six smoke detectors in my house. I will have depleted them by 2013 so the 2016 date won't be that much of a problem for me. I tend to give batteries four stars, but I give this item three stars instead due to the packaging and date issues.

Kanto SYD5GRN Speaker System for iPod (Kelly Green)

Kanto SYD5GRN Speaker System for iPod
  • iPod Universal Dock: Charge your iPod while it's playing and control the SYD 5 from across the room with sleek remote control unit.
  • Video output: If you have music videos on your iPod you can play them onto your big flat panel TV while you listen to the "uncommonly robust sound" on your SYD 5.
  • Hand crafted wood cabinet: The SYD 5 design utilizes a acoustically designed wood cabinet, delivering a unique, rich finish with superior sound.
  • Volume Control: One particular feature that everyone comments about is the additional manual volume control on the back. Sometimes the simplest things just work so why change them.
  • Audio Specifications: Frequency Response: 45Hz-20KHz, S/N Ratio: >90dB (typical, A-weighted), 80 real watts power, Low Drivers: 2x20 watts RMS 8 ohms @1% THD+N, Full-range Drivers: 2x20 watts RMS 8 ohms @1% THD+N, Bass reflex port enhances bass response

My wife likes to listen to music in her studio, but didn't want something too obtrusive. Her studio can get noisy (glass lampwork) so she needed something with some power, but still able to faithfully reproduce sound quality, especially during quiet times. I bought her the Kanto Syd-5 for Christmas and she LOVES it. The cabinet is beautiful and if there's not an iPod docked on top, you don't notice it on the bookshelf it rests on. I read that the cabinet is made with the same finish they use for high-end pianos, and I believe it.

PROS: Super sound quality, plenty of bass, and plenty of power if you want to crank it up. I tried hooking it up to a 32" LCD TV via the S-video, and while it wasn't HD, it was pretty good. You could pair it with a flat screen and maybe a DVD player and have a pretty decent home theater. The remote is OK and lets you adjust treble/mid-range/bass.

CONS: Not many, but this is one heavy unit (25+ lbs). You won't want to move it around too much. We have the black finish, and while it's beautiful, fingerprints and dust are noticable.

As far as pricing, the Syd-5 was in the $4-500 range when it came out, but I got it for $250. I've heard the Bose Sounddock (both models), and the Syd-5 outperforms them easily for a (lot)less money. If you don't need portability and if looks and price/performance are important, then you can't do better than the Kanto Syd-5

UPDATE: After owning and using this unit for over a month, I'm ready to bump my rating from 4 to 5 stars. The sound quality is more than enough to offset the shortcoming in the controls.

This isn't your usual iPod dock with tiny speakers! This baby can really put out the sound. As the product descrition states, "Maclife magazine announces the Kanto SYD 5 as a winner in its 'gear of the year' awards." And, this is the only iPod dock to earn such an award this year.

This unit gathered immediate attention as soon as I pulled it out of the box. My 17-yr old son was extremely interested, as you might imagine, and he even wondered where it would be living at our place, since his older brother took the iPod dock with him when he went away to college. My wife even took notice, and she seldom pays much attention to technology that shows up at our place.

We have had this unit for about a week now, and we are extremely impressed by its sound quality! It has two 3" full-range speakers and a 5.25" woofer. These speakers are housed in an attractive white housing and fabric-covered front panel that is held in place by magnets. The back panel has bass reflex ports. That front panel is easily removed to expose the speakers, and is easily replaced. The unit also has a wide variety of dock adapters for every type of iPod, from first generation Nanos through iTouch and iPhone units, and it charges them too.

The Kanto can fill an entire room with sound. As I mentioned above, it provides better sound than any iPod dock I've ever heard, and it even provides better sound than just about any portable stereo I've heard. Of course, this is not going to be able to go head to head with a full-blown component stereo, but it does, in fact serve as our main sound system. I think this would be a fantastic sound system for an apartment or other housing option where space is at a premium. It has a footprint larger than most iPod docks at 22" x 8". Still it will fit nicely in most shelves.

The rear panel provides multiple options for audio input including the following: a standard 4-pin S-video input, and an auxilliary input and 3.5 mm to RCA audio input for non-iPod MP3 player connection. The back also houses the power on-off toggle switch and volume knob.

I give the unit 5 stars for sound quality and 5 stars for overall design and appearance.

In my opinion the main weakness with this unit is the controls. Here is why I rate the controls at only about 3 stars. The only controls you can access without the remote are the one-off toggle switch and volume knob, which are both on the back of the unit. As such, these aren't especially convenient to manipulate. All other controls are manipulated via the small remote control unit that comes in the box. If you lose the remote or it gets broken, your ability to manipulate some of the controls for this unit will be lost.

The remote allows you to do the following:

change the volume (remote or by hand)

increase or decrease the bass (remote only)

increase or decrease the treble (remote only)

mute the sound (remote only)

change the input selection (remote only, as far as I can tell)

and manipulate an iPod that is seated on the dock (remote or by hand all functions)

iPod manipulation is complete via the remote. You can turn on the iPod's backlight so you can see the screen, rewind or go to the previous selection, fast forward ro go to the next selection, change the shuffle status, manipulate the iPod menus, and it even has an option that does the same thing as the iPod's wheel. But, the remote is the only way that these controls can be accessed (of course you can always use the wheel on the iPod directly).

Surprisingly there is no power on/off button on the remote a large oversight in my opinion. So, when you are done listening and you want to turn the unit off you have to go over to it and reach around to the back and turn it off.

All in all we are extremely pleased with this unit and it's seen lots of service at our place already. I think that it may find its best niche as a primary sound system for a small apartment, but it will be sure to find a place in any home.

Worried about the price tag? Yes, it is up there. At $300+ it is a pricy unit, but I think the price is worth it for the sound.

I listened to many similar products. This and the Bose top the list. Sound quality is excellent for both. The Kanto edges out the Bose based on the additional connection options (such as hooking this up to your TV).

Want Kanto SYD5GRN Speaker System for iPod (Kelly Green) Discount?

The Kanto Syd5 speaker system for the ipod is an amazing sounding speaker system. Measuring 22" x 8" x 8" (approx) and weighing at least 20+ lbs., you will need to devote a chunk of shelf space for this product. I have used it with an ipod nano as well as a 30GB ipod video and an iphone. The ipods mounts on the top of the speaker system. Various plastic adapters come with the system that allow you to adjust the connector port to your specific ipod for a snug, secure fit.

The front of the system comes with a cloth speaker cover that attaches magnetically to prevent dust and debris from getting into the speakers. You can leave the cover off, if desired.

The overall external construction is plastic and leaves a few things to be desired.

Pluses:

-Dynamic range for treble and bass with an automatic reset to neutral using the remote

-Easy to set up (a few simple connections with cables)

-Attaches via an S-video cable to the TV to play videos on our HD TV; looks and sounds great

-Volume range is outstanding

-Built-in sub-woofer really pulverizes the ole' kidney stones

-Remote control feature allows you to access the menu on your ipod directly and scroll through your selections and sound and playback options

-Charges your ipod while it plays

Minuses:

-Heavy, heavy, heavy; big, big, big

-Shiny plastic case scratches very easily, even with the greatest of care.

-Since we use different ipods, we have not installed the various plastic adapters to hold each of the different ipods in place. It is oddly difficult to then connect the ipod onto the top of the speaker without them.

-The remote control is slightly thicker than a credit card and is very cheaply made. It also is very easy to misplace!

-Without the remote, you can do very little. This is probably my biggest complaint about the system. Currently, my husband has misplaced the remote somewhere and now the only thing we can do is adjust the volume through the volume control on the back. Without the remote, you are pretty much stuck with manually going up to the speaker and selecting songs. However, any control over the different output features (bass/treble, etc.) is now gone. All we can do is adjust volume, which is disappointing. I would have preferred more controls on the speakers itself.

Overall, this is one of the best speaker systems I have heard for the ipod. Minus the remote, which is cheaply made, easily misplaced and absolutely essential, the price you pay for the speakers is worth every penny. First of all, I love this thing, but I need to start my review by making sure that you understand just how large this speaker system is: 22 x 8 x 7.2 inches ; 22 pounds. When I first ordered this, I was kind of fooled by the picture, it looks much smaller for some reason... and then a gigantic box arrived at my door. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought that, because I showed my friend the product page and she said, "oh, that little speaker is what you got?" So maybe they need a picture of it on an entertainment center or something, so you can get a sense of the size. Anyway, it's quite large, but I love that about it now.

Although it's primary purpose appears to be for your IPod, and it comes with many different mounts, so that it can fit any kind of ipod under the sun, it became clear to me relatively quickly, that a speaker this fantastic would have to become the crowning glory of my living room. You can have three different things hooked up to the speakers at any given time, so I keep my TV, Ipod, and a jack for my computer always ready. And conveniently, the remote has a handy "input select" so that you can easy switch between those 3 options. About the Ipod... you can use any MP3 player, as long as it has a jack, which as far as I'm aware, they all do. The only caveat would be that you couldn't use the remote to control the mp3 player.

I'm no expert, but the sound on this speaker is awesome! It gets really loud, the bass, everything, just sounds great! My step father is an engineer with Bose, and he's very loyal to them, and a man of few words, but I asked his opinion of the speaker and he did say that it was a very good speaker ; ) So as far as an expert opinion, that's all that I can personally offer you. The only problem that I have with the speakers, is that I think the remote is kind of chintzy. I would think that for a product this expensive, that they could have put a little bit more effort into the remote, or at least somehow made the speakers compatible with a universal remote. It's the exact same kind of remote that comes with $50 (or less) electronics. Maybe even sell a better remote on their website?

Overall though, I highly recommend these speakers. The fact that they're compatible with an Ipod is probably the least impressive thing about them; at least to me. In my house, they're my all around, go to speakers, and I just can't get enough!

iMode Clock Radio with iPod Docking Station

iMode Clock Radio with iPod Docking Station
  • This cute item is full of options.
  • Plug in iPod and playback Music, PLL Digital AM/FM Tuner / Stereo Radio, LCD alarm clock display, Alarm by iPod/ radio/ buzzer
  • Comes with Sleep control, Electric Volume, Remote control for iPod, Recharges iPod

I got this as a christmas present, and was sorely disappointed. Avid music listener as I am, I immediately plugged my iPod in to the iMode. I was disappointed to find that the sound quality lacked depth and fullness. In fact, I have an aged set of speakers from Altec Lansing (which I bought for maybe $10 at a garage sale) and their sound quality is exponentially better than the iMode's. And when I play my music loudly, the iMode makes a rattling noise, because apparently one of the buttons is a bit loose. Oh, and I set the alarm this morning, and I have no idea what happened, but it didn't go off. If you're looking for an alarm clock for your ipod with good sound quality, look elsewhere. My friend has the iPlace (I think), and it sounds much better than mine.

My daughter was given an iMODE docking station for Christmas and it is already broken. The piece that the iPod attaches to just broke off. I am extremely disappointed in this product. DON'T waste your money on this item.

This is a nice looking unit with a number of good features dual alarms, remote control for the radio and the iPod, an external AM antenna. Believe, me, I was excited when I pulled this out of the box. Alas, that excitement was short lived. The FM reception was terrible. Some stations I can easily receive on other radios in the house would not come in. Other stations bled over a wide frequency range. So I docked my iPod. That was fine until I started playing music. Very poor sound quality. It had a tinny sound, lacked any serious bass. Not worth near the money it costs.

I've had the Imode for over 4 years now and never had a problem. I got it from a brick and mortar store before starting my current job. I use it everyday and I have no issues with the sound quality. My office is on the 35th floor and I get all stations except for AM stations. For what I spent on it I didn't expect it to be a stellar sound system, just something to plug my ipod into to charge and to be able to listen to my ipod and radio stations at work. I would recommend this to anyone looking for something basic.

I purchased my Imode alarm clock docling station during the thanksgiving sale.... I am so impressed with the quality of the speakers... I really like the sleep mode for the ipod which turns off the music in 90 minutes or less so that it would turn off by itself after im asleep... I don't care much about the radio feature since I hardly listen to radios so i dont really know the quaality of radio frequencies. The REMOTE is a really good bonus too since I can operate the alarm clock all the way from my bed hehehe.... The only thing I don't like about the product is that you can not change the IPODs album from the remote... so you have to press next and finish all the songs from the current album until you can go to the next album. All in all it's really a good buy! Im really happy with it.... I bought another one as a christmas present for my cousin....

Philips AJ3231 Mirror Finish Clock Radio

Philips AJ3231 Mirror Finish Clock Radio
  • Wake up to your favorite radio station or buzzer
  • Dual alarm times with repeat
  • AM/FM analog tuner
  • MP3 link for portable music playback
  • Battery back-up

Pros:

*Gorgeous contemporary design with mirror and stainless steel look. The LED display magically floats in the mirror.

*Very low level brightness yet perfectly legible and without glare. Many alarm clocks are way too bright even on dim settings. If the brightness of alarm clocks bothers you, this clock should work well for you.

*Easy to figure out without instructions which makes it a viable option for guest bedrooms.

Cons:

*When adjusting the alarms, there is no indication on the LED display which alarm you are adjusting. Compounding this problem is when you turn on an alarm, there is no way to see what time the alarm is set for. It's far too easy to adjust one alarm and turn on the other by mistake. This is a MAJOR negative. The display also doesn't tell you if the alarm is set for buzzer or radio. The lack of information on the display makes it impossible to adjust in the dark.

*No fast reverse. To adjust times, there is a fast forward button and a slow reverse button. I like clocks that also have fast reverse which makes changing alarm times easier and quicker.

*Slide controls are small and difficult to use. The distance between settings is very small so it can be frustrating.

*Buzzer volumes are not adjustable. Alarm 1 is set at a low volume which is very quiet and might not work for sound sleepers. Alarm 2 is slightly louder but it's still quieter than any other alarm clock I've used. With both alarms, you do have the option of waking up with radio which is volume adjustable and gets very loud.

*No gradually increasing alarm volume.

*Radio is not digital. Not a major issue but the dial is small so it's hard to know what station you're on.

*No nap function.

*The audio cable in the back doesn't stay in the holder and flops around annoyingly. I have since cut it off.

*Snooze not adjustable (set at 7 minutes).

Overall, this alarm clock would work well in a guest bedroom where style is of paramount importance. For your main alarm clock, you should consider something with better functionality.

I have been looking for "the perfect" clock radio for quite a while and I think I found it!

A marvel of engineering and design -it's light, airy, amazing looking yet sturdy and substantial at the same time. This is so well designed! I find that the buttons are in the right places, easy to get to and intuitive, they feel very substantial and not flimsy and cheap like so many other electronics today. I don't know how they were able to make a piece that is so substantial and solid feeling yet airy and light and unobtrusive looking. A really great job done though! I am quite impressed and very pleasantly surprised, this feels like a product that will last, which sometimes seems like a thing of teh pasttoay everything is made to toss...

I love the non digital radio station dial-I live in a mountainous area where it's very hard to get any reception, and the manual tuner is a must. And this one is well made and sensitive -I actually get several stations with this, which I have never been able to get with others I have tried.

On top of it the light display is brilliantly done! The mirror finish is really cool it's a smoky color so not like a shiny standard mirror. And the time is displayed in a golden color that makes it really easy at a quick glance see what time it is whether it's light or dark in the room, yet at night it's very unobtrusive. Living in the mountains we have no ambient light (except the moon when it's full) coming into the bedroom. So, any light source really pops out and I have a hard time sleeping with that in the room. So I have been looking for one that didn't keep me awake. I have tried several ones with adjustable displays but ended up having to toss a piece of clothing over each one I have tried, which makes it a useless time keeper. This one was just perfect.

I really, really like this clock radio and can highly recommend it.

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM) The last thing I want to do when I wake up is look in the mirror. However, even thought this Philips Alarm Clock's face is mostly one large mirror, it still looks sleek. The time is shown through the mirrored surface in bright yellow with adjustable brightness. It looks great, stands vertically about six inches and has all the basic features of a typical alarm clock. However, don't get too excited.

My previous alarm clock was easy to just reach over and slam the snooze button until I was ready to wake up. The snooze here is not so easy to find being a small tab on the top. There are two alarms (typical) that you can set to the radio, a buzz (one second beep tones) or off. They are difficult to set as the front display does not show you which setting is which. The font is very hard to read, being a tiny gray typeset on a black background. The other side contains the volume wheel, a radio tuner for AM/FM and a small dial to find radio stations (Look at the photo I included for size comparison). There is also an AUX setting as you can hook up your iPod/MP3 in the back. The cord for the iPod/MP3 is supposed to fit snugly around the back, but the slot it was designed for is too short, so the cord hangs loose. The top has the small linear tabs for `On/Off', `alarm reset' and `sleep'. The largest tab is the `Repeat Alarm/Sleep Off' on top. Its very compact, but not the easiest to set up. Do note that you need bright light to work any of the setup functions; not a dark room.

Aside from the small settings and type, this Philips Clock does look nice with the mirror finish and yellow clock shining through. That is it's sales quality. The materials are all plastic and I wonder if it could survive a drop to the floor. The 1.5" speaker is not Hi-Fidelity. Other than the appearance, there isn't much else going on here, so you might think about keeping your current alarm clock. It just looks good. Think about that with the price.

Want Philips AJ3231 Mirror Finish Clock Radio Discount?

The fit and finish was very nice. The mirror is stylish but I really don't want to see my ugly mug early in morning.

The orange LED was a nice touch. Not as bright as the 'regular' green LED's on most alarm. On dim mode it doesn't light up a dark room.

The MP3 mode leaves something to be desired. If you're in the room with your MP3 player hooked up your OK listening to tunes, but I like waking up to certain music in the morning. I don't know about your MP3 player but I cannot leave it on all night without the battery dying by morning.

It's a cool alarm clock but only adequate for an MP3 Player.

This clock has a nice, modern look with large amber colored numbers. The alarm buttons are horribly designed, however. You can snooze, but cannot turn off/change the alarm without picking up the whole clock. The buttons are flush with the body and don't slide easily so you more or less have to pick up the whole thing to do anything to it. Not fun when you're half asleep. The body tips forward easily too.

Coby CXCB91 9 Band AM/FM ShortWave Radio

Coby CXCB91 9 Band AM/FM ShortWave Radio
  • Unit Dimension (WHD) 5.1 x 3.1 x 1.1

I understand that you shouldn't expect a lot from the radio that lists under $15 but I believe that manufacturer should deliver on the basic functionality. None of the short wave bands works, all you get is a lot of static and some distorted FM transmissions (yes, on SW band). Also, I've noticed that the the frequency bands don't follow standard convention, which could make some of them pretty useless (if they were working).

I own several portable AM/FM/SW radios and, although some of them have better SW reception than others, I've never had an item that claims SW coverage but has none.

On the positive note, AM/FM seems to be OK.

I have an extensive collection of radios, small, medium, large, analog, and digital. This radio is without a doubt the worst of the lot. The reception is so poor,it barely qualifies as a radio. I gave it away, but probably should have thrown it away to save the new owner the trouble.

This is the second non-workable COBY radio I purchased from Amazon this month. The clock and the display do not function, at all.

COBY radios are total junk and selling them is cheating consumers.

I will not return either radio (too much trouble) as a lesson to myself.

DO NOT BUY COBY>

Shame on Amazon for selling this kind of cheating Junk.

I mean what do you expect in a $10 shortwave radio? Not much.

Edited: The radio is now selling for almost $30. This is ludicrous. DO NOT BUY THIS RADIO AT THIS PRICE.

I haven't used mine a lot, so it hasn't worn out like those of other reviewers, but it's obviously cheaply made. The outside edge of the off-center tuning knob grates on the case (I guess I could take a knife to the case). The buttons are flimsy. It just screams CHEAP.

Performance figures are weak. It has a problem with images, stations from one place on the dial appearing on another.

If all you want to spend is $10 I suppose this radio is as good as any in that price range, but I question what good you'd get from a radio of this quality, particularly with the reports of it breaking easily. Maybe you could find something at a thrift store. I can't think off hand, of any shortwave receiver I could recommend in this price range.

For $20, you can get the Kaito WRX-911 AM/FM Shortwave Radio, Blue which is a much better radio both in construction and performance. That one isn't a throwaway like the Coby.

It is exactly what I wanted, a very lightweight radio for hiking. It weighs almost nothing and is a great addition to my hikes. It is not a world class receiver, but it is well worth the $10 I paid for it. It receives everything I want to. FM is great but AM it can only receive close stations. SW so far so good. Just know what you are buying, it is a $10 radio and it is worth every penny. The clock and alarm work fine. Build quality is acceptable considering the price. Runs forever on a pair of NiMH batteries. Happy I bought it.

  • Digital synthesized AM/FM stereo tuner
  • 20 station preset tuning (15 FM/5 AM)
  • Auto reverse stereo cassette playback
  • Anti-roll mechanism
  • Automatic shutoff in playback mode

This cassette player was advertised as "new, unopened", which it was.......but a coupon inside the package expired in 2001! So clearly the item has been around a long time. But it works well and is just what I was looking for, actually replacing an almost identical cassette player I had that broke. I love the directional option so it plays both sides w/o beng tinkered w/ during my walk. The sound is of good quality and the headphones are comfortable for walking. I am very pleased w/ this product.

PURE Siesta Flow Bedside Internet and FM Radio

PURE Siesta Flow Bedside Internet and FM Radio
  • Internet and FM radio
  • Flow technology for listen again, podcasts, PURE Sounds and media streaming from a computer
  • Touch-sensitive controls
  • Four quick-set alarm buttons - Up to 365 different amazing, weird and wonderful internet alarms
  • Sleep and snooze timers

I have 4 internet radios... this was by far the most inexpensive and I purchased it for bedside.

Overall, not bad at all... but some points you are going to want to be aware of: this is not for the inexperienced wifi user. Definitely not one for the parents. The interface is just too challenging. And any unit with those "touch and wipe" controls is going to frustrate a novice.

Next is the sound. Fine for bedside. But this is not a unit for primary listening. Essentially it is as advertised: "a bedside internet radio". And for the price, you can't go wrong. Just take a deep breath and use patience. The manual is ok.. it's executing the sequences that will lead you off the Ambien.

Enjoy.

I paired the Siesta Flow with a computer speaker and subwoofer system to have a cheap Internet radio for my patio. I did not need the clock radio function, but this was the cheapest option I could find that also had built-in FM radio and auxiliary jack so I could also listen to songs on my phone. I was pleasantly surprised that this clock radio also has a USB charger.

Downside: The touch buttons to navigate are kind of a pain to use. I will probably also order the Pure One radio with radial knobs that should make changing channels easier. A remote would have been nice.

Strangely, this radio is advertised as a bedroom radio. Yet it sorely lacks many of the desirability of bedroom functions. To start with, it MUST have physical bottoms for memory presets to be accessed even in the dark. None! It needs some physical controls that one can "Feel" and use in the dark when his/her better half may be fast asleep. Not only does one need to turn the light on to find the controls, but, while intuitive, it simply is way time consuming to bother when one is ready to go to bed or trying to go to bed. The so called auto diming while not that bright, it does not dim to darkness like many of the competition do. What were the engineers thinking when they provided 5 physical buttons for Alarm settings and none for favourite presets? Lastly, while many people may like its size, I like to have a radio that won't slide all over whatever top it is placed on when one is pressing the control buttons. It is too small for my taste.

Very effective as an alarm clock and internet radio. The Pure website has pure sounds, which are a great feature in addition to the thousands of stations.

Duracell Copper Top 9V Batteries - 12 units (12 packs of 1)

Duracell Copper Top 9V Batteries - 12 unitsI ordered a pack of a dozen 9V Duracell batteries from Blinq, and they arrived with a "Best before" date that was only seven months away. In my experience, Duracells bought locally or at other websites generally have "Best before" dates which are several years away. I'm not sure that I will be able to use all twelve of these within seven months, so I wish they were not so old.

I mean it's Duracell, need I say more. I placed them in my smoke detecors, no problems as yet. Hopefully I don't find out the hard way.

Buy Duracell Copper Top 9V Batteries - 12 units (12 packs of 1) Now

Duracell 9 volts are the only batteries I use in the wireless microphones we use for our instructional video business. We replace the batteries before every shoot and sometime run for up to 10 hours non-stop. Wireless microphones use a lot of power and we have found that the Duracell batteries can make it through an entire day of shooting, lasting about 25% longer than the less expensive generic types we tried before.

We also use Duracell 9 volts in our smoke detectors at home. They might be more expensive than some, but they are worth it in the long run.

Highly recommended!

Motorola W260g Prepaid Phone (Tracfone)

Motorola W260g Prepaid PhoneThis is a slim flip style phone that you get the basic description up above. I will concentrate reviewing what may help you decide if it's right for you.

First go to the Tracfone website to do several things. You will input your zip code to see what phones are available in your area (on the buy phone tab). After confirming your city, carefully check the web address page that will appear in your browser. Somewhere in the string of characters there will be either a GSM5AT (ATT and Tmobile), GSM5 (Tmobile), or GSM4 (ATT). Those are the two providers that Tracfone currently uses. This code will tell you who is in your area. If you are lucky to be in a dual provider area, select your W260g (or actually any other) carefully by looking at the white label on the bottom of the box (if shopping in a store). The phones (and sim cards) are specific to only one provider. The top line of the white label will have a string that will contain either TFMTW260SP5PSDM (Tmobile) or TFMTW260SP4SDM (ATT). Pick a phone for a provider that you have better coverage with in the area that you will be using the phone most often. You cannot swap a P4 sim into a P5 phone and vice versa. They are sold married to each other only.

Second, select this phone in a "Bonus Pack" package only. It is only a couple of bucks more and includes car and home charger, a case, earphone and most important "Free Double Minutes For Life" (FDML). That is what the last two digits in the code above stand for. This means when you buy a 60 minute card, you will get 120 minutes, etc.

Third, always Google "bonus codes" and Tracfone when buying air time for current offers that will add even more minutes to your card/phone. I typically buy a 60 minute card, get double minutes up to 120, then get 60 additional bonus code minutes. So a 60 minute card can get you 180 minutes.

Fourth, activate on line on Tracfone website. You will get 10 minutes free.

Fifth, when you first get assigned a new phone number, be aware that someone may have had it before you. They may have had a "history", such as bad credit. If you don't want to load up your voice mail with unwanted messages, do not set up the voice mail for a couple of weeks, or have Tracfone "unset it" up for you. You can also set the unwanted caller numbers up as "ignore a, b, c, d etc" in the directory. You then hit "ignore" soft button (the one on the right of select circle)when they call, and not lose any minutes.

Now the rest of the review. The phone looks nice and modern with a sleek shiny black surface. Feels good in the hand. The charging and earphone openings have plastic covers that swing out of the way when needed. Unfortunately when you unplug the charger you tend to grab the both the plug and the cover, and the plug feels like it does not want to come out, or worse it does come out with the plastic cover.

The battery life seems optimistic at 6.5 hours talk time and 18 days standby. While futzing with the phone and all its features (not on the air, but with screen on all the time) I managed to run down the battery in about 3 hours. Not using the phone much at all I had to recharge it in 4 days. That is still good for a GSM phone.

Keypad is just OK, the circular pad is a bit small and I wind up occasionally hitting one of the arrows rather than the center circle.

The screen quality is good. You can only set the contrast, not the brightness. The various W260s I saw, had a good degree of variation between them some bright with a bluish tinge, some dimmer and yellowish. Both are very acceptable.

The reception and voice quality are good to very good (not excellent). I had both the Tmobile and ATT versions, and in my case the ATT had much better signal strength.

The supplied earphone (bonus pack) is single ear, pretty good quality, the clip on holster is very good, and both home and car chargers fully recharge the batteries in about three hours (updated information).

PS Tracfone customer support has been excellent. They answer on the first ring, sometimes are a bit difficult to understand, but get the job done.

I purchased this phone from another site. I have had it about 3 weeks. So far, it is a good basic phone, and the battery life seems pretty good. The Tracphone pre-paid rate is good if you have the double minutes, and they offer promotions that give you extra minutes when you purchase time.

The main problem I had with it is that the instructions in the manual for selecting a different ringtone were poor. Neither I nor a friend could figure out how to get to the advertised 35 pre-loaded ringtones. (Both of us have owned cell phones before.) After several failed attempts, Tracfone's customer service (both a tech rep and his supervisor) said it didn't have different ringtones. (They also said that feature wasn't advertised for the phone on their website, although it is.) I called back a second time to complain that the features listed for the phone on Tracfone's website were misleading. This time, the technical rep led me through several different series of steps, similar to what I had tried before and, finally, after several different attempts and conferences with her supervisor, it worked, and the ringtones were displayed for me to select from. I don't know why it was so hard to do at first, but I have never before had this much of a problem setting this on a cell phone. I am pleased with it now that the ringtone is set--you can set the volume for the loud ring so that it is fairly loud. The customer service has always been courteous.

(If you have a problem with the ringtones, here is what you do:

from main menu select Ring Styles -> Style -> Loud Ring -> Select.

The phone will display "changed style", then return to Ring Styles with "Loud Ring Detail" on 2nd line.

Select Loud Ring Detail -> Alarms, and an "Alarms" menu will be diplayed, begiining with "Silent". If you continue to scroll down, you can see (and hear) the ringtones. Seems straight-forward, but like I said, I made numerous tries with no success. Repeat for "Soft ring". Ringtones will not display if phone is set to vibrate.)

I haven't noticed any other problems. My needs are relatively basic, and I don't talk on the phone frequently, although I keep it on during the daytime. I don't text, so I can't comment on that.

btw This is my first experience with Tracfone. I activated the phone after purchase, was given a number, then started the process to transfer my phone number from my previous cell phone carrier. They said they would send me a new sim card for my new number. I assumed I would have use of the cell phone using the number assigned on activation, but instead I was without cell phone service until my new sim card arrived. They did FedEx the sim card to me, but in the past I have not had a disruption in cell phone service to transfer my old number. I don't know if this is their standard procedure, but it was unexpected and somewhat inconvenient.

We got rid of our land line, we hardly ever used it anymore and long distance was too expensive in our area. We chose the Motorola W260g Prepaid Phone (Tracfone) because it was affordable, and came with the proper accessories and it also came with a plan that everytime we bought minutes it doubled them. The minutes are easy to buy, either you go to the store and purchase them, purchase them online, or you can buy a plan that adds them every month. Its super easy to set up and use, adding phone numbers is a cinch, and its display is simple and direct. I didnt want any bells and whistles on this phone, we didnt want a camera, or internet capability, or whatever else all the more expensive phones have to offer. I wanted to be able to make calls, send texts, and recieve both. I also didnt care about different ringtones because to me thats not what is important in this product.

The battery lasts a long time, charging is easy also.

I would recommend this phone for anyone who just wants a plain, simple, product that works!

DO NOT BUY A TRACFONE! I recently bought a year and 800 minutes service for my tracphone. This past week I received a text message from them that said they were canceling coverage in my area and I need to find another provider. No offer to pay for my remaining service. The wife called their help line in Asia and they had no idea what was going on. After some time they talked with someone that knew and we were told that our service would be shut off on the 25th. They had to have known this was coming but they took my $120 and never said a word. What a bunch of crooks!

I have had cell phones since the 80's. I always had phones from the big carriers. They would die/break etc. They came packed with features i never bothered with. After getting completely aggravated with my last service provided I did not renew my contract and I picked this phone up. It is very simple, it seems flimsy but it's actually worked better than some of my higher end phones. I use my phone for the occasional phone call home or to a friend. I don't live on it. I have also used it to text a few times. My son has dropped it a couple of times and it's fine (not so with my last 3g phone) If you just need something basic without the hassle of a contract I would not hesitate to recommend this phone.

Pyle was a big deal when I was younger so I was interested in this little gadget when I found it on Amazon. Knowing how companies change and what was once good may now be a pos, I took a chance since it was for my 10yo daughter. I was pleasantly surprised. Easily set up and operable. It isn't going to fill a music hall like a Bose, but gets the job done and my little girl is quite happy listening to her music and watching her shows while plugged in to the PILC. Highly recommended over some no name brand for the price.

I wanted this for work so ultimately extreme volume wasn't a necessity.

I like the level of sound the unit produces.

My iPod fit snug and is operated completely with the included remote control.

Works as a charging station also!

I'm happy i got this. $50$ wasn't much for all the clock has. The clock is tiny but gives off great loud music and the whole thing works off the remote, i would buy it again, it's exactly what i wanted.

This is a really cool "clock radio, etc." except for one flaw. It even has a remote, which is hard to find at this price. However, there appears to be no way to adjust the volume of either the radio or an iPod when used as an alarm, and the default volume is very loud. In order to use it, I must turn the radio or iPod off (releasing the alarm), then turn it back on and lower the volume. That is a real pain. I tried to email the company at the product web site with this issue, but no one ever answered. What a shame. But for this one, albeit major flaw, this would get a five star rating from me.

Sony WMFX465 Walkman

Sony WMFX465 Walkman
  • Worldwide digital synthesized TV/AM/FM stereo tuner
  • 22 hours extended battery life
  • Dolby B noise reduction
  • 20-station preset tuning (5 TV/5 AM/10 FM)
  • Auto reverse tape playback

Having had several other walkmans, I was extremely pleased with all of the features on this particular product. I especially like the more compact size, the extended battery life, and I've found the preset tuning easy to set and simple to use. I enjoy the TV tuning as an added bonus.

I boought this walkman because at my job I am allowed to listen to music. Jerry Springer and my soaps make the day slip by. This reception is great and all the availble presets make this a great walkman.

I bought this product for listening to the Today show while I walk in the morning. The reception has been disappointing. I've also found it difficult to set the presets. Otherwise, given that I haven't been able to find any other tv 'walkman' products, this product is adequate.

As an inexpensive multiband Walkman this unit is quite nice. Its performance is good on FM and TV, but DO NOT buy this if you want a sensitive AM radio. It does OK with local stations, but is not for the AM DX enthusiast. The tuning is nice with an easy choice of next-step or next-channel. The memories are also straightfoward and a nice convenience. The unit came with surprisingly nice headphones.

Adesso Media Center remote control

Adesso Media Center remote controlThis is a great remote for controlling an HTPC. It's not going to replace your TV remote (nor will it even be able to turn on/off your TV), but it lets you control and launch media applications like a pro.

I use an application called "Eventghost" () to trigger actions based on which buttons I push. This is how I use the remote to launch Mediaportal, for example.

Once inside your application, it has very sane defaults for controlling playback.

It sends 4 or 5 different key combinations with each button push; there is no native software to control that. But paired with Eventghost you have customization, which is a good thing.

Being able to control the mouse as well is also a win. It's kind of slow, but it works just fine and it's great to have that versatility.

There are three different zones on the remote: mouse (bottom), control (middle), playback (top).

This remote works perfectly with Windows 7 Ultimate. All I had to do was plug the receiver into a USB port, it was detected and Windows prompted to restart. I did, and all features of the remote worked without a problem. I recently built an HTPC and wanted this remote to make life easier. I also have a Logitech PS3 keyboard that works great, (it has a built-in touchpad), but I thought that the remote would be more convenient to use and it is.

Referring to other feedback: I wouldn't call the mouse pointer control slow. It's adaptive, like changing the time on a clock. The longer you hold it, the faster the pointer goes. That's really the only possible way to do it in a situation where users may need to only move the pointer a few pixels, or across the entire screen. Also, on the "dead battery" thing; I wonder if the extremely tight shrink wrap around each battery was noticed? *I* wouldn't have, except I felt the tiniest hint of a seam in the plastic...

I plugged the receiver into a USB port. Windows detected it right away and set it up, prompting for a restart at the end. Note that, (at least on my computer), the screen resolution went very low during this initial setup of the receiver, like 800x600 or something. Don't worry about that, once you restart the resolution will go back to where you had it and the remote will be working perfectly.

Read the included manual for information on what the buttons do and have fun! The remote is a good shape in general, and just right for holding and using your thumb on the round pad to control mouse pointer movement. The mouse pad is kind of like the D-pad on a console controller and is very easy to get used to. Lastly, the remote is able to contact the receiver quite easily; you don't have to "aim" to get the remote to work.

The sensor is very good. This will give limited capabilities in XP. I used it to move cursor and can actually use it to forward using Netflix movie streaming. Bargain at this price! Works really well in Media Center. Windows 7 Home and Premium comes with Media Center Edition. Hopefully MS will add more functionality. I recommend this remote to everyone with W7 HP.

This remote works great with Media center. I was using it with XBMC along with event ghost. A lot of buttons emulate keystrokes so be wary of this. Also the mouse pad is useful, but really not as good as you might think. You have to turn the mouse sensitivity up high in order to get around quickly.

For the price, it does what it should and the build quality is good. I recommend it.

The Adesso ARC-1100 Remote control is easy to use and has lots of functions. This is the perfect compliment to Windows Media Center.

It worked right out of the box. I just attached the infrared receiver to a USB port and was up and running right away.

There is nothing that I do in WMC at my keyboard that I can't do from my couch with this handy remote control. And as an added bonus, the mouse controller built into the remote means I can do all sorts of PC functions with it and remain sitting in my favorite easy chair across the room.

And the price is right!

One word of advice if you are shopping for a remote control. The ARC-1100 is not a real or universal remote control nor does it pretend to be. You can not use it to control any of your other devices.

I highly recommend this product for anyone seeking a remote control for use with Windows Media Center.

I got this little guy hoping it could be a good alarm clock replacement, but I've found that it doesn't work so well in that regard. That is not to say that it is a bad music player though, it's just not meant to be an alarm clock.

It looks like it would be perfect as a portable speaker set for an iPod or something, due to it's size and rechargeable battery. Or if you didn't have a computer at work and wanted something you could bring in to play music files on. It's very portable.

The good:

1. sound puts out some pretty decent sound considering the size.

2. size smaller than I thought it would be. not pocket-sized, but not prohibitively big or heavy either.

3. looks very polished design.

4. accessories comes with cord antenna, line-in cord & carry case, all good add-ons that complete the function of the unit.

5. firmware upgradeable, so more (or more improved) features may be yet to come.

The bad:

1. clock displays in 24hr format all the time. I'm guessing Europe is the primary market for this thing.

2. When plugged in and turned off, the LCD backlight is on all the time. Might bother some people who are light sleepers. and when you have the unit on, the backlight has a 5 sec timeout? it would seem to make more sense the other way around to me.

3. alarm snooze is only 10 minutes, and automatic. I prefer it to only go into snooze when you hit a "snooze" button, so I can leave the radio running while I get dressed and stuff in the morning. as it is now, you have to turn it off after the alarm goes off, then turn it back on again, or else it will automatically go into snooze mode after 10 minutes.

4. you have to use musicmatch jukebox to upload music to it. well, you can upload music manually, like it was a flash drive, but the device uses a SQLite database, which needs to be updated or else it won't see any new music in the music folder. there are some third party apps for updating this db for you, but they are flaky at best. I just hate having to use an app to do something as simple as moving files.

The good news about most of these bad things is that because the unit is firmware upgradeable, Philips could release fixes for them eventually, if they are on the ball.

So, I will still say I like this thing, even if I do have to still stick with my older, uglier alarm clock for now.

UPDATE: the latest firmware for this has fixed two issues:

1) it now does 12 hour time display as well as 24 hour.

2) the backlight will dim after a short timeout period when it is plugged in.

Just an FYI.

This little device is adorable and has good feel in the hand, and I was satisfied with the sound it makes if it's just sitting there on a desk or table. However, I bought it hoping that I could carry it in an open-top bike handlebar bag and listen to it while commuting, but it's not quite loud enough for that.

Further, I found the radio reception terrible! It has an automatic scanner, but it could not find a single station in the middle of the San Fernando Valley, which is not exactly a place lacking in signals. Interface-wise, trying to enter a station manually meant clicking a tiny button progressively through every .1 increase in channel numbers -holding down the button would not automatically progress through them as expected -so it's a real pain to reach high-numbered channels. And when you do, the PSS110 is not likely to receive them.

My experience with moving files to it was an exercise in patience. It took more than 20 minutes to clear the machine and download a new set of files to it (4 hours music). That's just way too long. The small 256 MB size really wasn't ideal either, but might suffice if it didn't take so long to clean and refill with new files.

Of course I knew this machine was meant for Windows only, but it does run via a SQLite database. Theoretically it ought to be possible to find a Macintosh client to edit the playlist, but several hours of hacking around resulted in no progress on that front. It still might be possible, but otherwise you must use the provided software to manage its playlist. You can drag and drop files into it, but it won't see them for playback.

One final but annoying characteristic: the machine offers a way to randomize playback, however when powered off it forgets that setting, which necessitates navigating a couple menu choices down and around in order to re-set the playback preference every time it's used.

If Philips creates a new model that remembers the playback setting, has greater capacity and file transfer speed, allows non-proprietary access to its playlist, receives radio signals as advertised, and has a bit more volume, I'll buy it. This one was returned for a refund.

I purchased this product because I'm looking for something that I can use while in the bathroom/shower in the morning. Normal shower radios always sound awful and most don't have MP3 capability. Obviously I can't take this unit into the shower, but it takes up very little space and I can set it near the shower without any problem.

First the good:

1. This unit sounds really good for what it is. It's not going to compete with your stereo system, but the sound is clean and crisp. It's also very loud when you turn the volume all the way up. Easily loud enough to accommodate a midsize room. It sounds better by far, than any other speaker I've heard that is a similar size.

2. It has a rechargable battery, with a life of about 10 hours. Some people may see this as a liability, but I hate changing batteries all the time so I like it.

3. This thing makes a very passable alarm clock. Some of the other comments knock this feature, however, after upgrading the firmware many of the problems go away. After upgrading the firmware, you can choose which song the alarm plays. Also hitting any button engages a 10 minute snooze. Hitting a button while it snoozes turns off the alarm. I'd even consider using it as a replacement for my current clock radio, and then taking it with me while I get ready.

4. The unit got great radio reception for me. I know some people had problems with this, but after I attached the included antenna, I was able to receive a lot of different stations. I suppose other's mileage will vary.

Unfortunately, the unit has has some real limitations which as a result caused me to return it.

1. It's only USB 1.1. It takes quite a while to fill the device. I do not understand why they didn't go USB 2.0 on this. Basically, if you add the full 256 MB of music, you might as well go get some coffee while it loads.

2. It only works, officially, with the included musicmatch software. Since I run Linux, this software is no good for me. I was able to get this to work using a third party software package named pyGogear: http://freshmeat.net/projects/pygogear/ This software manipulates the SQLite database which the unit uses to access the playlists and what not. It has no GUI and certainly is not for the faint of heart, however.

I don't understand why they didn't make it so that you can just copy the tracks on. Granted you may not get the ID3 taginfo (this is my guess as to why they didn't do it) and hence song navigation by artist, album, etc; but it could still just play the music and maybe list the filename.

3. It has no expansion capabilities. An included flash reader seems like it'd be a no brainer to me.

4. This one is the biggy...It's only 256 MB. I knew this going in, thought I could make it work, but I couldn't. It simply is not enough capacity. It takes so long to transfer music to the device, making it painful to change the track selection often. I thought maybe I could bear re-encoding my MP3s to 48 or 64 kb/s, to get a larger selection on the unit but I couldn't. They simply sound too horrible at the lower bitrates, particularly through this device which sounds pretty good with higher bitrates. WMA isn't much of an option for me because I run Linux.

In short, I really wanted to like this unit. I do like this unit. It's so close to amazing (you have to hear it)...If Philips releases another one that uses a microdrive (a few gig capacity) with usb 2.0, or uses a flash reader (this would be optimal); I'd totally buy it, keep it, and give it 5 stars.

You have a _great_ product here. I loved having it. The sound is good, and rechargeable batteries make it so convenient.

You need to do two things with this product:

1) Allow music to come from a SD card

2) Use USB 2.0

Then you will have a winner and I'd definitely get one.

I just recently bought this at CircuitCity for $79.99.

The sound will knock your socks off. Considering the size of the speakers, you will not believe your ears.

It is perfect for my use on my school bus.

The FM is a little weak, but I use WMA's mostly.

If they would make this with maybe a 1 gig or 2 gig, it would be unbeatable. The 256 is a little lite, but for the price, I LOVE it!
