Timex T601G Nature Sounds Clock Radio (Stereo CD Player,Digital Tuning,AM/FM Radio)

Timex T601G Nature Sounds Clock Radio
  • Wake (or sleep) to CD, nature sounds, or AM/FM radio
  • 3-inch stereo speakers
  • 18 station presets
  • Triple-alarm system
  • Sure Alarm battery backup system

I bought this clock because I am a very light sleeper and most alarm clocks scare me awake. To start, the nature sounds are not realistic and they run on a very short loop. Second, I saw the name "timex" and assumed that I was buying a quality product. One day, about 8 months after I bought the clock, I woke up to a screeching sound that wouldn't stop (like fingernails across a chalkboard). I called timex and was told that they did not manufacture this clock and that I needed to call a different company. At this other company, I got no help (the measly 90-day warranty had passed), so I exchanged it at [a local store] for another one (thank goodness I had my receipt) for another one hoping that I got a good one this time. Sorry, no luck that time either: almost a year later, the same thing happened again and I ended up chucking this ... in the trash. Please don't put yourself through the trouble of buying this product.

I bought this to replace my ten year old Sony Dream Machine which was, at the time, the best alarm clock out there. My main requirement was no analog anything. The Sony's analog volume control slowly died making the radio inaudiable when it was supposed to wake me up so I didn't want to deal with this again.

The things I would be getting over my broken Dream Machine are 100% digital controls, three separate alarms for weekday, weekend and entire week (my Sony just had weekday and weekend), battery backup, and automatic daylight savings time changes. I didn't care about the CD player or the "nature" sounds as long as they make noise. I never use snooze controls but it's nice that the alarm-off button has a distinctive shape so you know when you're hitting it instead of some other button. It's great that the time and date are set correctly before it even comes out of the box.

Features that would have been nice are "atomic clock" adjustment, weather radio, and automatic brightness adjustment (this can be adjusted manually).

So far everything works but there are a few slightly annoying things. There are six preset buttons but they're for three separate bands (AM and two FM) so you may have to switch bands for that "preset" to get the station you want, or maybe not. You have to look at the display to see which band it's on. Notice how they put "easy" presets in quotes on the box? The presents aren't instant -it takes a second for the station to come in (the Sony was always instant). The FM reception is OK but the AM is as bad as any I've heard. The high end is totally cut off (compared to the Sony) yet the selectivity is also terrible. Strong stations will overload weaker stations +10 khz away. Obviously AM wasn't a priority. The controls aren't as easy to use due to the unavoidable height needed for the CD. The Dream Machine's top was also slightly sloped forward which made them easier to reach.

I don't know how long it will last but I think it will last longer than my Dream Machine.

I purchased this item new at a local electronics store. It functions good as an alarm clock. The CD player is another story. Within the first 6 months the CD player developed problems. Any CD inserted would spin briefly and stop. The display would show "NO" for no CD inserted. A CD leanse cleaning gave me a few more months of service. Several times an hour a click is heard in the speakers. This click is soft but can be a little distracting when placed close to the bed. The useful life of this unit appears to be around 1 1.5 years. The warranty is poor at only 90 days. This is one Timex product that Can't take a licking and Won't keep on ticking.

I thought this clock would have it all. Unfortunately, I bought the clock mainly for the nature sounds, which are not realistic at all. The ocean sounds are more reminiscent of a leaky faucet than crashing surf, and the forest sounds include an owl hooting just about every eight seconds (not very soothing to me). To top it off, the radio clarity is poor, even for a clock radio. This is one gift that is being returned.

I bought one of these a few months ago, & loved it so much I had to buy another. It's very nice to have all those station presets, digital tuning, and 3 different alarms. It is simple to set up , too. It is a wonderful little unit, and I couldn't be without it.
