Jensen JWM-120 AM/FM Shower Radio

Jensen JWM-120 AM/FM Shower Radio
  • Splash-resistant cabinet
  • Waterproof Mylar speaker
  • Ideal for a night stand
  • Hook handle
  • Built-in AM/FM radio

I have this hanging from my towel rod in the shower. The hanger part can turn to face any direction. I thought that was important to let people know, for those of you who decide not to hang it from the shower nozzle.

also, keep in mind that I did have a space heater on close by in the video review.

edit: 9/23/10hard to turn knob problem fix-take off the knob and spray with WD40. I just did this, and the hard to turn knob is now easy to turn.

edit: 7/23/12still works like the day I received it. sounds great. very happy with this purchase.

Got this product simply to hang on the pool deck without worrying about electricity or water splashes. Radio is easy to use and has a pretty good sound quality for the price. Solid-made and perfect for what we wanted it for. We just hang it on the deck hook when we're outside and bring it in the house when we're done. Wife has used it in the shower a couple times and it works just fine in there too. Easy controls...volume/on/off...am/fm...tuner dial. You can't go wrong for the money with this one. Recommended.

I live in Los Angeles and bought this shower radio to listen to either of the NPR stations in the morning.. the problem is that the two here are KCRW on 89.9 and KPCC on 89.3, and with this horribly inaccurate scroll wheel it's impossible to get 89.3 to turn on at all, and still incredibly difficult to get 89.9 to show up at a decent quality level. The problem is that the tuning dial is very small and even the most minute of rotations will send you to vastly different stations.

If you live in a city with relatively few radio stations, or are just hoping to listen to one radio station with no other stations anywhere near it, this is a decent shower radio that's plenty loud to be heard over your bathroom activities. However, if there is a competing station with 1 or 2 digits of your desired tuning, you may have some difficulty.

So far, so good. Better sound than my last shower radio and it's loud enough I can hear it over the water. Makes being in the bathroom more fun!

Was looking for a cheap, water resistant radio to use in the shower that didn't have a digital memory that sucked the battery between uses, and I didn't want to pay for any extras, i.e. mirror, MP3 or CD player, etc. So, when I saw this, I knew it was the radio I was looking for, and I wasn't disappointed. The local (NE Iowa) stations come in loud and clear, and late at night on the AM dial I was also able to pull in 710 (KCMO-Kansas City), 720 (WGN-Chicago), 760 (WJR-Detroit), 780 (WBBM-Chicago), 820 (WBAP-Dallas), and 890 (WLS-Chicago). These may all be 50,000 watt stations, but each station came in without interference, which attests to the sensitivity of the dial. The local stations (AM & FM) come in just fine in the basement shower. Love the swivel feature to point the speaker in my direction. Nice speaker for talk AND music. My only complaint would be that the dial could be a bit larger, but it wouldn't stop me from buying this radio.

Rio S35S Sport Digital Audio Player

Rio S35S Sport Digital Audio Player
  • 128 MB on-board memory; expandable up to 256 MB via MMC cards
  • Supports MP3 or WMA files; upgradeable for future music formats; PC and Mac compatible
  • Integrated FM tuner, clock, and stopwatch; water and impact resistant
  • Up to 10 hours' playback on one AAA battery; accepts NiMH rechargeables
  • Includes earbuds, carry case with clip and armband, AAA battery, USB cable, and music management software

I've been running for about a year now and have found that my endurance has increased throughout the months. This meant that my time spent running became longer, which then lead to a need for keeping my mind busy with music. In the past I've used several methods of listening while running (holding a cd player, making mixed tapes, radio sets) and they all failed miserably. So I forked out the money to purchase this little guy because it was right up my alley: a. 128mb is more than enough music for me and b. my computer is my home jukebox, w/all my cds ripped to my hard drive.

Pros:

-rubberized casing that is part of the player (practical and stylish)

-came with an arm strap and belt clip, I prefer the belt clip

-pretty small for an upgradeable device

-added feature of a stopwatch

-single 'AAA' battery

-nice integration with XP

Cons:

-stopwatch is a little difficult to access.

-"lock" requires holding two buttons...not that bad

-bundled software (Rio Music Manager) is not that great

-could've done without the display to make it cheaper

Bottom Line:

It's a great player for exercising, but I'm sure Rio could've abandoned the need for a display and backlight. Personally, I feel there's no need to display the song title because I remember what I uploaded to the player. But I'm happy because I have the opportunity to upgrade it in the near future!

I love my new SonicBlue Rio! After having read every user review ...I had some reservations with the key complaints (which were relatively minor to begin with): FM radio, software use/compatibility, and headset comfort. But given Amazon.com's competitively low price by far, I went ahead with the purchase.

When I received it (approx. 2 days using regular shipping), I had prepared myself to encounter problems with the aforementioned. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find the FM stereo feature not only works very well, but it did so both at the office (inside a 5-story building) and at the gym (converted industrial steel & concrete building). While the FM radio feature is usually not the reason one buys an MP3 player, it does come in handy when tuning into the TV monitors at the gym.

The software installed quickly and is very user-friendly. The downloads only take a matter of minutes for an entire playlist.

The earphones/headset is not only comfortable, but fits securely in both ears. The overall quality of sound is quite good, but as other users have mentioned, if you're a real audiophile, simply invest in a better headset that provides the heavy bass, etc. Otherwise, I doubt one would notice the difference much.

The unit itself fits ergonomically in either hand. The backlighting in the display is very useful, but the text can be too small to read when engaged in rigorous workouts, but that's somewhat expected in such a compact device anyway. The option to wear it on your arm or use the belt clip is also a big plus.

I don't know if it helps to lower one's expectations, but this unit worked out very well for me. After thoroughly comparing it to others in and out of it's class, I'd highly recommend this product. It's well worth the small investment! The only thing missing is a "free set of Ginsu Knives" to accompany it!

I was getting fed up of the talkshows in the morning and the advertising tirades in the evening on my sony tuner while working-out. I depend on music quite a lot for my running, so finally had to break down and buy an mp3 player. I am so glad I chose S35S, because it fits everything I had in mind. Light, tough, efficient and trendy. I upgraded to 256MB about a day after the purchase. The 128MB MMC (card) is about 80 bucks, but a good investment as it doubles the song numbers. I have about 100 songs in .WMA(the only way to go, since mp3 is usually about double the file size as wma) saved with some space left over, and with the shuffle mode on, working out to music is a breeze. Battery life is very good, about 10-12 hours on 1 AAA. I also upgraded to a Sony streetstyle (MDR57 ??) headphones which are much better than the supplied ones. The back-lit display and menu options are very easy to learn and operate.

The set up software couldn't be easier to use, with downloading and managing the songs the fastest I have seen.

There is a mail-in rebate offered by SonicBlue till January 03, so go for it right now, if you're in the market for a mp3 player for the fitness minded folks, or anyone for that matter.

The only negative is an abysmal tuner that fails to do anything, and will probably recieve a signal if you operate this inside a radio station. So that is a waste. And hence the 4 stars.

Counting that out, this is a great product, and since I am not missing the tuner at all, I would highly recommend this product.

An Update: After about a couple of months, I managed to crush my precious lil mp3 player under my truck tires in a freak accident. May be this would be an attestment to it's toughness, the display was broken, but the lil thing has refused to quit playing..Lets see your cd player beat that.

I bought this mp3 player and I am extremely satisfied with it. The player has a lot of functions including a stopwatch, FM radio, equalizer, etc... There are definitly no bugs in the program and very easy to use.

PROS:

1. Small (very small!!!), durable and handy

2. The software was excellent, no crashing, no stalling, and a fast transfer too! The program split the window into two parts, one is my library and the other is the files on the player. All the ID3 tags (tags that display the name, author, etc of a song)should be automatically added if you label them in Musicmatch, Real jukebox, or any other player.

3. Water and compact resistant (extremely durable, i even dropped it a few times on concrete and it still worked!)I ran in the rain once, it was working perfectly

4. Big LCD screen to display time, battery level, song title, song artist, album, a location thingy to display how far u are into the song, volume indicator, how much time left, how much time already past, and date. The resolution is very fine so the date and the time is not all distorted.

5. There are amazing functions including a treble/bass equalizer that doesn't distort the quality of the sound

6. The stopwatch includes laps, an average time, and the difference between each lap

7. The radio has a search option with 3 savable channels

8. A power saving capability to save power (cutting off backlight time and a saving power mode that acts like a screen saver)

9. A menu option to browse all the songs

10. Light and handy, i ran with it and almost forgot it was still clipped on my shorts

11. The cd also comes with iTunes and RealOne, both really nice music managing programs

CONS:

1. The big round set that has the Play, FF, RW, and Stop is easy to hit so you can't walk around with it in your pockets, on the other hand it is a good thing for running because no one would like to struggle pressing the FF button while keeping a even pace =)

2. The earphones aren't as comfortable

3. There is no remote control...

4. It uses an MMC card for expansion and MMC cards are usually 10 more bucks than Smart Media

5. It's a little thicker than most mp3's players (u can check up the dimensions) and its round shape looks a little babyish & toyish...

6. SONICblue boasts up to 10 hrs on one AAA battery, I only get around 5 hours....

7. no microphone...

8. there are no detailed instructions, just a quick start. The detailed instructions are found in the CD program

Overall this player is outstanding and I think that SONICblue has hit the target. As a runner, no other mp3 player would match this player's size, weight, and ease of use!!! The package comes with an armband, a belt clip, a pair of earphones, a cd software, and of course, the mp3 player! Again I would definitly recommend this for runners, or people who do sports. I would not recommend this for people looking for an mp3 player that is cute and small with advance features.

So three days before the Tucson marathon my Sony NWS-4 died on me. I was about to buy the Nike sports mp3 player when I saw a pretty good review for the S35s. Amazon.com overnighted it to me in time for the run. Within 30 minutes of receiving the package, I had the player loaded with music and ready to go. The PC interface and software are very easy to use; and unlike the Sony, they rip your CD's to mp3 not some propietary format.

The headphones are comfortable and didn't bother me at all for the duration of my run (over 4 hours). But, I found the controls a bit lacking. Buttons that I'm often searching for while running were hard to find (like volume). Others, like play and pause, were not recessed and were far too sensitive to the touch. So, any amount of bumping and you can start skipping or fast forwarding. And forget about trying to switch from mp3 to FM radio while running. You have to use the tiny little plasma display and start scrolling through the menu. Maybe on a long walk or a treadmill you could do this. But not while engaged in something highly strenuous. I couldn't even read the display with the player strapped to my arm. I tried taking it off and switching, but I only succeeded in turning off all music.

Basically, this is a very good item that could use some work on the look and feel of its controls. The Sony was a much better engineered package but it cost more and had only half as much memory. If you have time to figure out the controls it will probably serve you quite well. I cannot comment on the reliability, as I've only had mine a short while.

jWIN JXM122 Portable AM/FM Weather Band Radio

jWIN JXM122 Portable AM/FM Weather Band Radio
  • Portable AM/FM radio
  • NOAA alert system
  • Programmable presets for 20 stations
  • LCD display with white backlight
  • Digital clock display

I received this radio 2 days ago and it has hardly left my side. I am teathered to a dialysis machine 9 hours a day and use it in my bed. It appears well made with sturdy controls which are not easily changed by moving around in the covers. The digital display has a white background that alternates between time and station with the touch of a button. The white light can be used as a nightlight if desired. The display can be switched on and left on if you want. The tuning and voume switches are easy to operate. There are ten preset stations available for each am and fm band. Reception seems very good and sound quality for this size radio is acceptable. Stereo can be output to headphones but the unit returns to mono when the speaker is used. Other controls are small and could be difficult for someone with large hands to operate easily. There is a lock switch which prevents the accidental operation of other controls. I find no need to use it. The display is easy to read. The printing over each of the controls is medium gray on black background, small and difficult to read but once you get to know the unit should not be a problem. An a/c adapter is included. The unit is handsome but not something to show off. It looks and works as advertised. The instruction booklet is straight forward and simple. Radio is smaller than it looks in the picture and may not be as large as you expect so check the physical dimensions. If you need a radio for personal use (in the bed, office cubicle, or on your person) this one should fill the bill.

Buy jWIN JXM122 Portable AM/FM Weather Band Radio Now

jWIN is known for making many low cost products that are far less than what one would hope for. But when I saw the letters DSP in an ad for it, I thought I should try it.

The cons: AM has low sensitivity and there are internally generated noises on many stations. Memories are erased when batteries are changed.

The pros: FM and NOAA weather in the same radio, with excellent reception of both. I get NOAA weather & stereo FM up to 50+ miles, with telescopic antenna fully extended. Mono FM up to 85 miles for the 100,000 watt stations. YMMV. DSP permits reception of weaker FM stations adjacent to locals that don't use IBOC. Most of the radio can squeeze into my shirt pocket. Large digital frequency display with light blue backlight.

Features: 10 AM & 10 FM presets with direct keypad entry of frequency. Digital volume control 31 steps (volume 10 is about right for all but the weakest stations, when using headphones). The built-in speaker is of course small, but has fair sound quality with good volume. Requires 3 AA batteries, I use rechargeables. Definitely glad I bought it.

Just got the radio, so I don't have a batery life rating; it does work with rechargables. I got this to replace an old portable radio. For the price, this JXM122 is a very good radio with digital tuning, AM/FM (10 presets on each)and the NOAA weather band is a plus. The sound is what one would expect from a small radio, it is not a stereo system. It works as advertised. The only minuses I found are with the instruction manual. In order to save your settings you probably have to plug it in with the included power adapter while changing the batteries (3 AA's), which isn't mentioned. Nothing is in the manual about the lock switch or the mode button, but it's easy to figure out what they do. Nor is anything mentioned if when pluged in, the battery power is disengaged (I would guess it is). It has a clock display, so I don't know why it doesn't have a wake-up to radio/alarm feature. Without a wake-up feature why have a clock running and using battery power when turned off? (Hello? jWIN engineers?) Overall, this was a good buy for me and probably for you too.

I love radio and radios and I have a lot of them. The jWin JXM122 is one of my favorites for several reasons, the first being the reception. It recieves the nationl weather service broadcast clearly even with the antenna down. I've bought radios for over $100.00 that would not recieve the weather broadcast with three feet of antenna pulled up. Most of my weather radios recieve the NOAA station with a fair amount of static but this radio is nearly crystal clear. Also the size is nice. It's not too big and not too small. The backlight is very bright and the numbers are large and easy to see. The AM and FM bands are just fine and the controls are easy to use. It's nice to have presets. It's good looking and I like the styling. It looks like a much more expensive radio. The construction is good. Battery life is a bit better than average though I usually use the AC adapter that is included. I've had it about a year and it has not given me any problems. Great radio for the price.

This radio worked fine for a few hours, and then the digital display broke down and I could not read the time or radio band numbers. I sent it back to Amazon and it was replaced with another new one. This one works fine, except for the AM band, which does not receive ANY AM band radio stations. I am fed up and will not mess around anymore, but just live with this radio the way it is.

I bought these Jan. 2012. My Voice Alert system will tell me when battery charge is low and the last 5 "new" batteries I've put in has triggered the low battery alert. I will not be buying alkaline batteries from Amazon in the future if they're sending me "new" batteries with no charge left or can't vouch for the freshness of their products.

Want Energizer(R) 9-Volt Alkaline Industrial Batteries, Box Of 12 Discount?

I bought these batteries from Amazon and received them in a bubble mailer. The twelve pack of batteries had opened in transit and were scattered in the bubble mailer. Additionally, they have a late 2016 expiration date. I am used to expiration dates in the late teens to even the early twenties at this point. I don't know if 9 volts just don't last as long, but I would have been disappointed if my aim were to use these one or two at a time each year. Instead, I bought these for this year's replacement batteries for the whopping six smoke detectors in my house. I will have depleted them by 2013 so the 2016 date won't be that much of a problem for me. I tend to give batteries four stars, but I give this item three stars instead due to the packaging and date issues.

Sony CFD-ZW755 Portable CD / Cassette / Radio Boombox with Detachable Speakers

Sony CFD-ZW755 Portable CD / Cassette / Radio Boombox with Detachable Speakers
  • CD boombox with dual-deck stereo cassette and drift-free, digital-synthesized AM/FM tuner
  • Synchronized CD/cassette dubbing
  • 4-preset electronic equalizer (rock/pop/live/vocal), Mega Bass low-end enhancement
  • Remote Commander remote control (CD/tuner/volume/power/function)
  • Clock/sleep timer, Loop/Flash sound effects

I like to play music -mostly classical -at my desk at work. This past week the volume control on my old Sony boombox broke (after nearly ten years of daily use) so I went out looking for a replacement. I was pleasantly surprised at the low prices of most of the units I saw, but they sounded rather tinny compared to the good sound I was used to from my old Sony. At the end of the shelf I found this model. When I inserted the CD which I had brought with me for auditioning, I immediately heard a clear improvement in sound over the less expensive models. In fact, the sound was even better than that of my old Sony with which I had been thoroughly pleased. I bought this model on the spot and the next day installed it next to my desk at work. It's very convenient too use, looks nice (compared to most current boomboxes) and sounds great. Sure it cost a few dollars more than the inferior-sounding units but(...) I'd say it's a great buy.

Incidentally, although I listen almost exclusively to CDs, this unit has two tape drives, which allow for tape dubbing (which a lot of cheaper models don't) as well as a digitally tuned AM/FM radio. Also the CD player has 1-bit conversion -like the best CD players, but unlike most boomboxes -which contributes to the better sound. As I said, it's a great buy.

1 YEAR UPDATE 2/6/05: This Sony boombox has gotten worse since I last reviewed it a year ago. I just discovered that the right speaker (as you face the unit) no longer works when playing CDs. When using the radio or tape deck, no problem. The only sound out of the right speaker when playing a CD is just a very faint crackling sound. Understand that this boombox sits on a tabletop and is hardly moved around even though the intent of a boombox like this should allow for frequent moving. I'm pretty disappointed while I sit here listening to one channel on stereo CDs. Time to go shopping only after 1 yr of use! Not good.

ORIGINAL POST 1/25/04

Pro:

1) Doesn't look flashy and wierd like a lot of recent boom boxes.

2) Still working after 2 yrs. nothing has broken (no CD playing problems).

3) Does a basic job of making sound.

Con:

1) Turns on mysteriously at night probably due to a neighbor's remote controller on the same frequency as my boom box or being triggered by some other random radio wave. (has freaked me out at times causing me to wake up in the middle of the night and get out of bed to turn it off really freaky if the CD is playing my daughter's nursery songs.)

2) Setting radio station presets is not intuitive and simple.

3) Lacks decent bass sound relative to my Magnavox boom box, even with the "Mega Bass" activated.

4) FM and AM radio reception is mediocre. I live in Los Angeles with a lot of strong radio stations but some local stations just don't come in clearly without static.

5) Lacks the Sony quality feel that I used to know.

6) Price to high should cost around $60 for what you get.

Bottom Line: I expected better from Sony given my past experience with their products.

I have owned two of these for two years now, and have another one on my wish list. I cannot praise them highly enough. I am very particular about music sound and quality. The sound on this player is absolutely awesome, whether you are playing a CD, listening to the radio or cassette tapes! And it does quality dubbing from one cassette to another, and fantastic recording from CD to cassette tape. I am not a technical person, but am particular about sound, and I use Sony studio headphones to plug into this for those times when I want to listen solo. (I can also recommend KOSS headphones, available here on Amazon) I use those with my MP3 player and portable CD players.

I can say that my Mom purchased a Bose system for her home (very pricey) and she was so disappointed. After hearing this Sony, she was just sick that she paid so much, because the sound of this Sony player was better. I can highly recommend it.

Want Sony CFD-ZW755 Portable CD / Cassette / Radio Boombox with Detachable Speakers Discount?

I have this system for about 2 years. Initially it was great. Now left speaker does not work with CD's. It's still OK for radio and cassette. I sent e.mail to Sony and they offered refurbished system for 93$ (brand new costs max.99$) or repair for 110$.

It looks like a usual problem with this system (see other reviews). Next time I'll buy Sharp or Panasonic or Philips.

I had this stereo 3 years before I sold it. Great CD player, great

cassette recorder, and great radio. The CD player didn't skip, and

the cassette player made great recordings. Both the G500 and the

ZW755 are great systems, but the cassette player is better on the

ZW755, partly because it was a duoble deck and you could record

off of the other deck. This is a great portable unit! Way to go

I hve had it for a mnths and it works great easy to install..Nice colors..Great sounds, plays all types of eve..And when u get in the car and u forget the screen inside ..It will b to remind u...

Tell them that you buy this radio and 2 hours of installing it got the blue screen, but the dvd did not work, neither the aux or usb port, only the screen appeared with 6 radio stations, not even the full menu, report indicating that the radio was installed in a specialized workshop where installed MP3 and sell all kinds of audio and video, because it is for installation, the radio is damaged, for my bad luck to resend it costs me more than to pay for bringing and almost the same value that I would return it to pay the radio $ 152 I am writing to seek another option, this radius is Chinese and the screen when you get has some headbands brittle metal that bend and can be damaged removing the removable screen when required, in the end it was a very bad buy if you could qualify would not give no stars but must be put to record the comment ..

UNLOCKED QWERTY DUAL SIM QUAD BAND FM GSM CELL PHONE i5 PRO BLACKI purchased this little phone in white. It is unlocked and has 2 sims card holder and one for a small micros sd slot for memory. The camera works, the text and phone works just fine, but I can't get the alarm clock to work. It also always says A.M. no matter whether it is am or pm. So I set it to 24 hr format to just keep from getting confused. It does keep time ok. The battery does not hold hold charge for very long, the ad I saw said that a Nokia battery was available was compatible for it, although I have no idea which Nokia battery that would be, and I have had a lot of Nokia phones and they tend to hold charge for a long time so I assume that would be because they have good batteries. I don't have internet on my phone so I cannot comment on whether that works well or not. It is a nice little phone and I don't know why I can't get the alarm to work, I have set alarms in a lot of other phones without any problems.

loved it. It was just what I thought........ .................. ................. ................. ........ ... .... .... .. . . . .

The only it lacks is a LED flash which would have served the purpose of taking good pictures in the night along with the 2 megapixel camera, even though it does take great daytime pics. Overall the weight of the phone is reasonable and looks very manly. However i do not know if ladies would like this phone becoz of its weight but lookswise it is very fascinating. Connection is great too even in areas with low signal reception. Overall i would rate this phone to be a nice looking phone with very advanced features that would certainly attract people once you slide the steel keypad cover. I have had many compliments on this phone and am happy to have it.

love it....love it....love it!!! i have nothing bad to say about this phone...it's got everything i need and looks really cool!

Sony BCG34HH4KN Cycle Energy NiMH Power Charger with Four 2100 mAh AA Battery

Sony BCG34HH4KN Cycle Energy NiMH Power Charger with Four 2100 mAh AA Battery
  • Compact Charger with flip down plug and worldwide voltage allows for charging batteries anywhere
  • Automatic charge cut-off timer
  • Batteries are ready-to use right out of the package, no initial charge required
  • Alkaline battery detection
  • Lasts 3x Longer Than Alkaline

The charger in this package (Sony BCG34HH4KN Cycle Energy NiMH Power Charger with Four 2100 mAh AA Battery) looks very similar to the one found in a previous package (Sony Cycle Energy BCG34HLD4KN Power Charger with 4 Pre-Charged 2000 mAh AA Batteries). Both chargers have the same one-piece design with fold-in AC plugs, both accept universal input voltage of 100-240V AC, etc. But there is one important difference: The other charger (BCG34HLD) can charge each battery individually, while this charger (BCG34HH) can only charge in pairs. That is: either two or 4 cells, and you cannot mix AA with AAA cells in a pair.

Naturally, if some of your battery-operated appliances (such as LED flashlights) require odd number of cells, then using a charger which can only charge in pairs is a pain. But even if all your appliances use even number of cells, it is still preferable to choose a charger that can recharge each cell individually. This is because rechargeable cells often start with slightly different capacities, or they may have slightly different self-discharge rates. When you recharge two cells with unequal capacities in a pair, the lower-capacity one inevitably gets over-charged. This can cause its capacity to deteriorate even further. So the situation gets worse with each recharge cycle. Charging individually is the only way to ensure cells are not over-charged.

The batteries in this package, on the other hand, are very good. They are the low-self-discharge type, similar to the better-known Sanyo Eneloop Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries. Note that the capacity advertised here says '2100mAh', while the other package says '2000mAh'. But in fact those are identical batteries, because on each cell it actually says: "Typ. 2100mAh, Min. 2000mAh". I have tested those SONY cells using my old La Crosse BC-900 AlphaPower Battery Charger. The measured average capacity is right around 2100mAh, which is the same as that for Sanyo eneloop AA cells. The charge-retention rate of SONY is also similar to that of Sanyo eneloop.

As of this writing, both this package (BCG34HH4KN) and the other one (BCG34HLD4KN) are available at about the same price. So you should definitely choose the charger with individual charging channels. If you are looking for a faster charger with refresh function, then spend a few dollars more and get the Sony BCG34HRE4KN instead.

Here is a charge-time comparison for the three chargers mentioned above:

BCG34HH charges at 200mA. It takes 11-12 hours to fully recharge a pair of 2100mAh AA cells.

BCG34HLD charges at 360mA. Its charge time is about 6-7 hours for AA cells.

BCG34HRE charges at 550mA for 3-4 cells, so its charge time is only about 4 hours. For 1-2 cells, its charge time is reduced by half.

No, I actually didn't buy this item. Thanks to we-battery-purchasers-all-thank-you-NLee's review, warning about this absurd version [BCG34HH4KN] of the otherwise fantastic line of not-so-expensive-yet-quite-intelligent Sony chargers. Chief among its smart features: being able to charge any combination and number of AAs and AAAs. How does Sony dare to regress to pair-only chargers, and even more so, without any warning, in almost identical packages as the circuit-independent charger [BCG34HLD4KN]? Tss, tss, tss.

To be fair: Just as no one can tell from the package that this is a "non-smart" charger, you can't tell either that the smart charger is so this all points to idiotic marketing from this formerly god of electronics.

Enough said. Stay away. Say no the HH version! Get the HLD version! :)

Actually, a better choice (given the current high price of the HLD) might be the BCG34HL2RN, smart yet less expensive because it only includes 2 AA batteries, even though a paltry 1000mAh. It all really depends on current pricing, but I often buy the 2-batt charger, and for batteries the Eneloops from Sanyo ... Gee, enough said, I said!

Midland 74-250C SAME Handheld Weather Alert Radio

Midland 74-250C SAME Handheld Weather Alert Radio
  • Recieves All NOAA Weather Channels
  • S.A.M.E. Technology
  • Large LCD Display
  • 56 Different Watches or Warnings Displayed
  • Clock with Dual Alarm and built in Thermometer with Freeze Warning

Alas, the problem is that none of the handheld S.A.M.E. radios are very good. The main problem is short battery life -the best units run perhaps a few days in monitoring mode, the worst a few hours. This one runs for about a week if you don't touch it, but manipulating the controls consumes the batteries in less than a day.

The other problem is the user interface. Why do manufacturers insist on overloading controls to the point of idiocy? I have to read the manual every time I want to change a setting on any of these radios -the interaces are completing nonintuitive.

Despite these caveats, the Midland 74-250C does its job -a reasonably sensetive receiver and clear alph-numeric LCD display. I had to buy one of every handheld S.A.M.E radio available for a product review, and this one is the winner.

Like others have said, this radio performs poorly with respect to battery life. The display is good, reception is fine, but put it in warning mode where it is just listening for alerts and batteries are lucky to make a week. The controls are not hard to use but the quality is poor and I have buttons that stick on occasion. So, you need something to dump in an emergency backpack for use after an emergency this is great but if you want to monitor for events you want wall power combined with batteries.

After receiving the radio, it took way too long to get it set up for use. The directions could have been written in laymans terms for someone who is not that familiar with all the newest gadgets. I dont like the fact that there is no on and off switch either. It does eat batteries like there is no tomorrow, and even though the directions do mention a charger to be used with Ni-Cad betteries, none was offered as an optional purchase.

If I had to do it over again, I would look for one that has a on/off switch, and one that comes with rechargable batteries and a charger.

I consider myself to be fairly computer literate -I chase storms with a laptop hooked up to a GPS unit attached to a virtual COM splitter feeding into several mapping and radar programs, all while sucking data down via EVDO on my mobile phone. I've been using computers since before there were graphical user interfaces. That said, figuring out how to even change the channel on this radio was like learning how to defuse a bomb built by a dyslexic, colorblind spidermonkey. Doing anything requires pressing a recursive set of buttons in a specific order, and each button press is accompanied by a loud, shrill beep that will kill mosquitos and make everyone within 20 feet of you begin stabbing each other in senseless anger. I swear to god whoever designed the user interface to this radio was angry with the world and was misanthropically looking for ways get back at the universe that created him. The feeling you get once you manage to actually figure out how to set the time, station, and SAME code on this radio would be akin to the feeling one gets after summiting K-2 without oxygen, sherpas, or legs, if only for the fact that deep down inside you will realize that you are not cool and you will never see K-2 and that the sum total accomplishment of your life is getting the cheap, plastic piece of junk you hold in your hands to turn on. The AA batteries run down after about a week even if you never turn the actual radio on, and the settings all go away when you replace the batteries, so you are sure to have hours of fun several times a month rexplaining your radio with six digit random Navajo code numbers exactly where you live.

The plus side to this radio is that the cheap speaker hides the hiss of static fairly well, which you will hear often due to the extremely poor reception. The stylish "eyerape" yellow will go great with your Mexican Hornet wrestling costume, and handy belt clip-on will be sure to attact muggers who will beat you for your expensive radio and then come back and beat you again after they spend three fruitless hours trying to program in the SAME code for their cardboard box under the bridge.

In summary, I suggest that nobody ever buy this radio. The only useful purpose I can devise for these units are to mark land-mines, since surely a field full of these radios would be enough to deter people of any nationality from approaching.

First time I've got a NOAA Weather Radio. Read up a little online beforehand so I knew I wanted one with S.A.M.E and this looked to fit the bill.

I was attracted by the portability. and by the extra features of a clock, alarm and thermometer.

It was a bit of a pig to set it up, not at all intuitive. The instructions weren't very clear. I don't usually have any problem with technical stuff either.

The radio works fine for me, but the local weather station is a very few miles away, so not able to test it further afield yet.

I use re-chargeable batteries in everything I possibly can, and have a stock of about 30 AA's. Way cheaper than buying alkaline. I have both home and car chargers.

The volume isn't very loud on maximum. Fortunately I have a multi-way charger that has varying voltages and a set of different sized plugs...

I listened to the broadcast for quite a while when I first got it to work (as I said, it's my first one), but after a while I turned it off, and left it on standby. The battery low warning flashed after about 9 hours.

I'll probably keep this one for mobile use, and get another one for in the home.
