I really did my research on which Kaito model I thought would be best for my situation, before buying.I was looking for a radio that was compact,well-built ,sturdy, and had a lot of charging options. This was the model that seemed to be the one for me.The flashlight/LED on this model is bright enough to help out in an emergency situation. I have no problems with the windup crank-it seems well-built enough for me.I haven't tried the solar charging yet, but I did charge up the internal battery, and everything was working fine-for awhile.The housing is sturdy and looks nice. The controls are nice and compact. It pulls in quite a lot of shortwave stations, which was mildly suprising to me.The antenna is long and pulls in those weak staions.
The two things that I don't like about this radio are:1) Once the antenna becomes bent, it can break off easily after that.The replacement antenna is $10.00 plus shipping, and I think that Kaito should get it together and offer the replacement antenna online for a cheaper price, on their website.This is one of the main problems with buying goods that are made overseas.Give us consumers a way to purchase replacement parts easily online Kaito!
2)The volume control has deteriorated to the point of not being able to give me a lowered volume without a ton of noise now-(which is extremely distracting).I noticed this problem after buying it, but didn't think much about it then.It just got worse. It might be OK for emergency situation usage, but if you want to rely on it for more than that-forget about it.

This product has been disappointing----at least in our area. The image rejection is so weak that we can only pick up one strong station----and that is all over the dial. Tried it out right away when it arrived. Difficult to tune properly, had poor reception even in the AM and FM bands. Several hours later I tried again, and the tuner was broken. I had my doubts after reading the reviews but allowed myself to be won over by the low price. That was a mistake. Radio was returned the day after it arrived. I suggest looking for a higher quality radio, I will be.

I had an older Oregon Scientific clock (atomic, projection, weather) that works perfectly. It projects the time in crisp red which is the right brightness you can clearly see it at night, and it does not illuminate the whole room. Also one can rotate the displayed image 360 degrees. My only complaints with that clock were the lack of temperature display on the ceiling and the hard to read clock face (old style LED dark gray on light gray). One can illuminate the clock face by pressing a button but cannot permanently turn illumination on.I needed another clock so I decided that this one should be much better, especially with the temperature being shown on the ceiling. That new clock was a huge disappointment. First it is indeed too bright it is like a projector that illuminates the whole room, although one can get used to it. The image cannot be focused very well, and it has only two positions at 180 degrees from each other. Because of that I can either have the image on the ceiling right (but cannot see well the clock face), or have the clock turned so that I can see it (but the image on the ceiling is at an angle). Another huge problem is the illumination of the clock face. When turned off it is difficult to read but unlike the old model you can turn it on. And there the problems begin. Some designer kid has had fun designing the display with animations and color changes that are supposed to track better the weather changes. So at night, while you are trying to sleep and get used to the bright bluish light from the projector, suddenly color flashes start playing around. My wife almost got a heart attack when this happened for the first time.
The verdict just returned it.

I like all the features of this clock, except that the projection image can only be rotated 180 degrees. It projects both the time and temperature at the same time, which is a feature I wanted most. I like the alarm symbol that is also projected to let you know the alarm is set. When the snooze is activated the alarm symbol (a bell) flashes. It has an AC adapter and a battery backup. The reviews I read said the projection was too bright. I decided after my original Oregon projection alarm clock finally died (after the projector went out after 7+ years) I would give this one a shot. I read the reviews and alot of people think the projector is too bright. I was shocked at first because it was bright, but then I thought how my old clock got more dim as time went on so I was OK with it. If you've never had a projection clock, you've got to try this. I like the fact that both the LED screen and projector are able to be shut off at night. The projector has a light sensor so if you turn your room lights on it will automatically shut off. Also the weather forecast is nice. I've only noticed once the forecast was not accurate, but again if it's as accurate as the weathermen it's pretty good. Overall I would give this clock 5 stars. It does what it's advertised to do. I hesitated with buying this clock even though it seemed to have everything I wanted because of the critiques of it being too bright. Those must have been written by very light sleepers. It is a bit bright, but I think that's just fine. I want to be able to see it in the dark and it's never bothered me! The crescendo beeping alarm is wonderful and sure beats those loud, irritating ones. It took a while for it to lock on to the sensor outside...I had to move it where it could see it. But once locked in, I moved it back to my desired spot and it works fine. The different colors are nice, but since I live in San Diego, I will worry if it ever turns green (snow). At 1 AM it does rotate and flash through the colors as it recalibrates the signal from Boulder, Colorado, but that's never disturbed me. I don't think any alarm clock is perfect but this is close. I had a marvelous but expensive chiming clock from Now & Zen but it died after about a year and a half and the time light was too dim to see at night. I initially purchased an Emerson iC2196 iPod Dock Alarm Clock Radio. It was quickly returned to Big Box Store for refund. Not only was it not actually compatible with the iPhone (my bad), it was a real piece of junk!
After some research, I decided to try this radio. At twice the price, I had high hopes that it would be 'the one'. Well, I couldn't be more pleased. The following things highlight the pros and cons of the unit so far.
Pros:
1. Alarms are easy to set and customize.
2. Alarm can be set to Radio, iPod (iPhone), or Line In.
3. Alarm volume level is adjustable.
4. Comes with a very easy to follow, yet thorough, instruction manual in both English and Spanish.
5. Radio presets are easy to set and use.
6. With five brightness levels, the display won't keep you up at night.
7. Includes Sleep and Nap functions.
8. Snooze button is huge so you don't have to open your eyes to locate it.
9. Despite it's relatively small size, the unit has beautiful sound that you don't generally get out of alarm clocks.
Cons:
1. The included remote is pitifully small and it is not intuitively obvious how to use it.
2. Contrary to another review, the alarm cannot be set to a single day. Options include 7 days, weekdays, or weekends.
3. Unit does not remember what track to play from iPod/iPhone. You must turn on the alarm, power the clock unit off, and set the track on your iPod/iPhone you want to wake to before docking it. This can be a more tedious process late at night than it's worth.
4. Similarly, if you want to go to sleep listening to one playlist, you will have to use that playlist to wake to.
5. You have to power the unit off to set the nap feature. Don't forget to turn it back on!
Bottom line:
I'm impressed. This unit is feature rich without being too complicated to use. And the price is very good for what you get. It gets four stars instead of five because I wish each feature had it's own button instead of a set/preset and sleep/nap button.

Here's what i was looking for:
1) Amazing Sound Sound Sound! I'm really picky about the quality of speakers. I have bose in ear headphones and paid a lot for them actually, so you can imagine how good the speakers must be on these! To tell you the truth, i went to Fries (A cool electronic store) to test out all the ipod dock alarm clocks with my own ipod to see which one had the best speakers, and Memorex was the BEST by far! I immediately came back home and ordered it on Amazon. To tell you the truth, i never thought such a small thing could sound so great! and especially for this great price!
2) A dual alarm. (for those of you who don't know what that is, it's when you can set two different times on the clock to wake you up, which is really efficient for me and my husband).
3) Something that is compatible to a lot of different ipods. I have a 2nd Gen ipod but my husband has an itouch, and Memorex plays just about every type of ipod out there, and also has a port for mp3 players as well! How convenient!
4) I didn't want the light to by shinning in our faces at night. Memorex has a really nice reverse lcd backlight display that looks really cool. (Which is basically a dim light in the background of the display, and the numbers are white, and even though you would think that the dim light is adding more unnecessary light, it actually makes the whole display very dim and almost sets a nice ambiance) It is in no way annoying. And the best part? There are different settings to control how bright you want the display to be. How cool is that!?
5) I badly wanted a remote, and this one has it! A small compact one that is so cute! What I love so much about this product is that not only is this an alarm clock, but also makeshift speakers for your ipod! You can use the remote to turn on not only the system itself, but also your ipod to turn your music on! So you don't have to get up to turn your ipod on to play it through the dock! You can even change songs and control the volume in the comfort of your bed! The remote works from almost everywhere in a fairly large room which is always a plus!
6) I wanted the dock to simultaneously charge my ipod. This is a great feature that believe it or not, not all ipod clocks have. This product beautifully charges my ipod to always full, but stops charging it once it is full. It's always important not to overcharge anything or else the battery will loose it's power. So anytime I take my ipod off the dock to play in my car or to go jogging, I never have to look at the battery indicator, praying that the battery won't die on me. How cool is that!?
Some cool extras in this product is that it will sync the day and time onto it from your ipod. Or you can do it manually, it's up to you. It has equalizer settings that you can change depending on your personal music taste. To turn off the alarm, you just have to push the power button which turns off your ipod, but your alarm isn't turned off for the next day! So you don't have to remember to turn your alarm back on! And you can choose on which days of the week the alarms will wake you up! So no longer do you have to be woken up on Saturday mornings when you can sleep in for a chance!! Too cool! I don't really use the radio, but that is a plus for some people. You can even preset your favorite radio stations!
I would suggest this product to anyone who is looking for a great alarm clock which will wake you up to your favorite songs with awesome sound and pretty cool features that make your life just a little bit easier!

I bought this item at Target, and it had all the features I was looking for. The only problem was the display. My spouse and I wear glasses and when we dimmed the display at night, it was impossible to read the time without putting on our glasses. Without glasses, we can both read the time on our old clock radio which has a .6 inch red LED readout. If it had not been for this problem, I would have been happy with this product. It has great sound for a clock radio, was the right size, has 2 alarms and can charge an iPod. So overall, I'm happy with this alarm clock. It's got a lot of great features -the gradually increasing volume alarm, option to have two different alarms, brightness control, remote, size and placement of the snooze button, etc.. All that's worked great. The snooze is in 10 minute increments, which is different from most alarm clocks, but not that big of a deal. So, starting with what would have been a perfect 5 star review, I have to work down to 3 stars because of one very big and two little issues.Big Issue #1 (minus 1 star): Occasionally the alarm goes off, but doesn't actually make the ipod play. This, as you might imagine, is very bad. The alarm goes off and the ipod wakes up, but stays in pause mode and doesn't play. I've experimented with several different scenarios trying to figure out what combination of events causes this to happen, but haven't figured out why it does it. I have a classic ipod purchased in September 2008, for reference. If I use the remote to get the ipod to get to whatever song I want it to wake on, and then turn off the unit with the remote while the ipod is playing, it seems to avoid the issue. That being said, if I have to catch an early flight, I use the radio setting on the alarm.
Small Issue #1 (minus 1/2 star): Setting the radio preset stations was not what I would call intuitive. I had to pull out the manual for this and it seemed like they should have put one more button on the device to make this easier.
Small Issue #2 (minus 1/2 star): After the alarm's been going off for an hour, the device automatically shuts off. Even if you're in a snooze mode at the time, so when you hit that sixth snooze, it won't be going off again. I only tend to run into this on weekends when I'd set the alarm planning to get up early and exercise or get stuff done around the house and that plan ends up not sounding as good in the morning. So not a big deal, but it would be nice if the alarm had some sort of lock out mode that wouldn't let you snooze it again if it's going to shut off during the snooze.

This is Nokia N78 North American version as sold by Amazon. It can run on the 3G frequencies of AT&T. It is brown back cover and black in front. I know in other markets you can get other back colors like blue, but North American version only has the brown back cover.The phone looks really cool. It is all black, cant see any keys when it is not lighted. When phone is lighted, you can see the keys and number keys due to backlighting. The number keys are flush on just four horizontal lines. I did not find any problems pressing the particular number keys.
The box advertises 3 months of free voice guided navigation, but inside there is no license code. I contacted Nokia over email and they asked me to call them. Now I dont really need voice guided navigation so I am going to save the hassle of calling customer service, but just to let you know, you shall have to call them to get it. I have googled and this is a widespread problem in other asian markets too, seems like a goof up on their packaging side. Apart from that, of course the Nokia Maps application is free. But even better is the Google Maps free application.
The voice quality is good, volume is a bit low, but I am bit old fashioned in those regards, these days all phones have this kind of volume. The surfing speeds are great, especially with WiFi. 3G on AT&T is fast too. You dont need to configure anything, just put in a AT&T SIM card and it auto configures all it needs for voice, sms, mms, internet. Pretty cool.
This is the only phone I have ever seen where I was blown off by the firmware upgrade process. Most phones ask you to connect the phone with a cable to a kludgy application on the PC, and after lot of headache, half of the time you are able to connect. For N78, the manual says the same, but inside the phone is a FOTA (Firmware over the Air) app provided by Nokia, I used it over AT&T 3G, and it downloaded the latest firmware from Nokia server, upgraded, rebooted and ready to go in like 5 minutes. Really really impressive.
The phone has it all, GPS, Wi-Fi, suports SIP profiles for Voip (you can use Fring), you can use the phone as wireless accesspoint using JoikuSpot, bluetooth latest profiles are supported including Remote Sim mode (an external device can use the SIM inside your phone via bluetooth, howz that for a modern car interface), text to speech for reading messages, man the list goes on and on.
You dont need to record voice tags for Contacts, whenever you enter a contact, the software automatically renders a voice rendition for the name, and then for calling, you just say the name, and it finds the right one like 95 out of 100 times, even though I have a indian ascent. Same way when some one calls you, the phone can say the name aloud, like john doe calling.
The camera is 3.2 MP and I am fine with it, I am not big fan of huge MP cameras in general. It does fairly good job of taking photos and videos. You can pause and continue videos which means you can make a big video in small parts. You have all the usual stuff of mode settings for camera, auto focus, flash. Dont expect this camera to be the only one to use, expect it to be a side camera, not your main camera. You can share directly to Ovi, Flickr or Vox. I have tried Ovi and Flickr, and Ovi seems to be bit buggy, hopefully will improve over time.
The OS itself is cool, does job pretty well, has some minor bugs, but those can always be repaired by Nokia via firmware update. This one has latest feature pack 2, which is more eye candy basically.
The phone does not have a accelerometer, which means it will not change screen orientation automatically when you tilt the phone around, and you cannot play accelerometer based games. Not a big deal for me. The new model N79 has it, but its priced higher.
Instead of using Nokia browser which is good too, go for Opera Mini and you will be absolutely stunned. Very fast, great rendering, you can see any web page just normally like you would on PC (ie you have option to say that hey website, don't treat me as phone, give me what you would normally give), and its quite usable. There is also a beta version browser called Skyfire which even showed me Flash!
For the price (around 300) right now, I think its smart decision. And yea, it comes with cool headset and data cable. Only thing missing from box is car charger which anyway doesn't come with any phone.
I waited for 2 years for the iPhone 3g and finally I bought the Nokia N78 instead, and I am not regretting my decision. I don't want to be slave of AT&T and Apple, instead with Nokia I am master of my device.
I am really impressed. Go get it for this price at amazon.
I feel (or at least hope) that my unit was just defective, so take some of the issues I had with a grain of salt it may not happen on all devices, but here are some of the things I experienced:
1. Camera zoom stopped working after the first picture taken. It's a digital zoom, so not the most critical thing in the world, but still annoying when you want to frame a shot and can't. This was fixed when performing a factory reset using the *#7370# combination, however once I tried re-importing contacts, the camera zoom would break again.
2. I kept getting the phone's welcome message about twice a day no damnit, I don't want to see an introductory video on how to use the phone, leave me alone already!
3. Browser would crash and freeze constantly.
4. Phone would randomly restart like right after going into Contacts to make a call.
What I liked
* JoikuSpot. One of the primary reasons I bought a Nokia the ability to have a 3G based wireless access point on me at all times is really powerful and useful.
* Screen. Bright, crisp, very nicely done
* Design. Obviously very subjective, but I enjoyed looking at it in my hand not something you can say about most Nokias
* Predictive text. Coming from an old Motorola, I hadn't realized how horrible I had it.
* Internet radio. I don't use my phone too much for music, but having all those internet radio stations has come in handy a few times and it's a pretty handy feature.
What I didn't like:
* Sluggish interface. This is my first Nokia smartphone, so I was expecting to see it fly based on all the reviews comparing this to previous Nokia models. There was a noticeable lag in everything I did. With fewer than 20 contacts on my phone, it took 1-2 seconds to load my list of contacts meaning I couldn't just press "Contacts + first letter" to start filtering names right away I had to pause for a second or two.
* Menu-laden UI. I know there are plenty of shortcuts for this, but really, somebody needs to be taken out back and put out of their misery for the ridiculous number of menu options put in this phone. How often do people really make video calls does that really have to be a default option when d-padding a contact's phone number?
* Slow default browser. Opera Mini was orders of magnitude faster, but links from emails still open in the default browser, so having that suck still makes things frustratingly slow
* Lack of camera lens cover. Not having it makes me nervous about ever putting the phone down on a hard surface
Overall, I gave it 3 stars because I really liked the form factor, the screen, and just the sheer power of what it could do. If I could be assured that a new N78 wouldn't have the obvious issues mine had, I'd probably give it another go as there's really nothing else out on the market that has all this has for those in US 3G territory until the Xperia X1 comes out.I ordered this phone from amazon, and they got it to me really quick!
From the moment I opened the phone I loved it. It was sleek, it felt great in my pocket, and the screen was bright! My only reserve on the screen though, after a few short hours of simply slipping it in my pocket, with nothing else in them, and normal use with nothing extreme, I noticed a slight scratch on the screen. I feel a screen protector is definitely necessary.
At first I thought the keys were going to be a pain to use, but they actually weren't too bad, they were definitely unique, that is for sure. They then became second nature to text on.
I was pretty excited about using the Joiku spot feature, which I tried and tried to get it to work, but to no avail. I even tried to reinstall it from the Nokia Download section of the phone and it gave me an installation error. Updating the firmware didn't work either.
While that wasn't a breaking point for me, because I didn't mind tethering the phone to my laptop (which is REALLY easy to do), it was a little letdown. :(
The voice quality of the phone (after all it is a phone) was okay, definitely not the greatest, but it was passable. This of course is very subjective to what is great.
I noticed the battery life was awesome! I still had full bars, even after playing with the features for a while and installing some apps like Opera Mini and some other Java apps.
Unfortunately, after about three weeks of having the phone it developed problems. After a full charge and a short phone call or two, the phone would get abnormally warm, almost too hot to put to my ear, and the battery would drain VERY quickly.
I did check to see if there were any open apps, but the only things that were open was "Standby" and the Menu. I had to send it back to amazon. :(
While I may have had a faulty phone, it does scare me to get another. I want one, but I'm almost thinking about getting another model.
Despite my problem and some weird quirks, I would still recommend this phone to anyone else.This phone has got lots of features for low price.

1. The navi button is very poor. Often times it doesn't work.
2. The response to the key press is very slow.(symbian OS)

3. The camera quality is very good. Both photos and video come out well!
4. The phone freezes often.
GPS:
5. One good thing is you can use nokia map loader software to load maps and stay offline and use GPS.
6. But if you buy this phone for GPS you got to reconsider. The GPS reception is very poor. Most of the time you won't get the satellite signal.
MP3:
7. MP3 playback and the FM transmitter quality is good.
wifi:
8. Wifi and browsing are amazing. But you can't open multiple instance of the browser. You may need to search for a good browser.
9. If you have data plan then you can also use google maps and gmail application in it.I must admit that I'm a Nokia diehard fan, so my review could be considered as biased by some people, nonetheless I'll try to be as objective as possible.
Cons:
Excellent price (I paid only $300, it was an offer I couldn't let pass)
Symbian smartphone: everything you could possibly need to comply with today's demands regarding internet connection (the Wi-Fi feature is just perfect as well as Nokia's web browser), the MS Office and PDF compatibility is something basic in this world, and the GPS adds a great value.
Huge capacity with the microSD slot (I use an 8GB, High Capacity, Class 4 microSD card)
The functions installed by Nokia are simply magnificent: from the FM transmitter to the music player, everything is just superb.
Huge connectivity.
The screen is very clear, and it's size is what I really love!
The option to personalize your menu's and almost every single aspect of your interface is an incredible advantage.
Cons:
Firmware still has some serious issues (i.e bugs)
The back cover is not a tight close, I mean that it moves a little which is (in my opinion) very annoying while writing a text message, just to give an example.
The surface get dirty with almost every single thing you can think about. Just holding the phone to check it's status will leave a mark. I particularly hate this,
The camera is not as good as I expected. The focus is sometimes hard to adjust, depending on light condition and object's proximity.
Volume (not many options, only 10 different levels).

I purchased this unit and had it for over a week now.I really enjoy it very much, it has all the features I wanted.
The speakers are excellent quality and great sound. The TV has a great picture, and the controls are easy to understand and operate. It has a very nice appearance, does not look cheap, the color blends well with the kitchen cabinets. I am very pleased with this unit, can't say anything bad, meets my expectations.
Okay, I've had this unit now for about 2 years, and the only thing working on it is the Radio. The first thing to go wrong with it was the CD player, just stopped working, then the TV gradually went dead, and does not work at all.
So now I'm out the money, and without a TV that I enjoyed very much.
They make these units to last for only about 2 years, it's too bad that the technology is not there for them to last longer.
So if your thinking of buying one of these TV's, think twice, you'll probably have to replace it very shortly. Not a happy camper, Pjay

Our newest one (this one) is just over 1 year old and the volume has gone crazy we used to listen at 4 or 5 level, but then the other day it suddenly jumped, and now a 2 level is too load (like a 7 or 8 original), and a 1 level is too low (basically sound is off). This is our second unit and it lasted just over a year The previous one lasted just about 2 years. On the previous one the unit started loosing the channels, at first only once in a while when you turned the tv on, but then every time you turned it on. You then had to go through the 10 mins or so to auto-program the channels. That lasted a little bit (month or so), and then it started happening while you were watching (about 1/2 hour in). In that case the screen went to blue, and you either got some strange error signal lost, with a bunch of random characters (numbers, letters, symbols) all over the screen. Sometimes just the gobbled up characters. In those cases unplugging the unit was the only way to unfreeze it/turn it off. After a while (at least 5 mins), you could turn the TV on, but now you had to reset everything, not just the channels. At that point I figured we just got a lemon and unlucky the warranty ran out, but now this one barely made it a year (just past warranty). Looks like I might just have to muffle the speakers for now, but if it is like the first one, I expect it will be a steady downhill slide to uselessness in the coming weeks/months. Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me :-(I will stick to my guns this time and keep searching for a reputable company to buy from next time, but from my quick search it appears only Venturer and Coby sell these types of under cabinet TVs, so it might be time to lose the kitchen TV (wife won't like that prospect, but we can't keep throwing $230 away once a year. Cannot recommend.

I purchased one of these 2.5 years ago as a Christmas present for my wife. At first it was great with a good picture and nice features. After two years it developed a high pitched noise when you shut it off. Now at 2 1/2 years the screen is dead in it. I have seen similar comments elsewhere. I first purchased the Philips Fidelio DS8500 Speaker Dock with Remote for iPod/iPhone (White/Silver) (Note: I have posted of review there as well) based on the good reviews on Amazon but returned it because it wouldn't allow the iPhone4 to dock with the bumper case and there was an omnipresent hum when I used the AUX input. The sound quality however was excellent. I then purchased the Soundfreaq and was able able to compare it with the Phillips before I shipped the Phillips. Here are my conclusions:
1. Sound: Phillips wins hands down. The bass is fuller and it can be played at a higher volume. Having said that, the Soundfreaq is no laggard. The bass isn't as deep but the sound over all is excellent. My wife listens mostly to older Indian songs and podcasts, neither of which requires big thumping bass. Both genres are more vocal oriented and the Soundfreaq does a good job. I have a different system for my periodic dose of classic rock/metal and any sound dock in this price range will most likely not do the trick anyways.
2. Connectivity and convenience: The Soundfreaq is the outright winner. The iPhone4 connects without any adapters even with the bumper case. No problems! Even better, I don't even need to actually mount the iPhone on the dock because of Bluetooth connectivity. It took 5 7 minutes from the moment I signed the UPS receipt for the box to having a song from the iPhone 4 playing through this dock via bluetooth. It works like a charm. Setup is a breeze and the convenience of Bluetooth is a HUGE plus. Similarly, I was able to connect my Blackberry via Bluetooth, so I no longer need to use the AUX input for my BB. The device can stay in your pocket or you can do something else on it while the music plays through the dock. Also, the AUX input works perfectly with no background hum like the Phillips.
3. FM radio: Works fine on the Soundfreaq. Not present on the Phillips. This isn't a very big differentiator but since I'm spending more for the Soundfreaq, its nice to get more too.
4. Looks/aesthetics: both systems look pretty good. I liked the Phillips but the retro, vacuum-tube radio like design of the Soundfreaq is very nice.
5. iPhone app: Phillips' app is buggy, clunky and is more of a hindrance. Soundfreq app does what it is supposed to and stays out of the way. Neither app needs to be used but the Soundfreq app doesn't irritate like the Phillips.
Conclusions:
1. If you want deeper bass and all round richer sound, go with the Phillips. I am however very satisfied with the Soundfreaq in this department.
2. The convenience of the Soundfreaq cannot be matched by the Phillips. I really like the fact that I can switch on bluetooth on my phone (I don't have it running all the time to conserve battery), connect and I'm in business from anywhere in the room. No wires. No need to even get close to the actual dock.
3. Soundfreaq is more expensive, and more than what I was planning to spend but I think I'm getting decent value for the extra money.
I'm happy with my purchase of the Soundfreaq and more important, the wife loves it. I'm keeping it and will ship back the Phillips.

After laboring in the satanic mills of Amazon's customer reviews for some five years, I finally have a product that makes me want to sing with joy. So, this is not the technical type review you have probably already seen about the Sound Freaq bluetooth music player.A little confession here: I got this beauty on a one day Amazon special for about one hundred and fifty dollars (trying to avoid the Amazon bot that erases prices and URLs gratuitously supplied by customers) and am I ever happy! Unboxing revealed a well designed package with a really big power brick which was at least as big as the one my laptop uses. I think it's three amps at about eighteen volts with a reasonably long cord. I straightened out the wire antenna, and plugged it in the back to see how it got my local FM. It starts off by scanning from low to high. Got my local classical station, turned up the volume to about 20 out of 30, and listened to some of the best FM I've heard for a while. FM scrunches the dynamic range a bit normally but it looks like the engineers at Sound Freaq have its number: the dynamic range was the best I've heard from FM, so it looks like I'll be able to enjoy my local stations much more now.
I didn't test the external sound input feature nor the iPhone input either. But the bluetooth got my attention right away. I bought this unit to use it with my iPad so after reading the handy quick use guide on the top of the box inside I went online and downloaded the Soundfreaq remote app in the iTunes app store. It's fairly basic as a remote. It has a drop down menu of your iTunes songs. But you don't need the app. After you are paired, just go into the ipod music app and make a selection. You should get the sound immediately.
First, though, set the Sound Freaq unit to bluetooth mode, duh!, a little nicety I forgot it won't pair up unless you do. Next go into your iPad/iPhone/iPod system management (you should know where that is) to make sure bluetooth is ON.
Next, if they are now pairing successfully, all you have to do is touch the SOUND DEVICE bar on the same page to tell the iThingee to pair up. Voilà!
As you are pairing devices, an orange bar in the center of the lower part of your Sound Freaq starts blinking every three seconds and keeps doing so until you turn one of the devices off. Keeps you from wondering if your bluetooth connection is up; it's hard not to notice.
If the Sound Freaq wide dispersion mode is on, you will not be able to adjust the bass and treble. Get out of that feature if you want to adjust manually. Don't know why anyone would want to do that, though. The sound dispersion, base down to one hundred cycles (hertz), and fantastic mids and treble amounts to the best you are ever going to get from a unit this size and price.
As a matter of fact, I placed this on top of my two Polk tower speakers side by side: a good use for them since I never was really happy with their performance coupled with my Onkyo 50 watt receiver. Can you imagine being happier with the Sound Freaq than with a dedicated receiver and tower speakers?
And I don't mean to disparage that fine brand of small radios and CD players made in Framingham, Massachusetts either, but frankly this is a much better deal. My advice is don't pass it up. I'm thinking of getting another for the patio ...
UPDATE:
Have to remember that when attempting to link a bluetooth device such as my cell phone music function or my iPad, set your bluetooth enabled device to searching function, then set the Soundreaq to bluetooth and REMEMBER to press the tiny LINK button on the extreme right side. I haven't had any problem since I started remembering to do that!!

What a great sounding piece of equipment!I compared it to a Bose SoundDock and it sounds better than the Bose unit. The Bose unit demo music sounded muddy compared to the SFQ-01 unit playing my own music from my iPhone 4.
The SFQ-1 definitely sounds better than the smaller SFQ-02, with fuller range, richer sound.
In the store I listened to some Dubstep (Swagga by Excision & Datsik) just to see how it would perform and it sounded awesome. The bass reproduction is surprising. I then tried Barbara Hendricks singing Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 and it sounded great too. The vocals were crisp and beautiful. Somehow it wound up in my shopping cart and I brought it home.
I'm listening to Vladimir Horowitz playing Beethoven Piano Sonata #14 "Moonlight" and the sound is amazing.
I also listened to Selena Gomez' Love You Like a Love Song and it sounded great too. Janine Jansen's violin work on "15 Two-part inventions" sounded amazing too.
Incidentally, My MacBook Pro is paired with the SFQ-01 via Bluetooth (i.e. wirelessly). This is going to be so awesome to have the SFQ-01 in my bedroom, the laptop in the living room where it lives, and I have the Apple Remote app on my phone so I can control iTunes on the laptop. Of course I could pair the SFQ-01 with my phone, or just dock the phone in the SFQ-01 and use the SFQ-01 remote to control it. So many great wireless possibilities!
My one complaint: the orange bar blinks on for 3 seconds, then off for 3 seconds and repeats. That's one of my idiosyncrasies, I don't like blinky things. I'm going to contact their tech support to see if there is a way to make it stop doing that.

Read numerous favorable reviews of the Soundfreaq Sound Platform and decided to give it a try. I was looking for a speaker that could be used with my iPhone as well as my computer and was intrigued by the Bluetooth connectivity. The FM radio was a nice bonus as well. After listening for a week, however, I decided to return the unit.The sound quality, while good, was not great. The speaker has more low end than you'd expect given its size but the highs were not clearly distinguishable to my ear. Tweaking EQ settings in iTunes helped some but not enough for me. At this price point, I'd hoped for better sound.
Additionally, when using Bluetooth, the quality suffers even more. Perhaps Bluetooth simply doesn't have the bandwidth to pass hifi audio but I noticed that cymbals and other high-frequency sounds often "sizzled" in an irritating way.
Lastly, the dock will not accept an iPhone 3GS with a case. My phone has the minimalist Incipio Feather case but even this was too bulky to allow the phone to be docked. Though a minor annoyance, it's still an annoyance nonetheless to remove the case each time you want to dock the phone.
While I loved the aesthetics of the Sound Platform and the principle behind some features (Bluetooth wireless, FM radio), the sound quality wasn't good enough for me to justify the price tag.

I purchased this radio for my desk at work. I wanted a digital tuner so I could easily get the station I wanted. This radio is such a joke. The tuner will just change on its own, just a few decimals but making the station unclear all on its own. There are many times when I try to change it back and the tuner won't work at all. It only stays in the 80s and I have to turn it off and on several times to get the tuner working again. Its very hard to get the radio station to come in clear and I sit next to a window and am trying to listen to one of the main stations in the city. A radio just shouldn't be this difficult. Tune to the station and you should be done, unfortunately not with this one.
