I chose the Kenwood because of the look (sleek, blue screen) and reputation of their other products. This product does not live up to their standards. I was really disappointed, and here's why:

When I received the unit, I started with the in-home docking station. I hooked it up right away and basic set-up was easy. You'll know right away whether you can get a signal from the satellite on channel 184 before you subscribe. The instructions about antenna placement was clear... it needs a clear view toward the midwest. That was a problem in my house because of its layout, orientation, and trees on the property. The signal from the satellite was weak and cut out from time to time. The antenna wire was not long enough for my home layout--windows provided too weak a signal, and the roof was out of the question. Eventually, I moved everything around the house until I found a sweet spot. What an ordeal, already.

Second, the FM modulator was very weak. I tried to tune in my home stereo to the freq on the sirius and found that the sirius tuner had to be within one foot of my receiver to get any signal, and then it was weak. With the hard wires--the RCA plugs into AUX on the home stereo--sound was clear and loud. Music at last!

I tried the car kit, and found that the satellite reception was weak there too (here a signal, there a signal and in between... silence). It changed dramatically as I drove across town. The placement of the sirius unit in the car was critical. I tried it on the front of the dash, on the console, in the passenger seat, and all over the windshield. There was only one position in the car where the sirius could talk to the receiver, and that was low-center of the wind shield. Everywhere else was nothing but static. Even in this "sweet spot" I got a poor, static filled signal. Changing freq was easy, but didn't help. No problems with interference from other stations, since there are few in my area.

I was even disappointed with the display. The blue was nice, but the station info was more than could fit and the scrolling was distracting. Changing the setting for display size didn't help: there are two settings for the screen: big and really big. (Audiovox screen for example shows more info on one screen without the need to scroll).

My wife experienced how wonderful and trouble-free Sirius can be with an "older" Streamer, so I'm going to stick with this service and try a different tuner.

The Kenwood is going back.

Nice setup for the sale price. At full price I'd try something else first. I have the home kit as well as the car kit.

The good:

The unit itself is a nice piece of hardware and the suction cup for car mounting is excellent. The extra 12VDC power cord to hard wire into your car is a nice touch as well. I have had no reception problems at all and the receiver stays relatively cool compared to others.

The bad:

I have a hard time reading the display due to the blue light. I thought it would be easy to see but I cannot see it well, there is just not enough contrast. ( Yes, I have 20/20 vision) The scrolling display is also not easy to read in either size. I would prefer good old amber or green.

More importantly the FM transmitter is weak as a kitten. I literally have to have the sirius unit on top of the radio to work. That goes for my real stereo and for boomboxes I have tried. This is a big weakness for me as it is supposed to be a "here to everywhere" unit, but only if it sits on top of your current stereo, and that stereo is within sattelite antenna distance to a window. I borrowed an older audiovox and tried it in the same place and the FM transmitter worked across the whole room and into the next.

Overall a nice unit, but the weak FM transmitter kills it for me.

I love my sirius radio, i really really do. I do not listen to regular radio anymore. The setup of this radio was simple, and works well in my Tahoe. The only issue i have is the car kit has broken and i've had it less than a year. I need to replace it but i cannot locate a place to buy just the mounting kit sans radio. I had it professionally installed into my SUV so that i don't have the wires all over the place, and it looks great, and i don't experience the sound issues the others that posted here did.

The Kenwood System-H2EC is a nice little unit however I've experienced plenty of short comings.

1) The FM modulator can't even broadcast it's way out of a paper bag. I pick up so many SIRIUS signals around me now on FM (thank-you Mr Stern) I don't even think I need a unit in the car.

2) The cigarette lighter plug is too big for the socket and pops out constantly.

3) The unit throws out so much heat you have to leave it out in the open or use it as a handwarmer.

4) The buttons are so touchy, the slightest touch will activate one.

5) Programming with the scrolling is a pain in the ....

6) The window mount is so big, I'd swear you could crack the windshield if you don't release the suction cup properly.

After having been a subscriber to Sirius for 3 years and having used 3 different tuners in my cars, this one is the best I've used. I live in the West and sometimes travel 10 to 15 hours at a time, through cities and remote areas. I've had zero trouble with reception in all areas, even with a luggage carrier on the car. The receiver is mounted on the windshield at eye level and is easy to read, compared to the others I've had (my Audiovox lasted 12 months and 1 day just in time for no warranty coverage). The FM modulator works fine in the car but I've always used my iRock FM modulator in the house which broadcasts just great. I also have the other Kenwood "Here2Anywhere" plug and play and, while it works fine, it does not have the FM modulator and the screen is very small, the latter making it harder to glance at the screen and read what it says while you're on the road. That and the fact that it isn't as easy to mount in the car causes me to rate the H2EC much higher.

This is a nice clock for the office, but I don't depend on it to wake me up. I chose this clock because of the dual alarms and iPod connection. The buzzer alarm is not very loud and turns off automatically when the radio alarm goes off. The radio is not good very bad reception that fades in and out without moving the dial or antenna wire. I'm going to find a better alarm clock and take this to the office as a desk clock & iPod speaker. The good features: dimmer for the display, 2,5, 7 day alarms, automatically updates with Daylight Savings change and you can adjust the volume for the sleep setting without changing the alarm volume.

I recently purchased this Timex clock radio because of it's dual-alarm and MP3 hook-up capability. The alarms are way to soft and I slept through them twice (and I am not a heavy sleeper). However, the worst part was that I was unable to read the clock face unless standing above it at an odd angle. The lighted digital display of time did not contrast with the background enough to distinguish unique characters. The clock constantly looks like it reads 18:88 instead of the correct time. Changing the soft display colors did not help. After two days of having no clue what the correct time was, I returned it for a full refund.

Timex watches might take a licking & keep ticking, but this clock radio is very poorly designed. It's difficult to program time/date (not intuitive like other clock radios). The off buttons stopped working after 2 weeks. I'm taking it back to the store. This is one of those cases where you get what you pay for. Now I'm willing to pay more to get better quality.

I'll admit, I bought this clock mostly for the shiny colors. The MP3/CD jack was an added attraction, along with the low price. But I've had it for less than 24 hours and I'm already sorely disappointed with it. First off, you can only set one of each type of alarm one buzzer alarm, one radio alarm. That doesn't really qualify for a dual alarm in my book, and this is the first alarm clock I've ever seen where you can only set one alarm to buzzer and one to radio.

The buzzer alarm is hardly a buzzer it's more like a "meep meep" sound. And to hook your MP3 player in to listen to it, you need to keep it on continuously, or wake up and turn it off when the sleep timer shuts off. I don't have an iPod so I can't dock it in an electrical charger, so that means lots of burned-out batteries. The radio/MP3 line in are both great-sounding, bordering on pleasantly loud, but the radio reception is kind of iffy. If I could set both alarms to wake to a loud radio, I think this alarm clock would satisfy me but alas, I can't.

The redeeming qualities are that you can set an alarm to go off every day, M-F, or weekends. Of course, I work Sunday-Thursday starting at 11:45 PM, so if I set the clock about 45 minutes fast, this would work for me. The daylight savings time auto-switch is nice, too. And, of course, I'm a fan of the shiny colors. But after having this clock for approximately 12 hours, I'm going to return it to the store tomorrow.

I've had this alarm clock for a year and a half, so that's pretty good because many others have said that within only a few days the alarm clock will completely reset itself as if the power went out. This is what happened to me a few days ago. I thought the power went out because the date and time were wrong, so I went to set the clock to the right date and time and as soon as I did, the clock completely reset itself on its own again. I'm glad it hasn't done this when I had to wake up for class or work, I guess I'm lucky. But don't buy this if you want a reliable clock that lasts.

I searched hundreds of clock-radios on Amazon and other web-stores. Trust me, this was the best I could get.

The design is just perfect(very stylish and simple). Brightness is just perfect on the dark(for those of you like me with sensitive eyes). It uses simple AAA batteries for back-up(will keep time and preset on power failure) but the clock neither the radio will turn on without being plugged in to the wall.

One nice feature is that the radio tuning is digital and not analog, also has presets.

Some people says that they found complicated to configure time/alarm settings. In my case it was not a big deal, and was not that complex either( and anyway you ain't changing your time/alarm every day or do you?).

The price is incredible cheap.

I love this article, I think this is one of my best online purchases(considering price/quality relationship) I've done so far in my whole history.

The only downside for me is that I was expecting it would turn on without being plugged in, but not. But anyway Im not on a blackout every day. So is ok, and in fact lots of the clock I searched before buying this one didn't claimed they turned on without being plugged in. So I think that's a lacking feature of all clock radios in general.

The display on this clock is awesome can be bright or dimmed and nice and large for those of us optically challenged. However setting the alarm on this thing is NOT intuitive. Even worse though is turning it off I've used the alarm a handful of times and I'm still not sure what series of buttons I'm pushing to make it happen. I wouldn't buy it again.

I bought this alarm to replace one that I was using that was an "auto set" prior to the changes to daylight savings time (aka DST) changing. This resulted in the clock changing twice a year at the wrong time. I tried to turn off the DST feature but I couldn't get it done, because of this I tried looking for a dual alarm clock that did not mess with "auto set." This was my choice, when I got it; it was smaller than I anticipated which isn't a deal breaker on its own. The problems came when trying to turn on/off the alarms and making changes to the wake up time. They require certain buttons to be pressed in a certain order for a certain amount of time. This is not something I would want to mess with when wanting to go to bed. I ended up getting another clock at a local store, that way I could see it better in person. I guess I should have known better.

I have had the Eton Scorpion for about a month.I use it everyday. Camped with it 4 times already.

Reasons I bought this was ...

1:audio input.To basically have a solar/crank powered speaker for my iphone (extends iphones battery life)

2. To crank charge USB devices.

3.Mainly to have something to charge stuff ( mainly iPhone 3GS ) during power outages, no sun, night time , emergencies.

4. Bottle opener. Because I am tired of not be able to open my drinks??? This space should have been used to store earbuds,an extra long wire antenna or perhaps a little raincoat/bag for the scorpion.

Verdict:

Solar charges itself in full sun in a few hours.

Crank charges itself to full charge with about 300 cranks(3 minutes) giving about 45 minutes radio time( much more if you use headphones) and Hours of flashlight time.

Even when the radio dies the flashlight will keep going for about 30 minutes or more.

Power input is there but no adaptor included. This unit doesn't take removable rechargable batteries(AA) but it could be incorporated through the power input if one knew how to add up AA or AAA batteries voltage to match the input voltage of the input.

Solar Charging iPhone: not going to happen without rewiring it from the inside. Panel is too small anyway and not worth it , would take days to charge. Get a Goal Zero Guide Ten portable solar charging kit. solar charges an iPhone in an hour and charges 4 AA batteries too.just awesome!

Crank charging is the only way they designed this device to charge an iphone. No charging from the solar panel or from the scorpions stored collected energy in its internal battery.

Crank charging iphone:tricky but it works.To get the iPhone to accept it and to make any sort of charging possible ,follow these steps:

1. use an iPhone cable not a knock off.

2. Set the phone brightness to the lowest setting

3. turn off wifi

4. go into airplane mode or at least turn off 3G .

5. Get comfortable becuase you'll be cranking for at least 7 minutes(2 songs on a radio, or a few commercial breaks on tv)

6. Here is where people get discouraged and fail.

As soon as you crank, the iPhone may reject the charging source with a pop up saying "incompatible accessory" and you'll feel the crank become too easy to crank.

The trick is you have to sort of jump start it to get the phone to accept the crank charge. To do this you'll have to do a quick half crank( like starting a mower or kick starting a motorcycle) and then you'll hear and feel the phone giving resistance on the crank which means it accepted it . You'll keep cranking after the first quick half crank but you'll slow down for a second to lock it in and then your in the zone. You can adjust your cranking speed from here forward.The iPhone will show it's being charged and the screen will eventually turn off so take a mental note of the battery percentage so you can see how you've done 7 minutes later.

Depending on how you've cranked ,you'll probably achieve an additional 1 or 3 percent of battery life. Yes this is not great or anything but it could help in an emergency to get that text or call out.

I figure to almost fully charge the iPhone would take somewhere between 3-4 hours of cranking.Good luck with that.

Even a bicycle crank generator would still take alot of effort and nit much less time to charge an iPhone because you can only charge it so fast before you damage the battery. So for the portability factor of the Erin scorpion as a crank charger , I would say it's doing it's job the best it can do.

Moving on:

I have taken this camping 4 times since I've owned .still works .I use the crank alot to charge the radio and light .mainly because I like to use the audio input so I can crank my iPhone music through a the scorpions speaker. This means 3 minutes of cranking for ever 45 minutes of using the speaker.

The light is great. Last a long time and lights up an area pretty well. When your walking , it shines a big circle in front if you and a med circle to the left and right of you.. A Nice spread.

The very end of the handle broke on my last camping trip so I had to learn to crank with out it. When I got home , I drilled a hole in the end of the handle and bolted the piece back on with a screw and locknut from skateboard hardware (last forever).

-cranks to full charge in 2-3 minutes.

-45 minutes radio(half volume)/ couple hours light.

-nice rugged rubber shell.

-antenna stores away safely.

pretty water resistant( left it in rain for a day, after drying it still works although it shouldn't )

-does crank charge USB devices including iPhones if your desperate.

-The caribeaner hook thing is nice to have. If it breaks I'll bolt that back on too.

Cons:

can't solar charge USB devices.

-can't charge USB devices from internal battery.

-doesn't take removable batteries.at night you have to crank charge to use the radio more than 45 minutes which goes by pretty fast.

part if handle broke but fixes easy and now is stronger than before .

-radio tunes one station at a time , no station memory.

The new Eton Raptor is bigger and the next step up to the scorpion with a bigger solar panel and lithium battery but it has no crank charge ability. If the scorpion had no crank charge ability it would be useless.

Since I have already had to modify my scorpions handle , here are my plans to further modify it.

-remove the bottle opener and install a mini aa battery charger(from a solar garden light,they are basically mini solar aa rechargers) and wire it so they charge using the scorpions solar panel or crank charge .

rewire inside so I can switch the radio from solar, internal battery,external AA batteries.

-rewire so USB devices can use solar charger, internal battery, or external aa batteries.

Maybe change the internal battery to lithium ion.

make a rain coat with a clear window for solar panel and pockets for a extended wire antenna, earbuds,and additional rechargeable AA batteries.

-if I'm feeling reall ambitious , remove the solar panel and make three solar panels that fold out from it ( like a book) to have better solar charging during cloudy days or triple it's solar power intake and charging time during full sun days.

If Eton did this instead of making the Raptor I would gladly pay $200+ and buy one (or two of them) because it would be all that I would need and I could carry much less with me when hiking etc.

I wanted a small portable radio for backpacking and had researched Eton's other products in the past. None of those radios had all the features I wanted. When I saw the scorpion I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a radio that would not be too heavy to carry in my overnight pack but included features such as line-in, backup cell phone usb charger, and weather alert channels.

After receving my Scorpion the other day I have used it extensivly and am very pleased with the device. It is very well built and is perfect for some music around the fire after a long day of hiking.

As far as each features are concerned. Flashlight Decent LED flashlight. Good for finding your way around in the dark. Not my primary flashlight but its on par with every other crank flashout out there. Radio Digital tuner is great. Picks up stations very well (I live in the middle of nowhere). Sound quality The sound quality is what I expected. It is about the same quality as most standard clock radios. It's nothing special but I wanted a rugged radio that didnt have the hassle of making sure you have charged batteries. If sound quality and size is a top priority look for portable iPod docks such as JBL's On-Stage. It does play loud. Note: when using the line-in function the volume control on the unit does not function. Volume is controlled by external device (ipod, phone, etc).

Overall its a great portable small radio for any type of outdoor adventure. I have since used it for picnics and bbq's where larger radios are more of a hassle then what they are worth.

During a week long camping trip-The antenna is too short the radio reception is poor no matter what band you are on. On a full charge at moderate volume your listening time is about 30 minutes. It takes alot of cranking or time in bright sun to charge. It was rained onlightly for about 15 minutes, it stopped working and showed an odd display & condensation in the display windowhowever after baking in the sun for a few hours it dryed out an worked again. The buttons to change the station can't be located well with your fingers, they are all stacked together in a row. You cannot charge a phone via the USB port unless you are turning the crank [and turning and turning and turning]. Except for the rain issue it does seem to take shock/drops.

ORIGINAL REVIEW (5-Star): This is a very nice little unit and it performs better than I expected. The hand crank feels solid, unlike others I've felt in the past that you worry will break quickly. The clip has a nice stiff spring in it and feels very solid. The radio reception is amazing and the retractable antenna is more than 7" long, so fine tuning is easy. The speaker is about 1.25" in diameter, but the sound is pretty good. Most of my vehicles don't get FM or AM this well. The clock is a nice feature and the display includes a battery gauge (similar to most cell phones). The LED light works well, but the three lights cast a strange shadow on the ground. It appears to be about as powerful as an average headlamp. The bottle opener has a metal ring all the way around, so you're not prying a bottle open against the plastic side. I've broken more than one widget when opening a bottle against a plastic surface...nice touch. I haven't had a chance to try the charging feature yet on my cell.

Overall the design and build quality is top notch. We're not weekend campers, but with two kids this will be a great addition to our trip gear. Small, lightweight, rugged and functional.

The only complaint I have is the placement of the antenna. With the unit lying so the speaker and solar panels are facing up, the antenna has a limited area to move around. But I consider this a minor issue.

Note: The dimensions are for the main body of the Scorpion, and doesn't include the clip. The overall length is 6.5", and the other dimensions seem accurate.

When I saw this product announcement I put it immediatly on my Amazon wish list as I wanted to suppliment the Black-N-Decker one that I have which has similar features as this one except no solar charging. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase as the Scorpion has a very sturdy shell and a crank that feels like it will last a long time unlike other crank lights I own. The light is also brighter than others I have owned as well. I like the fact that I can clip this on a backpack and such however I wish the clip were on the crank side of the light as it's hard to have the solar cell face outward if you're on a hike for charging. It sits "unnatural" on the backpack the way it currently clips on. Minor annoyance though. One thing I definitely wish was included in the instructions though was average charging rates for the solar cell. The light has a batter meter on it and mine came with only one bar from being full. Just for grins I put in in the front seat of my truck while I was at work to see if it would fill that last bar since my truck sits in the sun all day. No luck and even after two days it had not fully charged. Granted it may not have had full sun for a full 8 hours during the work day. I haven't cranked it enough yet to full charge it but as mentioned only minor annoyances. Oh and as mentioned in the other review, I haven't been able to get the USB to charge any of my phones. This may be due to needing to crank it to charge as it does not appear to use the solar cell or internal battery to charge the USB devices. I think it said that in the manual as well but once again it would be nice to get a chart of average charge rates and such.

Overall I will most likely be purchasing another one of these as it's a solid device. I have one in the trailer for camping and such and I'll have one put in my emergency kit.

It looks nice and works OK, but one annoying limitation I have discovered is that the MP3 alarm only plays for 3 minutes and then turns off. If you like to wake up gradually it's something to keep in mind.

We received this item and seemed very pleased with it. Within a few weeks it no longer worked. It completely died. The seller was unwilling to do anything about it. Do not use this seller. They do not accept any returns. Amazon suggested we contact the manufacturer. I have purchased many many things through Amazon over the years and have never had a seller like this. It was an expensive radio for the trash.

I wish I could give this product a good review. I will say the LED display is pretty cool. Unfortunately mine was defective from the beginning. It doesn't keep time for more than a few days then resets itself. The usb feature doesn't let you choose which song to wake up to. At this point this is nothing more than a basic mp3 player and does not live up to it's description. Save your money and do not buy this product.

I was given this clock-radio for my birthday less than a year ago. I love the way it looks, but that's about all the good I can say about it. I never could get the mp3 player functionality to work at all, at least not with my iPhone. But that was no big deal, I thought, because I really only needed to use it as an alarm clock. Well, within about 6 months after I bought it, the clock started to occasionally reset itself to 12:00. The first couple of times it happened, I assumed there had been a power failure and my wife had already reset all the other clocks in the house. (In retrospect, that's not really her style, but how else to explain the fact that my bedroom alarm clock was the only one with the wrong time?) Eventually it became clear that the problem was the clock itself. And today, it finally stopped working altogether: the time reset itself to 2:19am, and the clock became unresponsive to any button presses. I unplugged it from the wall power, waited a few hours, and plugged it in again, but still: 2:19am.

Before getting this clock, I assumed that all digital clocks used more or less the same electronic guts inside, and were only different in surface appearance and button locations. But apparently some of them manage to fail at the basic task of being a functioning clock. If you're planning on buying a handsome gift for your spouse, look elsewhere. My wife was mortified when she found out the beautiful clock she'd bought me was a lemon!

I bought this to replace a Cambridge Soundworks entertainment center knowing full well that I was making a huge step down and the sound and options would be much less superior, but I no longer needed such a "high end" clock radio for my bedroom anymore. I was looking to replace my system with a simple iPod docking station with alarm clock radio. However following the initial set-up, the AM/FM radio is not a strong tuner and fails to stay tuned regardless of where you position the antenna.

PROS: The dimmer has 3 settings and the lowest one is excellent for night time. The clock readout is a good readable size. The sound is perfectly fine for the money.

CONS: The control buttons are poor quality and I would expect them to break in less than a year. If you are a Normandy landing veteran, you will be reminded of the "cricket" clacker every time you depress the volume and tuning buttons. Pretty annoying. The other buttons and lettering are too small and poorly marked. The paint on the "clock/set" button was almost unreadable.

I will return this unit after trying it out for a week.

I bought this at the end of January, it is now the end of March and it is dead. I can charge my phone but that is it. of course it is out of warranty thru amazon. I can hope the company will do something

I read the reviews of this product and decided to but it despite the negative vibes since the price seemed right despite imperfections. However, I returned it because the clock wouldn't stay on time. It seemed like I kept having to set the time up by a few minutes here and there. My final draw happened after being out of town for a weekend and coming back to a clock that was two hours behind, despite having back up batteries in place. Other than this malfunction, it really seemed like a great clock for the price, however I know I'm not the only one with complaints about it simply not working. I ordered a iHome iP42 today, the only iPhone compatable alarm clock apple sells on their website. Great reviews too, but much cheaper on amazon. Just beef up and spend the extra money to save time and inconvenience.
