Sangean RCR-2 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio (Silver)

Sangean RCR-2 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio
  • Updates time automatically from US atomic clock
  • Dual alarms
  • Automatic preset station option
  • Modern styling
  • Gentle wake-up alarm
  • Easy to read LCD display
  • HWS (Humane Wake System)
  • PLL tuner
  • Radio Controlled clock available for DCF/WWVB/MSF/JJY
  • Weekday selection; Time zone selector switch

I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect alarm clock for my bedroom and, as you can tell, I am still looking. The Sangean RCR-2 certainly has some attractive features like the atomic clock, which took a few hours to set itself, and the nice styling but it fails in so many areas as an alarm clock. First, and most importantly, the display is unreadable. It is very busy with lots of symbols and numbers but using very thin LCD numerals for the time and the off axis viewing angle is very small; you must basically face it head on. Worst of all, however, is the blindingly bright orange backlight with makes is impossible for night adjusted eyes to read the display if you want to check the time in the middle of the night. It is so bright as to cast shadows throughout the room. I keep it across the room but I can't imagine trying to sleep with this minor sun positioned on the nightstand. Sure, you can turn off the backlight but then the clock is invisible at night. Maybe LEDs are not cool but they make a lot more sense for an alarm clock. Also, it takes at least four button presses to turn on the alarm as opposed to one on my old alarm.

Buy Sangean RCR-2 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio (Silver) Now

I own several radios and clock radios, including CCrane's CCRadio (made by Sangean) and the GE SuperRadio. Some of the negatives given in reviews above have an element of truth, but are overblown, in my view.

Compared to the CCRadio (the several year old one, I don't have the more recent CCRadio Plus):

* The RCR-2 is noticeably smaller. It is somewhat narrower, and half the height. It is twice as deep. It feels solid, heavy, and polished.

* The extra buttons make it quite a bit easier to use. Sangean is still no Apple or Timex when it comes to making intuitive interfaces, so the interface will still confuse some. And while Sangean has improved on their translation of the instruction booklet, it still leaves much unsaid. But the function of each button is clearer and simpler, with less strange overloading of uses.

* The CCRadio used any button for Snooze, so I could not switch stations, or just turn the radio OFF in the morning, without pushing the ON/OFF button 3 times, to get it out of snooze mode, and just plain OFF. The RCR-2 only uses the one up/down big tuning button for snooze, so other buttons continue to function for their primary purpose in the morning. This is good.

* The front third of the RCR-2 is polished metal, with a closely fit clear face plate over the front. The buttons are a very solid feeling, smooth polished round metal nubs with strong spring loading. This is good for most of the buttons, though the snooze (big up/down bar) button requires more focused pressure than I like first thing in the morning.

* The CCRadio buttons are flimsier feeling plastic, and have some annoying delays -you have to hold them a major fraction of a second to take affect (debounce circuitry, I guess). You hold the CCRadio station selection buttons perhaps a half second to change station, but not more than two seconds, or you just reprogrammed the memory. This is an annoyingly small window between the times required for the two functions. I have not noticed any such timing problems with the RCR-2 -the station selection buttons take affect immediately, so far as I can tell.

* The 7-day programming, and display, is the first such I have used since a Sony model, many years ago. Each of the two alarms gets one programmable time, and can be enabled or disabled independently for each of the 7 days. Each of the seven days of the week gets its own button, and the status of each day is separately shown on the display. Nice.

* I haven't pushed the radio tuner yet, except to note that the one weak AM station I like, late at night, which only my best radios (the CCRadio and GE SuperRadio) can pick up, also came in just fine on the RCR-2. So I assume this is another fine Sangean AM frontend.

* The RCR-2 display is _much_ more readable than the CCRadio display. There is _no_ angle from which I can read the smaller details on the CCRadio display, except when I hold a flashlight just right and squint through my good eye. The RCR-2 display is crystal clear from a range of angles (and utterly invisible or unreadable, outside that range). You must view it from straight on or from above, looking down, but not more than about 20 or 30 degrees above the horizontal. If you are more than 5 or 10 degrees below the horizon, looking up, it is _completely_ invisible, with just an orange lit rectangle. You can look from the left or right of straight on by 20 degrees and see an excellent display, or perhaps 40 degrees to the left or right and still make out the numbers. The backlight is just from one side (the right), but covers the whole display fairly well, only mildly less bright on the left side. The backlight on my CCRadio is utterly dark on the opposite side, and only marginally useful. The orange backlight on the RCR-2 is almost bright enough to use for a night light, which some folks who like real darkness for sleeping will find way excessive they will have to turn the light off. Personally, I can sleep in broad daylight, and rather like the light.

* I have tried several atomic clocks that set using a radio signal from Boulder, Colorado. Only two of them were able to find any signal in my location -this RCR-2 and one other higher priced wall clock. The RCR-2 has a separate antenna for the clock setting signal, which can be hung off the back of the radio, or placed separately within the 3 foot range of the attaching wire. The cheaper atomic setting clocks that I have tried, $20 or less, have never worked for me. The RCR-2 still won't work for everyone, depending on signal strength, but it's good enough for me, and better than most.

* I have no comments on audio or speaker quality I am half deaf, and only listen to AM Talk Radio and Alarm Buzzes ;). The RCR-2 handles these two just fine, so far as I can tell.

* Unlike both the GE SuperRadio and CCRadio, the RCR-2 does not take a big heavy set of D cell batteries. So I suspect when I lose electric power, I won't be listening to the RCR-2 for long. It's no emergency radio. The backup power (internal capacitor) did last the couple of minutes it took me to move the radio between locations, as I tried out the atomic time setting reception. It kept time while unplugged, with the display light off, but the seconds still counting.

* And the RCR-2 is no DX long distance radio tuner. While the AM frontend seems to be quality, you don't get the fine tuning and antenna options required for DX'ing.

* The RCR-2 doesn't have the Weather channel that my CCRadio has -not that I care.

* The RCR-2 has no bass or treble controls just a volume control. Fine by me.

* The Nap function is the first I've seen of such that I will likely use. Just push the Nap button once for each 10 minutes you want. The display shows 10, 20, ... 120, OFF in sequence, for 10 to 120 minutes of nap time, and OFF. The only minor annoyance is that you have to push the button the remainder of the 12 times to turn it back OFF, but in normal usage, one doesn't need to do that often.

I used to have an Emerson CKS2237 Dual Alarm Clock Radio (Silver) (it was a "smartset" that was supposed to be smart enough to "set itself"). After the new DST rules came into effect, the Emerson lost its smart and no longer set itself properly (it was not atomic as many had thought it was). I then found and purchased the Sangean RCR-2. The clock itself was excellent with the one exception that it was nearly impossible to read the clock at night (and also during the day at certain angles). I opted to return the clock and wait for the Sangean RCR-22 to come out.

Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio

I waited for about 3 months for the RCR-22 to come out. It was really worth the wait. The RCR-22 is an excellent upgrade over the RCR-2. In addition to the features of the RCR-2, below are some of the upgrades that the RCR-22 offers over the RCR-2:

The display screen for the RCR-22 has a dark blue background with white text. It makes for a very easy read from a wide variety of angles (unlike the RCR-2).

The display screen for the RCR-22 has an adjustable display knob to make the background screen lighter or darker (the RCR-2 was lacking this).

The RCR-22 has a wider display screen than the RCR-2 (this keeps the clutter down when trying to read from a distance and at night).

The RCR-22 has aux input so that you can connect your mp3 or CD player.

The RCR-22 has a super capacitor that provides memory and alarm memories for up to 1 hour during power disruptions (the RCR-2 also provided a similar type of protection, however, Sangean never made a claim as to the length of memory time that it had).

The RCR-22 appears to have better atomic reception and better AM/FM radio reception than the RCR-2.

In appearance, the RCR-22 looks much cooler than the RCR-2.

Although I gave the RCR-2 3 stars, I give the RCR-22 a full 5 stars.

I really like this alarmclock a lot! It got the highest rating for alarmclocks by the Dutch Consumer organisation (Consumentenbond) in 2005. So on this score i bought it because my old alarmclock had gotten a bit 'shifty' on me. And i must say i like it a lot. I think it is 'pretty' as far as alarmclocks can be called pretty. It sounds really good for such a small box. I actually like the display, despite other people calling it awful. Sure when i'm standing up next to my bed it becomes unreadable but when i'm lying down in bed on either side it is very clear. The dial has a warm yellow glow and the numbers are black and very clear.

It has a bunch of features, to much to name them all but for example: I can set the alarm for any time, any day of the week and any station that i want. It's time setting and keeping is radio controlled, so it always keeps perfect time, summer and winter. Reception on FM or AM is very clear and free of noise and distortion. The sound is clear and rich actually just plain good, even with classical music :-) Sofar i would call it the best alarmclock i've ever owned or heard before. I give it 5 stars!

You will definately need the manual to learn this alarm clock. Setting the alarm without reading the manual would have been more difficult. I could not get the alarm to set to the station I wanted, until I figured it out by holding the (alarm 1 or alarm 2) button just like setting a pre-set station button.

I will agree with others about the display. It does fade if your not looking directly at it.

Here's the caution for deep sleepers. If you are like me and use the snooze button until you have to get up; beware, the alarm automatically turns off after 1 hour. I was late for work twice in the same week the week after I received the alarm clock. I've adjusted the time the alarm goes off, as well made the adjustment myself. Perhaps this is a good thing. I'm not waiting until the last minute to get up.

The sound quality is good. AM reception is impressive, and clear. FM music quality is good as well.

It took a couple hours initally for the time to set. Overall, I am very satisfied, even after being late for work twice.

Model number CFD-RG880CP. As far as I can tell, this is basically the CFDG700CP, but with USB. The manual is copyright dated 2008.

I got the box so I could play from USB and use audio input from laptop. After a short learning curve, I find this box sounds very nice at lower and mid volume levels and the remote controls most everything, except some setup options. My best trance mp3 at 320vbr cannot be turned above about 82 of 100 on volume because there the bass just doesn't sound right.

Once I rewire the battery input, I can directly connect to a 12-Volt marine battery and play on the beach all day and night ;-)

I did get the demo mode turned off by following the directions and it stays off.

I would like for the bass to bump without the LED lights on, but cannot figure out how to turn them off without turning off the bass.

I had previously tried the BOSE Soundlink and this box reproduces better sound at Soundlink's volume levels for half the price and is much more versatile although kinda large.

GE 75500 Spacemaker 7" LCD AM/FM DVD/CD Player with Weather Band and Remote

GE 75500 Spacemaker 7' LCD AM/FM DVD/CD Player with Weather Band and RemoteThis under-counter AM/FM/7" Color TV with DVD player is nice looking, but the power pack simply died within a month of very light use. Finding a replacement power pack was impossible it just is not sold seperately. Also, GE sold this division, so warrantee repair/replacement was nothing but a run-around. These are not made any longer just fyi everybody! I bought a second one just to get the power pack, and put the unit and remote up for auction as "partially complete missing power pack". Better than having holes in my cabinetry! When it works, it's a very cool unit. Unit gets 5 stars, power pack gets 1 star. 3 Stars average!

Great idea and a good looking unit.

Lasted 5 weeks Sent to repair facility Called customer service 6 weeks later. They couldn't find a replacement and offered a buy back.

Total elapsed time so far is 6 months. No check, no TV.

Called them They are in the process of issuing a check. Don't know when the check will be sent.

If you buy, make sure you keep the purchase receipt and all documentation. "Keep the original box" and all paperwork that comes with the unit.

This little unit is awesome. It was VERY simple to install, and even with my toddlers running around I was able to install it in under 15 min. I love the fact that the bolting is flat in the cabinet, so the cabinet is still fully functional. The remote has a magnet, which is awesome, because I can just stick it to my fridge, and never have an issue when it comes to finding the remote. I have owned this unit for about 8 months now, and it has worked like a charm. The unit is built VERY WELL. It makes my kitchen look that much better, and gets comments from all my guest. I would highly suggest investing in one! =)

I wish I knew then what I know now, but reading these reviews are the same issue I am having. I got a couple of years out of my unit, but then the power supply went bad. NO ONE SELLS THIS ITEM!!! I am now going to have to get another unit, probably more compatible with iPod/iPad. This started good, but ended badly. :(

I bought this product in November for a Christmas gift. The radio/cd player works great the only problem is unless you are planning on hooking it up to satelite or cable don't buy it. It does not have a digital tuner even thought it has an lcd screen it's still got an analog tuner. I paid way too much for a cd/radio since the person I gave the gift to doesn't have cable and it's not very realistic to use the convertor box with a under the cabinet tv. I am not sure if notification of it being an analog tuner isn't applicable since it's a refurbished unit. But I know As of March 1, 2007, all television receivers shipped in interstate commerce or imported into the United States must contain a digital tuner. In addition, effective May 25, 2007, the Commission required sellers of television receiving equipment that does not include a digital tuner to disclose at the point-of-sale that such devices include only an analog tuner, and therefore will require a digital-to-analog converter box to receive over-the-air broadcast television after the transition date. Retailers must inform consumers by prominently displaying the following text if they are selling TV equipment with only an analog tuner:

It may not be applicable since it's refurbished.

Purchased this product in conjunction with a Samsung Nexus 50. It allows me to take the small tuner module to record on the Nexus or to work on this dock with my XM-ready Yamaha home theater receiver. Turns out I didn't even need to mount the antenna in a window or outside facing South. It works with a decent signal level located inside a cabinet on the south wall of my house, picking up sufficient signal levels through the cabinet and the outside wall of my house!!! I just used the tuner display of signal strength and moved it around till I found a good signal, avoiding the need to buy an extention cable, drilling a hole through the wall and mounting it outside.

This product worked as promised. It plugged directly into my reciever. Displayed all of the relevent information. It got excellent reception. No need to place the antenna in the window.

I like the Mini-Tuner. I was using a after market radio and Audiovox XMD1000 units for XM Radio. Not happy with the after market radio. So, I pulled it and went back to the OEM radio and added the CommanderMT and Mini-tuner kit. This gives me the freedom to pull the chip and take it in the house and use it in the XM Ready Stereo. WHAT A WONDERFUL SYSTEM. Sure, you can use a XM Receiver in a boom box, but that's like listening to AM Ready when you have an iPOD... GET A XM-READY STEREO and LISTEN to XM the way it was meant to be heard -in the house on a great system ALL THE TIME !!! The CNP2000 Mini-Tuner Home Dock and Car Dock system is a BRILLIANT IDEA !! The old clock radio finally died and my husband and I thought it would be nice to have a CD player in the bedroom to listen to audio books in bed now and then (yes, I know, but it depends on the book!!). We've found the sound quality on such an inexpensive item to be extremely good, it's easy to tune the radio in and we like the huge time display I can even see it without my glasses at night!! So far, it's awakened us at our ridiculously early get up time during the week without fail. No complaints very happy with this clock/radio/CD player.

I read the positive reviews on this Sony so I thought I would buy it for my 18 year old daughter who is going off to college in about a month. While this Sony does sound good and has a decent alarm, CD player, and MP3 input, the radio is not only analog, but the dial is off to the side is very tiny. It also has no battery backup!!! If listening to the radio and tuning in stations is not important to you I say go ahead and buy this clock radio. I expected that the radio part of this clock radio would have been much easier to both see and use for the price.

This product has really been a great asset to my bedroom. The controls are easy to use and I can receive most of my favorite radio stations. This clock/radio/cd player allows you to select specific tracks and setting the alarm is very simple. You can wake up to your favorite track, radio station, or the buzzer. The only thing I may not like about this product is the fact that the buzzer has a low pitch sound, but it increases in intervals. Specifically, the alarm sounds in five seconds and then gradually goes to three, and finally every second. The product also allows you to adjust the brightness of the clock in three settings. Overall, I'm happy with this product.

The cd player skips at the least bump or vibration, it's much larger that it looks in the picture, much larger than it needs to be and the multifunction switches are trouble. And last but certainly not least, Sony has set a new low in alarm clock technology...where every other manufacturer in the world has a battery backup in case of a power outage...the Sony Dream Machine does not! I guess they figure if there is a blip in the power you should just go on "Dreaming". Oh and by the way, make sure you have the instruction manual handy, once the power goes back on you'll need it to go through the process of resetting everything. If you're looking for a really good and less expensive radio/cd player alarm, check out the RCA RP5600.

I actually bought this at a flea market for a much lower cost for a quick clock to put in the daycare I was working at at the time. Wow... The sound was good & I was able to play sleep time music for the kids at nap time. I have since brought this clock radio home & have been using it to wake up with. I love that it has dual alarms so that I can set mine to wake me when I need to get up & my husband has his time to get up. The only downfall on that is I like to wake with music or radio but my hubby needs a loud alarm feature so I have to change it after I get up but other than that this is a very nice clock radio. I love that the snooze button is large enough so I won't hit the wrong button and turn it off instead. This alarm clock is very easy to set & I would recommend it for anyone.

Emerson CKS1702 SmartSet Alarm Clock Radio

Emerson CKS1702 SmartSet Alarm Clock Radio
  • SmartSet single alarm AM/FM clock radio with battery backup
  • Automatically adjusts for Daylight Savings Time and Leap Year
  • Sure Alarm battery back-up activates the alarms even if the power is out
  • Easy-to-read 0.9-inch green LED display
  • Choice of 3 alarm modes: every day, weekends only and weekdays only

This thing is pretty nice because if the power goes out it'll automatically reset to the correct time (either the one set at the factory or the one that you've tweaked, if the factory preset was a bit off). It's not atomic, but it's the next best thing. The radio comes in pretty good too, depending on how you have the antenna positioned (the FM antenna is built into the power cable, and the AM antenna is an iron rod built into the case). It keeps the time when the power is out by way of a small lithium "button" battery. The instructions say that, depending on how long it was on the shelf at the store, the battery could last up to 5 years and that when it does get low a light will flash in the bottom-right corner to alert you. It can even be set to awake you at different times set by you on weekdays or weekends, although the process to do this is a bit convoluted, but if you read the instructions carefully it's easy enough. You can set the alarm to wake you up by way of the radio, or a beeping noise. The beep should awaken even the heaviest of sleepers (after all, it wakes me up). The instructions say that the beeping will rise in volume until you press the alarm button to reset it until the same time next day, or until you press the snooze button to make it sound again in 8 or 9 minutes (can't remember the exact number). Just make sure you don't press the snooze button 7 times or it will NOT sound again until the next day! So keep track of how many times you push the snooze button, get up the first time or risk oversleeping. Overall, this is a very nice, affordable alarm clock. I must also say that the instructions are very informative and easy to understand.

I want an alarm clock that's easy to read, change the wake up time and find the snooze. I don't need any bells and whistles and this does everything that I need just right. It's easy to see and the buttons are so easy to use that I change the wake up time after the lights are out and I'm laying in bed. My wife purchased one that is very noisy so I've tossed that one out. I have another much older one but it's hard to read.

I purchased this clock based on its good reviews. While it was very easy to set up (great that it sets the time itself), the "radio" function on the alarm would never come on. The buzzer worked, but we don't like waking to a buzzer. I returned it and requested another one, figuring the first was just defective. The second one turned out to be dysfunctional as well. The "radio" alarm did work on this one -sometimes. It did not always come on when set (even at the same time/settings every weekday). I'm not going to try a third...call me silly, but I kind of expect an alarm clock to wake me up!

I ordered 2 of the same clock. One seems to be working fine and the other failed from the start. The automatic time set feature did not work, was off by several hours and minutes. The time zone button didn't work and neither did the alarm button (allows one to set the alarm). I am returning it for an exchange.

The one that functions properly is a nice little clock. The main reason I purchased was for the ability to set to only alarm during the week or weekends. This is great for my kids that sometimes forget to switch on the alarm Sunday nights.

Hopefully this was a fluke and there is nothing wrong with the next unit.

**UPDATE**

Received the replacement unit and the auto time set feature does NOT work properly. Gets everything but the minutes correct. It's off by 7 minutes. These clocks are JUNK. Don't waste your time or money. I am actually going to keep this unit and just manually adjust the time rather than spend the time to pack the piece of crap back up and run another one to the post office.

I must admit I do like the compact style, and the auto set function of this clock. However, when going to set the alarm, you cannot adjust the time by minutes/hours, instead you have to cycle forwards or backwards through the 24 hour time span to get to the desired time you wish to set it for. This can be frustrating if you have a schedule that changes constantly requiring you to set your alarm for crazy odd hours all of the time.

If you like a lot of bass in your music, you are going to like this product, in my opinion it sounds great. As for the connectivity, it works pretty good for me as well, however, I have not really made full use of the blue pin technology that the unit comes with. But it seems to be working OK as far as I have tested it.

This design is very high tech, and when the lights are dimmed, the blue glow looks awesome. This unit can be powered by 8 'D' size batteries, so it can be taken on picnics, or just outdoors when hanging out with friends.

iLUV is a brand that is produced by jWIN, so if you make the purchase, I recommend that as soon as get it that you test it fully, to make sure that it is working properly, and that you are satisfied with the quality.

Bought this for a birthday present. Shipped very fast from Universal Mania. no damage to box or packaging. In fact it was in the original unopened manufactures box that was boxed again inside Universal Mania's box. So damage from shipping was not the issue.

This was DOA from the factory. Tried it with AC and batteries, nothing, no lights, no hum, nada, zip, zero, a pile of pretty plastic. iLuv quality control is non-existent. The only good news is the RMA was reasonably painless. One email to Universal Mania and I had an RMA # within hours. Once they received it, I waited a couple of days for them to process it and sent another email requesting status. Again the reply was the same day and a few days later received confirmation from Amazon of the credit to my account.
