Great product. Indestructable clamshell close, lightweight, and small for travel, a new battery lasts for a year or two, loud alarm, big numbers and nighttime visibility, snooze seems to keep working no matter how many times you hit it, am and fm work fine. I've bought 6 of these in the past, given most of them away to guests who used them and really liked them, and logged on again today to buy a few more. I've bought dozens of different small travel alarm clocks over the past 30 years (which I also use for my main home alarm clock--I don't like switching when I travel), and this is by far the best ever. I'm buying more so that I don't ever run out--I worry they'll quit making it someday. Never have known any of them to miss an alarm, in spite of that other review to the contrary.

We woke up late two days in a row because of this alarm clock. In disbelief, the third day we woke up early and stared at the alarm clock as it breezed through the set alarm-time without making a sound, or registering that it had missed the alarm time.

To add insult to injury, the clock misses alarms only when we set the alarm for intervals longer than an hour. A two-minute to one-hour alarm test works fine. When we set it for longer intervals, it won't ring. All indicators appear to be correct (bell sign if using the radio, z sign if using the buzzer, pm indicator where appropriate). It just doesn't ring.

The radio works fine, the clock works fine, the night light works fine. But what's the point, if the alarm won't work? This item goes back to the store.

Not wanting to drain my iPhone batteries when out of town and needing an alarm to wake me the next morning, I thought this travel alarm could be a handy alternative.

Nope.

Not sure what they were thinking when they designed this, but you can't use the radio and the alarm at the same time, which is the pits if you like to fall asleep listening to music. And worse, the alarm is not reliable. I've had several instances now where it doesn't go off at the appointed time. Yes, I checked to make sure I was setting AM instead of PM, but to no avail. It's not rocket science you know, and I have managed more complicated things (like raising teenage boys), yet this alludes me. I'm going to write it off as a manufacturing flaw, and not my inability to conquer a little box with an LED display.

This is not Timex's finest hour. Pun intended.

I bought this as a travel clock radio. However, when you go to bed at night you cannot have the radio on if you wish to set the alarm! It has one sliding switch which operates both the radio and alarm. While the radio works okay for such a small item and the alarm seems dependable, it is not that useful if you cannot use both together.

While the Eton FR360 does many things, I bought this radio for 3 basic functions, all relating to emergency use.

1. Multiple power sources, notably solar cells and hand crank in addition to dry cells.

2. Weather radio, AM/FM as a necessary secondary.

3. Cell phone charger (via USB).

The ability to power this radio from multiple sources is good in theory but weak in practice. To maintain a battery charge sufficient to run the radio requires several minutes of cranking every 15 minutes. The solar cell's rate of charge cannot keep up with the radio's rate of discharge. This means that the radio will still require occasional cranking even if sitting in full sun. Given the effect that low charge has on radio function (more on this later) it's just easier to keep a set of spare batteries on hand. With the shelf life of modern alkaline batteries this is really the best option. It's not like this unit is ruggedized for go anywhere operation so don't imagine yourself riding out a hurricane in a waterlogged foxhole madly cranking so you can hear the weather report.

Radio reception is also less than what I expected of a $50 unit. Weather radio is intelligible. I don't expect great performance will make the voice sound any less robotic. I find there are two things that affect the radio performance. Fully extending the short telescopic antenna is a must for FM reception and battery power must be high. Operating from alkaline cells provides okay reception but with no power meter on the rechargeable battery (charged from the solar cells or hand crank) reception deteriorates with the battery charge without any indication. Not what you want in an emergency radio.

The most disappointing feature is the USB cell phone charger. The USB port derives its power from the crank only, not the batteries. This means that anything plugged into the USB port only charges as long as the crank is being turned. If you have a smartphone that takes several minutes to boot from a dead state then any appreciable charge that can be built up is expended before the phone is ready to use. I actually tossed an old Moto RAZR in with the FR360 because it boots fairly quickly, sips power and will provide 911 service without a contract.

While this review seems to cast the FR360 in a negative light consider that a few spare batteries resolve the major complaints and the solar cells and crank are really there for last resort use. (Seriously, who would crank or look for a sunny spot if they could just as easily duct tape three extra AAA cells to the back of the radio?) The radio isn't great but it's good enough for the intended purpose. The USB charge port is a bit of a disappointment but when all else fails, it's there. Is the FR360 worth $50? Maybe. It's a jack of all trades and when it's go time having only one thing to grab instead of three will probably be its greatest asset.

I bought this radio for motorcycle camping because of its compact size, multiple power sources, and weather radio capability. I've been using it daily now for over a month and am not at all disappointed. Signal reception is somewhat weak on the Eton compared to the radio in my vehicle as distance from the transmitter increases, but this is the only issue I've found in over a month of use and is far from intolerable. As an added surprise/bonus, the Eton has a scan function built into the tuner. The manual tuning knob is quite slow at tuning up and down the scale, but the "MIN/DOWN" and "HR/UP" buttons digitally scan up and down the scale quickly. This is a feature that I don't remember seeing in the product descriptions. As far as durability goes, my daughter knocked our radio off of our kitchen table and it bounced off of our hardwood floor. This happened the very next day after I received the Eton. I was certain there would be damage of some sort, but I looked closely at the exterior and could not detect where the impact had occurred on the case. I shook the unit and could not hear anything rattling inside. Finally, I checked all functions and found nothing wrong. This little radio is durable, but I asked my daughter not to perform any more destructing testing. Lastly, the radio does not ship with its own a/c adapter. This struck me as a little questionable, given the price of the unit. But I looked at all of the a/c adapters I already own and found that my Remington trimmer adapter was perfect (3.6 VDC, 100 mA output) for a full charge of the nimh battery pack in lieu of waiting for the sun to top it off. If you've been considering purchasing this radio, I readily recommend it. Keep in mind that the reception issue has a great deal to do with your location.

Overall, it's not a bad radio for the money, however, the reciever is not very sensitive. I believe the main reason for this is the short antenna. It loses signal easily if it can get a decent signal at all. I have to carry a wire to clip on to this very inadequate antenna in order to get reliable reception. If you live in the city, I doubt you will have any trouble but if your going camping you will have trouble.

We live in Central New Jersey and as of late we have been having a lot of power problems, generally weather related. I wanted to get something that would allow us a flash light, radio, and cell phone charger. I saw this product come up on Gold Box and figured what the heck...it seems to do what I need and I can hand crank it to power up/charge my devices...plus get some light and listen to the radio/weather reports.

I can now say it failed at every level....

The radio reception was USELESS unless we took it outside and touched the antenna to a back yard aluminum umbrella.

The hand crank charging for the cell phones made my cell phone even weaker then it was when I started...it felt as though the cranking was draining the battery.

The only good thing was the little LED flash light.....

That's it... I really wanted to like this but I am disappointed.

Do not buy this if you want a radio. The tuner is so poor it can't clearly pick up 50K watt stations from 30 miles away. I exchanged the first unit since I thought the tuner was defective. Its replacement arrived today and it's just as bad. The smaller Etons, with analog tuner, work much better. The flashlight function does work well, but I can get self-powered LED flashight at the dollar store.

I would not recommend this IPOD. The slightest touch will cancel your song and with the one I bought the ear bud connection was crap, kept shorting out. I returned and bought the IPOD classic. My husband has had the classic for years and never had any problems.

My IPOD would not charge after three months of use. It seems that I left it on and completely drained the battery. I took it to the Apple Store and they fixed it very quickly. It needed to be reset before it could charge. (press on and + buttons at the same time for a few seconds)

Overall, it is better than expected. I was a little worried after reading some reviews about the problems with the touch screen interface, but I have not had any problems. I like the small size and the clip.

The screen went black after a year and and a half. Not a good product to buy. Avoid Apple at all costs. After multiple iphones and ipods and ipads I can safely say these products are made to look good for about half and hour and then dissolve in your hands. I've had m&ms last longer than these apple products.

I love to listen to music while I workout, and I bet I'm not the only person that does. Before I received the new Nano 6G, I used my iTouch 4G to listen to music and found it annoying how bulky it was, but I was happy that I had a reliable music source. Now that I've got the new Nano 6G, I can happily say that I'm far more impressed then I thought I'd be.

Pros:

ClipCorrect me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that the iPod Nano 5G had a clip on it, which seemed very annoying. Now that the new Nano has a clip, I run with it without having to hold it in my hands! It's was a very smart thing that Apple incorporated on the Nano.

SizeI've noticed that a lot of review sites have been saying that the Nano 6G should have been made bigger and is waaaay too small, but I heavily enjoy how small it is. It's not as bulky as the iTouch or iPhone and is a perfect size.

TouchscreenWhen I found out that the new Nano would have a touchscreen, I was all like, "How on Earth are they going to put a fully functional touchscreen on such a small device???" Well, I found out just weeks ago. The touchscreen is as sensitive as the iTouch.

Music QualityI was astonished at how clear and pristine the music quality is. Sure it's not like the actual singer is singing to you, but it's pretty darn close!

WatchThe new Nano now has a new watch software! Yes, that's right, you can use your Nano as a watch! But how? Well, you spend an extra $20 or sometimes even $80 on a new leather or rubber watch! I usually don't use the Nano as a watch, but I just thought it might interest some of you guys.

Cons:

No WheelThis isn't really a con for me, but it might be for some others. As in all the other Nano's and Shuffle's, the Nano 6G doesn't have the famous white navigational wheel. Some people say it was impossible to navigate around this device, but to me it was as simple as pie.

BackgroundYou can't select which photo you want to pose as your background. Sure Apple implemented some nifty backgrounds for our usage, but I wish you just could. This isn't exactly rapture-news bad, but it's something that I found that the Nano should have.

Well, that's all my pros and cons. I bet some of you readers might be thinking, "Why the heck did he not add to the list of cons that the new nano has no camera or mic?" Well, I didn't for a very specifically reason. It just doesn't seem so darn bad to me if it doesn't have a camera or mic. I mean, use common sense people, it's made for MUSIC. Not VIDEO usage, but MUSIC usage. Would you actually watch a music video on such a small device??? I couldn't.

So, here's my final verdict: The new Nano 6G or 7G (both are almost identical. The only difference is a minor software that Apple is generously offering people with the "old" version to update their Nano) is an wonderful birthday of Christmas gift that people who like MUSIC will like. If you're looking for third-party apps or accessibility to a video/mic, then either buy the iTouch or the 5th Generation Nano.

Gave it four stars because the sound quality is less than stellar... but it is afterall an alarm clock. I have to have it pitch black to sleep which is why this thing is perfect. When I'm awake and need to see the clock I hit the 'dimmer' button on the remote and viola, Light! At night though the little blue light can be completely turned off. This with the remote and sleep function completely sold me. It's small and relatively unnoticeable so it sits on my night stand without being obtrusive. Oh! You can set the volume at a certain level and the alarm at a higher level, for those who have a hard time waking.

This clock radio is fantastic and would be a 5 star product if it wasn't for one major issue: the volume at 1 is too high and 0 is muted or off. This isn't the first clock radio I've had with this problem. My nightstand is about 3 feet from my head, so with this alarm clock on volume 1 it is too loud to sleep. I don't understand how electronics still have these types of issues? There should be more "steps" and levels so that the sound goes from a whisper to a rock concert, but for some reason the manufacturer decided you can either have no music or loud music. NOTE: This is only an issue when docked. If you use the line out you can adjust the volume with the iPod to be pleasing and quiet. However, you will not be docked so it isn't charging and you can't wake up to iPod music only the radio.

As for the positives there are plenty! The front display dims (in steps from bright to dim) or can be completely off for those that like to sleep in the dark. You can have a different volume on the alarm for heavy sleepers. There is a mini-remote control which is a nice feature. It has a battery back-up in case of a power loss. The sound quality is quite nice for the price as well. You can wake up to the radio, ipod, or buzzer. It has a "line-in" for playing devices other then iPods.

It doesn't say, but it is compatible with my original 2G iPhone, it even charges the device when docked. If you don't mind loud music at night then this alarm clock is really fantastic. Too bad there isn't a .5 volume level!

This was a great buy for a college student living in a dorm; based my rating on his expressed reaction. Sound quality is better than you would expect for something this inexpensive; it's a versatile product for using with an iPod and has all the connections you might want. No space hog, it's about the size of a halved cantaloupe. The dimming display on the clock was the clincher for me in pressing the add-to-cart button. Well designed.

I got this as a gift and it's a great way to charge my iPod without having to turn on my computer to plug it in. There's plenty of room to just stick my iPod into the dock; I can leave the skin on it. It took only a couple of hours or so to charge my classic iPod.

The sound quality is all right; if I have the volume up any more than halfway, the sound starts to get pretty shaky, but if it's lower, it sounds all right. The whole device is compact. The light for the clock is a little dim, making it harder to read the time, but overall, I'm very happy with this product.

I got the clock two weeks ago and it has been work fine, i had been looking a long time to find a flip down clock, so when i got it i was exited to have it displayed on my desk, but it can be off by a minute or so at times but it makes up the time in a 24 hour period. Also the placement of the power connector is horrible and ugly sticks out of the back like a sore thumb, for such a nice looking clock its not right. would have been much better if it plugged in like every other electronic device discreetly, and it started to make some squeaky noise. Stay tuned as I will update this review shortly with more technical details to follow. I took a chance and ordered this Degen DE1125 from overseas ($78.99 shipped by registered airmail) despite some poor reviews that I have seen recently, but my unit is just fine and once again the overall quality control of electronics production in Chinese radio factories looms its ugly head! My unit is the Degen brand and not the Kaito version so it has sw capability instead of the USA weather band channels. It is excellent on the fm and good on sw bands despite relatively low sensitivity ratings compared to several other Kaito and Degen radios. To boot the unit is very well made and extremely small and pocketable and just what I was looking for by the way. I like it much better than the Sangean DT-200V and DT-400W units and it can even pick up routine weather broadcasts on my local am government sponsored emergency preparedness station. It does need a tone control that is certainly sorely lacking, but other than that I have no great complaints at this point, except perhaps for a more precise frequency control in smaller increment steps (see further below). The AGC (automatic gain control) does oscillate so that the signal strength fluctuates quite a bit for weak am stations as noted by other internet reviewers, but the stronger sw stations come in just fine as do all fm stations that I have listened to. I am very pleased overall with this radio/MP3 player, especially at this asking price!

UPDATE: November 18, 2009:

PROS:

1) Very fine quality MP3 player (comes with two songs, one by the late and great Karen Carpenter (Its yesterday once more) and another classic, the Hotel California). Both are excellent for demonstrating the MP3 capabilities available on this system.

2) Good quality voice recorder/microphone system with ability to record directly off the air (better at lower speaker volume).

3) Tuning is through either the very fine tuning knob or using the Auto+/Autokeys on the keyboard so it is a much improved system (compared to the Kaito KA1123 or the Degen DE15 units).

4) There is excellent sensitivity for fm with very good selectivity

5) Fair to good sw sensitivity and good selectivity

6) Fair am sensitivity and good selectivity

7) High quality MP3 player with 2 GB of onboard mempry available.

8) Good quality ATS (Automatic tuning storage) preset capability on all bands with 255 presets available (adjusted using the Auto +/keys). These presets are easy to play back too using easy to locate keys (can be used to either advance or backtrack frequencies) on the right hand side of the unit.

9) There is a very detailed and highly readable, quality LCD screen with a (green) high quality backlight.

10) The LCD screen details are different for the "off" position versus each of the three modes of operation (as listed under 1) below under Cons). The clock can be displayed in all possible screen displays and so it is very easy to set accurately.

11) There is a very nice on-screen digital signal strength meter that is displayed whenever the digital volume levels are adjusted.

12) It has a very long lasting and very flat rectangular battery (Lithium-Ion: Nokia cell phone type). The battery is charged using a USB to unit cable (provided) that goes directly to a PC (with automatic charging capability). The same USB cable is also used for quickly downloading songs from a PC.

13) It is a very small and pocketable, very nice looking unit with a high quality build (with a black rubbery surface with a nice feel). It has a nice support stand that opens up from the back and exposes more of the speaker to the air as well (see below).

14) The unit also has an extendable (nonrotating) vertical antenna about 15 inches in length that is good for fm and sw signal detection.

15) There is also a lock slide switch to keep all controls fixed when needed.

16) It also has a very good sounding speaker.

17) The printed manual is in both Chinese as well as in English and is not very hard to understand.

CONS:

1) There is no tone control for any of the three basic modes (am/fm/sw radio, MP3 player and voice and off the air recorder).

2) The tuning capability is fixed and does not have adjustable frequency step controls.

3) The radio senitivity is best only for listening to major stations, except for the fm operating mode and to a lesser extent sw. I think the Kaito version with all USA weatherband channels may prove to be a better buy overall if the sensitivity for these is adequate. There is some hiss to be heard in the background on am and on the voice recorder.

4) It has a lone bandwidth and no DX/local attenuator, but can register fm stereo through the earphones. It does not have an external antenna jack either.

UPDATE: November 19, 2009:

Apparently the weatherband reception option instead of sw reception (2.3 ~23 MHz) has been dropped by Kaito (Degen) since it no longer appears listed on the Amazon website (it was listed there until very recently however!). Even today on their own website it is still listed as the Kaito KA800 with am/fm and weatherband reception capabilities and an orange backlight!

Like another reviewer (Ann) I bought this little radio by mail order inspite of other negative reviews elsewhere on the internet. I got mine from a seller in Vancouver, Canada. Overall I am very pleased with this radio. I think the fit and finish is very nice and FM reception is excellent even with the aerial antenna fully down. AM reception is also quite good and at night I easily receive stations for Los Angeles and the SF bay area. On SW the performance matches my older Panasonic RF-2900 which is just fine. Certainly a real SW enthusiast won't use this as their only radio, but the portability and versatility of this little radio is really pleasing. I love the size, features and the USB charging method. I've loaded lots of MP3 songs into the 2GB of FLASH (it appears as standard "disk drive" on your PC) and it charged while I did that! The English owners manual is adequate and the radio is easy to operate. I haven't used the headphones since I already had a decent set. The MP3's sound fine to me with reasonably rich sound, though it would have been nice to have a tone control or EQ settings to select from. I also like the green LED backlight. The display is easy to read in the dark. Also, I think this model must be preferable to the older DE-1123 because that model doesn't have the jog control which works great! Don't be afraid to buy one of these. You'll be very pleased, especially for the money spent.

Good build quality. I'm technically challenged, so after a few evenings of learning MP3 download basics, I'm happy with this versatile product. 24+ hours of music, downloaded so far. Sound quality is decent. Tons of great features in a tiny package. I ordered mine from Hong Kong...mine takes 3AAA batteries (rechargables that arrived with the unit, seem faulty, so I switched to standard alkaline for now). Packaging was for 1123 model with 2GB of storage. My only dislike so far, is that the MP3 controls are a bit "delayed". Radio reception on FM is excellent, AM fair, and SW good. Not quite perfect, but definitely recommended. I don't think there's another product that offers all these features, in a quality pocket sized product, on the market.

I have been using the product for about a week.

There is no auto-record functionality, which is a bit disappointing to me. I was hoping to be able to set it to record certain AM shows everyday of the work week. But I have to make sure to turn it on every morning before I leave for work. I do that so that I can ensure it records while being able to leave it at home and not have to carry it around with me (potentially getting it stolen or lost). I am a teacher, so I cant just leave it lying around on my desk, and some of the schools I am in get very poor AM reception. So, all in all, I find it best to leave it at home and have it record a certain station all day. Of course, it pretty much saps the battery and records a bunch of stuff I dont want, but I still get what I want eventually (and I have gotten in the habit of recharging it everyday).

It would be much nicer to have the auto record ability, much like my DVRs. That took it from a sure-fire 4 star to a 3 star product, imo. If it would have that functionality, and it was easy to use, and reliable, maybe even a 5 star product.

Other than that, nice product. I like that it has a "lock" button, good speaker (for listening w/o headphones), it's designed so you have to "double-check" before deleting a file, and you can adjust the auto-tuning so that you can most likely pick up all stations (see manual for how to do that).

I enjoy this radio/player very much. It has great reception and gets stations my larger radios can't. I had some questions and the people at Kaito Sales were very helpful. I am in Florida and so being in Eastern time, I was still able to speak with them after 6PM when I got home from work, since they are in California on Pacific time. Lee was extremely helpful.

I look forward to seeing any new products they may offer in the future.

When I bought this item I was impressed with all it could do, for the purchase price. When I received it I found the user info very unfriendly and the instructions for use sparse. Then it got worse it played only 1 out of 4 CD's without skipping. I returned the unit for a refund and bought a more expensive unit, different brand.

I wanted a radio alarm clock that would play MP3 CD's. I think Bose is the only one out there at this time. Anyway, the sound clarity of this unit isn't very good over the speakers. Headset it's not to bad. There is a couple things I don't like about it is that the "Sleep" function does not work with the CD player.... You can only use the sleep function with the radio, and the amount of light it puts out. It's like having a night light in your room. Also you can't put regular batteries in the cd player and have it docked because the dock will try and recharge the batteries!

I bought this for my daughter, and it seems to do the job. The controls are a bit confusing, and the LCD is only visible at a particularly small angle, so using this as a clock radio is a joke. Given the cost, however, it was worth it and the sound quality is acceptible for her.
