I had some goals in mind when I purchased the Tecsun PL-360: I was looking for an easy to use, very portable, AM/FM/Shortwave radio for under a hundred dollars, that was not demanding on batteries and provided decent reception.

So, here is what I found when the PL-360 went to work:

The first thing I did with it, out of the box, was to scan the SW band with ETM. The Easy Tuning Mode button locates audible stations and then lets you flip through them with the tuning dial. This feature can be run at any time to update your location or add to the list with antenna changes. The Tecsun scanned the SW band indoors with just the whip antenna and locked onto 38 stations. 2300-21950khz continuous. Later, with the addition of an outdoor antenna, the PL-360 (during evening hours) using ETM, scanned and locked on to over 135 shortwave stations. Not bad and I felt that met my expectations for SW. I am not real fond of the clip-on antenna rigging. But, it will add to the ETM station count. ( Note: I got to my outdoor antenna by soldering a alligator clip to the bitter end of the supplied clip-on antenna wire. I am sure you are on your own when you do this since it is outside the design and not in the user guide.)

When the PL-360 locks on it is discriminating and holds the station well. Little to no bleed over or fade beyond the nature of the band.

AM/FM radio and features: Just fine & handy too. Stereo radio sound is surprisingly decent with my Skull Candy headphones. I also tried three other types of headsets; over ear and soft inserts with differing results. Basically, better phones improve sound. You get about what you would expect from the small onboard speaker.

Features are easy to access. Faceplate buttons are small but snappy and clean with room to disallow "fat finger." There is not so much clutter that it is confusing. Noted in one review was the tuning knob as being crisp and solid with good indexing. I agree with that. The buttons support a "short press," and "long press" action to manipulate features.

The little AM antenna that fixes to the body and makes it look like a TNT igniter is okay. In fact, it is directional. There is a signal strength indicator on the LCD and that responds clearly to movement of the bar antenna.

Holding the radio in the left hand allows my wrap around fingers access to the tuning knob and volume knob. In the right hand the thumb is in charge. LCD Display and button markings are easy to read at arms reach as if holding a book. The LCD screen lights when buttons or knobs are moved and turns down with inactivity.

Scan and memory features are handy. Very briefly: You scan using the VF button and the radio holds a station for a few seconds then moves on. You can use the tuning knob to stop the scan and fine tune. Also, there is an up and down button feature in the four button Band selector and Auto Tuning Storage section that makes gross moves from band to band while the LCD provides a quick band reference as you troll. The band you are on flashes for about two seconds. (It took me a while to catch this indication. Two seconds is kind of quick. So, you have to be looking for this.) So, if you like 31m, you just push the up or down button until 31m shows in the upper right corner of the LCD. You can then scroll through the band. A press of the memory button drives a station you like to one of the memory sets for later use by the VM button as a preset.

The Alarm (wake up) mode is easy to use and set. The auto off timer has a surprisingly large selection of time choices. A blinking sleep icon flashes in the upper left corner of the LCD when setting this feature. Also, the LCD shows ambient temperature. This is listed in Fahrenheit when North American step settings are selected for AM.

I did purchase NMH rechargeable batteries to use in the radio. The PL-360 needs to be told it has NMH batteries installed. I found the setup for this easy and the Intelligent Charging Feature handy. So far, the radio does not appear to be a power consumption hog.

Overall, the PL-360 is a nice surprise. I feel the radio met all the goals I had in mind and provided some very nice extras that made it well worth the price paid. Also, the learning curve is not too bad and even the user guide is compact as well as straight forward.

This is an interesting packaging of the new DSP radios coming out of China. Don't expect miracles out of the very small rotating am/lw antenna or tiny speaker, but if you do not need ssb or selectable sideband and want a travel radio with am, fm and shortwave, this may be of interest.

There are multiple tuning and entry options, along with an interesting "seek" function that seems to work better than previous implementations of this idea.

With an external direct or passively coupled loop antenna, the am is on par with my DE1103 on the "wide" setting.

San Francisco and Vancouver BC stations are an easy catch most autumn and winter nights. I've gotten one or two East Coast stations.

Small enough to slip in a big pocket, and it has a mini-usb charging port for the three AA cells. You will need that, as this radio seems to run through NiMh battery charge very fast, at least compared to my DE1103.

Tecsun has several DSP radios utilizing the IC Si373x from Silicon Labs of Austin TX. The AM/FM/SW/LW digital tuning radio is shaped more like a TV remote compared to its other DSP cousins. It doesn't standup easily, nor does it fit in your pocket well. I don't think this design lends itself to any advantage other than putting an antenna on the end of a skinny block.

The unique feature of this radio is the Medium Wave AM radio antenna input, and the supplied external ferrite bar antenna. Testing the AM sensitivity for me is not easy as I live in a high QRM (man-made interference) area of my city, with commercial buildings all around. For me the supplied ferrite bar antenna performed well pulling in stations clearly up to 50 miles away that I know are under 2.5KW. I also tried Tecsun's AN-200 Loop antenna with direct connect to the radio. Not surprisingly a noticeable increase in reception, with late PM full of signals I could not identify in the World Radio Tv Handbook. So with the right antenna, this radios AM reception is very good and allows for experimenting at a reasonable price.

The FM and SW receptions are surprisingly good using the stick antenna. However, I mainly purchased the radio for the MW input as I'm planning a large loop antenna to take to the Eastern Seashore for Trans Atlantic DXing. As one of many Tecsun Ultra Light Radios (URL) with Digital Signal Processing (DSP), there fun, useful, work well, easy to use, light weight, and priced right. I like Tecsun because of their DSP radios, highly recommended.

This radio performs as well as the Tecsun PL-380, and some may prefer the PL-380 because of its more familiar dimensions and features. However, the PL-360 will accept substitute plug-in antennas if the owner cares to create one or more for experimental purposes.

The PL-360 has no keyboard for direct frequency entry, but that's not too big a deal. The radio is solid feeling and has much better sound than I would expect from a small speaker. DSP enhances the listening experience substantially.

Sensitivity and selectivity, especially, are good for a small radio.

Received this rather quickly from Amazon even with free (slow) shipping. I think I ordered on Friday and it arrived on Tuesday. Not bad.

The build quality of the radio is okay. Though, it does not have a robust feel like my Sangean DT-400W which I also bought recently.

Your experience may vary, below are only my opinions:

Here is what I don't like:

1) Silly ferrite external antenna. Surely they could have fit that darn thing into the radio. There is a pouch that comes with the radio, but there is not a place for the ferrite antenna in pouch. I suppose you can stuff it in the belt loop, but it is not really secure. If this external antenna works better than it does, then I would not be picking at it.

2) Can the buttons be any smaller? You almost need to use an magnifier to read the label on the buttons. Overall, the buttons are not very responsive.

3) The instruction booklet is mostly in Chinese so it useless unless you know Chinese. I think there may be English translation of it on the web somewhere.

4) No numerical buttons for frequency selection so there is a lot of thumb exercise.

Here is what I liked:

1) It has a strange shape. Reminds me of an old walky-talky. Easy to hold one handed.

2) The speaker is decent.

3) FM reception is solid while MW and SW is marginal.

4) Uses 3x AA batteries (isn't 3 an odd number???). Can recharge NiMH in the radio. Haven't really tried this feature yet.

The way the radio seats into the speaker dock, it is not a snug fit, could loose power easily.There is no way to scroll channels, you have to keep pushing the up, down button to get to where you want.

Pros:

The dial/knob is NOT for volume or tuning, which is somewhat counterintuitive. Other than that, no flaws.

Overview:

I installed this radio just a few weeks ago. Install was extremely easy. The included template made drilling the 4 holes an exact science. And the height-adjustable legs made the fit perfect and were very simple to place and adjust, and using these the unit should fit under any cabinet setup.

It does look nice, which is important in a kitchen, and we just remodeled ours, so this looks the part.

Functionality is generally very good. Like I mentioned under weaknesses, the knob is used for the timer, which is not how most radios are set up. But we've already gotten over that. Radio is easy to use, including setting the presets and such. Likewise for the TV and weather stations. I haven't had much trouble with reception, but that will depend entirely on your own situation. The CD player is easy to use as well.

And the unit sounds good. For a small sound system, and one that is mounted under a cabinet, which is not the most acoustically perfect area, is sounds good. And the enhanced "MegaBass" and "MegaExpand" features do help quite a bit. I tend to keep them on all of the time.

All-in-all, I am very pleased with this unit.

After reading the other reviews I thought maybe I wouldn't have the reception problems others have mentioned because we live in a suburb of Denver and our kitchen has lots of windows. We tried the radio in several spots and finally found one where the signal seemed clear. However, when I stand in one area of the kitchen not too far from the radio, the reception gets very fuzzy. You have no flexibility with this radio because there is no external antenna.

I listened to several under counter radios in the store (this one, the GE, etc.) and this one has the best sound quality but unfortunately I returned mine because the fuzzy signal when standing in certain spots was too annoying.

If you only listen to CDs, you will be happy with this. But if you want to use it to listen to FM radio, look elsewhere.

This radio has excellent sound quality! I live in a rural area (two hours from the nearest "city"), and I have wonderful FM reception with this radio. The only reception problems I've had have been with the Weather bands -I can't pick any up in my area -and with one AM station. Because the AM antenna is inside the radio, the placement of your radio will determine what stations come in best. In other words, you can't move the antenna to get better AM reception once it's installed.

It took fifteen minutes to install this radio. A template is provided for the screws, so all one needs is a drill for the four screws.

This radio uses buttons instead of a knob for adjusting the volume, and for locating stations. I would prefer knobs (hence my rating of 4 stars.)I would also like to see a scan option for the selection of stations. (If it has this option, I've not found it.)

I can't praise the sound quality of the radio enough. To me, this is the best feature. There are several different options to choose from when deciding on the sound quality. I like this because it allows me to choose one for listening to talk radio, and another for listening to classical. It makes a difference.

Try it! If you aren't pleased with it after a few days, you can always return it.

Back with an update after using this radio for many months. While I still think this is a decent radio, I've become rather irritated with the come-and-go nature of the reception. As the seasons change, so do the stations that I'm able to pick up. (Since it's in a fixed position, it is difficult to tune-in a station that's fuzzy.) This requires constant resetting of the stations that I've preset. Since there isn't a scan button, one must stand there and bump the radio up bit-by-bit until finding a new station. (Call my lazy.) These days, I mostly use the radio for its CD player and the very handy kitchen timer.

I still give this radio a wonderful rating on sound quality, but if I could, I would bump the rating down to 3 stars.

I can't believe what I've read about this unit. This is a piece of junk! I don't normally complain and I'll put up with a lot, but this unit is almost worthless.

Reception is very poor on all bands. I was suspicious right off the bat when even the directions tell you that for optimum reception, you must extend the cord because it is the FM antenna. That's a great design to have the cord laying all over the counter for a space-saving under-the-counter radio!

The tuner appears to be digital, but it is really a poor quality analog. There is no signal rejection whatsoever. As you approach a frequency in an attempt to tune in the station, you can't really tell if you are right on it or not, unless you happen to know the frequency. The stations fade in and out, depending on where you stand in the room!

The mounting template looks like a simple rectangular arrangement for the mounting holes, but it really is a trapezoid, farther apart in the rear than in the front. If you are mounting the unit across two cabinets, you can't use the template anyway.

The CD door wouldn't open. You could hear it trying to move, but it never would open.

The left rear mounting on the unit was defective (stripped) from the factory.

Overall sound quality is tinny at best, with the bass boost having little or no effect.

Save your money and buy a small boom box and set it on top of the frig.

After going through 5 of the ICF-CD543RM models (bad CD mechanisms) Target got one of these and I upgraded. We've had no problems with it, and sound is suprisingly good. We live about 5 miles from downtown and generally our radio reception is good, and have not had issues with bad radio reception like others have. I'm not surprised if you live at the edge of a broadcast area that reception might be poor because (other than placement in your house which is limited), you are not going to use the cord draped around your cabinet hardware to improve reception.

My only complaint is that installation is a little tricky and you should definitely pull the template out of the box first to make sure it's going to work with your cabinets. Anything other than a deep, standard cabinet set-up would make this nearly impossible to install. Use the dimensions of the unit as a rough guide, but the truth is in the template.

I was looking for an alarm clock/charger for my iPhone and finally settled on this one. Partly intrigued by the fact it works in conjunction with an app, I wanted to see how the full package would operate.

It's a little bigger in person than I expected it to be so I might have preferred a smaller device, but that's not a deal breaker. The only other complaint I have is that when the device is working with the app, there's a large button on the top that turns on and emits a rather bright night light that I wish I had the option to turn off. It's not so bright as to keep me awake, but I happen to like a dark room when I sleep, so it's more light than I'm used to. Still, not a deal breaker and I'm thinking about just putting a sticker on top of it or something to dim it down.

The speaker gives out good sound quality, and you can manually control the clock's brightness even to where you can turn the display of completely if you prefer. The app is a nice touch and has some cool features like customizing the music/sounds you sleep and wake-up to, plus about as many alarm options as you want to set.

The buttons on the front are easy to manage and most of the clock's overall management (setting of the time, etc.) is done through the iPhone app, but there are buttons on the back that allow you to manage the clock that way as well.

One thing I was worried about was whether it would work with my iPhone's case on since I've read about other devices that don't fit the phone if you have a case on it. Thankfully this one fits just fine (I have an ifrogz case).

All in all, I'm happy with it.

I wanted an iPod alarm clock and the iA5's "App-enhanced" nature looked good, so I bought it. I wish I hadn't.

Unfortunately, the app is very poor. There are some nice ideas in it, with "sleep cards" and "wake cards" to handle different situations, but the app is so complicated that it is nearly useless. When you're tired and want to go to sleep, you're not likely to want to fumble around an iPod app hunting for the right settings.

As other reviewers have noted, the iA5 is bright, both the clock display (even at its dimmest setting) and the power button. So unless you like sleeping next to a spotlight, stay away. The iPod is in the way when you try to reach for a button. The device looks like it has two speakers, but actually only has one (my fault for not reading the fine print.)

The App-Enhanced Clock Radio is a good idea, but the iA5 is a poor execution of that idea. Hopefully, iHome will redesign this device and re-write the app with user-friendliness in mind.

The iHome iA5 is basically an alarm clock that hooks up with your iPod, iPod Touch or iPhone. What it isn't, first of all, is a radio alarm clock --if you don't have an iPod or iPhone connected to it, the only alarm option is a buzzer, so if you're looking for an iPod/radio alarm clock, this isn't it. However, if you connect an iPod or iPhone, it will let you fall asleep to, and wake up to, whatever track your device is set to. I find this a wonderful function, and don't particularly miss the radio, so in that sense it's a good device.

However, the iA5 has a couple of glaring design mistakes. First of all, the iPod/iPhone connector is a little rectangular block sticking out from the front of the device. As a result, your iPod/iPhone will block the buttons on the device most notably the snooze button. So, when you're waking up and maybe still a bit clumsy, you need to maneuver around the iPod/iPhone to press it. That's annoying. Secondly, the connector for the iPod/iPhone isn't too sturdy. Mine actually moves a bit, and when at first I thought this was a defect, so I went to check others in the store and yep, they all move. It doesn't feel sturdy at all, as if it could break off if you accidentally bump it or press your iPod down too hard. Thirdly, there are 4 buttons at the back of the device (to set the time etc.) that are just plain impossible to read unless you lift the device up, because those buttons' text is pointed downward. It's tremendously annoying. E.g. one of those buttons actually syncs your alarm clock with your iPod/iPhone a great idea but it's impossible to see which of the 4 buttons does that without lifting the entire thing. So, those are 3 tremendously annoying design flaws that knocked 2 stars off this device's rating for me.

Otherwise, there's not much to complain about. The clock numbers "shine" from the speaker, which looks very neat, and you can choose 3 levels of brightness for the clock (great if you have sensitive eyes). The sound quality is decent don't expect Bose quality, but for an alarm clock it's definitely acceptable with solid bass and treble levels.

Finally, there's the "app-enhanced" part of the device, which I wasn't able to test as I only have a "classic" iPod that doesn't do apps like the iTouch and iPhone do. As I understand it, it allows you to connect to Facebook (which, of course, you could do without the alarm clock too) and tracks sleep stats (which could be interesting, I guess, but wouldn't be a reason to buy the device for me).

So in the end, you have a decent iPod/iPhone alarm clock with a striking look but a few very annoying design flaws. I would definitely recommend heading to a physical store to check it out before ordering it, because there are many other options for this type of device, and this one frankly has some flaws that may be deal-breakers for you. Still, the price is definitely right, so if you're willing to overlook a couple of clumsily placed buttons, this could be the one for you.

UPDATE: 8/28/2010 I ended up taking this product back to the store, because it stopped charging my iPod. I think the little block that holds the iPod probably got loose. I've exchanged this iHome for the iHome ip92, which has the same functionality but none of the design flaws the buttons aren't blocked by the iPod, and the iPod docks at the top of the device rather than at the front. The sound quality is also MUCH better. Finally, it includes an AM/FM radio. So, if you're considering the iHome iA5, I would strongly recommend checking out the ip92 instead.

I purchased this as a mothers day gift from the kids for my wife. She had a twenty year old Sony alarm clock that still worked. Good thing, as after two days the the iHome would no longer charge the iPhone and it would give a message saying that the iHome was an incompatible device. I tried all the troubleshooting steps and no luck. I know it was not the phone as we tried two others and we are pretty sure it is a bad connection in the dock connector. I have sent it back for an exchange as the marketplace seller charges a restock fee otherwise but I have a feeling that this clock will not last 20 day let alone twenty years.

The speaker was okay, good enough for it's purpose but don't expect it to sound like a Bose radio. We had no alarm problems for the two days it worked.

This radio is almost exactly what I was looking for. Its water resistant design is sleek and reassuring. The speaker is loud enough for normal riding conditions. The backlit LCD and digital tuning are very nice. The bike mount is well designed it is very simple to quickly detach the radio to take it with you. The FM antenna forms a hard rigid handle on the bottom (not shown in picture) which is nice for carrying.

That said, I have a few complaints. First, the FM reception is pretty poor compared to my car radio (in the same locations). I haven't tried working with the AM band much, so I can't say if it is any better. I would be willing to endure a larger model or more batteries to get better reception.

Second, there's no line-in jack for attaching an mp3 player. This might have been a conscious decision to preserve the water resistant design, but I would have liked to see it just the same. Of course, if you get a radio transmitter for your mp3 player, then you're golden.

Third, $50 is expensive for a portable radio. I would have been willing to forgo the bike computer functions for a less expensive bike mount radio.

Fourth, the wire going to the wheel sensor is kind of short and there's no way to extend it short of splicing the wire.

This is great product. let me start off by saying that. I love the digital tuner, the speedometer and odometer features. The backlight makes me feel as if I am riding on something more expensive at night. My gripe with the product is the sound.

Where is the sound? I gave up my Pyramid bicycle radio because I thought I was getting a "SONY" radio. Just the fact that Sony would make a bicycle radio made me buy one w/o hearing it first.

If you are in a park or a quiet surburban block, it is great. Just do not ride in traffic and expect to hear anything. My older Pyramid in my mind seemed louder. I wish Sony would have done something with the sound. I am seriously thinking it is only my radio and I am willing to listen to another one to see if it is just my particular unit. Headphonejacks would have made this better as I would mount external speakers or something. Other than the low quality sound which I am trying to adapt to, the reception is great, the odometer/speedometer feature is awesome and the backlight makes me feel as I am riding something expensive at night.

Just a hint, when you are configuring the speedometer sensor, a little RTV (Silicone) in my opinion should be used behind it to keep it from sliding out of position on the fork along with tailored tie wrap straps Song provided with the kit. (When you buy it you will understand what I mean)

Do not let the sound factor discourage you, because I have seen the bicycle stuff out there, and this is the top of the pile. It is that they all seem to sound the same. If somone else can show me a compact bicycle radio with bigger sound email me at:

This is the perfect compliment to my hybridized mountain bike. Something was missing from my jaunts about town, and I was thinking of getting a cycle computer anyway. I tend to ride in the wee small hours of the morning when traffic is not much of an issue. It looks kind of silly on my bar, but I'll live. I've lived with it for a week and can tell you that the computer functions work well, the speaker really is loud enough at any speed I am likely to obtain, say 25 downhill with the wind, and the buttons and dials feel quite secure. The mounting mechanism is top notch.

As much as I enjoy the air and the easy traveling the bike allows, I didn't like missing my favorite radio programs especially in the morning. I wasn't going to wear a headset as it just isn't safe, not to mention illegal. Now this is no longer an issue.

Reception could be better on both AM and FM. FM fade is much more significant than, say, on my car's radio. I can't seem to pull any but the highest of the high-power AMs from adjacent markets. This may not be for you if you don't intend to ride within 20 miles or so of your favorite station's transmitters, which I do.

Frankly, I am infatuated with this little radio. Although a few subtle improvements could be made, especially considering it's a Sony who make really swell mundane radio sets; I recommend it to anyone either addicted to the radio or whose biking jaunts could use a little more entertainment.

This product was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a digital tuning bike radio that didn't require a headphone and this was literally the only one I could find. I have found all of the other bicycle computer features really helpful, too.

The only complaint I have is that the cord to connect the wheel sensor isn't long enough for a large bike such as mine, so it goes strait from the handlebar to the fork, instead of going down the goose neck to the fork or along the brake cable. It hasn't been a problem in 2 months of weekend riding, however. It doesn't look as 'clean' as I like to have things installed.

This item was purchased as a gift for my wife. It is easily mounted and instructions are pretty straight forward. The odometer, timer, speedo and radio work fantastic. This seems to be a well built unit and my wife enjoys it very much. Saw this item and compared it to others and am totally satisfied. The only thing that had to be done was to cut about 2" off a 1/2 rubber hose and slice it in half to to fit the anemic handle bars. The handle bar clamps were to big and did not tighten enough. The item arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

Just about to buy a replacement of this product, after the dog got ahold of it and chewed it. I'm not going to look for any other product, I will just order this item again. I have carried this little travel alarm every week for the last 4 years, from time zone to time zone and couldn't be happier with it. It adjusts, automatically every time.

I bought this primarily for my SUV. The factory-installed stereo came with a clock that was easy to read day or night, but the replacement stereo had a clock that's impossible to read when the sun is out. This clock has an LCD display, so the sunnier it gets, the easier it is to read. And when I'm travelling, I can just grab it and take it into the hotel with me at night.

The clock sets automatically, just as advertised. This sits inside my SUV, which is parked inside a garage with a bonus room above, and it receives the "atomic signal" with no problems. The description is a little misleading when it comes to time zones. You do have to manually change the time zone as you travel; this unit doesn't have a built-in GPS and doesn't know what time zone it is located in. This is easily done and not a drawback. I like it a lot, and recommend it.

This travel alarm does all I would expect of it as described by other reviewers. However, I noted when I bought the clock that one of the reviews mentioned an "excellent blue electroluminescent display". To me, that indicated that the clock had a "backlit" (or "back light") screen display. No so! This clock (currently, on 1/30/11) has a display that is lit by a white LED bulb from the right margin of the screen. What's the difference? A backlit screen is evenly lit over the entire display and results in the digital clock numbers having a high/increased contrast to the display background. A clock (such as this one) with a white LED side light display causes the digital clock numbers to fade (have a very low contrast) with respect to the display background. That doesn't make any difference during the daylight hours, but at night (in the dark); the display appears very faded when trying to check the time. I am far sighted, and the time display is impossible for me to read at night in a dark room using only the white led light that shines from right to left across the display. I could possibly read it with a flashlight, or by locating my glasses and putting them on to check the time, but that is usually not what one want to be doing when trying to fall back to sleep at (e.g.) 3:00 AM. Too bad the LA CROSSE Company did not make these clocks with a backlit display. The technology to do this has been around for many years. My last travel alarm was purchased from Radio Shack many years ago and (with its backlit display) I never had a problem checking the time at night. Because of the faded night time display on this clock, I would not recommend it to others. This is especially true if, like me, you are far sighted and have to wear glasses for "near" viewing. I was eager to receive this alarm clock and it arrived quickly. I had a bit of trouble setting it up at first and actually had to read the manual -unusual for me! The clock set up is not totally intuitive the way I prefer electronic devices to be, but I did manage to set it up properly without much pain.

The clock does everything right. The only limitation is likely due to the fact that the radio time signal isn't available world wide. So you are only able to set time zones for a 12-hour range, not 24 hours for all 24 time zones. Even in Europe I could not set the clock to CET directly. Turns out that's not a major problem. I just left the time zone set to US ET, where I live, and changed the time to 6 hours later. It worked just fine.

Upon returning from Europe I took the clock out of my bag and noticed it had set itself back to the current US ET time correctly. Nice!

I especially like being able to give the clock a small push at night and see the time and alarm time lit by the back light. The same action sets the 5or 10-minute snooze function if you choose to enable that at all. All in all this clock is great.

There are instructions on the back, but I think they leave out some important information. I'll wrestle with it again when I have the time and energy, but meanwhile just wanted to plead with the world just to keep things simple, especially when it comes to alarm clocks. The old ones were intuitive without being particularly accurate, the new ones, like this, are accurate but a challenge to operate.

I wanted to use my iPad 2 as a stereo while enjoying our pool without worrying about electrical outlets and power cords. With a 10 hour rechargeable battery life, Bluetooth connectivity, and compact design, the Philips Fidelio line caught my attention. While researching which model to buy, a friend received the modern looking DS7700 2 lb 1 oz docking speaker station. I read in other reviews about diminished power/volume while the Fidelio ran on battery, and asked for her thoughts. She assured me my concerns were unwarranted and urged me to make the purchase.

The Philip's Fidelio DS7700, manufactured in China, is designed to provide high quality sound in a portable aluminum finish shell. Shielding technology prevents cell phone interferance, and Dynamic Bass Boost plus various equalizer settings in the app provide rich stereo sound. The 30-pin style docking connector accepts iPods, iPhones, and iPads in their cases, or the auxiliary jack connects to other devices. The package includes the docking speaker, a protective brushed aluminum cover, plus power and auxiliary adapters.

The iPhone / iPad App

Using the Fidelio app is required to get the most out of the Philips Fidelio DS7700. Controlling the Dynamic Bass Boost (DBB) and equalizer settings can only be set through the app while physically connected. The Fidelio app also includes additional features including playback controls, a multi-function alarm clock, music collection browsing, sharing via Facebook and Twitter, access to more than 7,000 internet radio stations and podcasts, displays current local weather conditions, and helps you keep an eye on the docking speaker's battery life.

Like many others, I installed the Fidelio app on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4. Initially, the app would work fine one moment, and later shut down the moment it's fully loaded. There seemed to be no pattern to the problem. I browsed the Philip's Product page and found a solution in the frequently asked questions page. This problem is reported to occur when the app is installed on devices prior to iOS 4.3 being installed. To resolve the issue, delete the Fidelio app from your device, go to the app store and search for the Fidelio app, and reinstall.

Now that I can use the Fidelio app without it shutting down on me, I find I don't want to use it. The alarm clock requires the app to be running for use, browsing and listening to the internet radio stations and podcasts quickly looses its interest, and the app doesn't integrate with Pandora accounts. Philips attempts to enrich the Fidelio experience may successfully do so for some, but not for me. If it weren't for the audio setting capabilities, I would probably remove the app from my iDevices.

The Fidelio DS7700

For my needs, the Fidelio DS7700 docking speaker has fulfilled my expectations. While the volume decreases when the DS7700 is disconnected from a power source, it's only noticeable when disconnecting the power cord while listening. Even then, I have to be listening for the difference or I don't notice it. Additionally, I'm happy with the sound quality when using the docking speaker on battery power.

The Fidelio DS7700's compact design and rechargeable battery allows me to disconnect the power source and listen to music anywhere I want to around the house. I could be working in the garage, organizing my closet, or relaxing by the pool. It doesn't matter where I want to listen, as it's so easy to grab the docking speaker and place it near where I intend to be.

This is my only iPad docking station, although I could use the auxiliary jack on other devices. Even still, the Fidelio DS7700 has replaced my Philips DCM250 iPhone docking station as my favorite device. If you are looking for a portable iPad / iPhone docking speaker system with full rich sound, consider the Fidelio DS7700.

I purchased this item to use with an IPad 3. Upon reciept I excitedly opened it it up, plugged it in, and docked my IPad to it. It was at this point that I noticed a potential problem: It wasn't really made for an IPad: The IPad is just too heavy. It worked the first few times, but as the IPad rests it leans back, putting stress on the connector where it plugs in. Sure enough, by the 2nd day, when docking the IPad it no longer will play sounds through the speaker. The connector where it docks has loosened and now the only way for the IPad to register that it's docked is to grab it, lean it forward, and press slightly down. As soon as you even think of letting go though, it disconnects. The worst part? You can't even return it! Read the description above: it has rechargeable batteries. Because of that Amazon classifies it containing hazardous materials and won't take it back. Why it's ok for them to ship out what they consider hazardous materials but not take it back I'm still trying to figure out, but the end result is $175 spent for a defective product that they won't take back 2 days after receipt. Save yourself some frustration and look elsewhere if you're looking for an IPad dock.

The Philips DS7700 is a truly exceptional sound dock that matches my iPad2 and iPod Touch very well. While not cheap, I think it is a very good value compared to other premium portable sound options with bluetooth.

The good stuff:

Elegant and Practical Form Factor. I have used quite a few iPod docks, of all sizes. This is the first highly portable one I have tried that sounds good. About 1 foot long, but only an inch thick, its cover and rounded design make it simple to throw into a suitcase or laptop/messenger bag to enjoy on trips. It has an aluminum shell, and when closed, has no overhanging switches to get caught on stuff. Its beautifully finished metal case feels solid and matches the elegant design of the iPad/Pod itself.

Sounds very good, and plays amazingly loud for its size. For my purposes, the DS7700 has the best combination of small size and good volume, clarity, and bass performance I have seen in any iPod dock. I am sure it would not satisfy those who must have earsplitting bass or theater level volume, but for me, it is the smallest dock I have seen that has excellent sound and enough volume to fill a medium sized room (hotel room for example). At lower volumes it has really excellent sound....crank it up and the high frequencies get a little strident and the bass gets thin. I rate it 5 stars for sound for my purposes.

Great charging dock design. It unfolds to provide a sturdy support for iPod/iPhone, and an acceptable support for my iPad 2. (Acceptable only because its small size would make it a bit tippy if you had kids knocking it around). The connector should work well with iPods/Pads/Phones without removing them from most cases, and requires no adjustments for different devices. It charges both my low current iPod and high current iPad just great, but must be plugged in to AC power to do so.

-Bluetooth works great, and from well across the room. It pairs almost instantly and remembers its pairing the next time you use it. I have not exhausted the battery, but have used it several hours without it running down.

the free iPod/iPad apps are fine. They provide easy access to tune-in internet radio, as well as equalizer functions and battery level indicators. It works fine without the app too.

Could be better:

Owners manual is terrible. Ignore it. After you get the hang of the DS7700 it is easy to operate, but getting there is more confusing than it should be for such a simple device. Things like what flashing and + mean (charging I think) and how bluetooth paring works are not mentioned. After 15 minutes of fiddling, you should get it all, but that is 15 minutes that could be saved.

The AC adapter brick is pretty big about the size of a large bar of soap, and lacks fold down plugs or way to wind up the cord that would make it more travel friendly. With all the thought that went into the DS7700, they just threw in a generic wall wart. For the premium price asked, it would have been thoughtful if they had included a travel sack that would hold both the speakers and the adapter.

The DS7700 looks great with an iPod/Pad docked into it...but not so great when used remotely via bluetooth. The iPod back support will not fold flat with the rear panel support extended, it spoils the look on your desk. You fold back the support, and the rear brace retracts so the DS7700 rolls back on your desk. The stylish cover can only be used with the speakers off....if they had put speaker vents in it, you could use the DS7700 it on bluetooth with the cover on. That would be perfect! The cover looks nice, but I would have rather had a sack that carried both the AC adapter and the Speakers for normal travel.

No Battery Level Indicator on the unit itself. You can see battery level when the player is docked and the Philip's App is visible, but that's not too convenient.

I really like the DS7700, and think it well worth the price. Sound and construction rate 5 stars, but I am judging it 4 stars because the manual could be much improved, and the portability enhanced with a better designed AC Adapter, cover, and an included case.

The Fidelio docking speaker for the iPad, iPod, iPhone, etc is a sleek little racetrack shaped set of rechargeable speakers with built in dock to support various other gadgets.

The controls are minimal. There is an on-off sliding switch at the back, a + and button on the front for volume control, and a "connect" button with the bluetooth icon. As the gadgets you would dock in these speakers have their own play, ff, rw, pause, etc buttons you really don't need more than that. If you desire, you can download the Fidelio app from the App Store on any of your iApple devices that connect to the App Store. The Fidelio app is cool, and allows for different sound profiles to maximize sound quality. There is also a clock and the same types of controls that iTunes gives you. I find that I typically skip over the Fidelio app, as the sound out of the box is just fine with mewarm and rich and clear. My son likes the finer control offered by the app and when he has snagged the speakers and brought them to his room, he typically plays with the app.

What I really like about this is the size and portability. The weight isn't heavy but it definitely feels sturdy and won't tip over with the addition of an iPad. I keep the speakers/dock in my kitchen, plugged in and ready to go. However, when I'm at my work table and the boys are rowdy, I'll unplug it and put it right on the table. Going outside? I can take it with me so I can listen to music while puttering about on our patio tending to my container garden. It is very convenient. If toting it for longer trips, there is a cover which attaches to cover the dock connectors and speaker holes and keep them clean and functional.

Overall, I like that everyone in our family (each with a different iGadget) can use this. We were using an 11 year old Bose Wave CD/AM/FM monstrosity before this and one ipod would use the apple-made dock and another would need that unplugged and reconnected directly, and having the ipad just sitting on the counter, while we are busy in the kitchen baking and cooking, seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. This also conveniently has bluetooth connection, which is a definite plus as I'm forever needing my ipod touch in the middle of a song, while working on various projects. It's nice being able to pick it up and hold it in my hand, and even leave the room for a few minutes with it, without disrupting the music. The bluetooth is not something that was on my list of "needs" for new speakers, but it is definitely a handy feature, and the sound is equal (according to my ears) to the sound quality when it is directly docked.

I have tried other docks (I've tried a couple of the Philips ones) and this is the first one that really fits our needs for quality sound and portability and versatility without any negatives coming to mind. The Bose has moved into another room, where it doesn't need to act as AUX speakers for all of our devices.

Sounds great and looks nice, but I bought this primarily because it was rechargeable and portable. But after three months, it simply would not hold a charge. There is no bass boost and the downloadable app is a waste of time. It works well with an iPhone, but the bulk of an iPad frequently causes the back support bracket to collapse. Lastly, it comes with this nice looking cover, but there is no locking mechanism or magnets to hold it in place. It just sits on top and really kind of useless. Look elsewhere.

This is what I had been looking for for a while. Simple. Does what it says. I plugged it in, threw my Gen 4 Ipod on it and it prompted me to download the app clicked yes, downloaded. Opened app. Synced the time right away. Set alarm. Worked fine. Even the sound was better than I expected for Memorex brand. Also build quality is better than expected. I didn't care about the sound since if I want great sound i would dock it to my stereo but it sounds fine better than some much cheaper Ilove stuff I have tried before. It has a heavy feel to it so you won't have to chase it around your nightstand and the dock moves to let you dock without destroying it. Perfect.

This is a reasonably priced clock that also works well at charging your iPhone. The directions are a little confusing, but once you figure it out, it's pretty easy to operate. If I could change one thing, I would suggest that the clock numbers be a little larger.

I got it on May 12 to replace regular battery operated clock which ate battery and not accurate any more or even stopped.

Once I received this clock, i try it in my work place, it did not seem to adjust the time, I believed there is metal roof affecting the signal reception with Google how radio control clock works. I brought back home and installed in middle of the house. It was facing west with lots of windows opening. Having slope outside house, I still worried with signal reception issue but the clock seems run well and keep the time.

Last weekend, Nov 4, was daylight saving end, the clock told me it works perfectly because the time was adjusted, set back one hour and compared to oven clock was still showing summer time. I am very happy with this clock that always keep the time right. The clock is made with plastic in white, not fancy with big hour numbers that can be seen from a distance. I highly recommend.

For reference, I live in Birmingham, AL. Since the product title just say wall clock, so customer may over look this great clock too.

I purchased this clock as a simple replacement to our current clock which couldn't keep time anymore. I have to admit, until it arrived I didn't know it was a "radio controlled" clock which gets it's time from a radio station in Colorado. Well, since I can't pick up any radio stations from Colorado on my radio (we live in Southern California), I figured it wouldn't work. It pretty much says in the instructions that if it can't get the time from the radio station, it won't work.

Well, low and behold, it received it's instructions within hours and has been showing the exact time since then. I think it's supposed to ping (check) the Colorado radio station once a day or so to keep itself in sync. I'm imagining it only does this once in awhile because it does take more energy (battery power) to do the checking.

Our clock is located in an outer room on the east side of our house (the side towards Colorado). I'm not sure what it would do if there were more walls to interfere, but the fact in itself that it's finding Colorado at all amazes me.

I've only had it about a month so I can't speak for it's longevity or battery life, but so far it's worked great.

This is a great little clock! It doesn't take up much space, but it has features that you would expect to find on a larger, more expensive clock. It is super-easy to operate, too. I'm sensitive to light, and sometimes the lowest setting on some clocks can be too bright. But, on this clock, the lowest setting is just perfect. 2 seperate alarms, radio or beep. Time is correct out of the box that's the only "automatic time set" in play here -1 star for the "automatic time set" which isn't really... 3 settings for display. The lowest is dim enough not to bother me and the highest is fairly bright low is tough to see in full daylight..

This clock radio shares an obvious family resemblance to its highly successful predecessor, the Sony ICF-C218 Automatic Time Set Clock Radio (Black): 90% of the buttons and functions of the earlier version are implemented and placed identically in the newer model. The buttons and their labeling are so intuitive that a manual is hardly needed (but helpful for the Sleep and Time Zone buttons). The ICF-C318 possesses four new buttons, switches and controls and a feature that make it a more desirable model than the earlier one: a 3-level brightness button, a two-level buzzer volume switch, a second alarm mode rotary switch, a second alarm time setting control, and most importantly, the 'No Power No Problem' feature means the alarm will still sound even if the AC power is off when the alarm was set to ring. The efficacy of those new contols and feature were assessed.

The brightness control was a feature requested by many users of the ICF-C218 who complained it was too bright in a darkened room. There is no doubt that the display of the newer ICF-C318 can be set to be very dim (thus pleasing insomniacs bothered by the 'nighlight effect') but at its brightest setting it is still too dim to be seen clearly in a brightly lit room. The alarm buzzer is not really a buzzer, its a peeper and the two level slide control has little noticeable effect on volume its just not very loud either way. When ignored the alarm peeps more frequently. If you need a really loud alarm, you will be safer using the radio alarm rather than the buzzer. The rotary switches to set alarm mode (off, buzzer, radio) are improved in that the indicator on the switch is a larger, more visible groove than the the tiny, hard-to-see pit of the earlier model. The alarm time set knobs allow a new time to be set very quickly and easily; they are just a little clunkier looking than the sleek recessed toggle control of the earler model. The 'No Power No Problem' feature is the best new feature for this unit that sets it apart from the ICF-C218. I expect my alarm clock to work at a very high level of reliability, a power outage is no excuse for failure of that function. In this regard, the ICF-C318 performs as expected, but the ICF-C218 fails miserably. If the alarm mode is set to radio and the AC power is off when the alarm should ring, the ICF-C318 uses the buzzer (peeper) alarm instead; the buzzer probably drains less energy from the tiny backup battery than the radio.

The radio portion of this clock radio performs adequately. The sound can be quite clear for a strong station but it is obviously not high fidelity. The radio portion of this unit is just gravy the alarm and clock function are the only real crucial parts to me. It seems to keep good time. I synchronised it with an atomic clock initially and a week later see no difference between the two when they were compared again. Clock time is maintained by a Li wafer battery even when the AC power is off; I don't know why they didn't use a more common, cheaper, higher capacity backup battery like an AA. The clock will perform automatic advance and setback of the time for regions that follow daylight savings time. Fortunately, this feature can be disabled for regions like the state of Arizona that do not use DST. By comparison, Emerson clock radios that have 'SmartSet' are crippled DST advance and setback cannot be disabled.

How about aesthetics? In my opinion the earlier version's (ICF-C218) simpler shape and flat faceplate were snappier looking. The rounded faceplate and rear of the newer ICF-C318 seem less attractive. But its easy to dismiss the skin-deep homeliness when the other good features of the ICF-C318 are considered. The ICF-C318 comes in a white case and a black case version (complete Sony model numbers ICF-C318/WC and ICF-C318/BC respectively). This review applies to both color models because they are functionally identical. Although I don't normally like white appliances, it is a little bit easier to read the black button labels on the white case than the white button labels on the black case.

It took a while for me to understand that with this clock there is both a manual and an automated way to spring clock time forward for Daylight Saving Time and to 'fall back' when Standard Time resumes. These two mechanisms don't always play nice together and that can lead to confusion. Well, at least it confused me. I should also point out that the instructions that came with the clock just discuss US Time Zones which have designated DST start/stop dates at least until 2015, and spring forward and fall back at 2AM. In other parts of the world, the designated DST dates and times often differ from the US so it is unlikely that the automated DST adjustment of this clock will be of any use (except in Canada). So where you don't fall into a US time zone, the automatic DST adjustment should be disabled; just remember to use the manual method on the appropriate date. And of course if you live in a part of the US (like Arizona) where DST is not observed, the automatic DST adjustment should likewise be disabled.

I have concluded that the Time Zone setting has no effect on anything including automatic DST adjustment. I can only envision one situation where it would matter or be helpful to set or adjust the Time Zone: if you take the alarm clock with you when you travel and in your travels you cross time zone boundaries. Adjusting the Time Zone allows the clock time to be altered in 1 hour increments without having to go through the Clock button to manually reset the time. Its easy to set the Time Zone, so why don't you set it for your zone anyway?

I will spare you some of the trial and error I went through to try to figure out how DST was implemented and if it worked correctly on this clock. DST adjustments are explained in the manual that came with the clock but those explanations didn't go quite far enough. I wanted to understand it so I could set this up for my mom and know exactly what would happen when DST started and stopped. Maybe my explanation will help you.

Before you start, use the Snooze button to verify the year, month and day. If incorrect, then set using the Clock button.

To Disable Automatic DST Adjustment For Places That Don't Observe DST

Hold down the DST button until 'Aut' then 'OFF' appear, then release. If 'Aut' then 'On' appear, release the DST button then press and hold it again to display 'Aut' then 'OFF' and release the DST button. If the DST LED is illuminated on the front of the clock, press the DST button momentarily: this will have the effect of extinguishing the DST LED and setting back the time 1 hour. If the time is incorrect, find a good reference time source and use the Clock and + buttons to adjust. So now you are good to go in places like Arizona that don't observe DST. Put some clear tape across the Time Zone and DST buttons so you won't be inadvertantly adjusting them as you are stabbing for the Alarm Reset button in the dark.

To Manually Invoke DST Adjustment

First, make sure you have disabled automatic DST adjustment by holding down the DST button to get Aut' then 'OFF' in the display. To 'spring forward' the clock, momentarily press the DST button. This will illuminate the DST LED and set the clock ahead 1 hour. To 'fall back' momentarily press the DST button. This will extinguish the DST LED and set the clock back 1 hour. By this method you can easily compensate for DST changes in locations other than the US where the date or time for DST start/end are different from the US.

Automatic DST Adjustment

If you live in a US time zone where DST is implemented, the automatic DST adjustment of this clock is handy. It's handy because you don't have to remember to do it and because it's easier than manually changing the time on your clock. To enable automatic DST adjustment, hold down the DST button until 'Aut' then 'On' appear, then release. If 'Aut' then 'OFF' appear, release the button and repeat to display 'Aut' then 'On' and release the DST button. If the date is within the range for DST, then the DST LED illuminates. If the date is within the range for Standard Time, then the DST LED is extinguished. If automatic DST adjustment is on, then at 2 AM on March 9, 2008 for example the clock suddenly jumped forward to display 3 AM and the DST LED became illuminated.

Future Proof Automatic DST Adjustment?

I set the clock ahead to March 8, 2015 and verified that it 'sprung forward' at 2 AM like it should. Without checking the years between 2008 and 2015, I assume the clock would also apply and remove DST on the appropriate date for those years. So the automated DST adjustment of this clock is probably good for at least the next seven years unless DST gets discontinued or altered by Congress before then.

This is a pretty okay clock. I bought it because I'm going off to college. I wanted a loud alarm clock so I could make sure I woke up for class, and I hoped this would be loud since it had two alarm settings [high and low]. However, both the settings create basically the same volume. The volume for the alarm clock is definitely not loud enough, and it is a beep NOT a buzzer as it says on the box. However, the radio does work and it is loud enough, so you can set that as your alarm clock. Another thing is that this clock promised that the time would be set when I plugged it in. It was not set and I had to set it myself. I know thats not much of a hassle, but I feel that they shouldn't advertise false information. [btw: I live on the US east coast so it wasn't that I had to set the right time zone.]

So in conclusion: 3 out of 5 stars. Good clock but 2 of the claimed features were not actually present.

This clock radio works very well. I like the adjustable display as the display on my previous clock radio was like a spot light even on low. The radio reception is excellent. I live in the hinterland about 70 miles from Austin and yet I can pick up my favorite Austin radio station. I tried an Emerson first from my local Walmart and ended up taking it back because it had terrible reception. It would not receive even the local station.

I obviously misunderstood this product. I thought I would be able to type in a complete sentence and get a translation. That is not what this does. It gives words and "common phrases". Few of the common phrases were what I needed. However, it did come in handy on my trip. I fell and needed a wheel chair temporarily. The people at the hotel did not know the term. I was able to find it in the translator and then they then were able to find me a wheel chair I could rent. So I was glad to have it along given my circumstances.

Keypad was hard to use. Could not access the menu that had set phrase sayings that was advertised on the box cover. ENTER key seemed to be in the wrong location. Kept pressing what ideally would have been the ENTER key, but it was actually the CANCEL key, which made it a pain because you'd have to start entries all over again. Ended up returning unit , but may have to pay for restocking fee of 20%....ouch! On the upbeat, this unit was much cheaper if bought on Amazon vs. buying at a much higher rate at Best Buy.

What is most impressive about this radio is its relative freedom from power issues. This radio is very conservative in its power consumption whether one is using an external 3-Volt power source, a set of "AA" cells, or the supplied 2 x "AAA" cell internal-rechargeable pack.

Reading the pre-sales description of this radio one may mistakenly assume that it plays for only thirty minutes from the internal rechargeable batteries. In fact what is being claimed is that one-minute of cranking the dynamo results in 30-minutes of playback. Cranking for two minutes will result in one hour of playback. The longer you crank the longer it plays. When fully charged the internal rechargeable pack will operate the radio at a reasonable volume level all day and on into the night.

The radio has a built-in replaceable "AAA" plug-in battery pack similar to those found in wireless phones. These batteries are recharged by the dynamo. This pack is accessible and replaceable, after 300-500 recharge cycles, by removing six-screws at the back of the case.

Further two "AA" batteries are easily replaceable through an access-port at the rear of the cabinet. The radio can also be powered by an external source, solar-cell, wall-wart, or what have you, through a socket located under a splash-proof cover on the left-side of the radio.

The dynamo handle is sturdy. The left-side of the case is partially cylindrical in shape. The left-edge of the speaker grill is actually a rubber grip. The radio is well balanced and easy to hold while cranking the dynamo. The dynamo can be cranked in either direction facilitating use by either Right or Left handed people. Lefties will not be able to see the green-LED which illuminates to indicate that one has reached adequate dynamo cranking speed. A minor inconvenience.

The bottom of the case has four rubber-pads which when combined with the radio's weight cause it to grip well on flat surfaces. No tipping. The overall build quality, fit and finish, of this radio is very-good.

A splash-proof earphone port is located next to the external power-port. Both earphone channels are driven, monaurally. The radio's internal speaker is only two-inches in diameter. This is not a boom-box, but the sound that emanates from the speaker is very accurate within its effective range. Classical and Jass music sound fine. If you are a heavy rock-listener you may yearn for more oomph in your everyday listening.

The primary purpose of this radio is to provide information when the lights go out, but it makes a useful everyday radio as well, with the previously mentioned exception for rockers.

There is a small incandescent bulb that illuminates the slide-rule tuning-dial and provides enough-light externally for small-tasks such as reading your watch or a business-card. The lamp is illuminated through a small push-button on the front of the cabinet. There is another small push-button on the top of the cabinet. This button activates a chirping sound through the speaker. The sound is similar to that of a smoke detector, but not as loud. This does not seem like a very useful feature but perhaps some of you will think of a use for it?

Another switch on the top of the radio selects between the AM and FM bands. A switch on the back of the radio selects between the internal dynamo powered batteries, or the replaceable "AA" battery and external power options.

Most importantly, in addition to all of the above, is that this radio has very good sensitivity and selectivity characteristics. Analog-dial radio tuning may be a new experience for any of you that were raised on digital-dial radios. The Vernier slide-rule dial of this radio is relatively small so one has to tune slowly and deliberately to isolate stations. However, once a station is tuned-in, one is rewarded with solid drift-free reception. The audio is free of noise or distortion, has surprising fidelity, and good dynamic range, within the limited range of the small speaker.

I recommend that every household have one of these radios, and another in the trunk of the car. When disaster inevitably strikes the prudent use of this radio as a source of current information could allay further personal-suffering, or loss of life.

I am a radio "nut"; I hold an amateur (Ham) radio Extra Class license. I have owned many radios (including several Sangeans) and this little "thingy" is probably the handiest AM/FM Receiver I have ever owned; I carry it around the house constantly to keep up with "talk radio" programs when I am not in the Ham Shack; I crave information and news.

This is a well-built little radio. It has the basic features that you want in an emergency.

For daily use, insert two AA batteries, and flip the dial on the back to "battery." In an emergency (when you don't have batteries), use the crank to charge the built-in "dynamo." At that time, turn the dial on the back from "battery" to "dynamo."

I bought this to replace a junky "Eton FR-350" that I found on Ebay. Don't even consider that radio. Struggling to open the battery compartment caused me to cut my finger on the sharp plastic.

I was looking at several emergency radios from eton, gundig, and sony, and did mucho research. This one blows them all away.

The quality, fit, finish, and performance of this radio is top notch. The reception is excellent. It works off the crank, alkalines, or a/c adapter(not included).

This radio makes the eton/grundig emergency radios look like toys. No regrets at all! Highly recommended, don't waste time with other emergency radios. I did not need a cellphone charger.

Everyready makes an emergency battery pack for about 20.00 bucks no cranking and works great. Buy one of these instead. We lost all cell towers on the last hurricane anyway. Don't bet your life on a cell phone, the towers may be down or overloaded.

I live in Hurricane country Florida and needed a real emergency radio not a toy, this is it. I thought I wanted a NOAA band but AM is the official emergency frequency. I found NOAA to be slow and over-rated.

Love the radio, use it daily, buy it. Nuf' said.

This was my second attempt at finding a portable emergency radio. I previously bought a Kaito KA1102BLK radio, sent it back and bought this. I think I found a keeper.

On the plus side:

This is a solidly built, simple, radio. Sound quality is good, and the unit feels just right in the palm of your hand, the crank seems like it will last. The tuning is easy to see in the dark.

A few cons:

This radio picks up interference very easily on the AM frequency when near other electronics. I can't use it anywhere near my computer or I get whistling sounds. As an emergency or bedside radio this won't be an issue however.

It doesn't come with a 3 volt AC power adapter. For $40 I think it should come with an AC adapter, I hate when manufacturers do this. So you're stuck buying a separate universal adapter, unless of course you want to run on dynamo or batteries all the time.

The volume sensitivity is a little twitchy, it jumps very quickly in volume level at the low end.

Besides these minor issues, I'm happy with it. The reception and sound is adequate, the size is just right, solid build, and good ergonomics. I'm tough to please, so I think most people should be happy with this radio.

Side Note: While writing this, I decided to try out several AC adapters that I already owned for other electronics. It turns out that this radio will work with less voltage than stated in the manual. I hooked it up to an adapter for a Norelco beard trimmer rated at 1.6volts, and the radio works great! (The light and buzzer won't work with the 1.6 volt adapter however, they require 3volts.)

I love the concept for this device I wanted something to clean up the clutter on my bed stand: alarm clock, iphone charger, and lamp. This was the solution all of them in one! Overall, I ended up not being happy with this product.

Pros: I did like the display. Good sound. Does charge ipone.

Cons: Too big. The light was too dim to be of any use.

Major con: There is no way to adjust the volume on the alarm. It was too loud very jarring and audible to people in other rooms. Not a nice way to wake up.

I am so happy to say that I LOVE this product. It is a great iPod/iPhone speaker and alarm clock. It looks great on my bedside table. The sound is great, and it gets very loud.

I would agree with the other review that the lamp is pretty dim, but that's not what I bought it for. In my opinion, it's great that this awesome speaker and alarm clock comes with a night light! The lamp also has a dimming option, with 10 different levels. You are able to change the dimming level either by touching the side of the speaker, or by using the remote control.

Yes, this product also comes with a very sturdy remote control that controls everything! With the remote control, you can even scroll through your lists of artists, songs, playlists, etc. on the iPod and choose a song that way. I love this feature a lot. It's so convenient.

I was most impressed by a very thoughtful feature that the alarm clock has. The product comes with an extra battery that goes into the bottom of the unit (where the alarm clock is). This back up battery will keep the clock running, and it will remember any alarms already set, if the unit is ever unplugged or there is a power outage. Wow!!

Overall, this is a great product. I would recommend it to anyone. I love using it!

This item Looks good, has great sound, but the lighting is horrible. It's more for mood than lighting a room. The customer service of the seller gets a big fat zero thanks to the Sales Manager, Mike S. I saw the product for less at Walmart. When I contacted Datevision Computers to get ab adjustmebt, I was told that basically they cant compete with Walmart pricess. I considered returning it but I was told , in an attemot to threaten me, there is a restocking fee and I have to pay for return shpping. In any event, i'm keeping the item but the customer service is bad.
