This is my second dock. I have one for work and the other on my night stand. Turns my most useful device (my phone) into a reliable alarm clock. Would recommend to anyone. Pros it fits the captivate well, charges the phone, and the desktop app is functional, defaulting to a clock. If you use your alarm, it turns the captivate into a nice bedside alarm clock.Consvery few options. NO DATA SYNC WITH USB. ALWAYS defaults to Home Dock App unable to default to car home app (this dock would have worked perfectly in my car with velcro if the app wasn't such a pita to setup by the time you exit the home dock app.)

Way too much static in the line out (so much that it's basically pointless having the feature). Also, the stand doesn't integrate well with the phone one must disable the speaker in the "Desk Home" app (AND, in some cases turn the media volume off to get the phone to actually shut up so that only the line-out on the back of the stand is producing static...err, I mean sound). Intuitive, huh?Overall quite disappointed...so much the product ought to be pulled until the kinks have been worked out.
But to be fair, not all is bad. On a positive note, it does charge the phone decently well...I suppose it could be a fairly decent solution for a night stand/alarm clock arrangement. Aside from that, I've found the stand to be largely useless...

The setup was somewhat straightforward. The setup wizard located my home's wifi and connected to it without hassle. It detected the time and my current location straight from the network, which was great, although the daylight savings setting option was a bit vague and resulted in the time being set an hour earlier. This was quickly fixed through the main menu.
The remote control was not performing very well upon initial setup, but casting off the batteries that shipped with the product and replacing them with some new alkalines improved performance. I wouldn't even bother with the batteries that ship with it. If they are not DOA, they will be in short order.
The battery replacement did not completely eradicate the remote control's unreliability. I'm not exactly sure where the sensor is for the remote, but if you have the radio on a nightstand or a low table, trying to use the remote control from above the device doesn't work that well. It helps to move the remote in front of and on the plane of the radio.
Enough setup, onto the product features themselves.
iPod / iPhone dock: Works as advertised. There are many devices out there that incorporate a dock for an iPod or iPhone. It's basically table stakes to get in the game. It comes with little dock inserts for the various models of iPhones and iPods, just like everyone else. And I never use any of them because, just like all the others, they don't account for a cover on the device and so none of them really fit my device in its day-to-day state. Anyway, one feature that is nice is that if you insert your iPod/iPhone into the dock, a menu comes up on the front display that offers to take you directly to the iPod menu. No need to search for the iPod menu. But if you are just throwing the device on there to charge it and are already, say, listening to Pandora or a podcast through the internet radio, that menu disappears in a few seconds and doesn't interrupt what you are already listening to.
Pandora: Setup was easy. You log into your account and the device gives you a Pandora website to go to on your computer and a code to enter to sync the device with your account. It takes two minutes. Once done, all of my Pandora channels appear on the device. I can play my custom stations or dial up new ones. There are buttons on the remote to allow you to "like" or "dislike" a song. On the whole it works very well. The only thing I noticed is that I can't see if I have already "liked" as song on the display, and if I hit the "like" button on the remote for a song that has already been categorized that way I get no feedback. It only gives me feedback if a song is newly "liked" or "disliked". It's a minor annoyance, but given the slightly erratic performance of the remote, it always begs the question, "Did I already 'like' this song or is the remote just not picking it up?"
Internet Radio: Pretty impressive. The radio determines your location from the network and automatically gives you a "local stations" options that include any radio stations that stream. Personally, I listen to a lot of podcasts, and was able to search for my favorites with the remote and get a list of the latest available episodes. The catalog seems pretty expansive, too, as I don't consider the Mises Institute to be at the top everyone's podcast list, but I listen to it all the time and the radio found it without an issue.
Sound: I'm not an audiophile by any means, but this unit kicks out some nice sound in my opinion. I was impressed at the volume available and there is a selection of equalizer settings (including custom bass/treble settings) that let you tweak the sound to your liking.
Untested features: I have not tried the alarms (there are two), sleep, or music library functions. I am assuming the music library will detect available shared media from computers on your network and make them available to the device, similar to something a PS3 can do.
Glitches: Obviously, when your wireless network goes down, the internet radio goes down. The device can't be blamed for my/your wireless outages. The remote is also not quite intuitive in places. Instead of hitting the "menu" button when it seems like you would, you hit the left arrow button. Stuff like that.
Value: Current price on Amazon (less than half MSRP) makes it a consideration, I think. Value is subjective, of course, but I think most people will be happy with the product in the 160-range, but would feel like it was overpriced at MSRP.
Overall: Frankly, I was expecting less. We're only a few days in with the product, and we've had some dropouts that I am attributing to my flaky network. If you can get used to the navigation, most will be happy with the gadget. Solid sound and feature set. Could be the sole unit used in a small apartment if desired.

I have had a lot of fun with this radio! I'm no audiophile, but to this casual listener, the sound is amazing. Out of the box, the audio is just big and round. I have an older BOSE alarm clock/CD player, and this radio sounds much better, if that means anything. There are the usual equalizer settings, so you can customize as you will.Set up was easy, if a bit tedious. The radio has an Ethernet port, but I easily added it to my hidden wireless network. You select letters and numbers using a wheel on the radio itself or using the arrows on the remote control. You use the same technique for anything you have to enter: search terms, passwords, logins, etc.
The remote control is the most functional one I've received with a radio/alarm clock. It's bigger than most radio remotes I've seen, but it's capable of doing anything you can do on the radio itself. So it's not just a power switch and channel and volume changer like some of the others I've used.
I've used Pandora, the Internet radio, and docked my iPhone 4, and all worked seamlessly. I've had the radio a little over a week, and I've used it several times. One time, I experienced silence for 20 or 30 seconds when it suddenly had to reconnect to my network.
It has the usual alarm clock functions. Each dual alarm can be set to go off once, daily, each weekday, or each weekend day. Ultimately, however, I was unable to use this as a bedside alarm clock. First of all, at one foot wide by eight inches deep, it's footprint is too big for my already-crowded nightstand. Also, my nightstand sits a little higher than my bed. The display (which is too small to read more than a few feet away) is set at about a 45 degree angle, midway between vertical and horizontal. I can't see it lying down. I do wish the display was larger and set more vertically.
Because of these issues, and because I already have most of the radio's functions available to me in my bedroom, I decided to put the radio in my kitchen where I enjoy it immensely while puttering around there. And when I unplugged the radio to move it from the nightstand to the kitchen, it saved all my settings. Because I didn't find a place for a backup battery, I was worried I would have to reconfigure everything. But it just reconnected to my network, reset the date and time, and was ready to go immediately. Bonus!

I wanted to like this iPod dock with internet radio, but I really wasn't thrilled with it. The foot print of this device is rather large (about the size of a sheet of printer paper). Set up was a bit of a pain with the dial "keyboard". The dial is a bit on the stiff side and I just found it irritating to use. Once it was set up using Pandora with the dock was easy but it wasn't any easier than using it with an iPhone and a speaker only dock.Sound quality for this dock was good, but I didn't think it was anything spectacular. In fact, I think the sound quality on my cheap Skull Candy ipod pipe is better.
I'm absolutely not a fan of the "wall mountable" feature. To use this function, you would essentially have to put your iPod into the dock so that it is parallel with the floor. I couldn't imagine putting my iPhone into that dock with it in that position.
The dock works but I found the set up to be a pain and the size to be cumbersome. I suppose if space and money are no object it's an OK product but I wouldn't buy this if I were in the market for a new speaker dock for my iPhone.

We use this in the office mainly for the function of Pandora. It has been great so far, very easy to sync with pandora account onlnine by adding and deleting stations, etc. The sound is very clear. You can even skip forward, and give a song a thumbs up or thumbs down on the device. We did a lot of research for a product that could do this and for the price this is great.--
I was really tempted to rate this radio with 5 stars, since it is one of the better internet radios I've encountered. It is not perfect, but it's definitely worth careful consideration.
The big selling point for me is that this radio will do internet radio AND it will charge many iPhones (3G, 3GS, 4) and iPods with the universal i-connector. If you don't have one of these devices and/or don't care if you can charge your device, you can still play music from ANY device with a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack. Compared to the competition, which appears to be one player from Grace (sold through Sharper Image), this unit deserves to be considered.
In addition, it's quite a good alarm clock: you can wake to any function (internet radio, regular radio, etc), there are two completely independent alarms that can be set to go on certain days but not others, you can specify the volume of each alarm, etc. None of this interferes with the sleep function that goes in 15 minute increments. I mention this because some older Sony models allowed either an alarm OR the sleep function... There is no battery back-up, but you can set the machine to automatically update the time after a power outage. The alarm works well. For those days when it really matters, you can always use the iPhone as a back-up.
Internet performance will depend on your router, but I had mine up and running (VERY reliably) from across the house in about 2 minutes. For other products (notably a certain wireless Brother monochrome printer) I've spent up to 2 hours messing around with this type of thing so I was impressed.
The interface on the radio is a little clunky, and the remote is required for certain operations. I quickly and easily started to use Pandora (the like/dislike buttons clearly an afterthought on the remote control, and not present on the radio), searched for and found a selection of internet radio stations. Interestingly, some BBC stations (but not the world service) appear to be blocked, presumably because I'm not paying a license fee. The thing which blew my mind was when I searched for podcasts of a particular NPR show. Within seconds, I had a choice of shows from the last ten days. Basically, that's free on-demand radio of my favorite broadcasts in seconds. I might buy another for my kitchen.
The one thing I did not check is how easy it would be to mount this thing on the wall and still charge an iPhone. I guess it would probably work since the connector is at an angle. I have it on my bedside table, where it's the size of two generous hardback books.
As I mentioned, there are some minor annoyances. The clickwheel is fiddly and the remote is only marginally better. My biggest annoyance is the display, which can only be dimmed with the remote, and that setting is not saved when the radio switches off. Huh? For such a great alarm clock, this seems like an oversight. Still, the features are amazing, the sound is really pretty good, and the unit looks quite attractive. For other rooms of the house, it would be perfect, but you probably wouldn't need the alarm or the iPhone charging feature, at which point there are cheaper options available. Still, I like it so much, I might buy another for my kitchen anyway.

Just recently I gave the USB port a go, and I've had some problems with that. First of all, the connection feels really lose, like the flashdrive could just fall right out. It jiggles around in there an awful lot. But the music played just fine, the sound was equal to that when played through any other way... until I realized it was skipping some songs. I came here to see if anyone else was having this problem, and apparently it doesn't recognize songs purchased from Amazon. Now, I get a lot of my songs from Amazon because I don't care much for iTunes either. I don't know why this happens or how I could fix it. It's not like I'm going to take this thing back because generally I like it, but I want it to play all my music too. I just want to let everybody know that it does have a problem with certain kinds of music through the USB. Four stars because really, everything else about it is perfectly fine, I'm just annoyed at this USB thing.

I bought this unit because it has the functions I wanted, and it's dimensions fit in my constrained space on my kitchen counter better than the Sharp, Teac, and JVC units that have my required features, even though I think all the other brands are probably better in many ways. This Philips unit sounds pretty good even with the included speakers at low volume, but I actually use the headphone out going the several other amplified speakers for really great sound. First the other good points, before I go into several aspects that are seriously stupid! It looks good, has a very nice display readable from across the room (when powered on; in standby it's not so easy to read), it has low standby power which if you know how much money you can waste powering things in standby is very important, it has a quality remote control, and can display lots of information about the MP3 tracks. Now for the stupid: 1) If you switch from USB to Tuner (or anythign else), and then switch back to USB, it doesn't remember where you were on the USB, it doesn't remember that you were in Shuffle mode, and takes a long time to "Read" the USB drive before starting over at the first file on the USB drive!?!?. 2) Same thing if you are in USB, and turn it off and back on!?!? 3) In order to navigate to a desired track (file) you must know either the Folder Number, which it assigns in some order, and the Track Number within the selected Folder, or what it considers to be the Overall Track Number (which is different and never displayed so you don't know what it is) for all files on the entire drive, because when navigating, it doesn't display the File Names of Folder Names, or anything else you would recognize (just the numbers). Once you stop navigating and stop on a track (file) it will display the file name ONCE only then display it's default screen of the track number within the folder, along with the elapsed time of the track, which it has now begun to play. 4) there is no way to navigate to another track while playing the current track, as soon as you start to navigate, it stops playing the current track, and starts playing a new one as soon as you stop navigating, instead of wating for you to press Play, like it should. 5) All the time a track is being played, instead of scrolling all the wonderful information it has on the screen, it only shows you the track number and elapsed time (like who cares?), and in order to see all the track information, you have to press the Display button, 1 or more times, and then it only scrolls the information ONE TIME, then back to track number and elapsed time!?!? 6) Every time you power the unit on, it goes back to having DBB (bass boost) ON, instead of OFF if that's how you left it. 7) Like others have mentioned, it won't play many MP3s from Amazon, but I was successful in getting almost all of them to work by converting them using Easy CD-DA Extractor into 128bps MP3s. That's enough said. I just received the product on Friday after ordering Tuesday evening. I was pretty excited about the prompt delivery. After I removed it from the box and set it up I immediately started playing all different types of music. After only 2hrs. of play the speakers started distorting. I never turned the volume past 16. I ordered this for our daughter for Christmas. Arrived last night and I had a chance to play with it a little bit to make sure it worked OK. I did not test all functions, as I did not have time... so please consider this a partial review. I just thought I'd post what I know right away in case anyone else is considering this as a Christmas gift this year.Easy to set up. All you have to do is plug the speakers into the main unit and plug in the power cable. Don't have to be an audiophile to figure that out. When you first turn it on, it asks you to initiate the auto-tuning of the FM presets. This takes a few seconds, during which it finds the strongest FM signals in your area and presets them. FM reception seemed pretty good actually, especially considering that I was doing this in our basement.
CD player seemed to work fine. The thing I was most interested in was USB playback. Here's the thing... if I were to buy a music player that integrates ONLY with the Apple iPod, then my daughter would have to actually own an iPod to use it. Personally, I think iPods are overrated, and I certainly couldn't justify buying one for over $200 for a 9 year old kid. A USB stick is much more economical, and if she loses it, no big deal, as they only cost a couple bucks. We're also buying her a cheap Coby MP3 player, which has a direct USB connection like a USB stick, so she can take her music with her or listen to it on the Philips Cube. So anyway, USB playback was important to me. I tested with my own USB stick, preloaded with a bunch of different songs, some downloaded from Rhapsody, some ripped by me, and some downloaded from Amazon. The Rhapsody songs and those I ripped played back just fine, but for some reason it would not recognize those from Amazon. Not sure what's up with that. After Christmas, I might try transcoding them to WMA files or different bitrate MP3s... I think there are free tools on the web to do this.
I was able to set the clock, but didn't have the time to play around with the alarm function. I'm sure she'll want to wake up to music, so I hope this works well...
Generally, the sound quality was decent. At this price range, you have to have realistic expectations. The speakers are not good if you try to turn the volume up very loud... the volume doesn't seem to go very loud to begin with, and they start to distort at higher volume levels. But at reasonable listening levels, the quality of the sound isn't bad. There's actually more bass than I expected. High frequencies are lacking, but the mid range sounds decent. There's a little bit of hiss at all times, but it's not too bothersome. Again, you have to have realistic expectations for a machine that does so much at this price range.
Anyway, for the price this is a pretty good deal. I don't know why more manufacturers don't make music players that take a USB stick. It's such a convenient and inexpensive media. I'd like to see Philips make an upscale version of the Cube... give it better speakers (make it a little bigger to accommodate those better speakers), a little more power, and wood cabinetry instead of plastic. I'm sure the price would be higher than the $99 they get for the current model, but you'd have a really nice little system.
I'll try to post more information after she opens it and gets it working this Christmas.

the only thing i could think of mention would be the packaging. But we all know how the manufactures love to seal things up so its almost impossible to open. But nothing a utility knife couldnt handle.
Performance of transfer will vary depending on your PC for me it only took like a minute to load 128mb worth of MP3, i also have 1 gig of ram and a fairly decent processor so dont be quick to judge because of other peoples computer problems.
also. the FM tuner isnt that bad, but i live in teh city. I really was expecting the FM to be nothin but static from reading these reviews, but to my pleasant suprise all 5 of my favorite stations came in clear and good nough to listen to.
definately a 5 star product and worth the buy.

I just got it and it already had the latest firmware (1.60)loaded. Software is easy to use and sounds great. After reading some of the reviews I was concerned about the radio reception but I bought it anyway because of it's size and because you can use 256MB SD cards. It picked up 5 of the 6 radio stations I listen to most often. Good enough for me since the tuner is just a plus, this is an MP3 player after all. Got it about a month ago. Added a 256MB memory card. A cheaper choice for Mac. I use it everyday, including while working out...fairly satisfied.Pros

1.iTunes always crash when I try to add a big group of songs. It also takes a while when you want to erase a song.
2.Every time I add a song the entire list is updated. And the process is slow.
3. I though that I would be able to search my playlist (rock, hip hop, classic, etc) on my mp3 but only gives me 2 choices. Play from a certain song or the entire list. Kind of a nightmare when you have more than 80 songs in it.
4. Cannot organize songs order after I added to the device. Even from the list that appears on the software.
5. Buttons have a slow response.
6. Radio reception kept really bad even after upgrade.

I have the Rio s50 (same product as the s35s, just different plastics and rechargable AA instead of the AAA)
I borrowed an iPod for month and fell in love with it but couldn't justify the expense, didn't like the scratch-sensitive case, would have to upgrade my Mac to get Firewire, and was a little leery of long-term reliability (hard drive and sealed battery).
Here's why the S10 is a great mp3 player...
MP3 audio quality is excellent to my untrained ear
Really small and solid, fits great in the hand
Front panel controls feel solid and give good tactile feedback
Excellent s50 padded belt holster includes a nice spring clip, protection for all 6 sides, and allows full control of unit (even recharging)...I haven't seen the s35s holster
iTunes is wonderful...lots of features for organizing music and the smart playlist feature chooses a random 128mb set of songs from my collection so I never need to decide what I'm going to transfer. Implemented using an iTunes "plugin" so I should be able to maintain compatibility with future releases of iTunes.
AA batteries are cheap and easy to find...in case I need to swap out the included NiHi AA cell on the road.
Software upgradable via iTunes
Some drawbacks:
iTunes integration is great but not perfect...you have to launch iTunes after connecing the Rio and if you try to drag too many songs on the Rio I got a series of errors and had to relaunch both Rio and iTunes.
Backlighting is a little dimmer than I expected but quite usable
Radio reception isn't great (most stations have a noticable hiss, even here in Silicon Valley)...just good enough to be useful but if this is going to irritate you get the cheaper S10 instead and live without it.
You probably want to get better headphones, the included set feels nice but my $25 Koss' sound a whole lot better.
128mb capactity is still not much space if you have a lot of medium bitrate MP3s and SD memory is a little more expensive than SmartMedia and CF (but seems to be the emerging standard). If you need to store >2hrs of songs, add an SD card (note: depending on market conditions, the S10 may offer a better price/capacity ratio...if it weren't for the Best Buy sale I would've bought an S10 with a 256mb SD card and given up the rechargable battery and radio/clock/stopwatch features)
Although earlier Rio players supported Audible.com content this model doesn't appear to handle this file format (dragging audible files from iTunes to the Rio is ignored)
Don't plan on using a standard USB cord, this unit uses a proprietary cord (since this unit doesn't mount as a USB drive this isn't a big deal for me since I'm only connecting to my iTunes machine anyway)

Hi,It's a functional alarm clock and does the basics well. Given it's footprint, I was
expecting the sound quality of it to be better. I may be spoiled because I have a Bose
iPod/iPhone system and it sounds great .. and is about the same size overall.
The iP90 has a very muffled/muddy tone to it.
Also, the machining on the front grill is a little cheap looking.
So, I'm kind of "meh" with this product.

I bought this alarm clock for one of my daughter's for Christmas. It's a fantastic product that has good sound for it's size, is an actual docking device, and comes with two different alarms with options for Weekday-only, Weekends, Every day, etc.The only problem, is that the dock broke (a room full of girls, don't ask me how, but I don't blame the device), so now I'm trying to get a replacement docking PCB for it. But other than that, worth every penny.
