AmazonBasics Alkaline Batteries (Pack of 20)

AmazonBasics AA Alkaline BatteriesI've avoided the big name brands for batteries for a couple of years now unless they were on sale. I never noticed a difference in battery life from any of those other brands (Kirkland, Maxell, etc), but I have noticed that these Amazon Basics batteries just don't last very long. Some examples:

I replaced the batteries in my wireless mouse in November with Amazon Basics AA. Yesterday (December 31) those batteries died and needed to be replaced again. Normally I go between 1-2 years, but this time I didn't even make 8 weeks.

My daughter got an LED snowman light at the beginning of December that took 2 AA batteries (used the Amazon batteries). In 4 weeks, I had to replace the batteries 3 times.

We rarely use our Wii, but I replaced the batteries in my Wii remotes with Amazon batteries at the end of October to play a few games with my daughter. We didn't play again until Christmas day, and the batteries were dead already.

I'm not ready to give up on these yet, but my current experience has not been that good. I got some Duracell AAs on a deal in December, so I am doing some comparisons now.

Never in a million years would I have thought these batteries would outperform Duracell Alkaline batteries. I read recently that a consumer magazine recommended buying batteries based on price and not brand name. My limited testing agrees with that advice.

AmazonBasics AAA alkaline batteries performed better than two types of Duracell Alkaline batteries, and was on par with Kirkland Alkaline brand. The bigger surprise is how well Enloop batteries performed in my testing. The Kirkland and AmazonBasics alkaline batteries were roughly 20% longer lasting than the Duracell alkaline batteries. Freshly fully charged Enloops (NiMH) performed 20% better than AmazonBasics and Kirkland Alkalines.

What can you say about these batteries? Yes they are AAA, they fit in devices that require this size battery, and they last a good long time. I wanted to do some accellerated testing, put the batteries through some heavy drain use in a controlled manner. Since I don't have a testing rig like the one NLee the Engineer uses to test batteries, I came up with a standard device a small electronic flash that uses two AAA batteries.

The test setup: load two batteries into the flash, when the ready light glowed, fire the flash. I counted how many flashes each battery type could make in five minutes. I repeated the test with fresh batteries twice for each brand / model of battery. At the end of the test the batteries were pretty warm and none of them were exhausted. A battery tester showed all the batteries were about 30% spent, so there was still a good bit of life left in them.

Qualitatively, the Kirkland and AmazonBasics Alkaline batteries recycled the flash very fast during the first minute of the test. Recycle times tapered off to a constant level after that. The Enloops (NiMH) seemed to deliver a rapid recycle time throughout the test.

Kirkland and AmazonBasics Alkaline batteries fired 97 times

Duracell Alkaline and Duracell Ultra Alkaline fired 77 times

Enloops (NiMH) fired 117 times

The consumer advice seems to be accurate, purchase AAA batteries based on the lowest per cell price you can find. Enloops are the best alternative, they are rechargeable and deliver great service (Sanyo Eneloop Ni-MH Charger and 8 Rechargeable AA and 4 Rechargeable AAA Batteries). If you do search out rechargeable batteries, the best advice in the world can be found in NLee The Engineer's reviews.

Amazon has gone into the battery business! These batteries are a great alternative to the more expensive name brands. And so far, the quality seems just as good. The price is great and it's even better if you use "Subscribe and Save". Also, they came in a nice box ("frustration-free" packaging) which fits just perfectly in my drawer (I just cut off the lid). It kept the batteries from rolling around in the drawer.

And, really, who doesn't want that famous Amazon smiley on their batteries?? lol

Batteries are commodities, and "premium" batteries that promise more power at a higher cost seems kinda silly to me. I found out about the Amazon brand of batteries by accident, but I'm glad I did -The battery life is good, the price is great, and the packagine is easy to open and is completely reclycable. I go through batteries a lot (peripherals for my computers, hand-held devices, etc) so I'm glad I found a set of affordable and dependable batteries. Don't forget to properly recycle your used batteries!

Some Amazon Basics items are well worthwhile, this one is not. I use Energizer and Duracell alkalines in my gear (digital camera, GPS, LED headlamp, flashlights (LED and incandescent), and couple of other devices), and thought I'd give these a try. Unfortunately these Amazon Basics AAs are consistently miserable in their longevity compared to the others mentioned. Too bad, seemed like a bargain but is not.

Could be worse, though: they could be DOA or promptly start leaking, but these have not been the case.

The item itself is pretty nice. The motion sensitive snooze and back light activator is a nice touch. The housing for the product is the glossy black plastic that is the trademark of iPods and their related accessories. The orange glow clock and lights is a nice change of pace from the ubiquitous blue that's been going around for the last few years. It even comes with a remote control, which can be stored on the back of the unit when you're not using it. A nice touch that is overlooked by most manufacturers.

The item allows for setting two alarms. In theory when the alarm goes off you can wave your hand over the top right of the unit and it'll engage snooze. Which, nicely, has a feature that allows you to set the snooze length. The wave hand snooze, did work. However, the unit I had, about 50% to 70% of the time the alarm would auto-snooze itself about 2 seconds after it began sounding. Another reviewer posted about this identical defect. So, I'm not sure if it is an overly sensitive motion detector, or what, but a two second alarm will be bad news for me in the morning :)

There are a few good reviews about the product, so if you want to try one out and hope its not defective, it's a nice product. I would have kept it, had it not been for the auto-snooze.

I have been using this about a week thus far and really enjoy it. I have an iPhone 3G and it works great for charging it, playing Pandora or MP3s, and as an alarm clock. The ability to float my hand over it to snooze is really nice. Since the buttons on top are dimmed until your hand is hovering over the device is nice in the evenings when you don't want extra gadget lights distracting you when it comes time to sleep.

It has 3 programmable buttons on it which is fine for me as I have only 2 FM radio stations I care about in my area. This may be an issue for others who have more they like to pan through. Also note that the remote control is for the iPod application on the iPhone and will not work in controlling Pandora.

I only gave this 4 stars for two reasons. One is how my phone fits into the device. Not as snug as I would like as when I am touching the screen, for instance in Pandora for ratings, it rocks back into the alarm clock instead of being held solid. I have tried the other docking cups too, no luck. The other reason is price. While the price is really good, especially compared to what you pay in other stores, I still think for the sound quality and volume you get could have been better.

Overall though, I am not disappointed and have had zero issues with it.

Edited 2-15-2012 down from 4 to 2 stars: I have noticed since upgrade to iOS4 that when place on the cradle instead of just charging it constantly tries to take over audio on the device. This has been occuring through several updates to my iPod over the past months and I am now updating the review accordingly. By taking over, the iPod indicates it is docked, switches inputs, and in turn gives off a buzzing sound equal to the volume on the device. Even if you change off the iPod input setting, it will change back in seconds. Even if you have AM or FM radio on, you still get the annoying buzzing sound on top of the station sounds. Because of this, I cannot charge overnight or while listening to music. Essently the iPod portion of this device is ruined for me and it is now just a clock-radio.

This item is great. I recommend it.

I bought an iHome alarm clock in an attempt to use our 5th generation iPod Video as the music source for the alarm sound. After a lot of messing around and testing and days of troubleshooting... it simply did not work. Supposed to, but didn't.

This Logitech Anytime unit is wonderful. Right out of the box I followed the simple quick-start instructions and was up and running 5 minutes later. But most alarm clocks are like that. The real test is getting the iPod as the alarm source. In the next 5 or 10 minutes I was able to test my iPod's use as an alarm source to wake up to my playlist's music. It works flawlessly.

There are two alarm time settings this unit remembers. Useful for two different people that need to get up at different times, or you can use the second alarm time as an "oh crap 1-hour later alarm really really get out of bed" for example. They're Alarm #1 and Alarm #2. Each one has it's own time setting as well as it's own source setting. So you could have alarm #1 set at 5am with the iPod as the alarm sound source (or the buzzer or the radio), and alarm #2 set at 8:30am with the buzzer as the alarm source (or the iPod, or the Radio). Both can use the same source so it's totally configurable.

The unit is really small. Smaller than a loaf of bread in a bag for example. It's speakers play the music really well. The sound is distinct and nice. I'm sure that there are people that will compare this unit's speakers with larger "iPod speaker systems" and conclude that they could be better, but you know what?... they sound just fine. No crackles, not a light tingy sound, not too rich and deep... just good enough to enjoy music and more than good as an alarm clock.

When the iPod is set as the source and the alarm goes off the unit will automatically look for a specific "Alarm 1" or "Alarm 2" playlist in your iPod. If it finds one of them (for the associated alarm in question) it'll play music in Shuffle mode from one of those playlists. So you can totally customize what music should be used as alarm music. If however you don't have those playlists on your iPod the unit will just resume playback from whatever playlist was last played from.

When the alarm time goes off, the music doesn't just abruptly start playing. The unit will start off the music quietly and slowly over the course of a few seconds increase more and more the volume until it's at the wake-up audio level.

The way to stop the alarm is really neat. You simply wave your hand over the top and a little sensor will detect the motion and shut off the music. It's also the way to illuminate the controls if you need to see them in the dark for some reason.

The unit has a backup 9volt battery that it uses for remembering the time settings if the power goes out. If the power does go out and the music source was set to iPod, the buzzer will sound instead because it won't have enough power to run/command the iPod.

If the unit has power from the wall it will charge your iPod, although if the iPod is actively being used to listen to music it won't charge until the iPod itself is off. The iPod mounts to the unit via the standard Apple Dock Connector slot on the bottom of the iPod itself. There are different snap-on mounting guides to help different iPod models all stay put and mount properly.

The orange lighted display is very clear and easy to read at night.

This unit has more features than what I need. I needed an iPod alarm clock and it's great! I've tossed my iHome unit because this Logitech Anytime unit works flawlessly. I recommend it.

Unfortunately, I got one with a defect. The alarm goes off for all of 2 seconds, then spontaneously stops. I tried it out multiple times, even unplugged it after I came across a review that mentioned the defect on iLounge. The review mentioned that unplugging it sometimes helps. Not here. Sat on phone with Logitech for an hour and they found the same defect in the one they had there! They said to return it to Amazon since I'd just bought it. Apparently, the defect isn't widely known yet so they haven't recalled the ones that don't work properly.

Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio (White)

Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio
  • Radio controlled clock automatically sets itself
  • Separate weekday alarm
  • 14 station presets-7 FM and 7 AM
  • Adjustable separate nap and sleep timers
  • Humane Waking System buzzer

I was looking for a high-quality alarm clock after about 12 years with an unimpressive Sony Dreammachine. This clock delivered on that front, and unlike most consumer electronics devices I've purchased in the past several years, it is clear that lots of thought was put into this device (and very little into the manual).

PROS:

There are tons of little nuances that the manual does not detail that I've discovered using the clock for a few weeks. For example the display can be dimmed with a dial on the bottom (which on my unit did not take effect until my alarm goes off the first time). The clock remains dimmed at your preset level, but goes to full brightness when the alarm goes off, making the clock easier to find. Combined with the pleasing blue light and the HWS (makes the alarm bell go from soft to loud) it's really nice to wake up to.

Another thoughtful touch is that alarm indicators only light within 24 hours of your alarm. Either alarm can be set to go off on particular days, with any combination of Su-Sa set for each alarm (i.e. alarm1 can be set for Monday, Thursday and Sunday, no weekday/weekend restrictions like some others). The alarm indicators however only light up when your alarm will ring the next morning. Very nice.

Other functions like the snooze, nap timers, etc. all work well. Like most alarms you need some time to figure out how it works, but after a few mornings most functions were intuitive.

The radio functions well, and pulls in way more stations than the Dreammachine. The speaker is fine, that is to say neither exceptionally good or exceptionally poor. If I want the ultimate music experience, I have an expensive stereo for that.

The clock is a true atomic time clock (not just a "preset" clock like many others). I don't know all the nuances of atomic cock synchronization, but the weather and location of the antenna seem to affect the two atomic clocks I have at home. Try moving the antenna towards the window if you have problems.

CONS

It is nicer than average plastic and construction, but still not going to win any design awards. I can't figure out why all alarm clock designs are frozen in 1992.

The manual was clearly written by a bunch of engineers. It is no nonsense, and explains how to set/use everything, but does not mention any of the usability features I noted above. For example if it's Monday and you set an alarm for thursday, You might wonder why the alarm indicators do not all light up. No mention at all in the manual. I thought the clock was broken since the dimmer did not function until the first time an alarm went off. Again, no mention in the manual of what turned out to be a very nice feature, and one I almost returned the clock for!

Another example is the unwieldly "Time Machine" antenna for the atomic clock. It is big and odd looking, but fits nicely to the back of the clock. Again, no mention in the manual save for a single line drawing.

When I initially plugged the clock in, all kinds of crytic numbers flashed on the display while it synced the time, again, no mention of what was happening or why in the manual. The manual does tell you how to DO everything, but does not explain WHY certain things work the way they do, or explain the various nice features someone clearly took time to think through.

Overal a great buy, especially for something you'll likely use every day for 5-15 years. I would like to see a better manual, autodimming of the display (it is BRIGHT when set to max), Sangean using a designer that is somewhat current, and perhaps a user manual rewrite, other than that, this clock works very well and will be on my nightstand for years to come.

I agonized over what to put on my nightstand (everything from Bose to Timex) and am very happy with my choice.

Buy Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio (White) Now

As a previous owner of the Sangean RCR-1 I was a bit disapointed to see that many features were omitted. I realize that this clock is really based on the RCR-2 and not the model that I'm comparing it against. That said my observations on this clock are as follows.

1. The new clock display is a vast improvement over the old one. It's very easy to read from any angle and it can be manually dimmed. However I feel that there still exists room for improvement with the display. I feel that Sangean should have included a photosensor to automatically adjust the display brightness according to ambient lighting conditions. I've had this option on many other clocks costing much less and it's an awesome feature to have. I also feel that they should have kept the outgoing models display size. The larger display was able to show more information at a glance. For instance the RCR-1 and RCR-2 were able to display the date while the alarm's are active. The RCR-22 will not do this. With the new unit you must press the date button to display the information. Also missing is the dual color display of the RCR-1. When the alarm on the RCR-1 activated the display would change color from blue to amber. That feature no longer exists on this model which was a bit of a disapointment.

2. The lack of a battery backup is a serious oversight. I am aware that it has a super capacitor which will hold the time for up to an hour in the event of a power failure. However, a battery backup will hold the time for up to a year AND still be able to sound the buzzer alarm during a power failure. Sony has this feature as well as many other brands on the market today.

3. Another serious oversight is the lack of Humane Waking System (HWS)when the alarm is set to radio mode. This clock features HWS in buzzer mode only. My old RCR-1 has HWS in radio mode and I really miss having the radio volume gradually ramp up to ease me out of my slumber. This new radio simply turns on the radio to the preset volume and blasts you awake.

4. This clock now features a much improved method to activate or deactivate the alarm. You simply push the alarm button and hold it for a few seconds to activate the alarm. The button will illuminate red to show the alarm is active. It also has a redundant indicator in the display.

5. Sangean is known for their excellent radio reception and this unit lives up to the hype. It easily pulls in distant stations and delivers drift free reception. The sound quality is above average for a clock radio and will not disapoint.

Now for the items on my wish list for a future product.

1. Add an HD Radio Tuner. HD radio is catching on and there are a lot of good stations that this can't receive.

2. Add Radio Data System (RDS) to the radio.

3. Add NOAA weather radio to alert you of possible severe weather

4. Photo sensor display dimmer to automatically adjust to ambient light

5. Battery Backup (Sangean this is a must have feature!)

6. HWS for the radio mode of the alarm

7. Larger display

8. Stereo speakers

9. CD Player.

10. Improved alarm programming to allow for different times to be set for each day of the week. This clock does allow you to program a random day pattern giving it more flexibility than most but it could be taken to the next level.

Heck as long as I'm wishing why not put all these features in a table radio and you'll have a winner.

Conclusion, This radio adds a much improved display that makes it easier to live with than the previous models. However several features have been ommitted that should have been left in place. For this reason I am unable to give it more than 3 stars. Most people will be perfectly happy with this clock radio as it is. As for me I'm always looking for that elusive clock radio that address ALL of my needs so the search continues.

Read Best Reviews of Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio (White) Here

I checked out a lot of alarm clocks and this one stood out above the rest. What was initially important to me was an alarm clock that had a 'digital tuner' so the frequency wouldn't drift resulting in no alarm sounding. Not only does this clock meet this need, but it also will default to the buzzer if the station fades or goes off the air!

I also wanted a clock that had both an up AND down button to adjust time. This clock also meets this criterion, however, the capacitor backup, the self correcting time feature and its dual alarm system minimizes the need for adjustments. It also has a button to reset the clock to DST and back. Why doesn't every clock have this?

Soon after I received the clock, I could tell that a lot of thought had gone into its design. In addition to the features listed, I found some nice surprises. It's meant to be operated in the dark and by a sleepy head. When you want to put it in snooze mode, you can hit ANY button on the top to activate it. When you want to turn it off, you can easily find the 'off' button in the dark using the side 'posts' as a guide. Each alarm button will light when that specific alarm will go off within 24 hrs (along with displaying the alarm time) assuring you that all is set. And that's nice, because with it's multi-day and dual alarm system, you rarely need to set it.

The five minute snooze time is a bit short for me. An ajustable snooze time would be nice addition. I would also prefer a digital volume control versus the knob to avoid accidental volume changes.

But overall, it looks great, it out performs the competition and has my recommendation. I've actually invited a few friends to my bedroom to show off....my new alarm clock!

Want Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio (White) Discount?

I've done a ton of research regarding all of the atomic clock radios out on the market. I can safely say, without a doubt, that the RCR-22 is the best atomic clock radio out on the market today, especially with the vast number of features that it has.

Below are some of the primary features that the RCR-22 has to offer:

Display Features

The display background is a dark blue color with white text the display makes for an easy read from a wide variety of angles. (The prior version of this clock, the Sangean RCR-2 Digital Atomic Clock Radio with Dual Alarms, which had an orange background and black text was very difficult, and at times impossible, to read at certain angles).

The RCR-22 also has an adjustable brightness level for the display screen.

Clock Features

The RCR-22 features an atomic clock that automatically synchs up the date and time every hour. Don't get confused with clocks claiming to automatically set themselves several clocks claim that they automatically set themselves, but it's not really the case it's just a gimmick. I, like several others, had been tricked into thinking that our clocks would automatically set themselves this was not the case when the new Daylight Saving Time rules took place and our clocks did not automatically set themselves. The RCR-22 really does set itself via an atomic radio signal.

Alarm Features

This clock features two independent alarms. Each alarm gives you the ability to select the days of the week that you wish the alarms to wake you (i.e. The first alarm could be set for Mon, Wed, Fri at a certain time and the second alarm could be set for Tue and Thu at a different time, etc.)

The alarm offers a Humane Waking System (the alarm gets progressively louder rather than jolting you out of bed)

Adjustable alarm buzzer sound level

You can wake up to the alarm buzzer or to a specific AM or FM station

Like most clocks, the RCR-22 offers a snooze function

Radio Features

Many of the clocks out on the market today seem include a radio just so that it can be called a clock radio often times the radio quality tends to be horrible and the reception tends to be not so great. The RCR-22 is a fantastic radio it sounds great and it has excellent reception (you should expect a good radio from a company that is best known for its radio products).

The radio offers 7 FM presets and 7 AM presets (not a lot of clock radios offer this feature).

Power Backup Feature

Most clocks tend to have a battery-powered backup system (to retain the time and alarm memories during power outages). The RCR-22 offers something quite different it offers a super capacitor that retains time and alarm memories for up to 1 hour (without having to use batteries). This is a very nice feature, however, it does have some drawbacks as I will explain further below.

Miscellaneous Features

Headphone Output Socket to privately listen to the radio using your headphones

Aux Input Socket to listen to an external CD player or MP3 player through the clock radio speakers

Adjustable Nap timer (10-120 minutes)

Adjustable Sleep Timer (15-120 minutes)

Drawbacks

The only possible drawback I could find regarding the RCR-22 is the Super Capacitor power backup if the power outage lasts for more than an hour, all of your settings, including the alarms and radio presets will be gone. Also, if by some strange coincidence, the alarm is scheduled to go off during a power outage, the alarm will not go off.

My only suggestion for future generations of this clock is extend the super capacitor time to 3 hours (this should keep most of us feel calmer). Also, more importantly, have the alarm go off during power outages.

If Sangean takes care of the suggestions above, they would not only have the best atomic clock radio, but arguably the perfect atomic clock radio.

I'm a very proud owner of the RCR-22 the best atomic clock radio out there right now.

I got this atomic clock because I wanted to replace my older clock that would automatically adjust to the OLD Daylight Savings Time schedule.

Well, I wasn't disappointed as this radio adjusted to the new schedule with no problem.

The only problem I have is that you have to turn up the brightness on the display during the daytime in order to see the time from across the room. But then at bedtime, the display brightness is then too high and has to be turned down again. A reviewer mentioned that he wished the clock came with a photo sensor (auto dimmer). Now I know what he was talking about.

Every other feature about this radio is great as mentioned by the other reviewers.

Here's some additional info that I don't think has been covered yet:

The atomic signal sensor "capsule" has a 32" extension wire so that you can mount it away from the radio if necessary.

The radio has a 41" external FM antenna wire.

To test the "super capacitor", I unplugged the radio for 3 hours and to my surprise the radio still kept my alarm and tuner settings!

Spongebob Treasure Chest Clock Radio

Sony ICF-C212 FM/AM Clock Radio with Full Power Back-up (Black)

Sony ICF-C212 FM/AM Clock Radio with Full Power Back-up
  • Simple and compact FM/AM clock radio
  • Snooze and sleep modes for more individualized control of alarm and radio
  • Full power back-up uses 9V battery to maintain clock and alarm operations
  • .9" green LED numerals are easy to see
  • Alarm indicator confirms alarm set

What can I say, it's an alarm clock, it does what it's supposed to do. Can't expect too much from the radio. My only rant is the battery. BATTERY BATTERY BATTERY! This will not accept your regular 9V Batteries because it requires a specific type ( IEC code 6F22 to be exact). The specification is listed in the manual and on the battery lid. This can only be a problem if you so desire battery backup power. These batteries are Heavy Duty Industrial type and will set you back at least $5 per versus the buck something of the regular 9v batteries. Most stores don't even carry these. Googling these yielded returns from the UK and China. Regular 9V Engergizers and Duracells have IEC codes of 6LR61. My sister and I have two of these clock radios and have tried various Battery Brands to no avail. We haven't tried 6F22 or 8F22 (more common), though. Hope this helps.

Buy Sony ICF-C212 FM/AM Clock Radio with Full Power Back-up (Black) Now

Pros: Small footprint, stylish black color with silver buttons. The buttons are firm to press and, "drive" nicely. Mechanical alarm set indicator for radio or alarm wake-up is nice. Large time numbers on display. The tuning wheel is stiff so there's no accidental retuning of the radio. Good reception. Great, big snooze bar target!

Cons: Short power cord, no dimmer switch (bright at night). Volume wheel is easily adjusted, should be as stiff as the tuning wheel IMO. Mechanical alarm indicator is tough to read in low light.

Summary: Good clock radio, worth the money for it's overall functionality.

This clock does not have a lighted alarm on function. It has a red painted indicator that switches back and forth according to the alarm on/off switch. If you like a lighted indicator for your alarm, pass on this one. It does have good radio sound.

Want Sony ICF-C212 FM/AM Clock Radio with Full Power Back-up (Black) Discount?

A great little radio for the price. The sound is terrific for such an inexpensive radio, but it does not come with a light dimmer, nor does it have a second alarm.

The clock radio works reliably and FM and AM radio reception is very good. Sound quality is good, too. The only flaw is that there is no LED to indicate that the alarm is switched on. You will need to turn on the light and double check to make sure the alarm is on.

Nokia 5310 Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 MP Camera, MP3/Video Player, MicroSD Slot--International Versi

Nokia 5310 Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 MP Camera, MP3/Video Player, MicroSD Slot--International Version with No WarrantyI've had this phone for a while now and have been very pleased. It seems to be much more durable than the two Moto Razr's I had previously. I like the improved alarms. I have my M-F alarm which lets me sleep in on weekends, reminders for my weekly and monthly appointments, and more. My favorite feature is being able to use any music file as a ring tone or alarm. I was unable to do this with both the Moto Razr's I had. I can transfer any of my MP3s to my phone over USB. The 1 GB storage is more than enough for me, but you can easily add more with the MicroSD card. This phone has actually replaced my iPod now! It doesn't have GPS and I can't watch TV, but I also didn't want to spend the extra money for the iPhone. I don't see any reason not to recommend this phone to anyone, it is very durable (I'm an avid rock climber) and its battery lasts about a week per charge depending on use (I talk about 3k minutes per month). I'm very satisfied with my Nokia Xpress Music.

The Nokia 5310, aka "The Music Xpress", is one nifty little phone! Sure, it's no iPhone, but if you want something that got just about as many bells and whistles for a little less money, you want this phone.

The 5130 is available in purple, orange, red and blue (I own the purple). It's very thin and small, but fits easily in the palm of your hand and doesn't give the impression it's going to fall apart if you look at it cross-eyed.

The buttons are raised up just a bit. The display is bright and vibrant. If you have T-Mobile service with this phone, you'll find it can handle the My Favorites plan just fine, with nice little icons and customizable options fo each person.

The phone has several nifty features, including a 2 megapixel camera that takes good-to-very-good quality pictures. It can also function as a video camera, doing both sound and image. There's no flash or self-portrait mirror, but you can make do. The screen acts as a view finder, of course. There's also four different levels of zoom and several different video effects (like black and white, negative, false color, etc). There's a nifty little mini-USB port you can use to move your files to a computer (assuming you have a cable. Thankfully the phone comes with one).

There's also the usual selection of programs, like a calculator, alarm clock, organizer, etc. The system also comes with a few game demos, none of which are particularly memorable.

Ah, but you want to know about the biggie, right? You want to know all about the music capability!

Well, this phone doesn't disapoint. There's external music controls and an external volume control. You can turn it up loud enough to annoy the people next door if you really try. There's also a headphone jack that, thankfully, allows for normal headphones to be used. I have a neat little set I got on a Delta flight, and they work just fine.

When I bought the phone it came with the USB cable I mentioned earlier, as well as a stereo hands-free headset with a detachable mic, and, joy of joys, a 1 gigabyte memory card! That's a really nice thing to have! I've got quite a bit of music on mine and it isn't even close to being filled. Tiny card, too. About the size of a fingernail.

Overall there's no real reason not to recommend this phone. It's sleek and stylish, has a great price point, comes with plenty of goodies and plays music very, very well. It's worth every penny I paid for it, and that's not something I can often say!

I am not a cell phone snob but wanted one that was small, could hold music, and be able to take quality pictures and video. This phone has all of that. I was able to download almost 100 songs and 100s of pictures onto the phone which is impressive because it is so small. I don't know how they could make the phone more efficient which is why this model isn't much different than the newer versions. The only problem that I have with it is that it is so tiny that it is very easy to lose so make sure you have a case for it.

I have been true to Nokias ever since I started using mobiles and every time I get a new one I am pleasantly surprised. 5310 is no exception to this rule.

5310 offers everything I expect from a Nokia sleek design (slim and fairly light), nice colours (nothing too flashy), sturdy materials and easy to operate software.

The screen is just the right size to use the internet and the connection is just OK to suit my needs that is checking information such as weather, movies, rates of exchange etc. I wouldn't recommend it, however, for reading long newspaper articles, however, the letters are a little to small.

The musical part is well done (the mobile even comes with a pair of small loudspeakers which is a very nice idea in theory but nothing very practical in everyday use) and I can't help but appreciate the handy controls on the outside. This Nokia basically made my ipod a fashion accessory why carry a mobile and an ipod if mobile offers most of ipod's functions?

There is also a camera good enough to take pictures which will show on the screen to let you know who is calling and snapshots but their quality is only a little above acceptable so don't throw away your camera before you check it out thoroughly and a radio, a nice addition (headphones, naturally included) although you should be prepared to recharge the battery quite often if you're addicted to listening all the time.

In short if you're shopping for small, sleek, light mobile phone with all the basic functions plus some added musical ones, this is your perfect choice. It's hard to get anything better for the money.

iHome iA5 App-Enhanced 30-Pin iPod/iPhone Alarm Clock Speaker Dock

iHome iA5 App-Enhanced 30-Pin iPod/iPhone Alarm Clock Speaker Dock
  • Supports most iPhone and iPod models with Universal Dock Connector
  • App-enhanced speaker dock for the iPhone OS that combines an interactive app with a bedside alarm clock
  • Wake to iPhone/iPod or buzzer, with additional alarms and features available via iHome+Sleep app
  • Sure Alarm battery backup maintains clock setting and ensures alarm wake time in case of power failure
  • iHome's Reson8 speaker chambers and specially designed high-end drivers deliver clarity, depth and power

I was looking for an alarm clock/charger for my iPhone and finally settled on this one. Partly intrigued by the fact it works in conjunction with an app, I wanted to see how the full package would operate.

It's a little bigger in person than I expected it to be so I might have preferred a smaller device, but that's not a deal breaker. The only other complaint I have is that when the device is working with the app, there's a large button on the top that turns on and emits a rather bright night light that I wish I had the option to turn off. It's not so bright as to keep me awake, but I happen to like a dark room when I sleep, so it's more light than I'm used to. Still, not a deal breaker and I'm thinking about just putting a sticker on top of it or something to dim it down.

The speaker gives out good sound quality, and you can manually control the clock's brightness even to where you can turn the display of completely if you prefer. The app is a nice touch and has some cool features like customizing the music/sounds you sleep and wake-up to, plus about as many alarm options as you want to set.

The buttons on the front are easy to manage and most of the clock's overall management (setting of the time, etc.) is done through the iPhone app, but there are buttons on the back that allow you to manage the clock that way as well.

One thing I was worried about was whether it would work with my iPhone's case on since I've read about other devices that don't fit the phone if you have a case on it. Thankfully this one fits just fine (I have an ifrogz case).

All in all, I'm happy with it.

Buy iHome iA5 App-Enhanced 30-Pin iPod/iPhone Alarm Clock Speaker Dock Now

I wanted an iPod alarm clock and the iA5's "App-enhanced" nature looked good, so I bought it. I wish I hadn't.

Unfortunately, the app is very poor. There are some nice ideas in it, with "sleep cards" and "wake cards" to handle different situations, but the app is so complicated that it is nearly useless. When you're tired and want to go to sleep, you're not likely to want to fumble around an iPod app hunting for the right settings.

As other reviewers have noted, the iA5 is bright, both the clock display (even at its dimmest setting) and the power button. So unless you like sleeping next to a spotlight, stay away. The iPod is in the way when you try to reach for a button. The device looks like it has two speakers, but actually only has one (my fault for not reading the fine print.)

The App-Enhanced Clock Radio is a good idea, but the iA5 is a poor execution of that idea. Hopefully, iHome will redesign this device and re-write the app with user-friendliness in mind.

The iHome iA5 is basically an alarm clock that hooks up with your iPod, iPod Touch or iPhone. What it isn't, first of all, is a radio alarm clock --if you don't have an iPod or iPhone connected to it, the only alarm option is a buzzer, so if you're looking for an iPod/radio alarm clock, this isn't it. However, if you connect an iPod or iPhone, it will let you fall asleep to, and wake up to, whatever track your device is set to. I find this a wonderful function, and don't particularly miss the radio, so in that sense it's a good device.

However, the iA5 has a couple of glaring design mistakes. First of all, the iPod/iPhone connector is a little rectangular block sticking out from the front of the device. As a result, your iPod/iPhone will block the buttons on the device most notably the snooze button. So, when you're waking up and maybe still a bit clumsy, you need to maneuver around the iPod/iPhone to press it. That's annoying. Secondly, the connector for the iPod/iPhone isn't too sturdy. Mine actually moves a bit, and when at first I thought this was a defect, so I went to check others in the store and yep, they all move. It doesn't feel sturdy at all, as if it could break off if you accidentally bump it or press your iPod down too hard. Thirdly, there are 4 buttons at the back of the device (to set the time etc.) that are just plain impossible to read unless you lift the device up, because those buttons' text is pointed downward. It's tremendously annoying. E.g. one of those buttons actually syncs your alarm clock with your iPod/iPhone a great idea but it's impossible to see which of the 4 buttons does that without lifting the entire thing. So, those are 3 tremendously annoying design flaws that knocked 2 stars off this device's rating for me.

Otherwise, there's not much to complain about. The clock numbers "shine" from the speaker, which looks very neat, and you can choose 3 levels of brightness for the clock (great if you have sensitive eyes). The sound quality is decent don't expect Bose quality, but for an alarm clock it's definitely acceptable with solid bass and treble levels.

Finally, there's the "app-enhanced" part of the device, which I wasn't able to test as I only have a "classic" iPod that doesn't do apps like the iTouch and iPhone do. As I understand it, it allows you to connect to Facebook (which, of course, you could do without the alarm clock too) and tracks sleep stats (which could be interesting, I guess, but wouldn't be a reason to buy the device for me).

So in the end, you have a decent iPod/iPhone alarm clock with a striking look but a few very annoying design flaws. I would definitely recommend heading to a physical store to check it out before ordering it, because there are many other options for this type of device, and this one frankly has some flaws that may be deal-breakers for you. Still, the price is definitely right, so if you're willing to overlook a couple of clumsily placed buttons, this could be the one for you.

UPDATE: 8/28/2010 I ended up taking this product back to the store, because it stopped charging my iPod. I think the little block that holds the iPod probably got loose. I've exchanged this iHome for the iHome ip92, which has the same functionality but none of the design flaws the buttons aren't blocked by the iPod, and the iPod docks at the top of the device rather than at the front. The sound quality is also MUCH better. Finally, it includes an AM/FM radio. So, if you're considering the iHome iA5, I would strongly recommend checking out the ip92 instead.

I purchased this as a mothers day gift from the kids for my wife. She had a twenty year old Sony alarm clock that still worked. Good thing, as after two days the the iHome would no longer charge the iPhone and it would give a message saying that the iHome was an incompatible device. I tried all the troubleshooting steps and no luck. I know it was not the phone as we tried two others and we are pretty sure it is a bad connection in the dock connector. I have sent it back for an exchange as the marketplace seller charges a restock fee otherwise but I have a feeling that this clock will not last 20 day let alone twenty years.

The speaker was okay, good enough for it's purpose but don't expect it to sound like a Bose radio. We had no alarm problems for the two days it worked.

Coby CX-53 AM/FM Radio with Digital Display & Alarm Clock

Coby CX-53 AM/FM Radio with Digital Display & Alarm Clock
  • Ultra slim compact design
  • Sensitive AM/FM tuner
  • LCD with digital display
  • Built in wide range speaker
  • High performance telescopic antenna

I bought this unit, along with another pocket radio, to fill up an order. I planned to use it around the house or put it in my emergency supply kit. The digital display, and clock & alarm aspect sounded interesting, and for $9, it couldn't be a big mistake. The radio is really small, which is fine, and takes AAA batteries. That's OK too, but they don't hold as much energy as AAs. The big problem is the tuning. It has a digital display but it is not a digital tuner. It uses a regular thumbwheel on the side, and the position of that dial is indicated on the display as a digital frequency. The resolution of the tuning is very poor: a small displacement of the knob results in a large tuning change, so you have to be very dexterous to tune in a station. Plus, in my unit, the displayed numbers did not correspond to the real station frequencies; it was miscalibrated. The display is hard to read in daylight, and there is no backlight, so it's no good for beside the bed. Other than that, it seems to work OK for a

I just cannot describe in words how I feel about this radio. I have wanted one for our motor home for so long and I finally got it as a Christmas gift. The built in modulator is the most inventive idea I have ever heard of (and works like a charm!). The reception has been exceptional and the variety is just unreal. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this little piece of equipment. The only reason it got 4 stars is because I need the boombox and cannot find it yet! I would definitely recommend this to anyone!

The radio works great but is a pain in the neck when changing the time or the alarm settings (hold down this button while pressing that button). My problem (and I think I'm a reasonably intelligent person) is that, since I don't have to change time or alarm settings with any regularity, I can never remember which of the numerous buttons to hold down and press. Therefore, I have to look at the instruction book each time.

I had a very bad experience. The clock/radio box was all beat up. It appeared that this item had been used before. When I opened the box there were scratch marks on the CD player at the top of the radio. I asked for a return authorization and had to pay to ship the item back. Very expensive. I do not believe that this company is a good company to work with.

I bought this to replace a Cambridge Soundworks entertainment center knowing full well that I was making a huge step down and the sound and options would be much less superior, but I no longer needed such a "high end" clock radio for my bedroom anymore. I was looking to replace my system with a simple iPod docking station with alarm clock radio. However following the initial set-up, the AM/FM radio is not a strong tuner and fails to stay tuned regardless of where you position the antenna.

PROS: The dimmer has 3 settings and the lowest one is excellent for night time. The clock readout is a good readable size. The sound is perfectly fine for the money.

CONS: The control buttons are poor quality and I would expect them to break in less than a year. If you are a Normandy landing veteran, you will be reminded of the "cricket" clacker every time you depress the volume and tuning buttons. Pretty annoying. The other buttons and lettering are too small and poorly marked. The paint on the "clock/set" button was almost unreadable.

I will return this unit after trying it out for a week.

I read the reviews of this product and decided to but it despite the negative vibes since the price seemed right despite imperfections. However, I returned it because the clock wouldn't stay on time. It seemed like I kept having to set the time up by a few minutes here and there. My final draw happened after being out of town for a weekend and coming back to a clock that was two hours behind, despite having back up batteries in place. Other than this malfunction, it really seemed like a great clock for the price, however I know I'm not the only one with complaints about it simply not working. I ordered a iHome iP42 today, the only iPhone compatable alarm clock apple sells on their website. Great reviews too, but much cheaper on amazon. Just beef up and spend the extra money to save time and inconvenience.

El articulo perfecto. Me gusto bastante. Lo recomiendo 100%. Es de buena calidad. Si volvería a comprarle a este vendedor.
