When I first got this unit, I thought it didn't work at all. I couldn't get the radio to turn on, or get most of the unit to function properly. It wasn't the Raptor, it was the horrible instructions! I sat on the back porch playing with it and figured out how it was supposed to work. Seems the functions were activated, but they have to be turned off BEFORE you can turn on the radio (*AM/FM/Weather) The unit should have been set to off. Then you can turn on the functions, or the Radio, but not at the same time. Once I turned off the functions, I turned on the radio without a problem. In the off position, it shows some info on the main screen, like the time, etc. The solar charger doesn't work on my Palm phone, but the solar charger does work well on keeping the unit fully charged. My unit seems well built and took it on my first camping trip and it worked well. It saved a lot of space and I am quite happy with it. Eton really does need to make a decent instruction manual and they might start by putting one on-line.

I bought this even though I couldn't find any reviews because I figured it was worth a shot due to all the features it had. I really wanted to like it but I was completely disappointed. Right away I noticed the antenna was loose. I figured ok, not that big a deal and went into the quick setup book. Everything seemed easy enough to set. It was only until I got to the full instruction book that I started to get frustrated. Contrary to how this thing looks, it is not rugged at all. Right away they tell you that it's not splash proof or can even be used in high humidity. Also if you think you're getting a practical solar charger, radio, compass, etc you're wrong. They tell you takes 18 hours to get a full charge on the battery! And if you think you're getting a decent radio you'd be wrong as well. There were no instructions on how to start the radio! Not in the quick setup book or in the main instruction manual. The simply tell you turn on the radio! I played with it for an hour and could not get the radio to work! The instructions on how to power on and off the device were the same as the radio. The simply tell you to press the power button to turn the device on and off. I tried holding the power button down for 3 seconds, then 10 seconds and nothing! Great work Eton! You should stick to making Red Cross emergency radios. If you want a solar charger get a solio classic. If you want a radio get any old one with a hand crank. If you want an altimeter, barometer, thermometer, compass go to campmor.com or REI and you'll be able to find a clip on style device that does all that. I'm never buying another eton product unless I get the chance to check it out in person.

This product arrived in fine condition. It has a rugged anodized rubber outside and it is splash-proof NOT water-proof (they do not claim it to be water-proof).

Pros:

-Great radio with great sound

-Compass works accurately once set

-Barometer is actually accurate, along with temperature.

-You can save radio frequencies that stay even if battery dies

-Solar panel is extremely sensitive and is great at charging, though will take about 18 hours to charge from empty (though it can be charged via USB)

-Aluminum clip is sturdy

-Illuminated background and clear screen make reading the screen easy on the eyes

-Flashlight is VERY strong, despite my initial worries (a metal strip built in ensures this)

-Can charge phones and iPods, and can be used as an external speaker for your iPod or other MP3 player

-Aesthetically pleasing (to me anyhow); it looks rugged and cool (not to mention I've dropped it several times with no resulting problems)

Cons:

-Antenna is a little flimsy-feeling, though has held its own through rigorous use

-Solar panel takes about 18 hours to charge (but come on, you can charge via USB, so even WHEN you go with it, you can use it until the next day, and just leave it in the sun to get back to full)

-Speaker may sound a bit tinny at times

-Only splash-proof, not water-proof (though I've taken it into heavy rain and never experienced any problems)

-Battery dies quickly if charging a cell phone or iPod (though most products that do multiple things do die quickly)

-Poor instructions (though not incompetent; I was able to figure everything out with them)

-User interface could have been made more laymen (though I am not a simpleton and am able to figure out everything)

Despite these cons, I must still give it a 5 star, for I paid for it knowing what I would get, and it works just as instructed (not to mention Eton's fantastic customer service). I love this thing and take it with me wherever I go.

I ordered this after seeing a review in Wired. It would not charge. Tried USB charging to computer, AC outlet and solar. Would not take a charge so returned it for another one. Same problem. Might be a good product but getting two bad ones in a row was enough for me.

I previously owned the Eton Scorpion and I've been watching the prices for this Raptor model. When it got down to $58 shipped for the green accented model I made the purchase. After reading the reviews here I was expecting a few issues, but after receiving the Raptor and putting it to the test I found it to be better than I expected. Without reading the instructions it's not easy to figure out. You couldn't just hand it to someone and expect them to use it. Reading the directions is a must! One problem with the directions is they don't mention the importance of the FN (function) button until page 7. It needs to be the first feature understood in my opinion. The FN button is used to switch from the standby mode (where the radio can be turned on and off), to the other eight features (time settings, temperature, altimeter, etc.).

Radio receives well in all bands. The power button is sufficiently recessed to prevent accidental activation.

The edges of the casing are rubber armored. When resting it on a flat surface in most positions only the rubber will touch.

The display is backlit and automatically turns on with any key press of the front buttons. Backlight remains on for 10 seconds after the last key press.

The bottle opener works and in my test didn't scratch. I was a little hesitant to try it as who wants to put a scratch on a new radio.

The flashlight consists of three 5mm LEDs with a reflector and optics to produce a focused moon beam. Not bright, but meant to be power efficient which is what you want in a device like this. The button is a simple on/off forward clicky, meaning you can use it as a momentary light without clicking it on first.

The Li-Ion battery is definitely a step up from the previous Scorpion radio's NiMH battery. Li-Ion has a low self discharge rate and holds a storage charge far longer than NiMH. The lack of a crank to recharge the internal battery isn't an issue to me. I've had crank devices before and find they are way too much effort for what they can do. The Scorpion's crank took over five minutes of cranking just to raise my iPhone's battery level up 1%, and the Scorpion's solar panel couldn't charge an external device. The Raptor has no problem charging my iPhone from it's internal battery, and this can be done overnight. Basically you can charge the Raptor in the day's sun, and slowly transfer that power to your phone while you sleep at night. That feature alone makes this a valuable tool when there is no other way to charge your phone.

As far as other issues mentioned in other reviews I tend to see it differently.

The antenna really isn't flimsy. It's solid until you extend the last half inch revealing the pivot point. This type of antenna will normally have just a little play in it when fully extended.

The speaker doesn't sound tinny to me, but keep in mind it's what you'd expect for the size.

The concern that the solar recharge time being 18 hours (more than the sun is up in a day) isn't such a problem when you think about it. It's not likely you'll run this radio down to empty in a day. The radio itself is supposed to last 30 hours continuously on low volume. Most likely all you'll need is a few hours of sun each day to top off the battery from the previous day (and also maybe night) use. I could see if you charged your phone overnight the Raptor will probably need at least a full day of sunlight to get back to 100%.

All things considered I really like the Raptor. I think Eton put a lot of thought into it and packed it with so may features it became a little too complex for the casual user. For me the Raptor will be a backup radio receiver, a backup phone charger, a backup flashlight, a backup compass, an external speaker for my iPhone, a replacement for my travel clock (it has two alarms are they are sufficiently loud), and I suppose a backup bottle opener. Oh, it's also nice to be able to check the temperature at your campsite. You might think of the Raptor as the Swiss army knife of outdoor electronic gadgets.

I purchased this unit for my vacation home and it fits the bill perfectly. The sound fills the living room very nicely. There are several equalizer settings and the unit is put together very well it doesn't feel cheap. I also have the Bose system at my house at home and this unit compares very favorably to it for half the price. The only drawback that I have is that my ipod is a 1st generation and it didn't recognize it. My wife's iphone and my kids itouch worked perfectly. In order to get my ipod to work, I purchased a male to male connector for the auxiliary input in the unit and the headphone jack in the ipod. The ipod still has to sit in the cradle but it won't charge the unit. It ran on battery power but played for 5+ hours with no issues.

I bought one for each kid.

At first, I tried the larger SC-HC30Panasonic SC-HC30 Compact Stereo System but too big for the kid's space but great sound. I looked the newer SC-HC35Panasonic SC-HC35 Compact Stereo System but it does not look as appealing as the older SC-HC30.

This model is great because the iPOD sits in the tray (in front) and does not affect playing of the CD or radio. When you stop playing the CD and turn off the via power button on top, it goes back to charging the iPOD....perfect.

This model is very attractive.

I was a little worried and hesitant about purchasing this item because I have never bought something like this online. But I was wrong its way better than the old little iPod player I had! The sound is good (for my taste and Im picky when it comes to sound!) there are all these options you can choose from like bass, sound quality etc. I even played one of my songs that was very instrustmental and it sounded very nice. The remote works but you have to point it right at it but thats fine. And the CD player is nice also, the sliding door for it is so cool! I think you will be very pleased with this product. It shipped without any damage, I was also worried about that too. I never reviewed a product so I hope this will help you!

When my old Sony CD Player/Clock/Radio finally died I wanted a replacement CD Player compact enough to fit in a specific corner on the kitchen counter, with simple controls and good sound quality. The Panasonic SC-HC25 meets these requirements very well. I use it exclusively to play CD's as I have flourescent lights over the kitchen cabinets and LED can lights over the counters, in a Florida house under a metal roof, so radio reception is nil.

My only negative is one of omission. My old Sony had a CD "Repeat-Repeat/All-Shuffle-Repeat/Shuffle" feature which I used frequently in the "Repeat/Shuffle" mode to keep one CD playing tunes in a random order throughout long recipe preparations. I wish the Panasonic had this repeat play feature. Omission of a repeat play feature is the one reason I gave this Panasonic unit four stars rather than five. To be fair I must note that sound quality from the new Panasonic is much better than the sound quality from the old Sony Clock-Radio.

I have to admit, I almost did not get this expansion handset for my panasonic phone set-up. The previous reviewer said that it did not have a backlight for the clock, that is not true. I had no choice but to go 5.8 because the 2.4 phones were causing my wireless internet to drop. And the reason I went with this set is because I switched to vonage and did not want mess with the existing phone wiring. So I bought this phone system with 3 additional handsets. They work great. And the clock is back lit. I don't see brightness settings but the default backlit setting is good enough to make seeing the clock in the dark easy. And the ability to store 5 radio stations and have alarm clock functions is great. I do have one handset not registering though. I am working with Panasonic on that.

This is the best telephone I have ever owned. The reception is great!!!

I love the speaker phone, it works great and anyone I have spoken to using the speaker phone feature informs me I sound clear with no breaking up. I also love the different melodies for the ring tones, it has one that has a soft melody so it doesn't scare me from my sleep if someone calls late at night, or early mornings. Not having to run wires to a telephone outlet is another great feature too. Just plug it in your wall and register it to the base unit and your in business. It works great all around the house even the basement.

I very happy with it!!!

The two intensity levels described in other reviews is available by taping the snooze button which makes the light turn on brighter. There are not really two levels just a brighter level (for approx. 3 seconds) whenever an action like turning on the radio or pushing the snooze button.

The phone is great and wa easy to set up with my existing KX-TG5240 phone. Highly recommend for those with wireless internet. I just upgraded my wireless router to the Vonage VOIP service (Linksys router) and needed to upgrade all my phones to 5.8ghz.

I tend to be demanding of my equipment, but I've very happy with this. It does everything I want.

Well sometimes the one you least expect and the one most likely overlooked, comes up with a winner! Emerson really surpised me. I was going to buy a Logitech MM50 but when I put them side by side, Emerson iTone iP550 won out. The Logitech had deep sound but reverberated badly. I was surpised at the clarity and pretty good bass on this model. As a matter of fact, when I put it at its height, it retained a great sound without jumping off the counter. Now, get this, what was most suprising was its cost. It was literally more than $70 cheaper than the more popular Logitech!! Okay, it doesn't have the accessories, i.e., carry bag and ultra slimness in design, but its got everything else and more: radio, preset stations, clock, sleep button, digital remote, along with stuff you would expect in the big names. And its cute too! For what you get and for the money you pay, you can't beat it. AND, if you really tell the truth, the only difference in this little guy and those "speaker-only" types, it admits to being a boom box rather than just "stereo speakers." Maybe that's why they are trying to charge more for giving you less!

When working, this clock radio is passable and the performance is certainly in line with the price. Overall, when working, the value is good. However, the one I have stopped working, with the exception of charging my phone battery, within 24 hours of plugging it in. It sits there and mocks me with its silence and displays a static time 1:19 PM. The time never changes, it remains forever 1:19 PM. It is a very lonely, silent, well-charged world on Planet Pyle Clock Radio and it's always 1:19 PM.

This took some time to understand. I wanted a large snooze button, and the unit could not be over 3" hi to get t the snooze buton on my bedstand. I wanted the iphone charging which works great! What I didn't know I was getting was a large light at the top of the unit. It goes on 1 minute prior to the salarm going off, and comes back on with the snooze button. If the speaker unit is in the up position, it is a bother, not so much in the down position. Little did I know i can control the display with low, medium & high, a great feature!

Almost did not buy this little gem after reading the rather luke-warm reviews about the sound quality and other nit-picking items. Found this on clearance at a local box store and for the price took a flyer that it would serve for picnics and other outdoor music uses. This little box is GREAT for the use I wanted it for! It is NOT a replacement for my two home theater systems sound systems. It DOES NOT have a permanent hearing loss creating bass presence. But, it DOES run anywhere off of "C" cell batteries. It DOES play almost any variety of CD media. It DOES have a decent FM and AM tuning engine, and even more interesting...although it is not indicated anywhere on the box or in the advertising....the thing allows for my new 160 Gig iPod Classic to be plugged right into the front of it (even nicer with the little docking adapter that comes with the iPod) and the Sony remote actually operates the Generation 6.5 iPod perfectly! Operates all the iPod wheel functions, skips songs, THE WORKS! If there has to be a negative, the plastic carrying handle seems a little lightweight, but time will tell how it stands up to use. I bought this Boombox as Like New off of Amazon and have not been disappointed. It works great and is definitely loud enough for my classroom where I use it. I love finally having speakers for my iPod and also having the CD player and radio is really handy as well. Other people have complained about the speakers and sound but I have no problems with it...But then, I'm not incredibly picky either...But I would recommend this product to anyone as long as you aren't really really picky about the sound (like I said, I think it's fine, but maybe I don't have a good ear for it).

The sound quality was akin to a decent radio alarm clock like the Sony Dream Machine. But that's not what I expect out of a boom box, especially a Sony. Whether playing a CD, radio, or iPod, the sound seemed a little tinny and the bass was virtually absent even with Sony's Mega Bass turned on. Too bad. If not for the sound quality, this would have been a very nice device.

Again, another nice product from Sony. Not the greatest sound, but you get what you pay for. Not many Ipod CD Boomboxes on the market, and this one is by far better than the others. If you want excellent sound, you are going to sacrifice the CD capability for the cost. The dock design is nice and I was even able to fit my Ipod Video with the case on in it (Not Recommended, but it works). There is no storage location for the remote, but it has all the fuctionality that you could possibly want. CD player works great also. Not much on using the AM/FM in this digital world, so I can't make any comment on it. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to have the capability to play CD's and connect your Ipod using a dock.

I've bought the Ipod 32 GB 2nd Generation, and I was looking for speakers to hear my music, but also for an equipment where I can play the tons of CS's I still own. Well, I've found it with the SONY CD Boombox. The quality of sound is pretty good (after all, it's a Sony product), and the design is compact and offer good aditional capabilities (remote control, radio), that are not always present with other equipments. For the price/quality relation, I'd recommend this one.

I picked this guy up after my beloved Samsung T-509 (it won't let me product link it) started to die after five years of trusty service. My last few phones had been Samsungs, but I didn't find one that was cheap enough for what I wanted.

I just needed a simple phone I could use for my T-Mobile service. I don't web browse on my phone. I don't really use my phone that much to begin with actually, so while I had a normally billed plan, I was planning on switching to prepaid as I discovered it was $10/mo cheaper, and didn't lock me into a contract. My first ever cell phone(s) were Nokias, so I figured I'd go back to my roots and pick this one up.

Long story short, it does exactly what I hoped it'd do. All I needed it for is calling and occasional texting. While I don't find the texting to be quite as intuitive as it was on my previous Samsung phones, in all fairness I have to concede that that might be due to the fact that I'd had Samsung phones for several years, and my first forays into texting were on them they were all I ever knew.

The only gripe I have with this phone, besides the aforementioned texting learning curve, is that there's just a tiny bit of lag time for it to execute a command. It's not terrible, but it is noticeable. Oh, and the camera isn't much. I daresay my old T-509 had a better camera, and it was five years old! But then again, I wanted a basic phone, that is what I paid for, and that his what I got.

What I like about the phone:

Battery life I'm not sure if the claimed 10.6 hrs of talk time is accurate, but it is a solid battery

MicroSD I can put pictures and music and whatnot on there, and use them as my background, or ring tones (free, simple, and unlimited possibilities), or play them through headphones (standard head phone jack!)

Radio A feature I'll probably never use, but is kinda cool. You HAVE to have the headphones plugged in for the radio to work as they are the antenna, but reception was surprisingly solid when I was testing it. However, you can't play songs from the radio on speakerphone for all to enjoy the way you can with songs off the MicroSD card.

Small Fits in my jacket pockets well, the keys autolock to avoid too many pocket dials.

I had no trouble getting it to work with my T-Mobile service. I just popped in my SIM card and it worked. I did have to call T-Mobile tech support to have them help me with SMS messages, which weren't going through or coming in. They had to send me some text that wrote some settings to the phone's memory, but it was quick and painless. It also survived the conversion to prepay and is working just fine on that plan now. For $50 I'm fairly satisfied.

Great little basic Cellular Phone. Allows one to do embarassing things, like talking to another person. Sound quality is good, Loudspeaker on-board and a simple camera too. Dialing digits are big and there are many features available. If you prefer a Dumb Phone instead of a Smart Phone...........this is the one for you. =:)

This is a great little phone if you like the candy bar format (as I do). While it's great to have a camera, radio, mp3 player, qwerty keyboard nearby, to me the most important feature of phone is how is functions as a phone. This one is perfect for making and taking phone calls on. As silly as that may sound, I cannot say enough how much I abhor trying to hold an I-phone up to my ear for any length of time. It just doesn't feel right. This one has a great feel to it. Very sleek and discreet. Big clean display relative to overall size. Nice audio quality and still slips into your shirt pocket without you even knowing it's there. ATT has informed that I will have to get a different phone as they will be shutting down their 2G network in May. Hopefully this one still works.

This clock radio appears to be identical to one I bought under the Craig brand name at a large drugstore. There's nothing special about the sound or the design, but it works just fine and is a good value. The item on this page appears to be an updated model; with the model I own, the iPhone 3G more or less fits in the cradle and plays through the speakers, but does not charge. (An alternative is to plug the iPhone into the wall and connect it to the speakers using the included audio cable.) My daughter is now using the clock radio with her 5th-generation iPod, which charges and plays perfectly.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 11 year old daughter. It works with her ipod nano 4th gen.

It is not an easy item to figure out. To set the alarm you have to pick up the clock and use the button

inconveniently located on the back.

Also, whenever the ipod is docked and you use the click wheel to advance to a different song the clock returns to flashing 12:00. You have to remove the ipod from the clock to avoid resetting the time.

The sound is OK, not great but OK.

If I only paid $10.00 I would expect the poor quality and quirks....but at $50.00 it is a HUGE disappointment.

I plugged it in, it took forever to figure out. Then when I switched songs it shut off and wouldn't start. It felt cheap, the remote never worked and isn't worth the time to even look at it online.

I purchased this clock in November ,for my son, for Christmas. When Christmas finally arrived and he got to open it, we found that it didn't work. After contacting amazon and then Tigerdirect, we discovered that they wouldn't exchange it because it was purchased over 30 days ago. Who opens and checks their Christmas presents before Christmas morning? Shouldn't Christmas fall into a special circumstance category? Anyway, the clock wouldn't charge his Ipod...it actually de-charged it, it turns on by itself, the tune + button doesn't work, the volume + button doesn't work, and there is a loud buzz when he tries to play music from the Ipod. All in all I will never buy Naxa again and I am very disappointed with Tigerdirect.

I bought this unit for the family minivan recently. The wife commented how she wished she could play her Android phone through the stereo like I could (Kenwood w/aux input) so I bought the Sony. She was instantly upset claiming that it would look terrible and she could never figure out how to use my stereo. I installed it anyway with an Axxess AWSC interface so she could even keep her steering wheel controls. I used a (Metra?) install kit that included a lower pocket under the radio that gave it a more factory appearance and also eliminated the need for the radio trim plate. The included Mic was a neat little bonus, took a little to route the wire down the A pillar and over the instrument cluster but it makes the whole package just that much cooler. OK, so everything installed easily, I soldered and heatshrinked my adapter harness (Schose?) together and included the steering wheel adapter into this main harness. After the reassembly it really looked clean. I went through the menu to set everything up, paired my phone and wow, clean sound using Bluetooth from my phone. The audio setup options are plentiful, the eq presets are great and you can tweak it if you like. The display has 35,000 color options, I prefer the random fade. It also allows you to make calls from your contact list using just the radio interface. The final test was when the wife came home and I showed her how to use it. She loved it, she paired her phone, made a call, played some music and life was good. Now I am jealous and want to upgrade my aging stereo to Bluetooth!

Update: After a couple weeks my wife informed me that the clock would randomly display an incorrect time for about 5 minutes and even pointed it out when it happened so I did witness that anomaly. She also said the speakers faded in and out at times but I haven't confirmed that issue myself. Still pleased with the unit, it pairs up quickly. Unfortunately our phones will play for about 15 minutes before rebooting. This is obviously a phone issue though, re-pairing is required but pretty easy with the right widgets set up.

Sangean WFR-1 Table-Top WiFi Internet Radio with FM-RDS (Dark Brown)

An internet radio opens up an almost overwhelming number of broadcast streams and for someone like me, who enjoys classical music, there is a wonderful choice of commercial free stations worldwide. I own (or have owned) a number of internet radios;a Slim Devices Squeezebox(!), a Roku Soundbridge R1000, a Revo Pico portable, a Receiva AE and a Sangean WFR-20, but the new Sangean WFR-20 is almost the best of the bunch (I will explain why it is not unequivocally the best in a minute!).

The Sangean WFR-1 is beautifully finished with a polished wooden case, an array of controls on the front panel, including on/off, volume and equalizer (tone control). They are not particularly intuitive but better than the single knob on the WFR-20. There is also a substantial and full function remote control, resembling that of the Roku, rather than the credit-card sized devices that come with Pico and the WFR-20. The amber display is larger than those found on any other set but the Roku (more about this later).

Set-up was very easy (I use an ethernet wired connection to my router but it works with my wi-fi network) and it was playing within a few minutes of unpacking. There is also an FM tuner with a separate antenna. Sound is excellent and far superior to any of the other sets I have owned except Roku, which is almost as good. For this unit, Sangean has gone to Frontier Silicon rather than to Receiva for their streams. Nevertheless, there is an abundance of stations, including Real format so I can get all the BBC channels (a big negative with Roku). There is little delay in receiving streams after switching on and Frontier has a good website where you can set up favorites and add new stations. Playing stored music from my computer via Windows Media Player has been easy and more consistent than with the WFR-20 or AE.

Now for the downside. Despite a larger display that claims to offer four lines of text, there is no control for format (as Roku provides) or for brightness (which the WFR-20 offers). Most frustrating is that Frontier do not stream program information with the station! There is plenty of room for this on the display and such information on content is invaluable because some stations do not provide this audibly; the WFR-20 does this well because it uses the Receiva streams but it would require reprogramming of software by Frontier to have this on the WFR-1. Frontier tell me it is being discussed but they have no plans for implementation! Surprisingly, Sangean, although the 800lb gorilla here, do not seem inclined to pressure Frontier. I have had several conversations with the amiable Selwyn, whom you reach quite easily when you call up technical support at Sangean, and he agrees totally with me and suggests that I contact Frontier (which I did) or write a review to make this point which I am doing!

So in summary, this is an excellent product with great acoustic performance but marred by small, but irritating, shortcomings in the display. As a result, I gave it 3 stars rather than 5.

I primarily chose this radio over others (including the Logitech Squeezebox) because of its good looks. But it's a very good radio as well. The menu structure is logical, the display is easy to read, there is a cool web interface to easily surf all stations and add them to your favorites. Truly amazing stuff! The sounds is good, though don't expect miracles. It can be a bit boomy at times, but otherwise sounds quite good.

A quick tip: I had the same problem with the WEP setup, it only allows 64-bit WEB encoding (10 characters). However, you simply download the latest firmware (Sangean posted a new version on Nov. 5, 2008) which supports 128 bit encryption! Set your router to 64-bit (for now), connect the radio, then download the update directly over the internet (Under setup menu -> Upgrade). It will download the latest firmware and install it in a minute or so. After that you can set your router back to 128-bit encryption and reconnect the radio, this time you can enter a full 128-bit HEX code! The backlight is still on after you turn the radio off, but it's dimmed. I have this in my office, not the bedroom, but I wouldn't expect this to be a problem.

I've watched this advertized on Sangean's site for a year, impatiently waiting, and finally got it yesteday. Its beautiful in every way. Installed easily, menu to navigate the 16,000 internet radio stations well done, web creation of playlists you can access directly from the radio or your own content on Windows Medida player 11 quite easy. The audio is very good (If the Bose CD desktop is an A, this is a B+ after getting the EQ right.) Most channels CD quality sound. I'm quite ecstatic having this and very highly recommend it.

A few little tips: when putting in your router password, there is a lower case alphabet later in the selection to use, and the remote didn't work great til I put a little paper between the batteries to line them up better, now its flawless. Don't let this lead you to believe this cheaply made, this is a very nicely built, attractive device.

Just got this radio and it runs great (wireless internet & FM haven't been able to establish the media player connection so far, though this is most certainly an issue linked to the router). The sound is amazing, once you toggled around a bit to find the right equaliser settings.

Do keep in mind however that, more likely than not, you will have to upgrade the WFR1 first before being able to establish an internet connection through your router. The upgrading seems to be a bit of an issue, so I thought it might be useful to write a little resume;

So, how do you listen to the WFR1 with a WEP protected router?

First, download the installer from the Sangean website ()

The logical way to go from here is upgrading through your computer (USB cable connection).

However, do NOT follow ALL of Sangean's on-line instructions.

Here is how it works;

1. "Download the Installer" -> OK

2. "Remove AC" -> OK

3. "Press and hold the "forward" and "back" buttons on the radio while plugging in the ac cord." -> OK

4. "Release buttons after display shows "USB Upgrade"" -> OK

(5. "Connect USB cable between radio and PC") -> NO! DO NOT CONNECT YET!

6. "Run correct executable file depending on model" -> UNZIP & RUN the installer on your PC

7. "Follow Upgrade Wizard to completion". -> at one point the program will ask you to connect the USB cable & give you information on what to do on the radio menu. ONLY CONNECT THE USB CABLE (you already set up your radio in step 3 & 4). After this, the program runs the upgrade.

Your radio will now accept the WEP code.

(For those who run a DHCP server on their router, don't forget to check/update the DCHP reservations list, otherwise your newly connected dynamic DHCP client might expire after a certain number of hours!)

UPDATE : (or; "how to ridiculously loose 2 stars")

Contrary to the WFR-20, this radio (well, Frontier actually) does NOT give you any information on the artist, songs, etc! This means I have to continue using the (free) software on my computer to get any information in which case I could as well have linked the computer to my amplifier... Quite unacceptable, and even more so since the WFR-20 (Reciva powered) works fine in this field...

My advice: stick to a Reciva powered radio for the time being !!

UPDATE 2 :

My radio started acting funny, lost interest in it's remote, and finally gave up all together after 20 months of use. Standard warranty is 24 months in Belgium so I was fine, but I'm not all that impressed with the rather short life span of this product.

I wanted an internet/FM clock radio and this one got some good reviews.

Pros: Great retro look, just like the AM radios of my childhood. Beautifully finished real wood case, a single big knob, and a yellow glowing display. The sound is quite good for a tabletop--maybe a bit boomy but that should be fixable by the eq function. The FM reception is helped by a real car-radio-style antenna. The good news is that my favorite weak stations are streamed online so the FM reception is not really much of a factor. The menu structure is logical and easy to use, giving access to FM, internet radio, podcasts, and your local shared music library. I haven't yet figured out if you can plug in your iPod, but there is a USB port that must be good for something. The wifi worked well with my AirPort (but see cons). The variety of internet stations available is overwhelming; you could waste a lot of time channel surfing. Finally, because Fort Collins CO is my home town I'm a big fan of atomic clocks. This radio doesn't have that feature, but it does have an option to sync time over the internet, which is great.

Cons: For me the biggest disappointment is the alarm clock. You have to navigate through the menus to change settings. This is worse than it sounds because although there are two alarms, there's no way I could find to have, say, one alarm for weekdays and another for weekends. If, like me, you keep flexible hours, this could be very annoying. Surely there's enough processor power and memory in this product to implement different alarms for every day of the week. Too bad it isn't open source. Also, the price paid for good looks is that the control buttons are indistinct and their labels virtually unreadable. Once you play with it a bit you can learn the keys, but I'd suggest you not toss the manual. Others have complained of the light, which cannot be turned off. I'm a good sleeper and do not expect it to be a problem for me. A minor annoyance was that the wifi setup seems to have a limit of 10 characters for a WEP password. So I had to reconfigure my AirPort before I could connect wirelessly. And, as another reviewer noted, remember that passwords are case sensitive.

Summary: This is an excellent, good-looking FM/wifi/internet radio, but with barely adequate alarm options.

The first few days I used this phone/clock radio, my initial reaction was to return it. I decided to give it a fair chance, so I used it for a couple more weeks and the longer I used it, the more I was convinced it should be returned. These are my reasons for returning this unit:

~~ As other reviews mentioned, the beeping sound every time you press any of the buttons is quite annoying to you and anyone else in the room. It would be nice to have the option to turn the "beeping" off or even turn it down.

~~ The clock display is not green as pictured on the box, instead it is a bright yellow. The display is too bright even when turned down to the "low" position. It is so bright in fact, that I put 3 layers of colored cling wrap on the display to try and cut down on the glare.

~~ Because of the design of the unit being tilted up, everytime I press any of the buttons while laying down, such as to set my alarm or hit the snooze button, I end up pushing the unit half way across my night stand.

~~ The alarms are not very straight forward or user friendly, beeping at you all the while. The buttons are hard to locate in the late night and early morning when you need them the most. They should be a bit larger.

~~ The phone is basic, although in my bedroom, I use the clock radio more often then the phone. For me, the phone is really only there for the sake of convenience, not as my main house phone so it served its purpose.

I'm sure I would not have returned the unit if there were only one or even two features that I didn't like, but there were just too many to have to live with. Overall, I am quite dissatisfied with this unit and would NOT recommend it.

This is one of the very few cordless phone/clock radio combos out there with dual alarms. That said, my wife has had a love/hate relationship with the thing since we got it. Most of the love goes (went?) to the 900 MHz phone, which worked great until the warranty expired. Most of the hate goes to the clock radio, which is not intuitive to set, has an alarm that plays for 10 minutes and then shuts off (heavy sleepers will snooze through this easily), and is generally lacking in features. And as I mentioned, now that the one year warranty has expired, the handset is having frequent problems connecting to the base. So we're in the market for a new unit but this one had so much potential...

I bought the phone as it looked great and I felt it would blend in well with other fixtures . Once I had it, it was missing a few features my old one had that were very comfortable:

-You cannot turn off the sound of the buttons when programming. This is a pain for your partner when you come to bed late and try to set the alarm.

-The radio frequency is not digital. It is on an old fashioned dial and does not tune in as precise as a digital readout.

-The buttons are hard to program in the dark as they are all the same size and they do not light up at all. A backlight on them would have been real nice.

On a positive note, it does look nice and fit into the budget I wanted to spend. I probably would have spent a little more to get some of these other features if I would have known.

Even though it's one of few dual alarm clocks with cordless phone, the design is pretty weak. The snooze button is at a bad location and you could easily shut the alarm off when intending to hit snooze. It's not the easiest to program and the phone feels rather cheap.

I was looking for a "cheap" car stereo to replace the factory head unit in my 2001 Mustang. I wanted AM/FM and CD, with mp3 compatibility, a USB connection, and an AUX in. Additionally, due to my car's unusual factory sound system, I needed preamp outputs with a high pass filter and a low pass filter for the subwoofers. The Alpine satisfied all these requirements, and it's been great so far.

Pros: cheap, sounds good, easy to install, plays mp3's on both data CDs and USB sticks, and supports iPod connectivity with optional cable as well as audio AUX input on the front panel.

Cons: User interface is a bit clunky.

Notes: I have a Mac, and to get songs to play properly and in the correct order on a USB stick, you have to copy them to the stick in the order you want them played, and then *remove* all the hidden files that the Mac copies as well. The Alpine will skip these hidden files, but it takes a few seconds for it to realize it can't play them.

Also, my unit does not seem to like Memorex CD media. A burned Memorex CD plays fine at first, but then in the middle and toward the end of a CD it starts to skip, drop out, and eventually stop playing altogether with "error" on the display. TDK media has no problems at all with everything else being the same.

Major CON. First of all, the user manual is on a CD and there is no hard copy. This does make it hard, not impossible, to use the manual in the car while working on the radio just harder to handle a lap top than a piece of paper. And no, I did not want to print out the pertinent parts. It just seems as if having a small paper manual would be a nice touch. I do always find backup manuals for my gear, but a paper manual for car installed equipment would be wonderful.

SOUND out of this unit is SUPER. Even better than the premium radio that came in my Escape. Have had Alpine radios in my VW and BMWs in the past so was happy to find this radio. Had to get it because the Factory installed 6 CD player went out, but also wanted a few more sound options, like Aux and USB.

CD, Aux., and USB all work great with my gear and I had no problems with any of them.

a. I tried Factory CDs as well as home burned CDR and CDRW. All worked well with both Windows Media Player and I tunes being used as burners.

b. Used a 1 GB Kingston, 2 GB (Memorex) and a 4 GB Kingston DataTraveler I Flash drive. All worked downloading from both Windows Media Player and I tunes, as well as direct copy from a CD.

c. IPod I have two different iPod Shuffles: The first Generation works fine with this plugged into the Aux Jack (front panel). Second Generation I pod does NOT work. Controls in the ear buds make this a very hard to use unit with anything not apple. (Do not buy 2nd Gen unless you are going to use it just by itself. If anyone knows how to make this work with this radio, please let me know.) There is a list of IPdos that will work with the radio, but this is on the user manual.

Both the Kindle and IPod 1st Gen use a standard (cheap) stereo to stereo cable for input to Aux.

Overall I have found this radio to be well worth the money.

Con my wife cannot turn it on or off because there is not a switch labeled for this function. You have to hold in the source button for at least 2 seconds. Mt radio is wired into the key so it does turn off when the key is removed, but you would have to manually turn it off and on if wired differently.

Con: The only place the serial number is listed is on the bottom of the unit. Once installed you cannot see the serial. It would have been nice to have the serial number under the removal faceplate.

CON: Update 7/5/2011 I finally had to print out the Clock Setting Procedure. You would think it should be simple to remember, but it is not. 2x a year is not enough to remember this fairly complicated (if you are not reading it) procedure.

Great HU for anyone replacing any stock Stereo. It will make your stock speakers come to life! Many have given this HU a lower rating because of the USB port not being compatible with the Ipod/Iphone. The box clearly notes that the USB Port only plays flash-drives, hard drives, and any mass storage devises. For ipod support you will need the KCE-433IV cable which connects to the back of the unit. For those who are having problems with their flash drives not reading your media files, You need to make sure your devise is formatted to FAT 12 / 16 / 32. Anything else, your HU won't be able to read.

I don't have time to write a full review on this receiver but the KCE-422i cable they try to give you is not the correct cable for iPod connection. You need to get the Alpine KCE-433iV cable. Look at Alpine's site. Just a heads up.

I don't review very many of my purchases because I believe in longevity and most of the time there is a new model out the next year after you buy something. I was surprised to see that this Alpine head unit is still available new!

I have had my CDE-102 installed in my truck for around five years and it has worked flawlessly! I love the sound from the unit and the CD player still works (I had a bad run of almost every other brand's CD players lasting two years maximum). Reviews have complained about iPod connectivity and I guess an informed sales person should have mentioned that you need a cable for iPods. I bought the cable with my unit and my iPod Nano is constantly plugged in and works just fine. Being able to control your iPod off of the head unit is fabulous! I will admit that some functions are hard to perform, after five years it still takes me some fiddling around to remember how to set the clock. I haven't used the auxiliary input or USB input very often but last I knew they still worked just fine.

All in all, if you want a good cheap stereo that will last a long time and sound great this is the unit for you!
