TEAC SR-L230iB HiFi Table Radio with iPod Dock (Black)

TEAC SR-L230iB HiFi Table Radio with iPod Dock
  • iPod/FM/AM tuner
  • iPod dock charges iPod
  • Wake to iPod or tuner
  • Remote control
  • LCD display

This looked like a table radio that would work well as a clock radio, but it has several quirks that limit its usefulness for that. First, it has no buzzer alarm for heavy sleepers. You can only wake to radio or iPod. Second, the dual alarms (actually called "timers") work only if the power switch is off. If you turn the power switch off, however, the back light for the clock goes off and, very annoyingly, iPod charging is disabled. Finally, the buttons are a bit too similar to each other to make it easy, for example, to adjust the volume by feel. The sound is good and the external AM antenna helps reception.

Super radio with remote and many desirable features. Great sound.

Only problem is that display is only illuminated when radio is on, and then it is very bright with no option to dim.

I love this unit. I am very fussy about a deep rich sound and this unit definitely has it. The radio has great reception. I only thing I don't like is the back light is not adjustable. For the price, I would definitely recommend to anyone.

I am very happy with this product. It not only has a wonderful quality of sound, but looks great as well. It also works with iPhones as well as iPods which is a plus.

I got this radio as a Christmas present to install in my Jeep. I picked this one out because it fulfilled my 3 criteria for a radio: durable (radios in my Jeep are tortured by offroading and leaving the top down in the rain), simple (I hate looking at the radio while driving), and not flashy (the Jeep has no security, so I don't want people to steal a "fancy" radio). This radio excels at all 3 of these criteria! It is a mechless radio and marine-grade, so it's darn near unbreakable. Some may be unhappy that this unit does not have a CD player, or that the volume is controlled by buttons rather than a knob, but for me it's well worth it for durability. And anyway, since it can play music through a USB, SD card, or Aux In, it's easy to play many CDs' worth of music without bothering with CDs. This radio has a restrained number of fairly-chunky buttons that make an audible click when pressed, and which are all well spaced and differently shaped so they're easy to distinguish without a glance. I have had no difficulty figuring out what all the buttons do (and trust me, that's rare). This radio is very simple and modest in design. It looks quite OEM, and after 3 weeks nobody has stolen it even with frequent trips to the not-so-nice side of town. Also, I definitely noticed an improvement in sound quality over stock.

There are a few things I don't like about this radio. EQ options are quite limited (bass, treble, fade, balance, and only 3 modes; pop, rock, or flat. Also, I can't seem to find a way to make it tune the radio rather than skip between stations. All in all though, it is an excellent, durable, simple radio at a great cost.

Performance Teknique ICBM-9723 6.2-In TFT Touch Screen,Double Din,Dvd Player ...

Performance Teknique ICBM-9723 6.2-In TFT Touch Screen,Double Din,Dvd Player ...
  • 6.2-Inch TFT Touch Screen DVD and Monitor
  • Front USB And SD Card Slot
  • DVD/DVD-R/DVD-RW/SVCD/VCDCD-R/CD-RW Compatible
  • Wide View Angle
  • Touch Screen Control

The company, Performance Tekniques, seems to be out of business since their email bounces and a different company is answering the phones. This unit seems to be one of the few in-dash, double din DVD player Performance Teknique made but they have a ton of amplifiers. It seems to be very good quality for only $175 and looks as good as other units that cost $1600 or more. It seems to be well made, every bit as good as a JVC, Pioneer or Kenwood and better than a Sony or Alpine. All the buttons and controls work well and the display has a very good picture, bright and clear. It doesn't have Bluetooth, steering wheel control or GPS but it does have external inputs for audio and video such as from satellite radio tuners, TV tuners, a rear view camera, SD card slot, USB and control for an iPod. Lack of GPS isn't a big deal these days since everyone is using their cell phone anyway but Bluetooth would have been nice. There is an odd thing going on with screen brightness. The car's light switch dims the screen like it is supposed to but only around the outside and the background image while the text on the screen, such as radio station frequencies that are bright white, stay the same brightness. Also, when listening to an external input like satellite radio there is no display on the screen and it's black except for a message saying there's no input. It should have some way to display photos or something in that case. I've also noticed that reflections on the screen make it hard to read sometimes due to the shiny surface. It isn't really shiny like new TV screens are now and has some anti-reflection coating but it's not enough to eliminate reflections completely. Playing AVI copies of movies and TV shows from an SSD works very well.

It remains to be seen how well it holds up but the main problem so far is the lack of a user manual. Most of the functions are obvious and the wiring diagram is printed on the top of the unit but instructions for using it would be nice and email to the company bounced and I haven't been able to find a manual online either.

Nokia E90 Communicator Mocca Phone (Unlocked)

Nokia E90 Communicator Mocca PhoneAfter using Blackberry, Treo...etc., I thought I would struggle w/ size of this phone. However, I really like it. I have Nokia's Mail For Exchange for Exchange email, latest Quickoffice Premier (excellent software) plus the rest of the software on the phone makes this a mobile office powerhouse. Once I got used to the BIG keyboard, I can fly. So I fly through emails and docs. The screen size is excellent as well. Last it is Nokia voice quality. I do use WiFi and wish the folks at Nokia would do some sort of 'smart sniffing' if WiFi available. Anyway, a bit expensive but a GREAT mobile office device.

The letters are small and the phone is heavy, not suitable for carrying in pockets or waist of trousers.

I love its keyboard to write SMS and edit E-Mails and documents.

Full featured phone with clamshell form factor for business and network (browser/email) related tasks. Has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it including making VOIP calls via integrated Gizmo Project client, streaming Shoutcast internet radio, and watching TV via Slingbox.

The device has a Linux feel to its user interface. Not a lot of bells and whistles on the GUI, but solid performance. I'd have liked a more featured email client with the capability to load more than just headers on download, but it did support IMAP with SSL and authentication and works over the EDGE network in the US or over WiFi.

You aren't going to get a sexy slim form factor with this phone, but it is nicely designed and certainly full featured.

The Sharper Image EC-B150 Premium Sound Soother

The Sharper Image EC-B150 Premium Sound Soother
  • Digital FM clock radio with gradual wake and snooze
  • 20 Digitally mastered relaxing sounds. Helps you relax and fall asleep faster.
  • Sounds Include; Aviary, Brook, City, Dockside, Ebb Tide, Everglades, Fireside, Foghorns, Heartbeat, North Woods, Oceanside, Rain, Rainforest, Roadside, Steam Train, Summer Night, Surf's Up, Thunderstorms, White Noise, Wind Chimes
  • Extra large display with full sound titles
  • Dual alarm with dual readouts makes setting alarm easy - wake to sounds or beep

Sharper Image EC-B150 Premium Sound Soother, Serial Nr. of this unit appears to be #2912. Although the stock item photo appears to show the top buttons surrounded by brushed silver backgound, the one I received is actually glossy black background with flat black selection buttons...just for what it's worth, it looks great either way. The unit as received has a tight, professional appearance, and looks very nice when installed.

The display is a backlit liquid crystal, visible by day but not overly obtrusive at nite. The intensity of the display is adjustable by a rear mounted 4 position slide switch (Off, L, M, H). Medium works great for me. Rear mounted as well is a slide switch that enables or disables onboard automatic time adjustment for Daylight savings time. The items displayed when the unit is done being set up make real sense; very large Time of Day, a very small icon showing alarm(s) that are set (along with an icon showing what will be the alarm type sounded), also the actually day name, and the date (short month name and day number)are shown.

This unit allows the user to listen to one sound by timer to go to sleep by, and a DIFFERENT sound (or FM radio or alarm) to wake up to. From what I have read, the previous models did not offer this.

The unit is fairly lightweight, but has non-skid feet that stop is from sliding around. There are a pair of small speakers mounted rear facing that provide the sound. I find if I position the unit a little ways away from the wall behind the headboard, the Sound Soother does a good job of filling the corner of the room with sound. Better yet would be to position the unit as you would a white noise generator, (across the room, not so close to the head of the bed).

Some of the sounds on this are better than others to me. Certain sounds are cyclical by nature and lend themselves to the fairly short loop that the unit uses (Surf's up, Ebb tide, Dockside, ect). Several sounds are very nice just because of their content; I like the distant rooster in Everglades for example, and Rainforest is nice as well. The wake up sounds come on low volume at first, and then becomes louder over several minutes which is another nice feature. The box mentions clock "AutoSet", and I do not know what they mean by this. I was required, as part of setup, to tell the unit the month, day, year, hour and minute, AM or PM; I didn't see anything automatic about the clock setup. The clock has options in it for setting the alarm to only operate during the week (M,T,W,Th,F) with one single toggle setting, a nice little option.

I'm happy with this purchase, and I think this model is a improvement over some of the earlier models. I have not used the digital FM radio included in this model, so I have no opinion on the radio portion of the machine.

Buy The Sharper Image EC-B150 Premium Sound Soother Now

I bought this item as a tool in promoting sleep but this has not really worked out. It's very easy to use and that design is good, but the speakers are very poor and have a cheap old transistor radio sound. It's as if there is a little "white noise" in every setting. For $40 it seems Sharper Image could have included speakers that reproduced somewhat the real sound of the ocean or birds singing. The other major defect in design is that the "tracks" used in each setting are very short and this VERY irritating. When I'm trying to get to sleep I easily get "locked" into predicting the "next chime". The track repeats so soon that I begin to focus on it, when that is exactly what I'm trying to let go of. Also the "train" track sounds like a child's toy.

So please put a little more in to it. I'm giving my unit awayReally the price for this quality should be around $15.

the multiple light settings for the face are nice, tho I keep it on the lowest one, since the others are so bright. I like the fact that it also gives you the day and date, as well as the time. The 20 sound settings are something else. What to choose? I think I like 'em all except for "white noise"...why have that when you have so many nice ones to pick from? And I like that if you use the sound as an alarm it starts off soft and gradually gets louder. So why only 4 stars? I was disappointed that the steam train sound didn't have a whistle to go along with the chuga-chuga. Maybe the next generation!....Oh I also liked the packaging. NO syrofoam, but a cardboard insert tray. Way to go!

I have owned the earlier incarnation of this alarm clock for about 4 years. The sounds are great and the loops are, for the most part, well camouflaged. I have thoroughly enjoyed this except for a slightly too bright display and look to replace it only because white noise helps my baby boy to sleep, so he gets the old one.

However the build quality has clearly gone down since those bygone years (sic). And by this what I really mean is the speaker. I already returned one and had it replaced, only to find that the new one has exactly the same tinny buzz to the speaker. This was not at all the case with the older EC-B100. For a device that is designed specifically for its soothing sounds, I am astonished that speaker quality is where they would choose to cut corners.

For those that don't know it, Sharper Image went bankrupt 4 years ago and was bought out by a new set of investors. Three guesses what they have on their minds, and for sure 'quality' is not it. Very disappointed.

After 30 days of use, the time display stopped functioning all together. The sound quality of the white noise was okay, but I expect better quality from Sharper Image. Fortunately, Amazon takes care of its customers, and they have sent me a replacement with two-day shipping. I will be interested to see if the replacement lasts longer.

JENSEN JMC-180 Wall-Mountable CD System with AM/FM Stereo Receiver Remote

JENSEN JMC-180 Wall-Mountable CD System with AM/FM Stereo Receiver Remote
  • Model_Number - JMC-180
  • Depth - 12.20
  • Height - 7.10
  • Width - 10.20
  • Weight - 4.9500

When I got the item I was pleased with the look, and the wall-mount installation looked great. BUT...the sound quality is not what I expected from a Jenson product. Not enough watts I guess, and the speakers have like NO base reflex. The sound is tinny, and when you turn it up it just gets more annoying. Also was disappointed that the remote control can only advance, pause, or rewind the songs on a CD. The remote can not adjust volume or do anything not related to CD playback. Also was disappointed that there is no way to have FM STATION PRE-SETS. The FM is a rotary dial for tuning. The station frequency does show up on the LED screen which is cool. Also...you would think the clock would stay lit up when the unit is off. it is, after all, an alarm clock as well. It doesn't stay lit. SO...feature-wise...this is a very disappointing product. Looks-wise...Great! You make the call. What do ya get for under 40 bucks? I should have spent more.

OK, cost is representative of the value/quality (i.e. you get what you pay for). Worked OK. I was surprised that the tuning was by dial, assumed it would be digital. No presets.

Cheaply made, some parts do not line up properly. Removal of stickers is a nightmare in itself. Sound is just good. Not for a person that demands quailty. Would not be good for kids. For putting in a laundry room or craft area. Update 11/24/2012. Unit has stopped working for CD's it sounds like they skip, but play very well on any other player. I wasted my money on this item, don't do the same.

Purchased for a Christmas Present last month, returned today 30-days later due to multiple defects. Unfortunately I think the favorable reviews were left way too soon, people should wait at least 1-month before posting.

(1) CD's would not play without great difficulty, meaning I had to add extra pressure to the CD Cover after closing for the CD to start playing. It did kept playing after I released the pressure, but this process had to be repeated each time the CD was changed. Oherwise the CD would just sit and spin and sounded like it was skipping.

(2) Unit made a 'buzzing' or 'humming' sound when turned off. It was barely noticeable until all lights were off and you were trying go to sleep and thats when you would notice the electrical static interferrence noise. Horrible to have to unplug unit from the wall outlet to make it stop buzzing.

(3) On/Off button stops working. Had to unplug from the wall to get unit to shut-off, which reset the clock even though I had battery back-ups installed. Then the On/Off button would work again for awhile. Eventually it stops working again so you have to unplug from wall again.

(4) The LED display, the blue"ish" circle in stock photo, would heat up and turn black and cloudy after continued use. To the point where you could no longer read what time it was or what track number was playing. It would always go away after turning off for a few hours, only to come back again after using unit for extended time.

(5) The unit is very tiny, the Amazon stock photo is decieving. Not a negative, just saying. It is soooo thin that it results in horrible speaker quality. I wasn't expecting much, sound quality is not that important to me, but they have zero bass and zero adjustment.

Overall cheap and flimsy device it is shocking Jensen agreed to put their brand name on it.

(6) On the plus side, it is an all-in-one device when working. I absolutely needed a Headphone Jack (check), an Aux Jack (check), CD player (check), Alarm Clock with battery back-up (check), Wall Mount Option (check), and small size (check), and Remote (check) although there is no volume control on the remote.

I exchanged my defective Jensen today with zero issues and have upgraded to a similar system for +$20, a refurbished Philips Cube System. It has all the same great features as this Jensen so look for my review of that unit in another 30-days.

Take my advice and spend your hard earned money elsewhere!
