The FM radio reception has been this device's Achilles heel and has been well-documented in reviews and complaints. The company recently fixed this with the release of their newer builds (unfortunately, you cannot upgrade firmware on the original Luna's). The new ones are firmware 2.12U (original are v2.02). . The only problem is, xtrememac didnt change the packaging up on the new ones and only way to tell is to plug it in and see what firmware it displays on-screen. I dont know if Amazon is selling the old one with terrible FM reception or the fixed versions with 2.12U. Anyone who would be kind of enough to post this info, it would be greatly appreciated. I will buy one but only if the fixed models. I like my FM reception clear.

Amazon is now shipping the updated 2.12U version of the Luna with the improved radio reception. The improved reception is so-so at best. If radio reception is important to you, I would buy something else. The alarm clock has 4 chrome buttons on top. Each one acts a bit like the click wheel on the ipod. You press it down to access a menu, and then spin the dial. To give you an idea how simple it is to use, the radio doesn't even come with a manual. It comes with a paper overlay that you put over the top of the radio telling you what the buttons do. After a couple of days it is very intuitive.

The display is very good. You can adjust both the brightness and contrast. You can spin the front-right button to adjust the brightness from completely dark to very bright. The display shows the date, the current time, and what time the alarms are set for. To turn one of the two alarms on/off, you press the back button for that alarm. When the alarm goes off in the morning it gradually increases the volume to whatever level you set using the configuration menu. The wake volume is set separately from your listening volume. This means you can go to sleep listening quietly and wake to a radio that gets gradually louder and LOUDER. Nice!

But how does it sound, you ask? It sounds fantastic for such a small unit. Much better then the iHome; I have both. Even at the lowest volume setting there is no hiss or amplifier noise making it good choice for near field listening.

The Luna takes up just the right amount of space on the nightstand. The only thing missing to make it perfect would be better radio reception. This is easily the best ipod alarm clock radio on the market. It looks beautiful and is easy to use.

My wife and I had been looking for something that would allow us to listen to the ipod in our bedroom. The ideal choice was to replace our alarm clock. After much research I decided on the Xtrememac Luna. Several reviews of this system stated poor or average AM/FM reception. That is something I'll probably never find out as I have never listened to AM/FM on any alarm clock radio I have ever owned.

With that said let me get to my preliminary observations. Out of the box the unit is very sleek looking with its rounded corners and its four knobs/controls on the top of the unit. Whether or not there is suppose to be any manual mine did not come with one. But, there is a placard (to be removed) that gives a brief description of functions for each of the four buttons. After powering the unit up I found it to be very easy to navigate all menus and to set the clock, alarms, etc. Now on to a few of the features I like. First, I like having the day, date, time, and alarm time displayed at the same time, though I believe you can customized this to your liking. You can alternate the contrast and brightness of the display and also switch it from dark background with lighted numbers to light background with dark numbers. With the lights out in the room I found the screen to be a little to bright, but with a quick spin of the front right knob you can instantly adjust the brightness. To me one of the cooler features is the alarm settings. You can set it to beep, buzz, ring, or play the ipod or radio. The alarm feature I have come to love is you can set it to gradually get louder over a given period of time. As far as audio quality I am very pleased. It has, to me, the best sound of all the clock radio/ipod players I've tried. A feature I didn't think I'd use but have begun to enjoy is the remote. I keep mine in the bathroom so in the mornings I can switch songs according to what mood I'm in. One negative on the remote is (maybe I'm blind) I don't see a volume control button on the crazy thing.

Anyway, if your looking for an excellent alarm clock/ipod player I would recommend you give this one a try.

Based on the good reviews I purchased a Luna clock radio with my new 160GB iPod Classic. My first impressions were good. The Luna is nicely designed, with a large bright clock display, and very easy-to-use menu system for setting the alarms, and controlling the iPod.

Unfortunately, even with the latest 2.12U Luna firmware, and the latest iPod Classic firmware, the Luna is unable to wake the iPod Classic from deep sleep (overnight) to play the alarm. (It had no problem with my older 5G 60GB iPod.) A call and an email to XtremeMac tech support were unable to resolve the issue, only noting that my problem had been forwarded to their technical team.

In the end, I returned the Luna, and took a gamble on the brand new Sony ICF-C1iP iPod clock radio. What a difference! The Sony works perfectly with my iPod Classic, and even includes instructions for using it with the iPhone. Sound from the Sony is much better quality than the Luna, with full bass and even midtones. And the radio reception is no comparison even with the 2.12U firmware, the Luna's radio is pretty poor.

As a nice touch, Sony includes a remote that completely controls the iPod menus as if you were using the click wheel. And, the Sony unit sits behind and supports the iPod with an adjustable rest, which in my opinion is a much better design. And, the Sony is $20 cheaper.

As an iPod alarm clock, the Luna is great. The only thing missing is the ability to wake to a certain playlist, though I don't know of ANY iPod alarm clock that has that capability.

Pros:

-Design is top notch

-Scroll wheels offer a good way to navigate the menu system

-Presets for radio stations

Cons:

-FM antenna is weak (I attached mine backwards with the loop around the pin just to get it to sound decent).

-Scroll wheels are sometimes slow to respond/not-precise

-Minimum audio level for alarm is 5, which can be a bit loud for the iPod.

Overall, I am very happy with this iPod alarm clock. After researching all the options at the time (Dec. 2006), it had the best design, best feature set, and best fit for my expectations for the money.

This little gadget is really cool, but while recording FM radio a constant popping sound is inserted into the recording. The reception was clear but the popping must be an internal issue when recording. Found some others online that reported the same problem, but decided I would try it and see if maybe they just got a defective unit. Bummer. Mine had same problem. Returning it for that reason. If you are not recording from the radio you would probably love this toy. Not much out there that does all of this in such a little package. Comes with radio, ear buds, usb cable and rechargeable battery.

Radio, MP3 and voice recorder work great. Decent shortwave reception, very good AM/FM. I use the MP3 player mostly for news broadcasts/Alex Jones/ Hour of the Time and the like and it works great for that purpose but I wouldn't recommend it for music audiophiles. Ebook reader is lame but I really didn't expect much due to the size of the display. My only other concern is the antenna is very loose already and not very sturdy.

Previously bought the Kaito KA801 which works very well and similar to the Degen DE1127 BUT was difficult to learn how to use and remains harder.

Of the 2, Degen DE1127 is unquestionably the better choice.

If you think that this is as small as the Degen DE 1126 think again as it is barely 1/2 the size. If there is one thing I don't like it is the tiny telescopic antenna as thin as a "tooth pick." Nevertheless, reception in both AM & FM is very good in my area, stereo sound on headphones great and off course 4MB recorder, voice recorder & MP3 player all built in. Like with all Degens' of this class you have to tune down a radio program prior to recording. The ideal carry around never leave my sight gem.

I have had both the degen 1126 and 1127 and the degen1126 is the exact same thing but it is much sturdier. it is wider also but is a little thinner. trust me folks if you are thinking of getting the 1127, just get the 1126

After reading about these transmitters, I made sure I purchased one I could program. I live in Los Angeles and some other reviewers had problems in large metropolitan areas. I can program 10 presets into this. I've programmed 2 and so far have only used one. I have a 2006 infiniti with a CD player and no line in. I have an aux power output for devices in the center armrest console. I've used this anticipating that the device "eats" batteries quickly. (Another common complaint with these units.) The reception is good and strong (maybe because my antenna is on the inside of the back windshield.)

Anyway no major problems. The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is that it didn't come with instructions how to program and although the sound is clean and consistent, it seems to lack the crystal clear highs I get when I use the cassette adapter in my other vehicle.

I got the product from a friend who knows that our family takes a lot of long road trips. Hers was similar not the same and she loved it. We took it out of the box, and there were no instructions. Strike one. After fooling with it for a bit, we figured out how to get it to transmit. Never did figure out how to get the temp. gauge to go from Celcius to Fahrenheit...though why you'd need that on an mp3 transmitter I don't know. Got it working sounded great! We were on a road trip, and all three of us had brought our portables! YAY! And then, 1/4 of the way through our trip, it just suddenly died. It wasn't the battery as we had it plugged into the charger. But we tried to get the battery section to work, too. Nothing. Strangely, it showed it was still transmitting, and the clock and temp. were still functioning, so it was getting power. Numerous tries over several days, to no avail. Spend the extra $ on one that you know won't crap out in 1/2 hour.

I bought one these in Big Lots for $5.00, so I was like if it doesn't work oh well. Man this thing is magic, any station, it worksno lie. I'm trippin cause I bought one of those griffin fm transmitters from Wal-Mart for $50.00, and it's straight garbage. Trust me I'm a trucker and inside a truck cab is all noise, but this "radio genie" is loud and clear to me. If it breaks tomorrow I've gotten my money's worth.

I was looking for a radio alarm with battery backup, good sound quality, and a good "gradual wake" feature, where the radio alarm volume comes in gradually. It is on this last point that the unit really disappoints. If you set the volume to a relatively low setting like 10, it doesn't come on gradually, instead it is abrupt and jarring. Only setting to a really high volume does it show some gradual increase in volume, but even then it happens in just a few seconds. I was hoping for something like 30 seconds. I even sent the unit back to the factory twice (each time explaining the problem via email, their response was to send the unit in). After the second time, they informed me that that was the "default setting" and returned the unit with no change. At least they paid shipping both ways. But if gradual volume feature matters, this unit won't deliver, unless you want the radio extremely loud.

I installed these locks on my front and garage door a week ago and surprisingly it has been working flawlessly. I am using (Support Challenged) Micasa Verde Vera as Z-Wave gateway since it's too difficult for me to understand why to pay monthly costs to a service provider when I can do it for free with little or no learning but some patience. Here's my feedback and observation so far

Looks: Nice, I have brass and matches with other locks in the house from Schlage

Built: Typical Schlage good

Adding it to Z-wave network "With Vera": Easy enough but I have go through an upgrade and plug-in

Adding Codes: I can add codes "4 Digit" only with names including the ability to control the day and time when the code will be active example Maid Service or a Nanny who is about to retire. You cannot edit/modify the code but you can remove and re-add.

Lock/Unlock: From outside all you have to do is to enter your code, making sure, no one is watching with binoculars and you will hear a click and green LED. Turn the knob and it will open. To Close just hit the "Schlage" button after you turn the knob to lock. And yes it does not rotate the knob by itself like other model of Schlage but that is non-Zwave device. You can also use traditional keys to open or close. At night you can press the Schlage button first to illuminate the keys before entering the code helpful.

Battery and battery life: It comes with 3xAA and 1x9 Volt battery and advertised life is too long to believe but so far I did not see even 1% drop after a week's use.

Status and Remote Operation: You can always see the status of the lock as "Lock" or "Unlock" from any web-browser/iPhone etc. Operate it from anywhere to let someone in.

Notification: You can program using Zwave gateway to send you notification Via SMS/Email alert case a particular code is used OR wrong code is used.

Fun/Programming: Being Z-wave you can trigger several events when a particular code is used including but not limited to switching on lights case it's dark or start thermostat to cool/heat your home. Each of these events require additional hardware/device or a module.

Security: Schlage lock and your Z-wave gate will secure the transmission over RF (Radio Frequency) using encryption keys (digital keys something similar to when you access your bank over SSL/https web browser). This is from what I have read so far before purchasing and so far I am convinced that it is easier to find someone's keys under the doormat as compared to hacking the security of the lock with the exception of those binoculars or being careless to use easy numbers like 1234 (as my 5 year suggested me :-) for his code)

Elderly/Disabled: Terrific use to avoid going to the door to let someone in. Can combine with a motion sensor and an IP Camera to know who is at the door before clicking unlock.

Cons:

Not a motorized lock. Case you forget all you can do is to program Z-Wave gate to remind you that door is still unlocked

Incoming traffic is logged and you know when someone is coming in but there Is no way possible to know when someone leaves

One more thing in life to make you couch potato especially when you combine with a motion sensor and an IP Camera at your front door.

Hope you'll find what you're looking for. Additionally Kwickset also announced series of upcoming product based on this technology. Competition may bring the price down possibly.

Getting repeated questions regarding motorized function as in can it lock/unlock itself as in True locking so adding this for clarity

1. This lock does not have the motor to turn the knob/lever to lock or unlock itself.

2. When Schlage says you can lock/unlock, they mean it by enablement to do so. What does it mean allow me to explain

When lock is in locked state, from outside the knob will rotate free. The moment you send a signal remotely to unlock the lock, the knob gets engaged to mechanism enabling person outside the door to hear the click, visually see the green LED blinking and now the knob can be rotated to unlock

Case you know the code you can just enter the code and knob gets engaged enabling you to let it rotate and unlock

To lock an "unlocked lock" as in knob is in unlocked position, someone has to turn the knob back to lock position

Case the knob is already in the locked position, now remotely it will let you lock as well.

Status can always be viewed as locked or unlocked as the status may be

3. Schlage does make other locks with motor that can lock itself after few seconds as in auto lock. I have one of those as well but those are non-Zwave locks

4. In case you're looking for motorized locks with Z-wave you may have to defect to Kwickset or another company called Yale search Amazon. Please ensure that you choose the right Kwickset as they make for Zwave and Zig-bee technologies and per my understanding these are not compatible with each other. Felt important to mention this.

Owning and managing a rental property is difficult enough. One real problem that has existed for years has been the management of access. Traditionally, keys would have to be mailed and returned, or staff hired to provide keys to renters and then collected. Keys can also be lost legitimately lost, leaving both the renter and property in a finger pointing battle. Push-button locks solve the lost keys, but people can share the access code. With Z-wave and Schlage Link, you gain the ability to control the lock remotely and add/remove access codes from anywhere in the world! With Schlage Link, I have the ability to create a housekeeping code and be notified every time it's used (by sms and/or email). I can also create property management codes and guest specific codes (that I can remove or disable when necessary. All remotely, from my computer or iphone. With Schlage Link and the provided light module, I can also power on/off lights when no one is in the property for protection (the light module also acts as a repeater should you need to extend the distance between the z-wave device and the door lock).

The quality of the Schlage hardware is typical: amazing. The lock looks beautiful on my door. The key-pad also lights up (by pressing the Schlage button) so as to be used in the dark. The batteries are expected to last close to three years depending on usage, keeping the locks accessible in the event of power or internet outage. Also the setup was an absolute breeze!

All in all, I am delighted with the hardware, the setup, the usage of the product, and the software/internet accessibility! I even purchased an additional dead-bolt and thermostat.

First the good, it works, connects to micasaverde's vera, so no need to subscribe and pay for schlage"s monthly service. I would have given it 5 stars except for the following issues.

Zwave range is not great. Also if you use micasaverde or schlage link, you need to have the controller within range of the lock or you need to buy a schlage light module which supports zwave security settings as the last link to the lock. A regular zwave light switch or node that does not support zwaves new security settings cannot be the last zwave link to the lock.

Also, schlage currently has no extension kit for the lever lock, (they say they have one for the deadbolt), so if you have a door that is not standard size (mine is 2 1/4" and will not work)you will have to rig something.

This is a great lock. We have 2 that are used at our rental property in Florida. We found a solution that will allow us to control our locks without the schlage link bridge. I did not want to pay monthly so I found another solution. We can control our locks, thermostat, and all switches in our condo without paying a monthly subscription.

These locks have proven to be highly reliable which is very important since we are almost 500 miles away. I highly recommend the schlage link lock, however there are alternatives to their monthly service charges.

I got this lock to work with my home automation system based on Homeseer software. turns out you dont have to use the link gateway and pay a fee, I can see the status of my lock and control it over the web in the same web page I use to control lights and such.

I did not like the link setup because you have to sign up and pay a fee even before it lets you configure the system to see if it even works. considering this is over RF, this does not make sence as you have to set it up and test it in your own situation to make sure you are not too far from the gateway.

I used Homeseer's z-wave interface called the Ztroller as the main interface and then the homeseer software imported all my locks and z-wave thermostat, its fairly easy to configure and I dont have a monthly fee.

This is my first Smart phone. Bought it without a contract and I am very satisfied with its capability.

Everyone lese in my family has Ipnoes, this seems to have the same funcitonality, there are a tremendous amount of apps, etc. If I had any complaint, it would be typing on the qwerty keypad is somewhat frustrating since the software inserts its interpretation of what I'm typing into texts and searches instead of what I am typing correctly. Smart software = dumb output. Aside from that, good phone with impressive capability. Smaller screen makes int very handy.

I wanted a shortwave radio small enough to carry around and not too expensive--somewhere in between the $20 toys and the $100+ serious boys. Well, this is it. It's not perfect, but it's reasonably powerful, has useful features, is fun to use, looks and feels good (with a matte black soft rubber finish), and comes with a handy pouch and earphones. Just what I wanted.

The display is excellent, with an orange backlit screen that's the best I've seen on any radio of this size. One click lights it up for a few seconds and a longer one keeps it on; it switches itself on briefly with a change of frequency. The information in the display is configurable and can include the following: frequency, battery strength, signal strength (in dBmicron and dB S/N), time, alarm, temperature (!), shortwave band, memory locations, and timer.

FM, SW, and AM/LW all sound good to me and are reasonably sensitive. FM pulls in a lot of stations, including the one I wanted most: KING-FM 98.1 in Seattle, which the more expensive Grundig Aviator A6 couldn't get from where I live on Vancouver Island. Ditto KOMO 1000 on AM. SW reception is good, too. Auto search only catches the strongest ones, but manual tuning gets scores more. I've heard Australia, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow, Zagreb, etc. in the short time I've had it. It all depends on time and the atmosphere. At 6.30 a.m. the 31m band is packed with stations. And there's continuous coverage from 3150-21950 kHz, not just the selections that come on many shortwave radios. If only there was a setting to filter out the religious stations that come in so loud and clear. Scanning is by thumbwheel in 1 or 5 kHz steps, or by band, or by auto scanning in 5 kHz steps. Both the tuning and volume knobs move by detents.

One particularly nice touch is that the radio remembers the last station you were listening to in each waveband when you switch off. Another nice touch is that radio is silent during auto scanning. A lot of thought has gone into the user-friendliness of this little portable. Short and long button presses for different functions can be annoying, but on this radio they are sensible and intuitive.

Hidden under a front panel are buttons for setting memory locations, time, and alarm, with a recessed button for resetting the radio. There is also a large dial to set the radio to any of the world's time zones, which apparently gives the radio its name. This looks impressive, as does the world map inside the panel, but unless you're constantly changing time zones it's really just a marketing frill. I'd have preferred a direct entry keypad here instead.

The only sour note is the feeble manual, which covers the basics but has no technical information about the radio or more advanced help (such as explaining dBmicron and dB S/N). You shouldn't have to Google things like this. Some parts of the manual are poorly explained or just plain wrong, like telling you to have the radio off or on to set up a function when it means the exact opposite. I've noticed the same thing with other Grundig/Eton manuals, even on their "serious" radios like the S350DL. They really should put more effort in here.

Despite the poor manual, this is a very competent portable that is easy to use and sounds good. A larger speaker might help and there is no tone control, though neither of these noticeably compromised sound quality on the stronger stations. With these slight reservations, this radio earns 4.5 stars from me, but since that's not possible, I'm happy to give it 5.

I saw the many fine reviews on this new Grundig G8 analog unit (another Tecsun clone) and took the chance to try it out. This is in fact a modern version of the old and very popular Grundig analog Traveller II from a decade or more ago which I also owned as well. The DSP capabilities (a Digital Signal Processing circuit contained on a very small computer chip that was recently introduced by Silicon Labs in Texas) are really fine for both sensitivity and selectivity on fm. In fact they are outstanding, especially given the low price on Amazon ($50 shipped). The sw reception was ok (fair), but without any rf (radio frequency) gain controls or dual bandwidth capabilities, it is not especially good for routine or lengthy sw listening sessions in my opinion. On am it was absolutely dismal (with some small exceptions), especially for a weak government public service station that I regularly receive on all of my other numerous radios (received readily by either quite large or even by very small units like my Tecsun PL-600, the Sangean DT-400W, the Kaito KA1102, the Grundig G6 Aviator, the Tecsun PL-450, the Sony ICF-SW12, etc.).

The unit is very well made however (but the battery door for the 3 AA batteries needed is NOT attached to the radio) and I like the system that Eton/Grundig has put together for their ATS system (automatic tuning and storage of relatively strong stations on am and fm only). The orange controllable backlighting is nice as is the lock key and the very easy and intuitive time setting and alarm system, etc. The black rubberized surface on the outside of the unit is also very nice too. The easily controllable LCD display indicating the battery strength (when on) and the world or home time (along with time in numerous locations that can be determined with a very hard to turn analog wheel on the front of the unit under a concealed door that is not easily openable and has an included world map with many global locations indicatedphew!), the local air temperature, the relative signal strength expressed and regularly updated every few seconds in two systems of units, etc. is also very high quality as well. The system also tunes very nicely with a thumb wheel just above the analog volume control knob and easily (by either fast (large) or slow (small) frequency increments for full control when neededin 1 or 5 KHz steps om am or sw for example) and is controlable directly from the keyboard just as it is done on the Grundig G6 aviator radio. The volume control level is also indicated in digital increments on the LCD screen as well.

But the main purpose of a radio is for quality radio signal listening! If you are just really into fm, the G8 is fantastic and really indicates what the future radio listening will soon be like for new radios to be released here in N. America very soon (and already available in some places in China) such as the Tecsun PL-310 (the revised DSP version of the infamous Ultralite system, the Eton E100/Grundig G100/Tecsun PL-200), the Tecsun PL-330 (a vertically oriented DSP system for replacing the Grundig YB-550PE which was yet another Tecsun clone) and finally, the Tecsun PL-380 (another horizontally oriented DSP unit that I don't know much about yet). So unless you are an Ultralite affectionado or an fm listener save your money in my opinion in order to be able to get what is soon coming to the world of worldband radio (pun intended) in my opinion!

UPDATE: August 10, 2009-

I have since rechecked the am capabilities of this radio against a known government information broadcasting station (broadcasting 24 hrs/day at low power levels) and found to my surprise that the power levels have been reduced for a while and were not representative of its normal transmission state. Thus, to be completely fair, I have changed my rating for this radio according to its reception of this station (as compared to my other radios as listed above) to FAIR am capabilities. It did receive one other weak am station quite well too, but generally it did not do very well on am at my receiving location compared to what other reviewers have found. For fm station reception, it was just simply outstanding however as already noted above.

UPDATE: November 4, 2009:

I finally feel vindicated about my earlier poor review of the am capabilities of this radio. Tecsun has just released the PL-310 and PL-380 DSP am/fm/lw/sw radios. Having purchased the PL-310 I can readily say now that it is much much better than the Grundig Traveler II in all its aspects including the utilization of the full bandwidth control capabilities of the on-board DSP chip (available at the push of a button on the PL-310/380 for 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 kHz bandwidths). These precise bandwidth controls are available on the PL-310/380 for all am/lw and sw frequencies. I will list more details on this fine new Tecsun radio shortly.

All reviewers have been unanimous in their praise of this Chinese-made model, but they may be unaware of the primary reason for this radio's breakthrough AM and FM selectivity. The Grundig G8 is a clone of the Tecsun PL-300WT Chinese-market model, and it contains a DSP (digital signal processing) IC chip which controls all of the AM and FM functions. This fact is not mentioned in any of the Grundig advertising, although it is common knowledge among the Ultralight Radio AM-DXing enthusiast group.

The G8's AM selectivity is in a class by itself among pocket radios, as is its FM selectivity. FM sensitivity is also outstanding, providing reception of fringe stations typically only heard on communication receivers. Although my G8 model from Amazon arrived with very good AM sensitivity, there have been variations in the AM sensitivity levels of the identical PL-300WT Chinese-market models, due to the Tecsun company's manufacturing process (specifically, their neglect in matching the inductance of the loopstick coil to the value required by a varactor in the DSP chip). Since Tecsun also manufactures all of the G8's for Grundig, this may also be an issue with these G8 models, although it's too early to tell.

Despite this, the Grundig G8 is a superlative value for both AM and FM DXers, especially with Amazon's free shipping option. This model's DSP-enhanced performance is sure to please those who enjoy fringe-station chasing on either band.

The previous reviewer provided a very comprehensive evaluation, which I completely agree with. This radio exudes quality.

FM band performance is amazing you can hear less powerful stations loud and clear with no interference from strong stations. AM/SW sensitivity and selectivity are very good, no interference from strong stations on AM.

I didn't have to consult the manual to set up the clock and to figure out the main functionality. Interestingly, this radio also displays room temperature in one of the display modes.

UPDATE (after 2 weeks): Still love this radio, even more so. I live in the clear view of FM transmitter tower, which results in powerful stations jamming the whole band. Previously, I had a good experience with Sangean DT-400W in getting some of the weaker stations but Grundig G8 pulls the FM stations from as far as KKIQ in Pleasanton (40 miles away) and KWMR in Point Reyes (also 40 miles) with no interference whatsoever.

Now, to the AM. I considered my Sangean DT-200 the best among my radios as does have impressive AM capabilities but Grundig G8 is no slacker either I get exactly the same performance on AM.

I didn't spend much time listening to SW yet but my spot check indicates a very solid performance.

I find myself choosing this radio more often, although, it's not the smallest among the bunch of others. The user-friendliness of its controls, quality and performance make it almost a "grail" radio. I said "almost" as my grail radio would be G8 in the form factor of Sangean DT-400W . :)

After a few reviews I got temptation to buy Grundig 8.Finally, on my table three radio receiver: Sony ICF-EX5(my favorite)price about $230 and up, Sony ICF-SW7600GR $130-150 and Grundig G8 $67CA.

After first minute I took away EX5.It is hard to beat this Radio Monster. Between two radios GrundicG8 and SonyICF-SW7600GP was god battle. Both radios are absolutely different in their construction and have different result with AM Dxing. 610 from Seattle on Sony had more noise than G8. The G8 had been trying to illuminate noise. As result that some station like 620 KG** from Tacoma got really weak almost unreadable signal.

The Sony received still readable and loud broadcast. Some strong signal station had clear signal with little noise. Sony had plenty noise on this frequency. Like DXing machine Sony got better result than G8 in my area, but quality of reception was better on G8.

SW Band very similar on both radios. Sony has better sound quality than G8.SW on G8 is easy to operate to stitch meters.G8 and Sony have same steps that made both radios in some way very adequate each to other. FM reception on G8 is very surprising. With small whip antenna it receives good quality signal on weak stations. For example, some stations in my area are unreadable on my Super Radio. Only Sony can get this station clear and strong. G8 is good FM competition for Sony. By small tuning steps, I was able to receive weak signal from Nanaimo. My conclusion is G8 is very interesting radio receiver. It is not HI-END dxing machine but considering price, size, and quality it is good competitor for same and higher price receivers. It is interesting toy to play and discover .I would recommend this radio for people, who like comfort of tuning and quality. Without big expectations, it is great radio with reasonable result.

Nokia 1661 Prepaid Phone, Black (T-Mobile)

For $20, this is a bargain replacement phone. I put in my existing T-mobile SIM and it worked perfectly.

Cons:

-People report they cannot hear me well.

-The keys are slippery, noisy, and hard to press. If you do a lot of texting, you may want a better keypad.

Purchased April,2010 for less than $15 at a national U.S.A. pharmacy chain as a pre-paid TMO kit. Intended as gift for a relative. Without activating phone, I slipped in my T-mob sim from my standard T-mob account and phone booted up fine w/o ever activating the pre-paid sim. As others have mentioned, this phone has issues, but imho this is an excellent value for back-up or when you need to travel light. Don't hesitate to buy it for temporary use if your regular T-mob phone dies. Gives you time to shop around for a permanent replacement.

Basics:

For use on GSM systems and only on GSM 850 and GSM 1900 MHz networks. Sold as a T-Mob pre-paid but will work right out of the box on all T-Mob plans w/o the need to un-lock. Key chain with eyelet. Supports up to five separate phone books for multiple users. Has three ports: charge, headphone and ??mini-usb?? The latter is not described in the owners manual. Manual says to rest the device from time to time by powering down then removing the battery to optimize performance. "go to" soft key just below the screen quickly brings you to an easily customizable list of actions such as setting the alarm, calendar, flashlight, contacts, silent mode. User can move the most desired functions to the top of the list.

Pros:

Have not had this long, but based on previous Japanese made Nokia batteries, should be better than most. Shipped with Chinese made Nokia 860 mAh, 3.7v, BL-4C Li-ion battery. Included charger, Nokia A-3: electronic auto-switching, world voltage type rated output: DC 5.0 volts, 350 mA. will charge most modern Nokia phones with the small round tube port. The Nokia BL-5B battery from my old 3220 fits in the phone although it is a bit shorter and requires a homemade spacer at the top to press the battery down on the phone contacts.

* Simm card very easy in/out with just your finger.

* Call history displays missed caller and logs each attempt to reach you

CONS:

What the others have said. Lacks volume control on the side. Control keys not ideal, signal strength may be an issue although the few calls made so far were fine. Call quality was clear, would like it louder.

A major issue is with ring volume, perhaps a deal killer for many, is that the ring volume is m-u-c-h to low even set on loud and with highest ring volume selected.

Clumsy rocker key for selecting functions, but can get by with programming the upper right soft key to access most settings. You will still need to rock the center key to scroll your list, but this works better than rocking side to side in the main menu.

Message deletion: Is there a faster way to delete? Not sure, but so far had to open every message individually to clear them. Quite time consuming

Conclusion: If you favorite TMo phone or it's battery/charger goes south, then you will be glad to have the Nokia 1661 as an emergency back-up. Heck, for the price you can use it as a calendar or kitchen timer, clock, alarm with a deactivated simm card inserted. Phone made in Brazil, charger and battery, China. Slim pocket size carries easily. Signal strength and reception in fringe reception areas reported by some. Have not had it long enough to verify that.

Very nice basic phone. I think they've deliberately gone with a cheap-and-cheerful look on the side and back plastic to avoid looking too good next to more expensive phones. Shame, as the front is very clean and stylish.

For me it replaced the Nokia 1608 the previous cheapo candy-bar phone from T-Mobile prepaid. This is a major step up and addresses everything I didn't like about that phone. Very good high resolution screen showing plenty of text, keys which are much nicer to use (not perfect), it looks better and it's very slim and unobtrusive in a pocket. It has a ringtone which isn't an annoying tune, which is a major step up!

The keys could be easier to use I wouldn't want to try to use them by feel in a pocket, though they work much better than they look like they would. They also click a bit loudly, so any kids wanting to text unnoticed in the pocket in class will not like this phone.

Shame the radio doesn't work out of the speakerphone speaker.

In case anyone misses it, ear volume is left-right on the 4-way, during a call.

If it dies when overcharged I'll be back to change my review, but I assume the other reviewer was just unlucky.

Edit: I did see some wierdness when it refused to take a charge. I popped the battery out and in and all is well again. We'll see.

So my wife's nice T-Mobile cell decides to quit 2 months before the end of her contract. Naturally, getting a replacement from T-Mobile was a big rip-off, they got you vs you got them when contract expires. So, I stumbled on this prepaid, and since the other review confirmed it would accept the regular SIM card from the T-Mobile cells, and with its $20 price, became a no brainer. Got it activated with its own SIM, then swapped in my wife's original SIM card and vola, she got a working cell for couple months until she can get a real one.

Now, this cell is small, light, kind of cute, but has no volume adjustment (so little hard to hear the other caller), even thought they hear you fine. The other problem was the way it jumbled up the contact list that came on the old SIM card, (when a contact had more than 1 number, it ended up showing multiple name listing for each number, so John 1 was for work number, John 2 for Cell, John 3 for home ...etc). Another issue is the reception, we always had full T-Mobile bars at our home, but this one was fluctuating between 1-3 bars, so it may prove to be a problem with dropped calls, lets see. Furthermore, wife complained about the keypad, sending a text message was a chore when compared with her old phone, but it still worked fine. Don't expect blue tooth capability, but it did come with a wired head phone (useless for her since it is an insult to use it, lol). The charger had an odd port (not the standard USB, what is the problem with these manufacturers)????

Anything good?!! Well, it works, is stylish and is very cheap, so I stretched it and gave it 3 stars.

If you're planning on getting a prepaid with T-Mobile, just buy the phone. Keep in mind that the activation will take at least 24 and up to 48 hours to get into the system. DO NOT purchase the refill cards on line, don't purchase the card with the phone. Get your cards from a T-Mobile store (not at Best Buy) because the online store might send you an invalid refill card and it's almost impossible to get the problem fixed (Best Buy will tell you to call the customer care line if they can't replace the card for you). Using the online refill is probably a better way to go, provided you have a credit card.

Keep in mind also that the pre-pay customer care and regular T-Mobile service centers are two different places (you will be bounced from the regular customer care center to the prepay center, be prepared to spend 30 minutes to an hour with them to fix problems). Also, if you use your prepay phone to try to get problems fixed, it might eat your minutes if you get the wrong number. Being bounced back in forth between sales, customer care and prepaid customer care or tech support eats up 10 to 15 minutes of airtime, each, if you call the 800/877 numbers. And you don't get reimbursed.

Use a different phone to deal with customer care. Just a warning. As a note, the T-Mobile staff are very nice, and as helpful as possible, but they can't do anything for you (hands tied) because T-Mobiles system sucks. If I had to yell at someone, it would be their director of marketing, anybody have that phone number?

As far as the phone goes, I can't give a good rating in it as I'm returning it after a couple of days because I can't get the prepaid service working right (from the problems above), but feels cheesy (meaning, cheap, typical for Nokia's at this price range).

The rate was high and the price was low, so I bought two of them (one for each bathroom). The tuner does not lock into the station as well as I expected. One of the radios does not show the temperature and station display. I have not used it with my MP3 & ipod players.

Having my alarm in the shower forces me to get out of bed and get my day started even if I'd rather not. I set the alarm when I'm in there also and it keeps me from being late to work! I get great reception on both AM and FM stations without any problem tuning in my favorites. Best of all, when they claim this as waterproof you can believe it is. This was really my only concern, but I have it installed on the supplied hanging hook and obviously surrounded by water and it functions perfectly.
