SDHC to CardBus PC Card

SDHC to CardBus PC Card
  • Compliant with 32-bit CardBus Type II PC Card interface (JEIDA 4.2). Maximum frequency reaches 33MHz.
  • Compliant with SD Memory Card Specification 2.0. Supports SDHC / High Speed SD Clock (50MHz)
  • Compliant with SD Host Controller Standard Specification 1.0. Compliant with MultiMediaCard Specification 4.1.

The card comes without drivers or useful documentation. If your XP operating system is up to date with all Microsoft hotfixes you'll have no problem. If you don't have the most recent driver, you won't be able to read newer SD cards. What's worse, the Internet is littered with user complaints and incorrect answers. The Microsoft hotfix that solved the problem is KB94428-v3. Once installed, the card reads 8 GB SDHC Class 8 Cards with no difficulty.

I wanted to add an SD card reader to an older laptop that has both CardBus and ExpressCard slots. I chose this product because it holds the SD card entirely within the CardBus slot, leaving nothing sticking out of my laptop after I insert the SD card.

Windows 7 automatically detected this card and installed the driver automatically. Performance is very good, reaching the SD card's 20MB/s limit. When I am not using this reader to download photos, I keep an SD card in the slot to take advantage of Windows 7 ReadyBoost.

I bought this for an older computer running out of storage with no built-in SDHC card reader. When installed, the reader and the SD card fit flush with the side of the CardBus slot, which makes for a nice semi-permanent installation. Paired with a class 4 SDHC card, the transfer rates have been about on par with the USB 2.0 readers I've used (although I don't really know where the bottleneck is here, in the card or in the reader).

This device loses one star for occasionally causing ACPI events like suspend or shutdown to fail, but it's fairly easy to install and remove (plug and play) before triggering these events.

My setup:

IBM T42p, 1.8 GHz Pentium M "Dothan"

Windows XP SP3

We have a couple older laptops without SD card slots. These cards work great with all cards that we've tried. Windows 7 automatically installs the drivers for these devices.

This card reader is nice and sits flush with the outside of my computer. The outside is dark grey, not black, but that's just aesthetics. The SDHC card will click into the reader and will sit flush with the outside, so you can travel with a card in there without worry of it popping out. I get over 25 MBPS when downloading pictures and video from my SDHC cards. I am very happy with this product and would recommend it to a friend if I had any friends with laptops old enough to have a CardBus slot!
