The sound of the radio is not Grundig like but it delivers the sound you need. The radio is not a glossy cool package, but the internal electronics, that Silicon Labs chip, delivers great performance. There is no SSB or CW, so hams take note.
For travelers and for those new to shortwave and for those who are perhaps too experienced, this is a great radio. That it only takes two AA cells and seems to run a long time on them, I recommend this radio to you!!
Buy Tecsun PL-606 Digital PLL Portable AM/FM Shortwave Radio with DSP, Silver Now
I have waited over a month since I purchased the Tecsun PL-606 Radio to post a review in order to try to get a good feel for the performance and functions of the radio.I was brought up through the years listening to portable/ pocket radios and I must say that purchasing this radio was a pleasant surprise. I was looking for a replacement for a Grundig analog/ digital display Mini 300 World Band that I had purchased 5 years ago at Radio Shack for $30-$35. I had never heard of the Tecsun Brand before, but after looking at all my options locally and on Amazon for price and features, I decided to purchase this radio hoping for the right choice. This radio has been all it has said to be in the description and has some great features such as sleep and lighted display if that is what you choose to use on the radio. I listen mostly to the AM/FM bands and play with the other bands, but for the price and the features/ functions this radio has, it is well worth the price and is highly recommended. This radio has a color choice of either Silver or Black and it was nice to get the Silver for a change of pace. The purchase from Kaito with Amazon fullfillment was spot on. Maybe being the US distributor for Tecsun, Kaito should expand the brand exposure, that way I might of heard of Tecsun before now. I am glad I found it, and I guess better late then never. Enjoy.Read Best Reviews of Tecsun PL-606 Digital PLL Portable AM/FM Shortwave Radio with DSP, Silver Here
This is a fabulous radio. I highly recommend it. I live in Manhattan surrounded by many high powered clear channel AM station transmitters (WABC, WCBS, WINS, etc.) On many if not most of the portable and semi-portable radios I have ever owned, I suffered significant harmonic interference from these stations while listening on AM, LW and Shortwave. With this Tecsun PL-606, for the first time the bands are virtually free of these harmonics, making long-distance DX listening possible. I have achieved great success with AM DX'ing and have picked up many new stations I could never hear before, including quite a few trans-atlantic stations, using only the built-in ferrite loop! LW and Shortwave are equally outstanding in reception quality. FM has been gratifying as well.I originally bought this radio intending for it to be a travel-portable (and it really is SMALL, it travels very well), but its performance has far exceeded all expectations and it has taken first place above all my other radios. My previous favorite portable, the highly acclaimed Degen/Kaito 1103 has been upstaged by this radio by a wide margin for its portability, listening quality and ergonomics.
On the technical side, the radio consumes very little power and my Eneloop NiMH batteries have gone through maybe eight to ten hours of listening and haven't yet shown even a hint of needing a recharge. The radio's DSP filtering (narrowing of the signal) is an excellent tool. Sound quality is best with earphones as the speaker is tiny and tinny but sufficient. The automatic "ETM" search tool is an outstanding utility when searching for signals. The radio just misses a direct entry keypad but tuning is relatively easy with the multi-speed dial. The external antenna jack is only for SW and FM so if you get bitten by the AM DXing bug like I did, then there is not much you can do to attach an external antenna for that band unless you couple the ferrite rod. So until that truly ideal radio arrives, then for the price paid, you just can't go wrong with this miracle worker.

Very good sensitivity on AM Band. I bought this to replace another radio. It's small size makes it great to fit in my pocket while walking. Short wave seem to be good and FM is what you would expect. Well worth the price. This product was ordered with Super Saver shipping a delivery date given tracking number etc. The next day I was notified it wasn't available anymore and was subsequently refunded. I re-ordered the same radio in black from the same source a few days later at the same price plus $7.50 s/h. The radio is excellent save the LW band 'BH', a NDB on 224 kHz on the other side of town, is totally inaudible on this radio. Not a big demand these days for LW, I bought this radio for it's MW AM and SWBC reception which belies it's small size. Still, it would have been nice to have a functional LW. The 550 presets can be confusing and misleading expect a bit of a learning curve. Small size prevented a direct frequency entry keypad. Great example of what a shirt pocket DSP radio can be, as far as it goes. Great BW selections, too. Actually a nice radio works far better with some $20 Sony MDR-V150 real headphones. The original order still lists the refunded silver version as 'shipped'! In fact, it is the product that illicited this review response, not the black radio they actually shipped!
