Bought this as a gift for my son and family living in a tornado-prone area. They seem to think is has been useful. May purchase one for our own use as well. Setup seemed a bit complicated at first, but once set, the information provided is good. Separate receiver is a plus, as you can take it with you into your "tornado room".

Oregon Scientific normally makes a good product and that is why I purchased this radio. I was very disappointed by the readability of the handheld radio LCD screen. The radio is difficult to program. The instructions are very poor. At maximum volume this radio is still relatively quiet. It is supposed to warn you in an emergency, but if it was in the next room I doubt I would hear it. You cannot test the alert siren, as you can with other models. The biggest flaw, and the reason I returned the radio, is that you do not have the option of turning off some alerts, such as special weather statements or watches. This means that this radio alert will sound at 3 a.m., if a non-life threatening special weather statement is issued. All in all, very poor design. Not well thought out. The instructions are an insult to the customer. This radio is, after all, considerably more expensive than most. You expect good things, but this product does not deliver.

We had considered purchasing this item for some time. We are so glad we did. A tornado did considerable damage about 10 miles from our house. We had just set it up about a week before. It took a few tries to find the right "spot" in our home to receive the signal. We like the indoor/ outdoor temperature reading too.
