I made a huge mistake when I bought the 6th generation Nano. It was an impulse purchase because I was so excited about the clip and it was so darn cute. In fact, I thought it was so great that I decided to have it personalized. Another huge mistake on my part. As soon as I received the Nano and started playing around with it I realized that this new design might not be so great. The clip is a fabulous idea, but it's awkward to use at times and I will frequently hit the touch screen when I'm clipping the ipod on and it affects the song that is playing. The touchscreen is, in concept, very cool, and I like how they work on phones. The ipod Nano, however, has a very tiny touchscreen which is not fun to use.

I really like the idea behind the redesign. I use the nano just for music and to listen to podcasts. I don't need a camera or to be able to watch videos. However, this product doesn't work for me at all. I nearly killed myself at the gym when I had to look down and then reach down to hit the tiny sleep button to turn the touch screen on and then fumble around with the touch screen to change my music selection. Sweaty fingers do not work on a touch screen. Actually, I ended up getting a really great cardio workout because I was so angry with the ipod that it made me run extra fast!

Other things that I don't like are the size and the weight. I think it just too small and light. I used it at work one day and it went flying off my desk when I accidentally brushed by it. You can't turn the machine off and lock it like you could with previous generations. I have a 3rd generation nano and I love it. Unfortunately, it is a 4GB version and I have almost no storage space left. I can't recommend this new Nano to anyone it is simply too expensive for what you get. I agree with all the folks who are saying that this is just an upgraded shuffle. And, to add insult to injury, I can't return it to Apple. The folks in the Apple customer service department told me that because I had personalized the product it was not eligible for being returned. AAGGGHH! I just went online and bought a 5th generation Nano and I'm going to give the 6th generation to my niece because she has a shuffle and I think this will work better for her.

My advice don't purchase this generation. Either buy a 5th generation, wait until Apple comes out with the 7th generation or get a completely different MP3 player.

Not good for audiobooks. It loses the place and does not resume where you left off if you charge your battery or download another book. Hard to use because of its size.

There are so many problems with the Nano, I hardly know where to start. Mine continually locks up, requiring a total re-start. The only way to get back to the main menu once you've made the mistake of leaving it is through a hard re-start. This thing is an expensive piece of junk. Don't waste your money!

UPDATE:

I bought the nike+ ipod kit. it works very well. the sleep/wake button functions like tapping the center button during the workout. The setup was painless and it is still very wearable with the transmitter attached.

UPDATE March, 2011:

The nano has taken some abuse and come away with a decent scratch on its screen. Still works, though. Also, the latest firmware update added the function to go to the next track with a double-press of the sleep/wake button. This makes the nano even easier to use when running.

This is probably the most controversial ipod to be released this year. The design is a radical shift from the "skinny ipod" design of the nano up to now. Perhaps even more disturbing is the removal of video camera and video playback*... you still get voice recording** and an fm radio (I've seen a few people misinformed on the matter). The Nano 6G is also compatible with Nike+iPod, but you do need the NIKE + IPOD SPORT KIT-USA.

This device suits my needs. I already own a smartphone (non-apple) that has a larger HD and can do video playback and take pictures. I just wanted something (very) small that could play music/podcasts/audiobooks and I could hook up to Nike+ since i've started running and would like to track my progress. In addition, I don't think there is a cooler looking device out there, at almost any size. The thing is almost like a piece of a jewelry; a great accessory that is also functional.

The touch screen works very well, and album art shows up nice and crisp. You twist two fingers on the display to rotate the image/interface. You CAN operate the unit without looking at it, so long as you know the orientation of the face (and the physical volume buttons are easy to operate too). Syncing to itunes is a breezethis is my first ipod so I was a little wary of syncing my music library on itunes. I selectively sync a few artists, podcasts and playlists. You can also sync and display photos, and if you have the proper cable (sold seperately) you can output those pictures to a TV. It wouldn't seem to crazy to support video playback, though i'm sure it would deplete the battery very rapidly. The Nano does not run on iOSthough it looks like an iOS deviceso don't go looking for any additional apps... though I hope that perhaps with a couple of Nano updates they may add a few features/functionsnot that i can think of any that are that appropriate for the form factor and specs (maybe some new clock faces?).

If you are looking for an all-in-one device, this certainly ain't it. Those kind of feature sets are reserved for the Apple iPod touch 8 GB (4th Generation) NEWEST MODEL. About the one thing I do miss is wireless connectivity. I'm surprised how much I miss wirelessly sync my files or get new podcasts without having to connect like I can with my phone, but it is far from a dealbreaker for all the advantages of the size of the design. If you either have a very simple need to play audio (and have more control than with the Shuffle) this is the one to get. Its a great workout partner, but also a wonderfully unobtrusive "go anywhere" device. Yes, there are other "clip on" music players like the Sansa Clip that come in at 1/3 the cost, but you are also paying for a beautiful design. Recommended.

I have never owned any Apple products before, and am reviewing from that perspective.

This is basically like a glorified shuffle. It has about four to eight times more room, a supposedly longer battery life, it's a touchscreen, it has a radio and it can store pictures. It also has a pedometer, a timer, and stopwatch. So is it worth 120 dollars? Yes, I believe so.

I like pretty much everything about this product. My favorite things are:

1: The physical volume buttons, allowing you to change the volume when it's locked.

2: The clip. Very useful and sturdy. Doesn't slip easily.

3: The whole iPod is very sturdy. I've crashed it against things before and it still keeps on kicking just fine.

What I don't like so much about it:

1: The advertised battery life, 24 hours, doesn't even come close to the real battery life. Maybe if you turned the volume down to the minimum, locked it and kept the screen black for a full 24 hours while playing music, that might work. But generally it lasts about a full ten to fifteen hours, played in snippets over 4 or so days. That's not bad for me.

2: You cannot adjust when the screen blacks out. The screen, unless you manually lock it, takes quite a while to black out after you stop touching it. It's not adjustable.

Pro/con:

3: The touch screen is not extremely sensitive, which can be good, because it guards against accidental brushes fairly well. But this means it's harder to operate with anything but the pad of your thumb finger. It's also hard to use with only one hand because the angle is weird.

But pretty much, I think it is a nice product and worth the money.
