Philips DC350 iPhone Docking System with Bluetooth

Philips DC350 iPhone Docking System with Bluetooth
  • Enjoy music from multiple sources - iPhone/iPod, MP3-link, FM radio, bluetooth enabled mobile phone
  • Auto-sync iPhone/iPod to your PC via USB
  • High quality built-in speakers
  • Charge iPhone/iPod
  • Hands-free calls from iPhone via Bluetooth

Unlike the other 2 users, I didn't have any problems with the shipping of this product. The original box came inside the Amazon.com box and was in good enough condition. The remote was included (which actually didn't really matter to me too much cause I don't use it).

SPEAKERS:

I bought this product primarily for it's speakers and bluetooth function and they serve quite well, although the speakers aren't wonderful, if you live in a small apartment or have it in a room it is well enough. Not powerful enough to blast music like party speakers though. The sound quality isn't as good as per se a JBL on stage sound system. I wish it had EQ, but it doesn't, but the speakers are good enough, I don't really mind.

BLUETOOTH SPEAKERPHONE:

The bluetooth speakerphone works very well and seamlessly. I never had the trouble that TechGuy experienced with the volume being to quiet. That only happens if you are listening to radio or music WHILE you are on a phone call. If you answer it, it automatically turns off the music (so you can hear the person talking). If you insist to play the music in the background of the call, it is more quiet. I can always however hear the person speaking, it's just the music that is more muted. When I have someone on speakerphone, I usually have them on volume 20 or so, and max volume is 32, so as you can see it's not a problem.

FM RADIO:

This is where I seem to have a tiny bit of problem, and it's probably more where I have placed the speaker and where my apartment is located, but the radio reception isn't particularly great and even moving it around doesn't work that well. It doesn't come with an actual antenna that you can adjust so I guess it's just too bad if you don't have good reception. I'm also not sure if weather affects the reception.

IPHONE DOCK:

Another big reason I bought this was because it has an adjustable size for the iphone dock. I have a pretty thin case on my iphone, but some docks you have to take the case off for it to fit, but this one is adjustable so you can keep the case on. That was a big deal for me as it would be the most annoying thing to do.

All in all I think this is a great unit, especially if you're using it for a small room and also use speakerphone.

This is an excellent unit. Does everything as advertised. Sleek styling. Looks great with the new iMacs. Syncs perfectly with iTunes. Sounds surprisingly good for so small a package. FM reception crystal clear, no cellular static from the iPhone whatsoever. Make and take calls, nicely fades music in the process, picks up music where you left off. Set the iPhone to listen to Pandora, Public Radio apps, so even streams Internet stations. The sleek styling renders button names not easy to read immediately, but you quickly get used to what buttons go with what function. I could say much more, but just wanted to counter the rating of the jerk who because Amazon royally messed up the shipment of his actual unit, crashes the entire rating system for the unit itself. Grossly unfair way to let off steam--kick the dog because you're mad at your boss. Geez.

On the other hand, actually, in terms of Amazon, I agree with the jerk 100%! I had THE EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE. My unit delivered and clearly had been opened previously. The Philips box itself was scuffed up and had a few "creases" where the side had been pushed in some, even though the Philips box was inside an Amazon shipping box. My Philips box ALSO WAS MISSING THE INCLUDED REMOTE CONTROL, just like the other fellow. That's really weird. Amazon, what the hay is going on here? You really are stumbling on getting this new Philips unit into consumers' hands in factory fresh condition. Something is really amiss in your order/processing/shipping line. Get your act together, because your actions are hurting a really fine product.

I will report back when I get a replacement unit. That may take months. The first unit was ordered May 7 and did not ship until July 6, two months later. However, in my brief time with the Philips DC350, I was delighted with the unit, so I am willing to wait. This is almost the only FM radio, iPhone docking/charging unit out there that also has a USB port to sync to your computer. Definitely worth the wait for me. I love convergence to lessen desktop clutter.

REVIEW UPDATE--Aug. 19, 2009

OK. I have had my replacement unit for a few weeks now and have an update on the review. After settling into the unit, I've had a chance to notice some items. Some are just minor details. Other items, while they may or may not be deal breakers for you, perhaps for others they would. Here are my additional notations:

(1) Faulty shipping--the second Philips DC350 box was just as battered as the first one I got from Amazon, even though inside an Amazon box. I finally figured out why I had two units in a row show up on my doorstep that way. The Philips DC350 units are being shipped directly from their overseas source in the original Philips box--the overseas shipping label is affixed directly to the original Philips DC350 box. Boy, talk about cheap, and expensive at the same time, because individual units are much more subject to shipping damage, or pirating, as a number of original cartons do not have remotes or other accessories, like my original Philips DC350 was missing the remote.

(2) No landline--the unit has no telephone line in, even though marketed as a "business solution" device for executives, so I lost out on the convergence idea. I still have to have my old landline phone cluttering up the desktop right next to the unit. Even if no handset could be included in the sleek design, they at least could have used the speakerphone capability already a part of the unit and included a number pad on the remote control. I'm pretty bummed out about this.

(3) Missing inputs/outputs--no earphone out (very strange; I don't think I have ever owned any audio device that did not have an earphone out). Also, no audio out of any kind; hence you cannot hook the device into your existing desktop shelf, mini-stereo, or stereo system to supplement the sound. Fortunately, as I mentioned already, this unit has very impressive sound for its size. They use the Bose technique of funneling the base through long channels on either side (pretty much the entire height of the device; outputs on the side at the bottom).

(4) Remote conflicts--if you own ANY OTHER Philips device in the room, the DC350 remote triggers functions on the other Philips devices. You can tape over the IR receiver port of other devices, but then you cannot remote control them. Unfortunately, I have other Philips devices in the room. I found ways to get around the problem, but what a hassle.

(5) EQ challenged--you cannot customize the sound with an EQ of any kind. However, they do give you 4 EQ presets (Pop, Jazz, Classic, Rock). I still think the sound overall is good, but some really like to fiddle with EQ settings.

(6) Alarm settings--you get two alarms, but with unnecessary limitations:

(6.1) For example, both volume and source (buzzer, FM, iPhone) are hardwired to ONE SETTING for BOTH alarms. Very shortsighted for those looking to use the unit in a bedroom, such as spouses with quite different sleeping habits, waking up ability, or audio source preferences.

(6.2) Another limitation is the failure of the designers to think the alarm setting could be used for anything besides waking up, that is, besides assuming that the unit invariably would be off when set for alarm. What about setting the alarm for your favorite FM program, such as NPR every afternoon? No go. The alarm works in STANDBY MODE ONLY. That is, the alarm will not interrupt your listening to background music from your iPhone playlist to cut in with the FM for your favorite afternoon radio program.

(7) Non-rotational dock--Movies are out, obviously, because of the fixed vertical orientation of the iPhone in the dock, so you cannot watch movies, YouTube videos, iPhone videos, etc. Other Philips devices have rotating docks for the iPhone connection. The length of the base of this unit could have accommodated the iPhone in landscape orientation nicely, so really could have been more designed with a rotating dock for the actual use of an iPhone. Now that iPhones have video capabilities, this is a definite limitation.

(8) Remote miniaturization--the remote control got shrunk in the Philips dryer. You have to MEMORIZE REMOTE FUNCTIONS, because the font size on the screen prints on the remote buttons requires a well-lit room and magnifying glass to read. No kidding.

(9) Speakerphone volume--the speakerphone volume is WAY TOO LOW. At first, I thought my DC350 Bluetooth connection to the iPhone was not working. I would receive a call, try to answer on the Philips DC350, hear nothing in response, and think the call failed. Then my wife said she could hear me fine when she called, but could tell I was not hearing her for some reason. So, I thought to turn up the speakerphone volume on the DC350. I was listening to FM radio at about level 10, and had to turn the DC350 all the way up to MAX VOLUME (level 32) to hear the other party making the call well enough not to miss words here and there! Then, when the call ended, the FM radio function would come back in, but now at max volume! What a blowout shock! I have gotten used to this idiosyncrasy and have habituated myself to turning the volume down with the remote immediately upon ending a phone call.

So, the Philips DC350 unit has limitations that may or may not be deal breakers for you. While I really get aggravated with some of these limitations at times, they still are not deal breakers for me personally, for reasons that I identified in the original review. Those original impressions about the Philips DC350 continue, even after living with the unit for a while now. In other words, I still would buy the Philips DC350 again, even with its limitations, if this unit broke after warranty.

Still recommended. Probably, realistically, four stars instead of five.

I'll keep this short and sweet it's a good looking unit with decent sound and a nice set of features. That said, I bought it with the primary intention of using it as a hands-free speakerphone unit for my iPhone 4 on my desk and it fails miserably. Callers complained of static and not being able to hear me while using it to the point where I shut it off and took the call on the phone itself. Even more maddening, you literally have to pair it with the phone every time you turn the Philips on.

In other words, at least once a day, you have to:

1) Turn Philips dock on.

2) Hold down pairing button on Philips dock.

3) On iPhone, go into Settings, General, Bluetooth.

4) Select Philips DC350 and pair.

I have a separate car handsfree speakerphone that works flawlessly with my iPhone if the phone is on and the speakerphone is on, they automatically pair, that's how it should be.

Moving on from the product, in returning it, I found that Vann's couldn't have been more understanding and helpful. I spoke with Ryan and he was the best customer service representative I've ever spoken with. He was polite, funny, understanding and efficient. The experience with Vann's was just fantastic if only Philips new what they were doing.

I got this for my husband to use with his iPhone The sound quality is excellent However I bought it because other reviews said that the iPhone or iPod Touch would dock without taking off the case that protects the phone. Not true. However, since he has blue tooth he works it that way, just can't charge the phone on the docking station as hoped. If you don't have a case on your phone or iPod it will work perfectly!

(EDITED, RATING IMPROVED FROM 3 to 4 STARS). I bought this unit primarily because it is about the only thing on the market that can be used both as an audio source and a speakerphone for an iPhone (and I admit I'm baffled why there aren't more of this type out there). In those capacities, it does both fine--not great, but fine--but it has some real annoyances, mainly that when I remove my iPhone from the unit's cradle, I have to go through the re-pairing process all over again. Also, the manual explains how to receive calls but not how to make them. Hint: if you put your iPhone in the cradle, you'll need to make sure the unit's audio source is set to 'Bluetooth,' because it will default to 'iPod.' I have to make this change every time I put the phone back in the cradle.

The speaker quality is adequate for playing music in the background, but nobody's going to be rocking the joint with these speakers. They are on par with really cheap computer speakers.

Only the poor speaker quality and the connection annoyances keep this from a 5 star rating, because in the end it does exactly what I want it to do--charge my iPhone while it plays music in the background, while letting me make calls using the unit as a speakerphone. There's precious little in the market that offers those features as of early 2010.

That said, it works. I do think this unit's price point should be a fair bit less than it is, but it's not like there are really other good options out there.

I found this Sony portable shortwave radio when my old Radio Shack radio quit after 20+ years and everything Radio Shack has now is made in China. I do not buy things made in China. The Sony is an excellent product made in Japan. The shortwave reception is very good and I can tune in more stations than before. It even comes with an external antenna but I have not used that. It takes time for me to get accustomed to the input buttons which have multiple functions depending on the current operational mode. The real drawback is that there is no AC adapter and due to a different connector size, I cannot use the adapter from the previous radio.

I bought this Sony World Band receiver through Amazon about 1 month ago. It included a station guide and external antenna , which is very handy for international broadcasts. There are options for alarms and timezones which would be good for somebody who does a lot of travel. The sound quality is very good , but even better with headphones , as this radio is actually stereo , but with only one speaker without the headphones. SSB communication is very clear as are CW signals . I am very happy with this purchase. The only negative is that the ac power adapter is not included , but this is something east to purchase locally .

I was looking for a radio that had a great AM signal. This radio did what I wanted it to do. I live in Michigan and I wanted to get a Chicago radio station. I was able to get this station with this radio when other radios I could not.

Sangean PR-D9W AM/FM Weather Alert Rechargeable Portable Radio

Sangean PR-D9W AM/FM Weather Alert Rechargeable Portable Radio
  • Digital Weather Alert
  • requires four AA cells (not supplied)
  • Weather Alert Siren
  • 19 Presets
  • Snooze function, Dual Alarms
  • Automatic Alert Warns you of Hazardous Condition
  • Flashing Red LED Light with Emergency Siren
  • Rechargeable and Dry-Cell Battery

For years, I have tried every type of portable radio I could find so that I could listen to my public radio station in the morning, moving it from the bedroom to the bathroom to the kitchen. If it was a rainy morning, I knew the reception would be poor. If it was slightly bumped, the carefully tuned station would be lost. I finally dropped my last "shower" radio and decided to find a more permanent solution.

This Sangean PR-D9W is PERFECT!! The sound quality is unbelievable. I no longer have to worry about losing reception. It is the best purchase I have made. I was hesitant to spend this kind of money for a radio, but if I had only known it could be this good, I would have done it a long time ago. I love everything about it. I purchased the recommended rechargeable batteries at the same time. I want to do everything right by this radio! How wonderful to wake up to crystal clear NPR rather than to undiscernable static! It is small enough for travel, comes with a nice travel sleeve to protect it, and I don't think I will ever be separated from this radio. The weather alert function is appreciated, as our area has been under tornado watches recently and we seem to lose power with the frequent and powerful storms. I feel much more secure having this radio.

The new Sangean PR-D9W integrates the key design components of the Sangean PR-D7 portable radio with the functionality of the Sangean DT-400W (a pocket radio) offering listener's one really neat and flexible form factor. About the size of a trade paperback and smaller than the PR-D7 radio, the PR-D9W is a true travel radio loaded with features not found on other Sangean portable radios.

The Sangean PR-D9W is equally at home in a hotel room, hospital room or night stand in your bedroom. What surprised me after I unboxed this radio was the sound from its 2.25-inch speaker, which I now prefer over the PR-D7 radio. Very subjective here!

BTW, while I am not a Dxer, I was able last night to pick up AM stations from California, Utah and New Mexico from my home in Mesa, Arizona. I listen to NPR all day and jazz in the evening, the PR-D9W does its job in either case.

The PR-D9W is priced at 75% less than the Tivoli Songbook and has more usable features.

If you are looking for a travel radio that can also serve other roles in your radio sphere (high utilization factor) the Sangean PR-D9 may just be the radio for you.

Well like many others I'm an owner of Sony ICF-M410LIV AM FM Weather Band radios. They gave me many years of rugged service until recently when the AM part of the radios gave out. Being that I listen to AM about 95 percent of the time at work it was time for a replacement.

Here were the 3 things I needed from a radio: Digital tuner, a Weather band and a channel lock button. The Sangean met those requirements and the size was a little smaller than the Sony, which was good. The only hesitation was this was a new model but I figured I'd order it anyway.

1st impressions after a few days: Build quality is good, as expected with a Sangean. Reception is excellent and battery usage is good also. I have 3 reasons for not giving this 4 or 5 stars:

1. The radio shut off a few times for no reason. I turned the lock button off and powered the radio back on. Still don't know why it happened.

2. The audio quality has more of a bass tone than I prefer. Way more than the Sony and more than the Sangean PR-D7 which I own also. A separate tone button would have been nice.

3. No station presets. The process of setting the presets and then recalling them is kind of ridiculous. Way too involved.

Hopefully a future model from Sangean or another manufacturer will address these issues. But for what I'm looking for, this seems to be the best option out there.

UPDATE: I gave it a chance but I returned the PR-D9W. The AM reception was getting progressively worse and the radio was still turning off for no reason. Also there was a constant high pitched noise that was just loud enough to be annoying. Too bad because I own the PR-D7 and love it. Hopefully others will have better luck than I did.

First, the bad news. Another user reported a problem with the headphone output, which I also experienced. The right channel on the headphones output has an enormous hiss to it, which does disappear if I turn the volume way up. Unfortunately, I'm to old to appreciate loud music through headphones. I just ordered a replacement radio. I've been an Amazon Prime customer for years, and hardly ever return anything. But perfect isn't perfect, and when I spend money I want to get a sample of the product that's as good as it can be. So I look forward to receiving my replacement, with no hiss. Not a biggey.

Other than the headphone hiss, the product's as perfect as it can be, for my needs. I wanted a small form-factor, simple portable radio and this little baby is it. My main use is FM radio, both music and NPR shows. I occasionally listen to AM news or sports.

At any rate, I'm fairly techy, and don't have any problem with most button-pushing user interfaces. I played with it for half an hour, read the book, and find that it's a lot easier to use than I expected. It's not as simple as the Sangean WR-11 (which I covet), but it's a lot easier than many UI's that I've dealt with.

There are three minor annoyances:

1) There are two tuning "modes" to this radio. My Favorite channels mode allows you to scroll up and down, using the cursor arrows, through up to 19 channels that you've saved. The other mode is direct tuning, either in steps or push-and-hold to scan to the next strong channel. When you switch from favorites back to direct tuning, it brings you back to wherever you were on the dial before you entered favorites mode. I wish it would just stay on the current frequency. Others may prefer the way it actually operates.

2) In direct access mode, push-and-hold on the cursor scans to the next strong station. When you do that, it skips one or two steps with the initial push. A one-second delay would work wonders here, and would be very simple to program. This is the MOST annoying aspect of the radio.

3) Every time you set the alarm, you have to go through the whole process of push-and-hold to set the hour, minute, and volume. Push-and-release only displays the time that is currently set. I suppose it prevents you from accidently enabling or disabling the alarm, but I'd prefer that a push-and-release just enable or disable the alarm. Maybe if I ever accidently disabled the alarm, I'd feel otherwise, so it's not a big deal, just a couple of extra clicks.

So those are the complaints. Now to the good stuff:

Being an FM listener, and music lover, this is a perfect little portable/travel radio. The size is exactly right. The only thing that would make the whole package better would be a good old-fashioned leatherette case. It is sold, well-built, and it feels great in your hands. The cabinet is smooth, the buttons are a little rubbery feeling but not sticky or gross feeling.

The speaker is voiced for a reasonable balance of bassy tone. Voice programs sound good, music is a little on the low-fi side, but not tinny or shrill. It doesn't get too loud, and it certainly won't fill a room with rich sound. It sounds great sitting a couple of feet away, on the desk or nightstand. That's what I bought it for.

With the antenna folded into its clip, nothing protrudes. There's a lock. I can throw this into my backpack or suitcase and not worry about arriving at a hotel with anything broken or the batteries run down. Speaking of the batteries, I've had the thing for three days, playing it two or three hours a day, and the new Eneloops I bought to go with the radio still show 4 bars on the charge indicator. I'm figuring I can take a two-week trip with two sets of batteries, and won't need to bring the charger.

Enough has been said already about reception that I don't think I need to add anything. It pulls in plently of stations, more than enough to keep me entertained.

I haven't used the weather band function yet, other than to test it and make sure it works. I hate listening to weather radio. Still, I sometimes travel to areas where hazardous weather is a reality, so I'm glad that function is there. I wish the radio didn't have the ugly Public Alert logo with the lightning bolt icon. It takes away from its overall appearance, which is otherwise clean, simple, and even a little classy.

Others have complained about a lack of a handle. I've already mentioned that I really appreciate the tactile qualities of this radio, and I think a handle is completely unnecessary. The cabinet, although glossy, isn't slick. I suppose if you just got done eating fried chicken it might be a problem, but otherwise this radio is very easy to grip and it has just the right heft to it.

I'm confident that I'll get a sample of this radio where the headphone amp doesn't hiss. Once that happens, I'll be completely satisfied. I hadn't bought a radio in 30 years before I went looking for one, and I'd never heard of Sangean before. I'm impressed. It's worth the money.

UPDATE I received the replacement radio, and it works great. I'm very happy with the purchase and would definitely buy another Sangean based on this experience.

I'd never heard of Sangean before searching on the web for a high quality weather radio with AM/FM and multiple power options, but its PR-D9W is a high-quality radio indeed. As others have noted, a critical plus here is its tuner seems very sensitive so that even weak stations that my component stereo tuner has trouble picking up, it seems to pick up quite clearly. It can be set to receive the emergency messages from the NWS and here in Southern California, it picks up the Oxnard/San Gabriel Mountains transmitter, as well as the Riverside and San Bernardino County transmissions. It also has some very cool pluses like 19 programmable presets (which can store any combination of AM and FM stations), nice backlighted display, digital tuning and scanning (a big plus over analog tuning, in my opinion), sleep timer and alarm clock functions, and can be powered by 4-AA batteries (either alkaline, lithium, or rechargeable) or via its AC adapter. Finally, though it's only a monophonic radio, its sound is above average, and music sounds pretty good.

Sony Speaker Dock/Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone - Black

Sony Speaker Dock/Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone - Black
  • Box Content - ICF-C1iP clock radio/speaker dock with attached FM wire antenna, power supply adapter, and installed battery, AM loop antenna
  • Power requirements - 120 VAC, 60Hz (Clock backup requires 3 VDC battery)
  • Output power - 3 W +3 W (at 10% harmonic distortion)
  • Frequency range - FM 87.5-108MHz and AM 530-1710Hz
  • Sound enhancer - MegaXpand, Bass Reflex Speaker System

UPDATE: Sony has updated this clock radio with a new model the ICF-C1PMK2 which has even better AM reception, a brighter display, and official iPhone compatibility.

Several weeks ago, I upgraded to a new 160GB iPod Classic. At the same time, I bought an XtremeMac Luna clock radio, which had good reviews. Unfortunately, I found that the Luna is incompatible with the new iPods it cannot wake them from deep sleep to play the alarm in the morning. A call to XtremeMac got nothing more than a note that my issue had been forwarded to their technical team.

Without any reviews, I took a chance, and ordered the Sony ICF-C1iP iPod clock radio, and am I glad I did! The Sony is fully compatible with my iPod Classic, and Sony includes instructions for using the iPhone as well. And, the sound quality and radio performance is remarkably better than the Luna or other iPod clock radios I've tested.

Sony has done a great job with the ICF-C1iP. It is an upright design, with most of the unit behind the iPod, in a slanted design with controls at the top. The iPod dock accepts universal adapters, but they aren't really needed as Sony has an adjustable supporting plate behind the iPod.

Unlike the Luna, which attempts to duplicate the iPod menus on its display, the Sony ICF-C1iP includes a remote control that lets you completely control the iPod menus as if you were manipulating the scroll wheel. Quite impressive.

Sound quality is very good for a clock radio with full bass and even midtones. Sony includes a simulated mode they call "Mega XPand" that in my experience made the music sound muddied and under-sampled. Your mileage my vary.

The blue-backlit clock is located in the iPod dock area, and 3 brightness levels are available. In my experience, even the lowest setting is a bit too bright, but not enough to disturb me at night. I wish that the display were slightly larger, although the high contrast lets me see the time without my glasses from a reasonable distance.

And, unlike most iPod clock radios, the radio reception is outstanding with an external AM antenna provided. The unit has dual alarms, which can be set to iPod (you can even select a wakeup volume), Radio, or Buzzer.

On the downside, the battery backup for the buzzer alarm and clock is a small expensive lithium battery. And, if your relying on just the buzzer to wake you up it's not very loud. You also have to be careful when changing the alarms to make sure that you don't accidentally turn the alarm off. But all of these are minor issues. However, these are all very minor issues that don't detract from the unit overall.

All in all, in my experience, this is the best iPod clock radio you can buy.

Buy Sony Speaker Dock/Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone - Black Now

I have been using the Sony ICF-C1iP iPod Dock w/clock for about two months now. I bought it for my office, so that I could listen to the radio and also play songs from my iPod Touch. As far as looks go, this Sony is quite attractive. The buttons, located on top of the unit, are large and arranged well. The clock is a nice backlit blue, and is quite pleasing to the eye. The iPod dock, itself, is well made and offers an adjustable back support, so that every iPod model will be held in place firmly. Overall, the style, design and features of this unit are 5-star all the way.

Now for the weakness, which is arguably the most important feature of any music playing device. The sound quality of this Sony iPod dock is very average; barely. There is just no low end (bass). Don't get me wrong, the music doesn't sound tinny or distorted, when played at reasonable volume levels, but it just doesn't have the full-bodied sound that I desire. I wasn't expecting Bose SoundDock quality from this item, but I assumed that it would sound much better than it does. Highs are fairly crisp, and the midrange is very pronounced, but notes and sounds cut off quite sharply below that. I cannot find the rated frequency response of this model but I'm sure the numbers are fairly unimpressive. The stereo soundfield is also extremely narrow, even with the included "MEGA Xpand" feature turned on.

The included remote control is nice, and it controls nearly every function of this device. However, all clock and alarm related features must be controlled from the dock itself. The unit is fairly large, considering that it is advertised as a clock radio. I don't know as though I would want this thing sitting on my nightstand. But I didn't buy it to be used as a clock radio, so I am not rating it as such. Overall I am fairly pleased with this device, as a means to play some low volume music in my office. However, for anyone that is looking to play loud music, and/or is expecting solid bass frequencies in your music, then I would definately look past this Sony ICF-C1iP dock. It does suit my needs here at the office quite adequately, and that is why I decided to keep it, but I certainly would not buy this unit for use at home. I paid just over $100.00 for mine (with tax), and for that kind of money I would exect much better sound. If it were only $50 or $60, I would give it 4 stars, but for the money that Sony demands for it I cannot rate it any higher than 3 stars.

My father bought this clock radio for me as a gift because he knows i love my ipod. I have tried several different clock radios now that would enable me to wake up to something other than a radio or buzzer like a CD or ipod. None of them have worked very well for various reasons.

As soon as I plugged in the Sony alarm clock, the time and date were already set for me to Eastern Daylight Time. I hardly had to read the instructions because set up was so easy and user friendly. The most impressive was the ability to fully control the ipod from the remote control WITHOUT having to buy a special attachment from the Apple store so that the ipod will recognize a remote.

In addition, I thought I would have to set not only the alarm on the Sony, but also set the ipod itself to go off at 7am. Instead, I found that the Sony "wakes up" the ipod to go off for 7am, so I did not have to set up the ipod alarm at all.

I love my new clock radio. The only drawback is that you have to place the ipod in the dock the entire night, which means that your battery is constantly charging the entire night. From my understanding, this leads to early burnout of the battery. I wish there were a way to turn off the battery charger, but still have all the other functionality.

Want Sony Speaker Dock/Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone - Black Discount?

Best iPod Alarm Clock period.

Amazingly easy to set up, has 2 seperate alarms, and, unlike the iHome this is replacing, you can set the wake up volume. As an added bonus you can even set each alarm at a different volume!

I can't tell you how many times I've jumped out of bed due to the lack of volume control on the iHome (OK, so the iHome's volume is "progressive" it starts out too loud and works its way up to insane within about 5 seconds).

I just got this clock/radio/alarm yesterday and thought I would give some initial impressions. It has good sound for a clock radio and charges and plays the IPOD in addition to playing the radio which has five presets and offers an optional alarm buzzer or music wakeup.

For 2" speakers it has great sound. It is slightly large length wise as it barely fits on my nightstand. Sony could easily have made it 2 to 3" less wide but left dead room at each end of the radio for expansion in a new series later with larger speakers or is engaging in creative packaging meant to impress beyond the actual size of the speakers sort of like the large chip bags which are only half full. However, it does not provide sound even close to some of the Panasonic Micro Stereo PM series which have a music port for an Ipod or any MP3 player which however is substantially larger and will not fit on a nightstand like this Sony Ipod Clock Dock but will do very well filling up a medium size living room with quality sound.

Yes, the backlight display is a bit bright on its lowest setting and dimly lights the bedroom up at night. Sony also loves to show you a flashing colon between the clock numbers to show you it is working I guess which only anoys you if you look at it. Duh, it wouldn't be on if it wasn't working so enough of the flashing second colon already!

It also lacks a bass and treble control, although the overall sound quality for the size of the speakers is pleasing and bests most clock radios. The sound volume is adequate for a bedroom or kitchen, but will not be near loud enough for a livingroom stereo.

Overall I like the unit and its sound is decently good for 2" speakers. I wish they had either put in 2 1/2 inch speakers to match the larger case, or made it more night stand friendly buy cutting the length down about 2 to 3" which could have easily been done with all the dead space on each end. If they had done that, installed a bass and treble control, and had a darker option for the dimmer, it would have been perfect.

All the same, I recommend it as a Ipod Clock radio although it takes up alot of space unnecessarily on my night stand as the case is large, especially for the speakers it houses. I recon you could get a scrap piece of window tint and cut to fit the slightly bright display for a darker bedroom at night.

If you want a clock radio, be careful if choosing the Altec Lansing IM600 which although more portable and not quit as wide as the Sony, as Altec appears to be engaging in a little creative advertising when they say it can be used as an alarm clock as it seems not to have a clock at all, except for using the Ipod as one.

LG 800G Prepaid Phone With Triple Minutes (Tracfone)

LG 800G Prepaid Phone With Triple MinutesThis is an excellent step-up from the flip-phones that those of us who rarely use a cell phone were stuck with if we wanted to pay low amounts for a cell phone and usage. There's also a similar Motorola model at Tracfone but it doesn't list under my zip code so I haven't compared the two phones.

I'll upgrade this report after I've become familiar with all the bells and whistles: for example, the specs call for a max. 8 GB micro SDHC card but supposedly the software will only handle 4 GB. The software has been upgraded (see "1" below) and I'm going to test the limits. Meanwhile, here are five key things you may not know about:

1) Software Version:

When you get your phone, make sure you have the improved software version (V10e as of this writing) and not the older, buggy one (V10d) that might be sitting on a seller's shelf for some months:

A) From the main screen press the square with 4 dots at the lower right.

B) On the next screen, press the "Settings" icon in the lower right.

C) On the next screen, press "Phone".

D) On the next screen, scroll down with your finger on the red bar to the very bottom, then press "Information".

E) On the next screen, press "Device Information".

F) At the very bottom, under "S/W Version" it should say "V10e" (or later). It must NOT say "V10d" V10d is the buggy version.

2) Screen Size: The 2.8" (diagonally measured) screen on the LG-800G is 2 5/16" vertically and 1 3/4" horizontally, held in the standard "portrait" position. For comparison, the view screen on my 2"x2"x4" camcorder is a typical 2 1/8" x 1 1/2", only 79% as much screen as the LG-800G.

3) Needed accessories not included with the phone or Tracfone's Universal Accessories Kit:

A) Micro SDHC card to provide extra memory: the specs say 8 GB max, users say 4 GB max: I'll update this after some testing with the latest software version (V10e). It's needed if you want to store a lot of apps, vids of your kids playing music, soccer, presenting their science project, etc. A 4 GB card is only $4+ with free shipping on Amazon as I write this. The "internal memory" built into the phone is 20.4 MB (0.0204 GB) of which 18.8 MB is free when the phone arrives. That is fine for some pics, messages, a couple of apps, etc. but not a lot more.

B) Cable for phone to computer USB connection ($2.34 with free shipping on Amazon as I write this): Since you can treat the phone's memory like a hard drive from the computer, you can use the internet service on a computer to download apps, etc. instead of using up cell phone minutes. You can also transfer photos, videos, etc. to and from the computer.

C) many recommend a screen protector: a thin transparent film that statically sticks to the screen. They're anywhere from $1-$6.

4) Comparison Shopping:

If you buy directly from Tracfone and pay the full price, you get an additional "Universal Accessory Kit." But there's not a lot of info as to what it contains so here it is:

It contains a car cigarette-lighter-receptacle charger (the AC charger comes with the phone itself), an earbud with mike for hands free use and adapters for any LG phone, and a clunky, cheap, but shirt pocket wearable pouch with a permanent belt loop attached to it -but whose weak closing strength I'd never trust on a belt loop: it does offer good protection of the display screen, though, in case something would rub against it or it fell our of a shirt pocket.

5) For Existing Tracfone Customers Transferring Phone No. & Minutes:

A) When you transfer phone number and minutes: your expiration date is transferred and 60 days added to it and your all your minutes, no matter if they come from the most recent minutes you bought or from rollovers, are transferred and 10 minutes added to them.

B) It may take an hour or more for the transfers to take place, so don't activate/deactivate the phones if you'll need your cell phone in the following couple of hours. They have a temporary number assignment workaround if you have to do it that way, but there's a charge. All that said, it only took about 10 minutes or so for my new phone to become activated after the old one was deactivated.

C) For those Tracfone customers who upgraded and say they didn't get their minutes transferred:

That INITIALLY happened to me: the phone number was transferred but not the minutes. A call to Tracfone several hours later required about 10 minutes time for them to verify I had had minutes left on my old (now inactive) Tracfone and transfer them. An excellent sales rep who corrected the problem for me said their system is buggy and sometimes cuts off the minutes when the phone number is transferred.

My husband and I have owned Tracfone's for 8 years. He's not a big cell phone guy therefore I haven't been able to talk him into phones like and Antroid Touch or an iphone, which I'd love. So I have to settle for what Tracfone has to offer. After losing my newest phone (LG 500g) I deceided to go with what I really wanted and that was a touch screen phone. This model has not disappointed me. I call it the "poor mans touch screen phone" because the size obviously doesn't compare to iphones or Androids but if your looking for a phone like that with extras such as web browsing, games (with game download capability), camera, video, and a few other things like an alarm setting ect. then this just might fill that need. The thing I like about it compared to a phone like the LG 500g is that it's a full screen and not a keyboard taking up half the available screen space. I downloaded the Facebook app and it's actually worth using the web browser to check Facebook & email. Texting it easy. Not any more difficult then trying to hit the right keys on the small LG 500g keyboard. I'm finding the screen very responsive to touch as well. I ordered a memory card as well because I needed to get some video of my son's piano sent to me from an iphone but my LG5 500g said there wasn't enough room to receive them AFTER it deducted my units for them:( Had problems with accidently hitting the browser button with my LG 500g and I lost a lot of units that way. Shouldn't be a problem with this phone. That was the deciding factor when choosing between this phone and the Samsung 404g. I hope this review helps. I would also recommend a phone cover because these phones are quite slippery, which is how I lost my last phone.

Buy LG 800G Prepaid Phone With Triple Minutes (Tracfone) Now

I recently got this LG800g Tracfone to replace an older LG225 flip phone, primarily because I wanted a cookie type phone that could also serve as an mp3 player. I purchased a data cable, 4 gb micro disk (the max for this particular phone), and silicone gel case from Amazon, so for under $70 I have everything I need to make this phone function for all my needs. When connected to a docking station, the sound is awesome--and welcome--since our local radio station decided Central California residents are no longer interested in classical music. Transferring my number and minutes over to the new phone was easy with Tracfone's customer service.

As for transferring music onto your Tracfone, just be sure you connect to "Mass Storage" so the device icon shows up in "My Computer". Then it's a snap to cut and paste or copy/paste from one drive to another.

If you are new to the LG800g, Google tutorials for an impressive list of tasks. I did this to create playlists for my phone so I can separate the classics from the Celtic and so forth.

With the triple minutes for life option, I will never run out of minutes. Neat!

For the last year I've been cell-less, one because I could no longer justify a $30/month bill for something I used maybe 30-40 minutes a month on, and two when I did purchase a prepaid phone it felt cheap and the sound quality wasn't that good. This is the prepaid phone of my dreams. I love the touch screen display, it's big enough for me to see what I'm doing and it looks and works like every other contract feature phone I've used. The sound quality is great it reminds me of a land line, no one can even tell I'm using a cellphone it's so clear.

I've never used a tracfone before but I'm overly impressed. This phone gives you triple minutes for life and if you're a person who doesn't talk much a 400 minute card tripled to 1200 minutes can last you a year for $100. I love I can use those minutes how ever I want whether on texting, internet browsing or calls. I forgot to mention that the same 400 minute card gives you 2400 minutes of web browsing or a whopping 3600 text, I was even able to use the phone to text my votes on american idol last week. It charges .30 minute to send and .30 minute to receive a confirmation of your vote. That's still less than calling and wasting a whole minute.

I live in an area that's prone to rolling blackouts during the summertime and now I'll be able to browse the web to find where the nearest cool zone will be without spending a arm & leg in data charges. That's something I can't do once the electricity is out and my wifi no longer works, plus this phone doubles as a well organized mp3 player. I'm set. I purchased this phone from HSN with 1500 minutes, a case and car charger for $100. Every now and then you can catch it as a TSV for that price. I also purchased a screen protector and 4 gb micro sdhc card to go with it. I literally feel like I won some kind of jackpot with this phone.

BTW this phone does not have a flashing light to tell you when you have missed a message. I just realized if you go into settings, then profiles, and select normal, outdoor, silent, etc, there is a secret menu where you can set a audible message reminder of once, or every 1-10 minutes. Make sure you get a good ringtone from the tracfone website and your set. I really love this phone!!!

If you buy this phone for other reasons than using it as a communication device then you should buy the 4gb Micro SD memory card and the LG Micro USB Data Cable. If you want to be able to upload your music or download your videos and pictures you must set up your External Memory. Here are some steps I went through:

1. Install the 4gb Micro SD card,

2. Connect the USB data cable,

3. The screen should say Connect to Mass Storage,

4. Choose yes.

5. I then made the choice to exit.

Something else you may have to do is:

1. Click the MENU icon.

2. Then select the Settings icon.

3. Then select the Phone icon.

4. Then select the Memory Info icon.

5. Then select the Primary Storage Settings icon.

6. If a check mark does not appear next to the External Memory icon,

click on the box to have it selected.

Now when you connect the cable to your computer and say Connect to Mass Storage, you should press Start and select My Computer. Now You should see a Removable Storage Icon. Click on this and your music, video, documents etc. folders should be there.

For a while I thought LG stood for Looking Grim but life's good when you can get things working your way.

Good Luck.

I have been using these batteries now for almost 6 months. They charge fast and hold their charge as advertised (I test these with a multi-meter). I also bought Eneloop at about the same time as these and actually rotate between these and the Eneloop when changing out batteries.

My experience to date has been really equivalent with regard to the Eneloop. Only wish they could make these at 1.5v instead of the 1.2. After a full charge, I find these actually top off consistently and hold at 1.354v, right in line with the Eneloop. These compare to fresh alkaline at 1.565v and fresh lithium at 1.631v. When using in some flashlight applications, the difference in voltage between the 1.2 rated hybrids and 1.5 alkaline or lithium is noticeable.

Bottom line is I would recommend these highly. I've saved bundles already on batteries and my testing confirms these do hold their charge for a very long time (slow natural discharge rate), unlike normal NiMh rechargeables.

I was skeptical about buying the Tenergy products since I read so many reviews that had negative impact. However, I am glad I did get these. The price was so reasonable and I am extremely satisfied (so far). They seem to be so much better than the Energizer rechargeables that I was previously using. I use them mainly for my MP3 player and they last 24 hours. That is about 6 hours longer than the player says they will work. I also put some in my booklight. I turned it on as a night light just to see how long they would last. I am on my 6th full night and going strong. The Centura batteries seem to be doing much better than the reviews on the regular Tenergy batteries. I purchase these because they said they would hold the charge longer than other rechargeable batteries and are called LOW SELF DISCHARGE. I purchased both AAA and 1 card of AA but have not tried the AA yet. The AAA are only 800 mAh but are great for my use. I do wish the mAh was higher but it isn't so I'll live with my 800. I bought six cards of these based on the reviews here on Amazon. No regrets, they work great. AAA batteries don't last very long, whether rechargeable or alkaline. At this price, after three uses you've made your money back, so the next hundred recharges are all gravy. Highly recommended.

I was surprised to find this set of batteries for significantly less than any others of the type, so I gave them a shot. One minor mistake I made was to assume they are pre-charged, like all other low self-discharge batteries seem to be, but they aren't. Out of the package I got about 350 mah. Still after running them through a couple charge cycles they have all provided well over their rated output. Generally I have gotten 850-900 mah.

I checked the capacity of these cells using my Maha C9000 charger. About half were over 800mAH and half were between 780 and 800mAH. Given the low price I don't think a 2.5% deviation from spec is a big deal. I haven't had them for very long but seems to work just fine.

Timex T601G Nature Sounds Clock Radio (Stereo CD Player,Digital Tuning,AM/FM Radio)

Timex T601G Nature Sounds Clock Radio
  • Wake (or sleep) to CD, nature sounds, or AM/FM radio
  • 3-inch stereo speakers
  • 18 station presets
  • Triple-alarm system
  • Sure Alarm battery backup system

I bought this clock because I am a very light sleeper and most alarm clocks scare me awake. To start, the nature sounds are not realistic and they run on a very short loop. Second, I saw the name "timex" and assumed that I was buying a quality product. One day, about 8 months after I bought the clock, I woke up to a screeching sound that wouldn't stop (like fingernails across a chalkboard). I called timex and was told that they did not manufacture this clock and that I needed to call a different company. At this other company, I got no help (the measly 90-day warranty had passed), so I exchanged it at [a local store] for another one (thank goodness I had my receipt) for another one hoping that I got a good one this time. Sorry, no luck that time either: almost a year later, the same thing happened again and I ended up chucking this ... in the trash. Please don't put yourself through the trouble of buying this product.

Buy Timex T601G Nature Sounds Clock Radio (Stereo CD Player,Digital Tuning,AM/FM Radio) Now

I bought this to replace my ten year old Sony Dream Machine which was, at the time, the best alarm clock out there. My main requirement was no analog anything. The Sony's analog volume control slowly died making the radio inaudiable when it was supposed to wake me up so I didn't want to deal with this again.

The things I would be getting over my broken Dream Machine are 100% digital controls, three separate alarms for weekday, weekend and entire week (my Sony just had weekday and weekend), battery backup, and automatic daylight savings time changes. I didn't care about the CD player or the "nature" sounds as long as they make noise. I never use snooze controls but it's nice that the alarm-off button has a distinctive shape so you know when you're hitting it instead of some other button. It's great that the time and date are set correctly before it even comes out of the box.

Features that would have been nice are "atomic clock" adjustment, weather radio, and automatic brightness adjustment (this can be adjusted manually).

So far everything works but there are a few slightly annoying things. There are six preset buttons but they're for three separate bands (AM and two FM) so you may have to switch bands for that "preset" to get the station you want, or maybe not. You have to look at the display to see which band it's on. Notice how they put "easy" presets in quotes on the box? The presents aren't instant -it takes a second for the station to come in (the Sony was always instant). The FM reception is OK but the AM is as bad as any I've heard. The high end is totally cut off (compared to the Sony) yet the selectivity is also terrible. Strong stations will overload weaker stations +10 khz away. Obviously AM wasn't a priority. The controls aren't as easy to use due to the unavoidable height needed for the CD. The Dream Machine's top was also slightly sloped forward which made them easier to reach.

I don't know how long it will last but I think it will last longer than my Dream Machine.

I purchased this item new at a local electronics store. It functions good as an alarm clock. The CD player is another story. Within the first 6 months the CD player developed problems. Any CD inserted would spin briefly and stop. The display would show "NO" for no CD inserted. A CD leanse cleaning gave me a few more months of service. Several times an hour a click is heard in the speakers. This click is soft but can be a little distracting when placed close to the bed. The useful life of this unit appears to be around 1 1.5 years. The warranty is poor at only 90 days. This is one Timex product that Can't take a licking and Won't keep on ticking.

I thought this clock would have it all. Unfortunately, I bought the clock mainly for the nature sounds, which are not realistic at all. The ocean sounds are more reminiscent of a leaky faucet than crashing surf, and the forest sounds include an owl hooting just about every eight seconds (not very soothing to me). To top it off, the radio clarity is poor, even for a clock radio. This is one gift that is being returned.

I bought one of these a few months ago, & loved it so much I had to buy another. It's very nice to have all those station presets, digital tuning, and 3 different alarms. It is simple to set up , too. It is a wonderful little unit, and I couldn't be without it.

Magnasonic MAG-MM176K AM/FM Projection Clock Radio with Dual Alarm, Auto Time Set/Restore, Temperatu

Magnasonic MAG-MM176K AM/FM Projection Clock Radio with Dual Alarm, Auto Time Set/Restore, Temperature Display, and Battery Backup
  • Automatically Sets the Time/Date & Restores Alarm Settings after Power loss
  • Projects the Time on Your Wall or Ceiling; Dual Alarms with Optional Weekend Skip
  • AM/FM Radio with Digital Station Display; Temperature & Calendar Date Display
  • Connect Your iPod or MP3 Player; Blue Backlit 3.6" LCD Screen
  • Wake to Radio/Buzzer/Time Projection

I've had this alarm clock for almost a month now and for the most part, am pleased with my purchase. The dual alarms are convenient; one time for M-F and another for weekends without having to manually change the setting every week. I know the time is always accurate I can rest secure even if there's a power failure that I will get up on time. It's compact size doesn't take up too much room on the night stand. The red ceiling projection light is soft and non-disturbing, yet it does the job. The radio is just a convenient plus and use it to listen to weather forecasts.

My one complaint is that the display light for the front of the clock is too bright, even in its 'dim' setting. It lights up my entire night stand like having a 'night-light' plugged in. It's a bother on sleepless nights. When you turn it away from you, the ceiling projection is sideways. On the bright side, (pun intended), I don't have to switch on a light if I make a bathroom trip in the middle of the night. This bothersome feature is why I gave it a 4-rating instead of a 5. Perhaps Magnasonic can work on improving this feature.

This clock is pretty good over-all. The radio is a nice feature but the speakers just don't quite cut it. Too much over-all distortion in the sound quality. The clock works well, and seems to maintain good time. Easy too use buttons and nice alarm features like M-F one time set. Two seperate alarms and the Clock does project very well plus the ability to flip your projection display 180 degrees. The one feature that needs improvement is the display light on the unit itself. It is so bright even in the dim mode that it lights up the room. So if you prefer to sleep in the dark you might want to think about this one feature. On the bright side I purchased this clock from Amazon and all was handled very well. Easy to purchase and delivery was as notified.

I literally searched for months for a clock radio with certain features. I wanted all of these features in one unit: digital radio tuner, large number display, option to dim and/or turn off display light, two alarms, a time projection, easy to program, a small footprint, AND all that at a reasonable price. This little radio has all of that and then some. I love the weight of it...sturdy. It has a contemporary look and feel to it. All in all I am very pleased with this purchase.

Magnasonic Projection Clock Radio with Dual Alarms, Self Set and Temperature DisplayI bought this clock for my 90 year old mother so she could tell the time at night. Worked great for 3 weeks then failed. I called the Warranty number and was told to send the clock back and they would replace it. Sounds good except the Warranty company is in Canada. I used UPS ground for $16.00 on a $24 clock. Okay, I may not be real smart. Extra pricy per UPS due to international shipping. I chose to go ahead and ship. So now the clock cost is $40.00. When it reached Canada, the Canadian Customs attached a $33. Broker Fee to deliver the clock to MESA the warranty co. So now my $24 clock will cost $73.00. By the way MESA customer service reps confirmed it is too expensive to fix them when they get there; they just send out new ones. They will not pay the $33 nor ship me a new one until I pay the $33.00. I suppose I could fight this but for $24.00??? At least you are now warned. Plan on no warranty if you buy this clock.

Amazon did help by refunding me the $33. Broker fee on a one time exception basis. I decided to start over with a LaCross Projection Clock instead and I used Amazon due to their help.

I bought this clock because I've never had a projector clock before and I love blue... so since it lights up blue on the face I just had to get it. I know others have complained about the brightness even when on the dim setting. But don't let that discourage you. There is also a setting for the face to turn off completely and then if you hit the snooze button in the middle of the night to check the time the face comes on for about 15 or 20 seconds and goes back off. If you don't want to lean over, use the projector on the ceiling or wall. It controls the alarms to go on only m-f or m-t.. whatever you want. The temperature gauge is accurate and I find it handy. My only complaint would be that the projector color is red rather than blue lol

I bought this specifically for my daughter's room to replace a clock radio that ran fast on time. The stereo itself is perfect for her room, but I am going to have to go out and get a small clock as well; since this one does not have a backlight for the clock. It is very difficult to see even with the lights on in her room. If you are looking for a room stereo only, this is a nice little one. If you are looking for a clock radio, you should look at another product.

Also, when I bought this it came with Amazon's free shipping.

Do not let the size of this stereo turn you away from the purchase. it has a crystal clear sound. It is very easy to use. And because it is small, it will fit on a library shelf or on any small shelf. I have nothing negative to mention. If you need a small stereo for your young daughter who enjoys listening music and you can make her happy plus have some peace in your living room. It plays MP3 too. Way too cool. I guess it is true. Good things comes in small packages.

The unit (Magnasonic MAG-MS857 CD Player Stereo) produced a reasonably nice sound at first (sound was absent at the lower frequencies), however, the CD player in the unit died in 1.5 months, upon the second time the CD player was used. I unplugged the unit and plugged it back in the first time. This allowed us to use it one more time. The second time the CD player stopped working, nothing that we did would "reset" the unit or fix the problem. Contacted Amazon and they sent me an RMA for the item.

-Good service on Amazon's part.

-If I was only using this as an MP3 amplifier, it might have worked for a while.

-CD dead in 6 weeks.

bad unit.

I purchased this product in January 2011. I have a small home, and it works very well.

I use it for playing CD's and a connection for my kids Ipod. Plenty of volume for my small space, neat, compact.

I like it.

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She wanted something she could play CD's and her Mp3 player on. This does both, though she couldn't get it to play her Mp3 at first. Then, I remembered reading in a review on here that you had to really push the cord into the outlet firmly. Tried it and it worked!

The only possible drawback is that it is not a booming and loud system. I am OK with this, because I don't want my daughter blasting all of us with her music and it is plenty loud enough to listen to in her room.

  • Made for iPod and iPhone - iPod and iPhone authentication IC, Play and charge your device at the same time, Includes RCA stereo audio cable, component video cable, mounting hardware and instructions, Remote control: requires 2 AA batteries (pre-installed), Powered via the built-in AC power cable

I wanted to buy this from amazon last week but it wasn't 79.99. I ended up getting in from K-Mart(I know right?). This thing does pack a punch. It greatly amplifies the sound on my tv, it can get really loud and sports some nice bass for a simple system. I mainly wanted this for my TV, but it works great with your ipod/iphone as well (except for the 5). The remote that is included is very good! You can turn the device on and off and change the source of where the sound comes from and the eq. I would recommend this to anyone who isn't an audiophile and just wants to get a much better sound from their flat screen tv which are notorious for having poor stock speakers.

first of all, I really enjoy the clock and ipod dock, its great, but the functionality of the product is whack, it says you can hook up to a tv and watch videos. Well, good luck with that because I work on electronics and this kind of stuff comes easy to me, and this sound bar is not easy to use! the ease of use is not ease at all, the way it works just doesn't make sense, the engineering is sub par at best

This product was exactly what I was looking for and was disappointed that I couldn't find one to work. The first one I received did not have any working inputs besides the iPod dock so I was not able to hook it up to my TV. The replacement bar had all of the inputs working but produced a high pitch noise whenever it was turned on. So I gave up and moved onto another make and model of soundbar. I can't recommend this one to anybody.

Great features are the iPod / iPhone dock, ease of mounting and it's ability to 'learn' another remote. Down sides for me are short cord--need to be within 6 feet of an outlet and the sound quality is good, not great so the volume doesn't carry too far, but really it's okay for the price range (the built in subwoofer is so-so). I'll probably upgrade someday to a $500 sound bar but for now it really beats my old massive stereo system with all the components, wires and cords. I'm using it in my music studio and really love how streamlined it is for playing tunes for my students.

I've used this radio/ipod clock for several months now and it is pretty decent albeit a little large for a nightstand. It does look good in a subtle understated way, although they might have put the ipod dock on the side where it's a little less obtrusive. It does charge the ipod while it's in the cradle, which is something not every dock can do.

The adapter runs hot, which should have been a warning for what eventually happened. A muted popping sound and then a burning plastic smell started wafting up from my nightstand yesterday morning...I traced the source of the sound and smell to the adapter. After removing it and calling the company, I was told that I had to pay twenty bucks for a new one. I declined, since I could purchase one for much less locally (and I thought they should have offered to comp it since it wasn't even a year old). The main source of worry is that this might have started a fire had I not been there when it happened. Be aware that you might want to buy a better quality adapter for this if you have your heart set on this product.

This is a great little iPod player, perfect for a bedroom, office or small apartment. It's really basic (can't program radio stations) but excellent for someone who doesn't need something fancy. I've had mine for about five months and am extremely pleased.

I bought one of these from a 'bulls-eye' type store for $65 recently. I had originally purchased it for home but ended up buying a second on clearance to use at the office later. It's very well constructed and great at the office but there are several poor design features for the home user.

My biggest complaint is adjusting time and tuning settings. Be prepared to hold down the tuning buttons to scan through the clock minute by minute or the radio channel by channel. This would be a minor complaint if there were preset channels since I don't expect to have to change the time frequently. This isn't really a problem a work though since I use the iPod dock or leave the radio on for quiet background noise anyways.

My other complaint is that in my bedroom at night the back light is too bright even at the lowest dimmer setting. The entire room is blue enough to cause night blindness when I have to leave the room for any reason. This yielded the inevitable stubbed toe and cursing b/c I was too impatient to wait for my eyes to readjust. My quick solution was to open up the box and add a switch on the back light LED and wire it to the back panel of the box. (the box is real wood by the way) An even faster solution would be to just cutting a wire on the LED but it is nice to have the option to turn the LED back on during the day. Of course this isn't a problem in my office anyways.

Overall I'm happy with the radio and it serves it's purpose.

Pros: Good sound, sturdy construction, iPod dock and integrated remote control are nice. The external FM antenna is nice for large offices where reception is difficult.

Cons: Incremental adjustment for all settings is annoying, the clock/alarm, date, and tuning are set by by minute, day, and decimal respectively. No presets for radio. Back light is too bright.

This iPhone speaker system fails to prevent the dreaded signal popping "bzzt-bip-bip-bip-bip" that can happen when iPhones are in close proximity to speakers such as when charging next to your clock radio. Since this radio is MEANT to dock an iPhone, you would have thought the manufacturer would have shielded the proper components so this wouldn't happen. But both my iPhone 4 and my wife's 3S make the popping sound constantly making the iPhone dock useless turning this into a very expensive AM/FM radio.

Bought this for my husband for Christmas. He loves it. The design is very aesthetically pleasing and it sounds great! Well worth the price.

I have had the Eton Scorpion for about a month.I use it everyday. Camped with it 4 times already.

Reasons I bought this was ...

1:audio input. To basically have a solar/crank powered speaker for my iphone (extends iphones battery life)

2. To crank charge USB devices.

3.Mainly to have something to charge stuff ( mainly iPhone 3GS ) during power outages, no sun, night time , emergencies.

4. Bottle opener. Because I am tired of not be able to open my drinks??? This space should have been used to store earbuds,an extra long wire antenna or perhaps a little raincoat/bag for the scorpion.

Verdict:

Solar charges itself in full sun in a few hours.

Crank charges itself to full charge with about 300 cranks(3 minutes) giving about 45 minutes radio time( much more if you use headphones) and Hours of flashlight time.

Even when the radio dies the flashlight will keep going for about 30 minutes or more.

Power input is there but no adaptor included. This unit doesn't take removable rechargable batteries(AA) but it could be incorporated through the power input if one knew how to add up AA or AAA batteries voltage to match the input voltage of the input.

Solar Charging iPhone: not going to happen without rewiring it from the inside. Panel is too small anyway and not worth it , would take days to charge. Get a Goal Zero Guide Ten portable solar charging kit. solar charges an iPhone in an hour and charges 4 AA batteries too.just awesome!

Crank charging is the only way they designed this device to charge an iphone. No charging from the solar panel or from the scorpions stored collected energy in its internal battery.

Crank charging iphone:tricky but it works. To get the iPhone to accept it and to make any sort of charging possible ,follow these steps:

1. use an iPhone cable not a knock off.

2. Set the phone brightness to the lowest setting

3. turn off wifi

4. go into airplane mode or at least turn off 3G .

5. Get comfortable becuase you'll be cranking for at least 7 minutes(2 songs on a radio, or a few commercial breaks on tv)

6. Here is where people get discouraged and fail.

As soon as you crank, the iPhone may reject the charging source with a pop up saying "incompatible accessory" and you'll feel the crank become too easy to crank.

The trick is you have to sort of jump start it to get the phone to accept the crank charge. To do this you'll have to do a quick half crank( like starting a mower or kick starting a motorcycle) and then you'll hear and feel the phone giving resistance on the crank which means it accepted it . You'll keep cranking after the first quick half crank but you'll slow down for a second to lock it in and then your in the zone. You can adjust your cranking speed from here forward. The iPhone will show it's being charged and the screen will eventually turn off so take a mental note of the battery percentage so you can see how you've done 7 minutes later.

Depending on how you've cranked ,you'll probably achieve an additional 1 or 3 percent of battery life. Yes this is not great or anything but it could help in an emergency to get that text or call out.

I figure to almost fully charge the iPhone would take somewhere between 3-4 hours of cranking.Good luck with that.

Even a bicycle crank generator would still take alot of effort and nit much less time to charge an iPhone because you can only charge it so fast before you damage the battery. So for the portability factor of the Erin scorpion as a crank charger , I would say it's doing it's job the best it can do.

Moving on:

I have taken this camping 4 times since I've owned .still works .I use the crank alot to charge the radio and light .mainly because I like to use the audio input so I can crank my iPhone music through a the scorpions speaker. This means 3 minutes of cranking for ever 45 minutes of using the speaker.

The light is great. Last a long time and lights up an area pretty well. When your walking , it shines a big circle in front if you and a med circle to the left and right of you.. A Nice spread.

The very end of the handle broke on my last camping trip so I had to learn to crank with out it. When I got home , I drilled a hole in the end of the handle and bolted the piece back on with a screw and locknut from skateboard hardware (last forever).

Pros and cons:

Pros:

-audio input

-Nice size solar panel to charge its radio/flashlight.

-cranks to full charge in 2-3 minutes.

-45 minutes radio(half volume)/ couple hours light.

-nice rugged rubber shell.

-antenna stores away safely.

pretty water resistant( left it in rain for a day, after drying it still works although it shouldn't )

-does crank charge USB devices including iPhones if your desperate.

-The caribeaner hook thing is nice to have. If it breaks I'll bolt that back on too.

Cons:

can't solar charge USB devices.

-can't charge USB devices from internal battery.

-doesn't take removable batteries.at night you have to crank charge to use the radio more than 45 minutes which goes by pretty fast.

part if handle broke but fixes easy and now is stronger than before .

-radio tunes one station at a time , no station memory.

The new Eton Raptor is bigger and the next step up to the scorpion with a bigger solar panel and lithium battery but it has no crank charge ability. If the scorpion had no crank charge ability it would be useless.

Since I have already had to modify my scorpions handle , here are my plans to further modify it.

-remove the bottle opener and install a mini aa battery charger(from a solar garden light, they are basically mini solar aa rechargers) and wire it so they charge using the scorpions solar panel or crank charge .

rewire inside so I can switch the radio from solar, internal battery, external AA batteries.

-rewire so USB devices can use solar charger, internal battery, or external aa batteries.

Maybe change the internal battery to lithium ion.

make a rain coat with a clear window for solar panel and pockets for a extended wire antenna, earbuds, and additional rechargeable AA batteries.

-if I'm feeling reall ambitious , remove the solar panel and make three solar panels that fold out from it ( like a book) to have better solar charging during cloudy days or triple it's solar power intake and charging time during full sun days.

If Eton did this instead of making the Raptor I would gladly pay $200+ and buy one (or two of them) because it would be all that I would need and I could carry much less with me when hiking etc.

Hope you liked my overly detailed longwinded review!

I wanted a small portable radio for backpacking and had researched Eton's other products in the past. None of those radios had all the features I wanted. When I saw the scorpion I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a radio that would not be too heavy to carry in my overnight pack but included features such as line-in, backup cell phone usb charger, and weather alert channels.

After receving my Scorpion the other day I have used it extensivly and am very pleased with the device. It is very well built and is perfect for some music around the fire after a long day of hiking.

As far as each features are concerned. Flashlight Decent LED flashlight. Good for finding your way around in the dark. Not my primary flashlight but its on par with every other crank flashout out there. Radio Digital tuner is great. Picks up stations very well (I live in the middle of nowhere). Sound quality The sound quality is what I expected. It is about the same quality as most standard clock radios. It's nothing special but I wanted a rugged radio that didnt have the hassle of making sure you have charged batteries. If sound quality and size is a top priority look for portable iPod docks such as JBL's On-Stage. It does play loud. Note: when using the line-in function the volume control on the unit does not function. Volume is controlled by external device (ipod, phone, etc).

Overall its a great portable small radio for any type of outdoor adventure. I have since used it for picnics and bbq's where larger radios are more of a hassle then what they are worth.

During a week long camping trip-The antenna is too short the radio reception is poor no matter what band you are on. On a full charge at moderate volume your listening time is about 30 minutes. It takes alot of cranking or time in bright sun to charge. It was rained onlightly for about 15 minutes, it stopped working and showed an odd display & condensation in the display windowhowever after baking in the sun for a few hours it dryed out an worked again. The buttons to change the station can't be located well with your fingers, they are all stacked together in a row. You cannot charge a phone via the USB port unless you are turning the crank [and turning and turning and turning]. Except for the rain issue it does seem to take shock/drops.

ORIGINAL REVIEW (5-Star): This is a very nice little unit and it performs better than I expected. The hand crank feels solid, unlike others I've felt in the past that you worry will break quickly. The clip has a nice stiff spring in it and feels very solid. The radio reception is amazing and the retractable antenna is more than 7" long, so fine tuning is easy. The speaker is about 1.25" in diameter, but the sound is pretty good. Most of my vehicles don't get FM or AM this well. The clock is a nice feature and the display includes a battery gauge (similar to most cell phones). The LED light works well, but the three lights cast a strange shadow on the ground. It appears to be about as powerful as an average headlamp. The bottle opener has a metal ring all the way around, so you're not prying a bottle open against the plastic side. I've broken more than one widget when opening a bottle against a plastic surface...nice touch. I haven't had a chance to try the charging feature yet on my cell.

Overall the design and build quality is top notch. We're not weekend campers, but with two kids this will be a great addition to our trip gear. Small, lightweight, rugged and functional.

The only complaint I have is the placement of the antenna. With the unit lying so the speaker and solar panels are facing up, the antenna has a limited area to move around. But I consider this a minor issue.

Note: The dimensions are for the main body of the Scorpion, and doesn't include the clip. The overall length is 6.5", and the other dimensions seem accurate.

See my response to this post for an updated report...

When I saw this product announcement I put it immediatly on my Amazon wish list as I wanted to suppliment the Black-N-Decker one that I have which has similar features as this one except no solar charging. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase as the Scorpion has a very sturdy shell and a crank that feels like it will last a long time unlike other crank lights I own. The light is also brighter than others I have owned as well. I like the fact that I can clip this on a backpack and such however I wish the clip were on the crank side of the light as it's hard to have the solar cell face outward if you're on a hike for charging. It sits "unnatural" on the backpack the way it currently clips on. Minor annoyance though. One thing I definitely wish was included in the instructions though was average charging rates for the solar cell. The light has a batter meter on it and mine came with only one bar from being full. Just for grins I put in in the front seat of my truck while I was at work to see if it would fill that last bar since my truck sits in the sun all day. No luck and even after two days it had not fully charged. Granted it may not have had full sun for a full 8 hours during the work day. I haven't cranked it enough yet to full charge it but as mentioned only minor annoyances. Oh and as mentioned in the other review, I haven't been able to get the USB to charge any of my phones. This may be due to needing to crank it to charge as it does not appear to use the solar cell or internal battery to charge the USB devices. I think it said that in the manual as well but once again it would be nice to get a chart of average charge rates and such.

Overall I will most likely be purchasing another one of these as it's a solid device. I have one in the trailer for camping and such and I'll have one put in my emergency kit.
