Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen, 3G, 5 MP Camera, A-GPS, 32 GB, MicroSD Slot, and Integrat

Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen, 3G, 5 MP Camera, A-GPS, 32 GB, MicroSD Slot, and Integrated Ovi Applications--U.S. Version with WarrantyHello, I shared this review with the black version of this phone, but I wanted to share it with this one as well so we who bought this version can get some insight. :)

I am a phone app developer and have had some 'face time' with the Nokia N97. I'll let you know some of the more in depth details so you can decide if this is the right phone for you or not. There are many positive features about this phone, but a few potential pitfalls for power users as well. Average users will probably never notice any of the pitfalls, but probably will never use some of the best features of this phone either to justify the cost.

This is the new Nokia flagship phone and it packs almost every feature anyone could ever want. It has a DVD quality camcorder with sample videos found here:

http://www.vimeo.com/4352001

Notice how well the mic picks up the creeks of the boats in Monte Carlo, and how rich the colors look. That is due to the Carl Zeiss lens Nokia has put in. The quality is also great and can be sent directly to the TV via the TV out cable, but I would recommend making a DVD from the memory card as the quality of the cable isn't as good as the DVD quality this phone provides. Video starts up quickly, which is an improvement from the previous versions.

The pictures taken by this phone are of very good quality. Many consumers are fooled by 'megapixels' (mp). Well folks, after 5mp or so, mp doesn't mean much. All it does is make your picture size better, it does NOT increase the QUALITY. I assume most of us aren't pro graphic artists that need huge pictures to zoom in on the most minute detail, and if you are, then you probably don't need this review :P

The lens and picture quality of this phone is superb, but not as good as the Samsung 8 sadly. It is by far tho, one of the best mobile phone cameras around. You can notice some problems in darker areas and they went with a dual LED flash instead of the Xeon gas flash. The Xeon gas flash would have provided much better lighting in low light situations, however as a phone enthusiast I feel it's good enough.

Judge for yourself.

This phone is a TRUE smart phone OS which means you can download apps for it such as VPN software to connect to your office network and apps such as PUTTY or RDP clients to remote control real computers at the house/office. With 3G speeds the potential is limitless.

Now for the bad. Nokia decided to use the old ARM II CPU found in the N85, 95, etc. phones but increased the clockspeed (mhz) slightly. We were looking forward to the new TI cpu which would have provided much better speeds, at the cost of battery life. They also stuck with 128mb ram with about 80mb available after boot up. I don't know about you but after I load up all of my apps and get cranking, I eat that up. I was able to notice some slow down in the pre-build when I:

-opened up several websites w/ flash content

-ran the music player

-opened up 'widget' applications

-tried basic functionality

Most users will probably never do that. If you are a power user, then you probably already know about the Samsung Omnia HD which boasts of similer features, but also the new faster CPU and dedicated GFX chip which means you can play Ipod type 3d games with ease. The final point is with the potentially underpowered CPU, you will not be able to play the super high resolution videos the Samsung can play.

Finally this phone has the slower 3G speeds which don't reach 7mbps, will you need 7mbps? Probably not. I think for 99% of users, the current 3G speeds offered by this phone are fine.

I tried out the phone and pre-ordered, I can't wait to get it. I can't wait to develop some 'widget' applications for it and really see the power of this phone with the newer more stable build.

Thank you for reading this, feel free to respond, yell, scream, or ask any questions!

When I first learned of the n97's release, I was excited. I had been waiting for Nokia to release another ground-breaking phone, like the n95 of years ago. The n96 wasn't it, nor was the n85. Then the n97 came with a touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard to boot! I was sold at once, but did all of my research anyway and found it to be full of innovative ideas and modern must-haves. I bought it nearly two weeks ago at a reasonable discount from NokiasUSA after Amazon ran out of stock and jacked up the price.

**If you read the specs, you will find all of the high points, but here are some more:

-I found the phone to be fast and responsive when given input. The keyboard is phenomenal the key spacing and feel is just right and the offset space bar is not as big of a deal as it is often made out to be. The only thing I could ask for is a little click to acknowledge the button was pushed, though if the sound is on the phone makes a small noise. The keyboard could have been even bigger yet if they dropped the D-Pad, which I rarely find myself using as it is a touchscreen (maybe make it a secondary feature for other keys?).

-The GPS unit quickly finds a satellite signal (faster than most Tom-Toms) and accurately places you on a detailed map. The turn-by-turn voice directions work well, except they do not read the street name. Best of all, it doesn't make you agree to do-not-drive-as-you-use-this-device waivers every time the program launches.

-The call quality is excellent.

-No contract and not bogged down with un-deletable carrier apps and tacky logos that remind you who bought your soul.

**The bad and the ugly:

-My first thought when I handled it was, "a little chintzy, eh?" It does give off the impression for a little while, primarily because of the battery cover. They used a plastic, snap-on/ pry-off cover whose snaps are easily bent out of shape, but did not break and easily bent back. The rest of the construction, especially the hinge, seems to be very solid now that I have used it extensively.

-The 5MP camera takes remarkable photos and videos, unless you want to use the flash, which is too close to the lens and whites out a third of the image. Thinking about this more, I decided Nokia has used a very similar camera since September of 2006 when the first n95 debuted and such a quirk is unacceptable in something that has been around the technology world for so long.

-The battery life is terrible. With normal use, it will most likely get 24-30 hours.

-Reception is bad. The internal antenna does not pickup signal where my Blackberry does and my Samsung (4 years ago) before it did, to include my apartment in Boston (not exactly East Reeve, Wisconsin).

-The FM transmitter is hardly worth having. After trying numerous stations I know to be unused in my area, the reception in my newer Audi with rear-mounted antenna was terrible unless I held the phone out the sunroof. I assume if you have a hood mounted antenna, it would be a little better (does anyone know?).

-The resistive touchscreen is outdated and somewhat unresponsive. Resistive touchscreens are great if you wear gloves, and if they are huge, but that doesn't happen on a mobile phone. Resistive touchscreens use a grid-like system to figure out where they've been touched, as they have invisible lines that make a grid across the screen. When the selected area is touched, the corresponding up/down and left/right lines are pushed against sensors on the screen's edge and send the information to the processor. Capacitive screens measure minute differences in its electric field cause by the conductive human body and are generally much more accurate.

-The inertia scrolling is not as one would expect, probably because of the aforementioned screen. It does not matter how fast the screen is flicked, the information displayed travels the same measly distance and stops rather quickly no matter what, if it works at all. Navigating web pages is probably the only reason I would use the provided D-Pad just because the scrolling with the touchscreen is so terrible.

-The accelerometer, which detects the direction the phone is tilted, is often incorrect and the phone is very slow to change the screen's display between portrait and landscape.

-Oftentimes, the phone must be unlocked 2 or 3 times to get the LCD's backlight to turn on. This may be a software or a hardware malfunction, I do not know.

-The talk and end button are not raised but should be, especially because the phone does not acknowledge them having been pressed for a second after. Plus, real buttons are always preferred.

**Then there's the software:

-The user interface is not so good. Every application has an options menu, but after the application has been customized, you probably will not find much need for any of the other options except exit, which is buried at the bottom of the menu and needs to be scrolled to.

The phone screen is inefficiently laid out. On the screen there is a "Call" and "End" button, both of which are physical keys on the phone itself, as well as a "Contacts" button which can be found on the previous screen. I would rather just see bigger numbers. Also, the phone is setup to display two lines of numbers and forces a single number from the area code on on the second line when I would rather like to see bigger number buttons and ALL US numbers on a single line.

-The homescreen widgets do not update as freely as one might like, the AccuWeather is rarely connected and my Hotmail account will ONLY refresh manually. The FaceBook app is good.

-The homescreen has a button on it to change the sound profile, but tapping the power button brings up the same menu Nokia should just get rid of the redundancy and dedicate the space to, well, uhhh, anything else.

-No QWERTY keyboard option on the touchscreen.

-Being able to run multiple apps is great, but switching between them shouldn't mean a fight with the options menu, there should be an external button to switch between them.

-The homescreen has an option to compose a new message, but not one to read old messages. The button should be dedicated to going into the messenger application instead.

-Half of the menus require a double touch while the other half require a single touch.

-Plus a dozen smaller "Oh, that's silly" features not worth mentioning.

-My phone has needed to be reset because one or more different things were not working correctly at least once a day, though it has never frozen completely. Once, strangely, the touchscreen would highlight the selected app/item, but fail to execute the command completely.

Overall, it is a good phone, but certainly not worth the money. I recommend you wait for the first major software update to be released and reviewed before purchasing.

UPDATE (4 July) I've made updates on the n97 (Black) page.

Buy Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen, 3G, 5 MP Camera, A-GPS, 32 GB, MicroSD Slot, and Integrat Now

Have had a world of problems including roaming issues (popped my SIM into another phone and it worked so was not the provider), constant issues with the software locking up (often had to pull the battery to wake it up --and that takes ages for it to reboot), battery life not typical of Nokia (sadly lacking), flash failed after a few months ... pictures all foggy .... major disappointment. Plug in charger died after a couple months ... USB charger problematic, had to source another.

I don't know if i simply got a bad phone. But since I shipped to a location out of the US, trying to get it returned was complicated .... so suffered thru! I really loved my N95, but this felt like a step back. Had I the option to do over, i would choose otherwise! Sorry Nokia, this one just didn't cut it!

I have this phone since it came out. After more than a year i know all the goods and the bads of this phone. Unlike other reviewers having this phone for a week or so.

Out of the box this phone was not working properly. The backlight won't go on when i would unlock the phone. I did research and find a new firmware wich fixed the issue.

Here is all the bads:

-the photos made with flash look awfull.glare shows in almost every picture.

-bad design for camera slider. Lots of dust gets there. Also sometimes it slides by itself in my pocket.

-photo gallery is slow and still doesn't have option to upload photos to facebook. There is an app for viewing the pix wich after one year is still in beta. Can't be set as a default photo viewer.

-in one year and still didn't get used to this keyboard. At the beginning of a sentence i have to press twice for a special character & number. In the middle of the sentence only once.

often i would not be able to answer a phone call. The screen is unresponsive.

-The answer call and hang up '' buttons'' to close to eachother. hard press buttons woud be better instead of touch ones. I could answer a call while driving without looking at the phone. Than slide to activate loudspeaker.

-the shiny silver frame peeded off showing cheap platic.

-No stopwatch and countdown.

-i had like 10gb of music in it (out of 32gb max) and it takes forever to scroll thru the music files.

-Nokia maps is a joke. Would never find my location where google maps find it on the spot.

-bad memory management. I have to delete all the time cookies and cachee to make like 20mb space in the phone.

-it takes like 5 seconds to open a simple sms.sometimes even more.

-slow browser. I have opera installed so i stop usind the default one. It would be nice to be able to set the opera browser as default

-ovi store is a failure. no usefull programs to be found there .

I had to send the phone back for repairs last year in august. The headphone was not connected to it but showing that its connected. So the only way to hear someone on the phone was to activate the speaker or connect some headphones. They fixed it , did a factory reset and installed the latest firmware. No change on performance. I guess symbian sucks.

Yes. The operating sistem is worst out there.

I could go more and more but i have to go. This review was written from a HTC my touch 4G. Sorry for the typos. I will never buy a nokia again. At least until they catch up with samsung, htc and apple.

Peace.

Having bought this for my wife, I have lost all respect for Nokia. This is their flagship??? She is ok with it but isn't very technical minded and doesn't tend to use it for much except calls. Call quality is terrible. FM Transmitter does NOT work. 32 Gig harddrive, yet you can only store a couple apps on the phone at a time. I absolutely abhor this phone, and yes I've done an update to the OS for her. BAD BAD BAD in almost every way. Shockingly bad in my opinion for the money spent! Better off with Blackberry, iPhone or Android. I have almost never given a bad review to a product bought from Amazon. But seriously, this is the worst product we've ever had the misfortune of spending over $500 on. Never again Nokia!

iHome iH12 Cube Clock Radio with Dock for iPod (Black)

iHome iH12 Cube Clock Radio with Dock for iPod
  • Compatibility: iPod mini 1G; iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3G; iPod 4G, 5G, 5.5G, 6G; iPod touch 1G
  • Wake or sleep to AM/FM radio or iPod with programmable sleep; dual alarm for two individual wake times
  • Battery backup maintains clock and alarm settings in case of power failure
  • Includes full-function remote control
  • Auxiliary line-in for use with external audio devices

Good size, good sound, good basic design..... but 2 problems.

1) The control buttons on top have raised designs to distinguish them, but not raised enough. So you hunt and peck for the right button in the dark searching to turn off the alarm. I've placed a very small blob of clear glue from my glue-gun next to the off button to find it more easily.

2) I have an older version of the iPod mini. Out of the 5 plug-in adapters for different iPods that come with the unit.... NONE of them are for the older version of my iPod mini. It still works... but I have to be careful plugging it in and taken it out and not bumping it when plugged in.

I received this today. It's a nice little unit just the right size for my nightstand. And one of the main reasons I bought it was because I couldn't find another clock radio that didn't light up the entire room the dimmer works great.

Sound is just OK when listening to the Ipod. And as expected, the tiny little wire antenna for the radio isn't great. It only works well if you're holding it.

The only real problem was that the remote wasn't included. The box states that it's not included, and there's an order form inside to purchase the remote for $19.99.

I should also mention that the sound can be improved if you put it in 3D mode. But you need the remote control to do that! LOL

Update:If I could, I would change this to just one or two stars. I did the research Ihome used to include the remote. Now they don't. (I emailed this to amazon, and they'll change the product description some day soon.) The size and looks are great for what I need, but the poor sound quality, along with an added $20 price tag just to get the remote is ridiculous. I could live without the remote except as the previous reviewer mentioned: Without it you have to sit up in bed to use any of the buttons, because they're flat and you can't simply feel for them.

I'll never buy another Ihome product.

The sound quality is horrible. I could hear "white noise" coming from the unit while listening to the radio and iPod. If you actually want to listen to what people are saying, then this unit is not for you -all of the words were muffled together. Not very good at tuning in radio stations (am and fm). It has a feature where you can plug other devices into it (through the cord provided one end plugs in the back of the iHome and the other can plug into the headset part of the portable players), like a portable CD player or cassette player and listen to them you have to control the volume through your portable players and the sound quality is such a disappointment. I would not recommend this product at all. If you are going to spend this much money on a unit, at least pick a unit (probably not an iHome) that has better sound quality.

Want iHome iH12 Cube Clock Radio with Dock for iPod (Black) Discount?

Overall I liked the features of this iPod clock radio. Unfortunately at low volumes (i.e. volumes you would listen to as you relax to go to sleep) the background noise/hiss was nearly as loud as the music or voice (e.g. talk radio). The hiss sounds like what you used to hear on audio tapes without a noise reduction switch, and occurs in all audio sources including radio and iPod. I don't know if this is a flaw in the circuitry of this model or just my unit. Some people may not notice or care, and I realize this isn't particularly expensive audio equipment, but this is something I just don't expect from today's digital audio at any reasonable price. There are no controls on this unit that might adjust the background noise. I also called iHome support and they walked me through resetting the unit, but that didn't fix it.

I've had this alarm clock for about three months now. I purchased it to replace the 16-year old alarm clock that I had been using previously. Overall, this unit has fulfilled my needs I like the choices it gives in level of brightness of the screen, that the sound slowly fades in when the alarm starts, and that it has two alarms (great for a weekday and weekend setup). Sound quality is okay; I wouldn't use it as my primary radio in any space, but for an alarm clock, it's sufficient. My ipod (120 GB ipod classic 6G version) has worked in it with no problems; both random shuffle and playlists work with the wake up feature, so you can design a playlist specifically for wake up if you want. Mine did come with a remote, although I've only used it to turn on the 3-D sound, which is a definite improvement over the standard set up. Setting the alarms was not entirely intuitive in my opinion, but not too hard to learn either. I can understand the criticism of the snooze button not being raised enough, and the power button is right next to the snooze in the layout, which means you can accidentally hit it while searching for the snooze button. I think it would have been a better design to have placed it at the other edge of the keypad, further away from the snooze button.

Speaking of the snooze button, here's my biggest issue with the radio it turns the alarm off after an hour, regardless of whether you've been using the snooze or not. I can understand having it automatically shut off so that if you accidentally leave it on, you're not irritating neighbors or roommates all morning. However, this automatic shutoff means that if you had set the alarm to 6 AM and you press the snooze for the seventh time (like on those days that you'd set the alarm earlier to give you time to get up and exercise) at 6:54, your alarm is not going back off again. So fellow frequent snooze button users, be aware of this "feature" and make sure you're getting up before the alarm shuts itself off.

3 Handsets~ Uniden Dct-5280 2.4 Ghz DSS Cordless Phone with Speakerphone/ Digital Answering System /

3 Handsets~ Uniden Dct-5280 2.4 Ghz DSS Cordless Phone with Speakerphone/ Digital Answering System / Caller Id
  • 2.4 GHz digital spread spectrum
  • Caller ID/call waiting compatible
  • Expandable to 4 handsets
  • Integrated digital answering system
  • New message waiting indicator; headset compatible

I have had many cordless phones with varying results. With that experience I can tell you that this Uniden product exceeds any other I have owned. Physically, the phone is very sleek in design and comfort of use. The base unit, with a very nice digital answering system is simple to program using the voice confirmations the system provides. The handset menu functions and soft-keys operate nicely and are also very easily programmed. There is a very nice selection of options for personalizing the phone to your needs. The battery life has been excellent, including a battery strength indicator on the display. In addition, we also added a second handset to this expandable system by merely placing the expansion handset into the base cradle. The only drawback is a minor one in which you must program the second handset manually, not a major task. The expansion handset also provides very nice intercom options, walkie-talkie like features, and is a nice value at $... The system we replaced with the Uniden was much more expensive with fewer options and poor performance.

We use a wireless network for internet connections, and the phone system works perfectly without interference or signal loss.

We are very pleased with this system and would highly recommend it. Simply put, the very best telephone we've owned.

Buy 3 Handsets~ Uniden Dct-5280 2.4 Ghz DSS Cordless Phone with Speakerphone/ Digital Answering System / Now

I have had my Uniden phone now for just under a month. I bought it to replace an IBM phone that started having problems within a few months of purchase. The Uniden phone has been great. Reception is clear as a bell and it has a ton of features that I love, including volume controls on both the handset and the base. It also features 16 different ringer options, and the ability to assign ringers to certain callers (so you'll always know if it's someone you actually want to talk to or not). The digital answering system works wonderfully as well, and is very easy to operate. That feature alone saves me [money] on voice mail from my phone company! I highly recommend this phone to anyone wanting a high quality 2.4 GHz DSS system. UPDATE: I've now had this phone for over a year and I am still very happy with it. I haven't had any problems with the battery yet. I've dropped the receiver from high up at least five times, but this phone just takes a licking and keeps on working great! The only minor complaint I have is that you have to be careful putting the handset back into the base if you have it mounted on a wall...otherwise it tips forward and falls. Still a phone I'd recommend to anyone.

I am very picky about my phones, and after much research and experience with this phone, I think it is safe to say that it is a terrific phone. I bought several phones that would suit my multi-handset needs, including a different Uniden model, and returned them shortly after because either the features were lacking, or because the sound quality was poor. However with the DCT 5280, the sound quality is great, as is the range. In addition to this, the features of the phone are outstanding, including distinctive rings, speaker phone built into both the base and handset, and the ability to use the handsets as intercoms or walky-talky style units away from the base (like at the mall) and standard AA size rechargeable batteries, allowing for great flexibility to my needs. This said, it is important to note that the sheer amount of features does make the phone complicated to begin with, so if you are somewhat techno-phobic, perhaps this phone isn't right for you, but otherwise I highly recommend this phone (along with the additional handsets) to anyone who is in the market for a great cordless phone.

Want 3 Handsets~ Uniden Dct-5280 2.4 Ghz DSS Cordless Phone with Speakerphone/ Digital Answering System / Discount?

A bit pricy, but worth every penny.

PROS:

Great quality speaker system on the handset (major plus).

Built -in answering machine with ALL the features one should have, including remote access.

Handset holds charge for a very good amount of time.

Easy to use menus. Easy to adjust volume on handset and base.

CONS:

Price.

Handset is a bit heavier than I'm used to.

2.4 GHz (if true) doesn't reach as far as you would think! I used to own a 900 MHz panasonic and the range of that phone was better.

Bottom line: Go for it.

My old cordless was a 900Mhz Analog, which worked fine, but my answering device puttered out, so I decided to go all new. I picked up this phone and am very satisfied with it. It sounds good, has good range, and comes with an impressive set of features. Plus, it's reasonably priced.

Duracell Batteries / 9Volt - size battery

Duracell Batteries / 9Volt - size batteryDuracell 9 volts are the only batteries I use in the wireless microphones we use for our instructional video business. We replace the batteries before every shoot and sometime run for up to 10 hours non-stop. Wireless microphones use a lot of power and we have found that the Duracell batteries can make it through an entire day of shooting, lasting about 25% longer than the less expensive generic types we tried before.

We also use Duracell 9 volts in our smoke detectors at home. They might be more expensive than some, but they are worth it in the long run.

Highly recommended!

We purchased this 9 volt battery for use in our fire alarm, but the low battery still kept going off. We then went to Kroger to buy another 9 volt and this one allowed our fire alarm to work properly. Cannot recommend any purchases from this vendor.

This was a simple purchase so nothing really to rate, except that shipment came on time and product met expectation. Thanks!

I originally ordered this battery for a radio back-up in case the power went out. However the radio played-out and stopped working shortly after I got this battery. I did get a new radio but the new model has a back-up that doesn't require a battery as the back-up is internal{built-in}. However, I will be using the battery on another radio{a weather radio} that has a battery back-up. I have found out that Duracell batteries last longer than other brands{not surprising since they cost more} and I only buy Duracell batteries now.

I bought this thinking that I was getting a 12 pack of 9volt batteries. When I opened the box there was only ONE battery in there!

This is deceiving. The product description even states pack of 12.

I hope the problem is corrected and get my other 11 in the mail soon.

I purchased this with the primary goal of time recording AM radio stations, specifically Coast To Coast AM with George Noory which airs locally from 1am to 5am. I thought this device would allow me to program in a 1am alarm time at which the device would come on and record the preset station. I'm still not sure if this is possible or not, but my inability to figure it out is making me want to return it. The problem is, the manual. This is not a simple radio to operate if you're looking to take it out of the box and instinctively know how to operate it. I'm usually good at that, but not with this radio. The functions of the many buttons and switches are NOT obvious. I dove into the manual, only to find the usual Chenglish that one finds in lower grade Chinese products. I can't understand why they pour so much effort into product development and scrimp on hiring a native English speaking person to write their manuals for English speaking markets. The manual claims, in its own way, that upon alarm, the radio will resume what it was doing when you last turned it off. So I set up the station I wanted to record, started recording it, set the alarm for 1am, and turned the radio off. Seemed simple enough. Oh, and you have to plug the earphone in because otherwise it would run the batteries down if the speaker was on because in order for you to have a useful volume for playback, the volume needs to be high during recording. The other odd thing is there's no way to program the alarm timer to turn the recording off. I checked the radio at 7am and it was still on, playing the station I wanted, but it didn't record anything. I'm still working on that but returning the unit is looking more attractive. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, the only tag for recordings is a folder and file number, nothing descriptive, so you have to remember what each recording is by its numeric label.

Some of the negative reviews stated the user couldn't even tune in stations. I think some of this may be due to the fact that you have to manually tell it you live in the US so that it tunes in AM channels in 10kHz increments, not the default Chinese 9kHz increments. Because of this, when I tried to tune to AM1180 the closest I could get was AM1178. Even though 1180 was a clear channel station, it was not clear as a bell, as it should have been due to the 2kHz offset. However, after I read the manual some more (ugh) and made the necessary correction, the reception was perfect, even inside my workplace where my old radio couldn't even pull in any AM stations. There's a simlar correction for FM stations which would block the lower end of the band if not adjusted properly.

So it is a handy, compact reliable receiver, but it has issues one should consider carefully before purchase.

This Degen is a nice compact (shirt pocket sized) little radio. I was in the market for a FM pocket sized radio with good quality and in my search I found this one, it was not much more price wise and had Short Wave (Which is also an interest of mine) MW (AM) a voice recorder and MP3 capabilities. Its the perfect size I was looking for its only slightly bigger the an I-POD classic, fits easily in a shirt pocket, it was some weight to it, so its not flimsily. Sound in the speaker is pretty good, its 50 mm and it produces a descent sound. It DX's in FM station really well, does good with middle wave (AM) (I live in a location with bad reception-one reason I got this radio is I have an Sirius XM radio and I transmit it around the house and property and I can listen to it on FM it works perfectly) and the short wave is to be expected in that it DX's in the big boomers, your probably not going to DX in far away lower powered stations, but its not bad. Its pretty easy to use and there's lots of per sets on all three bands. The MP3 recorder is easy to use, you just plug it into your computer and drag music into its folder. Battery life (rechargeable) is very good, You can get 10-15 hours, or more. It takes 7 hours to fully charge and more if you use the computer like 9-10 hours. Its not a bad radio at all.

Very good AM and FM performance for its size and price range. SW performance is adequate but subject to interference from strong/local AM radio stations. Very sensitive with just its short whip antenna. Digital recording and playback features are just basic. Does not support scheduled, unattended digital recording. Speaker audio ok for size, audio generally fine with headphones. Some distortion at low levels in AM band. Computer connection not well documented in manual; worked properly with Windows XP; compatibility with other computer OS's not known. No numeric keypad or rotary tuning knob. Seems solid and well made. Its compact size is a key feature. If size is less important, there are other better performing radios in this price class, although none with digital recording/playback features.

Typically, you'd expect a multifunction device to be a `jack of all trades, master of none', and this one is no exception-it is not outstanding as a receiver, MP3 player or digital recorder-but it is nice to have all these functions combined in one shirt-pocket sized device. The receiver functions about as well as my other portables on AM, FM and shortwave; as with most shortwave receivers clipping a roll-up wire or active antenna to the whip helps with weak signals. Tuning on shortwave is slightly cumbersome since you first have to select the band and then scan up or down in 5 khz steps, although you can store and jump to your favorite frequencies. I can't tell if the digital signal processing helps or hurts, it makes some funny noises when dealing with weak signals. Sound is surprisingly ok considering the speaker size; the included ear buds are junk but it sounds good when paired with a decent headset. Battery life is fair with the included rechargeables; you might want to invest in higher-capacity ones. The supplied wall charger puts out a lot of interference that wipes out my other radios, but you can also charge it off a computer USB port which avoids this problem. As an MP3 player it's pretty basic, 1GB capacity and stores songs as numbered files in numbered folders, you have to remember what's what. As a digital recorder you can record off the air (requires volume to be turned up to full!) or make direct voice recordings (presumably the speaker doubles as a microphone). Build quality appears to be pretty good although the slide switch band/function selector feels somewhat flimsy. This has become my new `travel radio' due to its small size and multifunctionality.

I was looking for a replacement for my wife's "Radio your way" radio recorder by Pogo products. They don't seem to be in business anymore, to bad. She liked to tape certain radio shows. From what she tells me this unit isn't quite as good. It's a bit bulkier and you can't program it to record at a certain time like the Pogo radio. You have to be there and push record at the time you want. She also says the buttons are real sensitive and when you fast forward you can't hear the commercials zip by so you have to guess where to stop it. Otherwise she likes it. It holds more music etc. and the rechargable batteries are nice. The poorly worded instructions don't help either. Reads like a bad Chinese to English translation. Have only been using it a week hopefully it will grow on her.

Sony ICFCD823 CD/AM/FM Stereo Clock Radio

Sony ICFCD823 CD/AM/FM Stereo Clock RadioThis clock radio saves a whole lot of space that includes a built-in CD player to your nightstand, or anywhere else you're limited for space. The AM/FM stereo tuner has great reception, and the multi-setting dial makes time and alarm setup a breeze. You also get an extendable snooze timer. The backlit LCD display makes it easy to see what time it is, and brightness control lets you dial in the perfect contrast making it easier to sleep. 5 station presets are great, or you can drop in your a CD for a listen. The best part of it is you can wake to CD! Dual alarm makes life simpler for couples i guess, and the memory backup is great for when there are power outage overnight.

I just got this Sony ICFCD823 CD clock radio and was somewhat impressed with it. Great styling, excellent Malaysia quality, easy to read LCD display, and wonderful sound are a plus. However, the FM reception is poor. It recieves stations but too many static noise. Another is that the volume is a turn dial instead of digital volume. Also, the feature says that it includes a brightness control. It appears that there is no brightness control and is not mention in the manual either. Maybe I got the 2nd generation of the Sony ICFCD823 cd clock radio.

90% of portable iPod speakers are garbage. I listened to many of them. I also listened to the Bose and similar "portable" speakers that run upwards of $200 and more. They sound good but are really not very portable. And >$150 for an iPod speaker doesn't make sense to me. Skip the cheaper ones unless you think the iPhone's internal speaker sounds great because that's the sound you get from the cheap ones a tinny distorted mid-high sound. I spend a lot of time and effort on my home systems. I have two full systems in my home. One is a full analog system with a turntable and tube amplifier. The other is a full solid-state system with digital transport and separate digital/analog converter. I take good sound seriously. However, I'm not one of those asshats that spends $20,000 on a stereo system. That being said. This speaker is outstanding at what it is designed to do. This little thing sounds great. It is worth the $100. I have played my iPhone 3GS through it with NO PROBLEMS. The people who hear it are all impressed with the sound. It has good bass, which is the toughest thing for something this size to do. I highly recommend it. JBL deserves credit for a good product at a good price.

I don't normally write reviews. I use them all the time but I don't like to take the time to write one. I am writing because I think this is a very good product. Perfect, almost. The sound quality is very good. We purchased it because we wanted something small that we could pack for vacations that had good sounds. This is relatively small with a great sound that fills a room with clear sounds. My only complaint about is it has a very nice small remote control. This is great and works good BUT it is very small and easy to loose. They could of used just a little engineering logic and put a small place in the base that it could be stored so it would be harder to get seperated from the base. Other then that, I highly recommend this if you are looking for a relatively small unit with great sound. I take it out by our pool and it really projects and we have a noisy road behind my house.

I've had previous versions of this product and find this one much improved.

It does work with my iPhone 3G, including the charging.

Improved sound quality.

Battery powered (optional)

The only downgrade with respect to past versions is the remote control:

Less intuitive buttons. Difficult to operate in the dark

Dependent on Infrared, instead of the old RF. This means you need direct line of sight to the unit for it to work.

I've owned older versions of the JBL On Stage line and this one has been the best experience yet. The sound produced from this model is great and gets loud enough without distortion to use in any environment. When you first dock an iPod or iPhone with it and begin playing, it starts out on a low volume setting so you have to turn it up each time you dock it but it keeps you from being blasted out like the older models did. I haven't bothered to use this one running on the 6 AA batteries since I've always been somewhere with AC power for it. I've only used this with the original iPhone. There are some changes Apple made to how the 3G iPhones charge that although they will play music through older devices, they'll display an error message when you first connect them. With the original iPhone this speaker worked perfectly, though.

I just purchased this speaker dock for my new iPhone 3GS, and I love it. It works perfectly. The sound is great; there's no need for a special adapter (like another user said there was); there is ZERO feedback/interference heard (which is huge for me and the reason I returned a different product by a different manufacturer); it's compact/portable; and it charges your phone for you while you listen to music! What more can you ask for??

Well, the one thing I would ask for is a lower price. In fact, having to pay $133.99 for this unit was the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. I'd actually rate the unit itself as a five star unit and the price a one star. It's just too expensive. But unfortunately, I couldn't find another (cheaper) product that has all the features that I wanted like this one does. And this one sure did live up to it's promises.

Ultimately, I'd buy it again.

******* UPDATE 9/14/11 *******

Well, two years later I can see that the price did come down. My original unit is still working great, so I just bought a second one. Now I have one for the house and one for work. I still think this is a great product. With the lower price, I'd give it 5 stars.

Sirius Streamer SIR-STRPNP1 Portable Satellite Radio Receiver

Sirius Streamer SIR-STRPNP1 Portable Satellite Radio ReceiverI opted for the Boombox and a couple of the Pro car kits (wireless FM) and I couldn't be happier. So far, the only time I've dropped signals is when going under overpasses (sometimes) and through tunnels. The boombox sounds great!

One word of caution, though. The backing plate for the windshield suction mount deformed from the heat from the sun. A few seconds in boiling water and its good as new!

I'll be ordering a home kit and a few extra antennas so that I can hook up the kit in our Airstream.

Get one you'll love it!

This is a radio and remote only. I realized that after i opened the box. its a nice radio, has a good quality feel to it. but, comes with no accessories. after reading the description again, i see that it says car kit sold seperately.

I bought this receiver as a gift for my boyfriend as a replacement for a radio that wasn't working anymore. This model has limited accessory availability.. we weren't able to find a car or home mount anywhere because the receiver is an older model. My suggestion: go for the Sirius Replay, it is newer..

Nice sound. Looks good. Stereo is a plus. But it's very difficult to use because of a single button interface. Call me old fashioned, but I hate it. I like to change the alarm times from day to day, and it's not easy. I replaced my Bose Wave dual alarm radio with this unit, when the Bose died. After I used this unit for a couple weeks, I got the Bose fixed! There are better sounding radios for the money out there.

  • Auto Loading CD Mechanism

I bought this radio because the one in my car completely died. I knew I didn't want to spend lot of money because my car is really old. I wanted something simple that would play CD's and radio. Unfortunately this CD player does not have an anti skip device and constantly scratches and skips and pauses while the car is in motion. I don't understand why any CD player that is going to be inside a moving vehicle would not be equipped to protect the sound quality or integrety of the CD. Im really dissapointed with my purchase. The radio is nothing but static and the sound quality os poor. Overall if you really want something flashy and thats going to give you great sound then I'd say spend the extra money and get something better. If you're just looking for some soound in your car and are not particular then this one is fine....for the time being.

Installation -Did it myself. Bought the wire connectors at Lowes. Matched up the wire colors from the radio to what was in my car and crimped each one. I used the existing casing instead of trying to put in the one that came with the radio.
