iLive ICR6307DTBLK iPod Docking System with Digital Tune AM/FM Stereo Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Re

iLive ICR6307DTBLK iPod Docking System with Digital Tune AM/FM Stereo Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Remote Control in Black
  • Black dual-alarm iPod clock radio with integrated AM/FM tuner
  • Built-in docking station plays and charges dockable iPods
  • Wakes to iPod or radio; gradual wake-up function for slow risers
  • Large LCD display with blue backlight; 4 preset EQ settings
  • Battery backup; measures 11 x 5.2 x 8 inches (W x H x D); 90-day warranty

I had been tracking iPod speakers for over 4 months now, and I saw that not one had all the features I wanted. And even if they did, the cons always made me wait for more.

I came across this one at FRYs and decided to give it a shot, since I could always return it in case it didnt match up to my expectations.

But I must say this piece is simply awesome. A fully functional remote (u can browse through the entire iPod menus from it), FM radio, dual alarms with gradually increasing beeper (u can wake to beeper, radio or iPod), Aux input, audio/video output to ur TV and above all crisp and satisfyingly loud sound. It also has bases for all the older iPods.

I can even operate the alarms and radio from the remote. Imagine switching off that pesky alarm using a remote!!

The only con (if it is) is that the remote isnt very responsive to the iPod all the time, and I need to press more than once occasionally to make it work. But then I can bear it given the remote is so small.

I purchased this because I wanted the ability to wake up each day to whatever music I wanted. Too many times I have been awoken by some annoying song on the radio that inevitably remained in my head all day. Plus, I really liked the idea of the sound gradually increasing in volume so there is no jolt of sound. I read the reviews and thought I was making the informed choice. Boy, was I wrong! Firstly, two different days the alarm didn't even go off at the assigned time (yes, it was set properly, I read directions!). Actually turning the alarm off is not at all easy and the directions don't actually inform you as to how. But really the biggest reason for returning is the light is so bright that I had to cover it with a post it note to darken the room Even when it was set on the dimmest setting it was brighter than a night light. Also, the unit seems so cheap. The buttons wobble, and they seem like they really aren't even metal. I returned this and purchased the iluv alarm clock, and couldn't be happier. You even have the ability to turn the light completely off!

I spent countless hours searching for the perfect iPod dock, and despite this product had no reviews at the time, I decided to risk it and purchase the product. I am very pleased with this product, being that it does everything I wanted from a dock and so much more. The sound quality is fantastic and all the features make this product the perfect choice (features such as a radio, dual alarm settings, the ability to wake to any song of your choice from your iPod, gradual wake, full functionality remote, sleek design, 10 radio preset slots, and something the description doesn't tell you if your alarm is set to play your iPod and you forget to dock the darn thing, that's ok, the dock will automatically beep for your alarm to make sure you get up in time). There are only two things that bug me: the ipod is unresponsive to the remote every once and a while, and the backlight on the clock is way too bright even on the lowest setting, however, this is the price to pay for such a great product.

I'm a very deep sleeper and was recently looking for a good alarm clock to ensure that I wake up every day in time for work or whatever I may be doing that day. I've gone with the smaller travel alarm clocks and it's kind of hit or miss for me. Sometimes they wake me up, but other times, I either sleep right through the monotonous buzzing or hit snooze several times until I'm late.I decided that the next alarm clock I'd get would be the last. I researched several and while some were loud enough, I knew that the buzzing or radio might not work because I won't wake up to a commercial either. The iLive is perfect for me because it doubles as an iPod dock. I can upload my favorite songs and that's what I've been waking up to. It's got a good volume range and a decent set of speakers, so not hearing it is no longer an issue. There are two alarms that you can set to iPod, radio, or generic alarm. I usually set the iPod for alarm one and then the generic for fifteen minutes later on two but haven't needed the second one yet. There is a well-lit blue display that's easy to read from anywhere in the room so you never have to strain to see what time it is. Setting the time and alarms is simple and intuitive, so anyone can use it. I love my iLive alarm and would recommend it to anyone who wants to wake up to their favorite music every morning.

The "gradual volume increase" on the alarm is nothing you can call gradual. The radio starts low and is such a high level before you can even have a chance to turn the volume down you must do this before you hit snooze or you will wake up your entire neighborhood. I have been unable to get any customer service on this unit. Pretty disappointed overall.

Coby CRA58BLK Digital AM/FM Alarm/Clock Radio, Black
  • large LED display
  • sensitive AM/FM tuner
  • alarm clock with sleep/snooze timers, wake to music or buzzer
  • battery backup with 9V battery

The title says it.

You won't be able to receive many stations you can get on most radios. The tuner dial is very inaccurate. Stations overrun each other. You can hardly see the time in daylight because it is so dim. You can't see the tuner dot unless bright light is shining at it.

Let's see... could this item be worse? No, and it will cost you way too much to return it. Take the money and just burn it instead of buying this clock radio.

I bought this product because it was way down in cost at 8.50 or something, and it had 2 separate alarms on it. I concede that it works, the radio is useless of course. The 2 alarms work, but I have to set my alarms for many different times and I have to go through clicking 4 different keys to set the alarm, it is a real pain. Unless you are going to want the alarm going off at the same time every day and don't care about the radio, this thing is a real pain to use, I found myself back using the one easy to click alarm with buttons for both hour and minute and resetting it twice, rather than fumble with this thing and all its buttons. I am still in the market for a second alarm clock. This thing is going into storage.

Want Sony Compact AM/FM Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Large LED Display, Independent Dual Alarm Times, Exte Discount?

compact & offers alot of features but the one thing that is a con is the alarm buzzer isn't very loud especially if you are a heavy sleeper.

~I had a problem with this at first because I couldn't figure out how to set the time on it. (Yes, yes, I know, I know who doesn't know how to set the time on an electric clock, you ask.) It took me a while, but I finally realized that, when setting the date and time, the current time is actually the 3rd "menu" to adjust not the 2nd one (which came right after setting the date, so I was confused.)

~It keeps perfect time, of course. I was amazed last week, when, after losing power for a little while, the correct time showed on the clock after power was restored, despite NOT having a replaceable back-up battery. Nice!

~The numbers are nice and big, which I need.

~I also like the option of being able to choose the brightness of the display low or high. I keep it on high most of the time, even at night.

~The controls for the alarms and radio, etc, feel solid, are clearly marked, and operate well.

~As to the radio it's okay. We don't get great over-the-air reception for anything where I live, so I don't count on a little radio like this for my entertainment.

~Actually, I've found that the most effective alarm in the world is to set a clock radio to a NON-station -somewhere BETWEEN stations that sounds like static or garbled stuff -something really annoying-sounding -and set the volume nice and loud. It sounds so terrible when it goes off in the morning that there's no way I want to listen to it!

~~Altogether, a good purchase. I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because there was one too many "time-setting" menus, which was confusing for me.

When working, this clock radio is passable and the performance is certainly in line with the price. Overall, when working, the value is good. However, the one I have stopped working, with the exception of charging my phone battery, within 24 hours of plugging it in. It sits there and mocks me with its silence and displays a static time 1:19 PM. The time never changes, it remains forever 1:19 PM. It is a very lonely, silent, well-charged world on Planet Pyle Clock Radio and it's always 1:19 PM.

This took some time to understand. I wanted a large snooze button, and the unit could not be over 3" hi to get t the snooze buton on my bedstand. I wanted the iphone charging which works great! What I didn't know I was getting was a large light at the top of the unit. It goes on 1 minute prior to the salarm going off, and comes back on with the snooze button. If the speaker unit is in the up position, it is a bother, not so much in the down position. Little did I know i can control the display with low, medium & high, a great feature!

Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording

Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording
  • AM/FM radio connects to PC or Mac for online radio reception
  • Records AM/FM broadcasts in real time or via pre-programmed schedule
  • Time shift recording "pauses" live radio so users don't miss a second of programming
  • Connects to computers via USB port; fin shape acts as antenna
  • Transfers recorded broadcasts to iPod or other digital music players

I already have a couple software programs that will automatically record and save radio programming but when the Radio Shark was announced, I couldn't resist. Mac elegance, simplicity and functionality. Or so I thought. The product is solid, well made and the software is easy to use. Unfortunately, the reception is unacceptably poor in my suburban, residential area. Every radio I own from clock radios, a couple Tivoli Pal's, a built in-whole house system, mini-systems and so on receive programming easily. The Radio Shark's reception is inferior to even the lowliest of portables. I've tried everything I can think of. Coiling the USB cable, moving it to every place within reach, using a high dollar shielded usb extension cable which also allowed me to move the Shark further from the computer), using the Radio Shark's headphone input with a pair of ear buds and a minijack to rca cable (as Griffin's website suggests). Nothing seems to help. I have two other radios within 18 inches of computers and they were pretty easy to set up and receive clear, static free programming. The Radio Shark has been a huge disappointment. I should have learned my lesson after purchasing the Power Mate from this company. The Power mate (ditto for the Radio Shark) is very high quality piece of hardware from a fit and finish standpoint but the software was glitchy with a pc. Maybe it would have been better with a mac. But I digress. Perhaps if you live far from all urban and suburban interference or live on a hill with better line of site to the towers you want to receive from, the Radio Shark might be fine. For the rest of us, the Radio Shark is likely to disappoint. If you want to time shift radio programming, I can recommend two excellent pieces of software. High Criteria's Total Recorder Pro (for the pc) and Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro for the Mac. I don't work for or profit from either comany. I use both on a daily basis. Both are rock solid. All you need to do is connect a radio to your pc or mac and you're set.

You have bought a Griffin Radio Shark, and you have hooked it to your Mac Computer (or your PC if you are somewhat more challenged). Now being an astute, card-carrying member of Gen X or Gen Y, you may have noticed that your Griffin Radio Shark is playing static noise, not tunes. This is bad. You are pi**** off. You are not alone. Read 90% of the customer reviews.

OK, punks, Turn off your iPods and remove the earbuds. Notice how the extreme silence causes thought, concentration, and the ability to interact with other humans to gradually intrude upon your being. Now gather around old Uncle Dave because he knows what is "wrong" with your Shark and he's got some tricks up his sleeve to get you connected. (Don't expect him to explain all your gothic ink and piercing, though).

First off, imagine an ancient, primitive time when there were no wireless connections, no hotspots, no Bluetooth, and no Real World. Life was ugly, brutish and short. People wore colors other than black and engaged in quaint interpersonal rituals (called **being polite and normal**). Attention-deficit-disorder had not been invented yet. The world was ruled by large, ugly, thundering beasts (called **radios**, now extinct). Hideous metal contraptions inhabited the rooftops of human dwellings. These Jurassic contraptions were called **antennas**. In the old days, people would buy a radio and hook a **wire** from the radio to the antenna. Humans instinctively knew that if you bought a radio, you also needed to buy and own an antenna. Separately. Sadly, this ancient wisdom has been lost. Modern day radios have cheap antennas, and few people seem to know about simple, time-honored solutions. For whatever reason, the good folks at Griffin did not inform you of this.

So.... To correct the bad reception, simply purchase a good antenna for your shark. Don't skimp here-it makes all the difference for ANY radio. For decent reception, including decent AM reception, get a portable loop antenna such as the Kiwa Pocket Loop, or pull off the loop antenna from your parents' `80s-`90s era tuner. Or go for the gold standard in cheap AM antennas-the Select-a-tenna and/or the Twin Coil Ferrite AM antenna. I use the Twin Coil Ferrite antenna, and I can make distant, weak signals sound crystal clear. The TCF requires a transistor radio battery ...errrr... I mean 9-volt battery.

You'll find that the Shark, with a proper antenna, sounds great.

There are other radios that seem to do the same things, i.e., the compact Radio Your Way LX AM/FM Radio Recorder. I don't know how the RYW LX compares to the Radio Shark, but definitely give it a look before buying Griffin's product. It is compatible with PC and Mac.

Make sure to install the most recent upgrade (currently 1.0.5)-it improves the tuning increments, among other things. Also make sure to set the EQ window (equalizer), as proper EQ settings make a huge difference. If you are listening to daytime talk radio or other drivel, set the EQ to "Voice." It will improve the sound considerably, but the fanatical talk-show host will remain incomprehensible. To further improve the sound (if you are over 30 years old), you may want to crank up your hearing aids.

The software is OK, but I imagine that there is room for improvement, as others have mentioned. The best feature of the Shark, compared to basic radios, is the time-shift feature. Sure, you can use it to use it to listen to and record broadcasts. I personally use time-shift to listen to sports broadcasts that are on TV and radio simultaneously. I'd rather listen to my local radio announcers than the national ones. But the radio broadcast is usually about 10 sec ahead of the TV, so the time shift feature allows me to synch the two broadcasts by adding a 10 sec delay to the radio broadcasts. To do this, make sure to set the preferences for time shift to allow for small rewind/forward skip increments. (I set the rewind/skip increment to 2 seconds for this purpose).

There doesn't seem to be a way to play online broadcasts through Radio Shark, and it isn't quite Tivo for radio.... That's too bad, because I'd love to use the time-shift feature with online broadcasts. There are other products that do this (Applian Technologies Replay Radio), but I'm wondering if RadioShark could be modified to do this.

Griffin Technology should have called this unit the RadioGuppy, not radioShark. There are quite a few flaws that prevent this product from being truly great. Yes, the software is easy to use, and yes it has lights that are either blue or red in the fin. I noticed a few things wrong, though.

I installed the Mac version of the software and was listening to a strong, very clear station. I noticed the "Check for Update" menu item, and found a newer version of the RadioShark software was available. I applied the update, and suddenly that booming station was not nearly as strong and loud. In fact, I had to turn the volume up to achieve the same effect.

Next, when I tried via software to shut the LED off, a very weird, very annoying screech started coming out of my external speakers. I turned the light on, the sound went away. Light off, screech. Light on, no screech.

On the whole, I would stick with the software right out of the box. My perception is it was better than what the update will deliver. There may be features missing if you don't apply the update, however. I didn't mess around with the original software for very long to notice, so you may just want to skip right to the update. It's your call. I am just far too lazy at this point to clean out the upgrade and revert back to the original software.

The documentation is not complete, as well. For instance, there is a black port on the back of the "fin"... What it is used for? The manual is silent. Spartan may be a better word, as it is light on the actual mechanics and heavy on the usage of the time-shifting software. This is good news for the less-than-geeky, but rather lacking for the more sophisticated technology user.

But there is a plus side they do include a USB extension cable right in the box in case you need to orient the "fin" away from your computer. That is a nice touch that is frequently overlooked in other products. Plus, you can send the sound file the RadioShark generates directly to iTunes to be sent to your iPod. Very, very cool and very slick. The iPod connectivity is a great touch.

BOTTOM LINE TIME : There are just a few minor flaws like incomplete documentation that prevent this product from being five stars. The RadioShark itself is worthy of five stars. The software is easy to use, easy to install, and overall the product works as advertised. It is up to you to judge if the original or upgraded software is the one to run with as the saying goes, your mileage may vary. It excels at time-shifting recording, and integrates with the iPod for listening whenever and whereever you want. It might not be money well spent the jury is still out on that but I don't think you'll be disappointed either.

Want Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording Discount?

I've had and used the RadioShark for about a month now (I make daily recordings).

Like many other users here, my RadioShark appears to suffer bad reception. I record mainly AM stations, and I'm recording a very powerful AM station in San Francisco -and I live in Oakland (10 miles away). Reception SHOULD be flawless (as it is on every other AM radio I own).

The problem I experience, however MAY not be a reception problem. To me, it sounds more like a recording level problem. It's as though the signal is overdriven, and distorts. I say this, because any "quiet" sections record relatively well. It's when loud commercials with lots of background music come on that the recording gets badly distorted.

I have not yet tried to discuss this issue with Griffin tech support -but intend to -to see what they say. (4/4/05 Update: I've explained my problems to tech support, and they're mailing me out a replacement unit -we'll see if this correects the problem...)

Otherwise it has all worked well. I did have a couple of schedule recording failures, but discovered that when I didn't plug the USB connection into a USB hub, but plugged it directly into a USB connection on the computer (this is a Win XP box), my failed recording problem went away.

I have no problem with my monitor sleeping -doesn't adversely affect anything.

The AM / FM reception of this device is HORRID. PERIOD.

I am a radio amateur for 30 years, intimately ramiliar with the workings of all types of radios, and this one is a horror.

Even after connecting 25 feet of line into the 3.5 jack provided on this "Shark" tail, the reception was marginal at best, and still noisy.

For the money, all it provides is an option to input AM FM broadcasts and record, time shift, or schedule record shows onto your computer.

However, the only way I am able to do it is to use an FM transmitter RIGHT NEXT TO THE SHARK, and then broadcast the AM FM shows from ANOTHER radio, through the shark and into my computer. BTW, this is a good way to record streaming audio, however you will need two computers to do it, or you will get a severe echo.

Lotsa work to get the desired result, IMHO.

Griffin should worry less about the catchy "Shark" and "Rocket" hip hop Mac designs, and get down to engineering a receiver that works.

My husband bought this system brand new for me in 2009, the unit was manufactured July 02, 2008. I just threw it away tonight because it suddenly went haywire. I have used this unit many times in the last 3 years and never had any problems with it. I have moved it around my house several times and it has always performed perfectly. I moved it to a different room in my house last week and now suddenly it has started to malfunction. The remote control has stopped working even after a battery change, the volume adjusts to the highest level of 32 as soon as I turn the unit on and will not come down with the remote or manually, it plays 15 seconds of a song then shuts itself off. I have reset it, unplugged it, moved it back to the room I moved it out of, taken it apart, checked the wiring, nothing is burnt, scorched, loose, out of place. It is a mystery to me and the only other thing I figure can be wrong is it is simply a malfunction of the control boards inside. Oh well, it was great while it lasted but I will not be buying another one. I'll spend the extra money on a better quality and well known product this time.

I'm listening to smooth jazz via Pandora on my Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 (SGP for the rest of this review) through the Philips Fidelio as I type this, and it's quite nice. I'll admit, I wasn't expecting much when I ordered this, but color me surprised!

This device is meant to be a bedside alarm clock/speaker dock for your Android device. So, I'm sure some people may wonder, but no, it does not run on batteries, so while it is small enough to be portable, you can't pack it and take it with you to the beach.

The Fidelio connects to your Android device via Bluetooth and there is a micro USB plug you can use to attach your device for charging only; it cannot be used for synching. Also, in regards to the USB docking connector, it can slide left and right and can also swivel and tilt, allowing for the dock to be used with virtually any Android handheld device (as long as it uses a micro USB plug). This flexibility does come at a price, though, as it makes the connection seem flimsy and weak, and I worry about repeatedly docking my SGP and removing it. Time will tell. I also think that it would've been nice if the dock also swiveled up to allow me to use my SGP in landscape mode to watch videos, but because the jack is on the bottom, it's portrait-only.

The unit itself is a disc about an inch and a half tall and six inches or so in diameter, with shiny black plastic around and a mesh on the entire top where the speakers are. On the front of the dock is a dot-matrix clock (which I find quite nice) and a blue indicator light to show when the speakers are on. In the center of the top is a flat, tall, clear tab sticking about an inch or two straight out the top and right in front of that, the adjustable micro USB dock connector. Both sit centered on the control panel that controls the power, volume, and night light (with two levels of brightness). The buttons are actual buttons and not touch-sensitive; there is a distinct click when you push them. The front center button is the power/snooze button and flanking that are the volume buttons.

Now, a major design flaw to me is the light button, which sits BEHIND where your Android device goes. So, if your phone/MP3 player docks in landscape mode, expect to have to fumble around to turn on the glowing orange night light that emit from the bottom of the dock. This is only made worse by the fact that your device is only attached by that small, flimsy micro USB connector; I'd be worried that in a late-night stupor, I might snap off the connector while trying to turn on/off the night light.

As far as pairing my SGP to the Fidelio went, it was a simple, painless process and I was listening to my music in less than a minute. I tend to keep the volume on my music low when I use headphones (15-20%), so at first, when I started playing my music, I thought something was wrong because I didn't hear anything. Only when I turned the volume up on both did I hear my music, and even at 30 on the dock and 50% on my SGP, it was still low, so I wouldn't expect this speaker to fill a loud or large room.

While on the subject of music, however, I'm no audiophile, but I'm finding the Fidelio pleasant for listening to jazz while I'm sipping some coffee and reading my book. The bass is subtle and the piano and sax clear. I've also listened to some pop and rock music and it's much better than any small/portable speaker I've tried. I'm very impressed by the audio from this little device.

The box and instructions directed me to the Android Market to download the Fidelio app and Songbird to use the speaker, but when I read the poor reviews (app crashes, glitches, system resource hog, etc.), I decided to see if I could get it to work without using Philip's app. Verdict: It works wonderfully on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread! I streamed music off Pandora and AAC files directly from my music app. I also watched a video I converted and it all sounded great! Nice and clear. So if you're worried about downloading yet another third-party app, fear not; it's not necessary.

In summary, the Fidelio is a fantastic near-universal Android dock with great sound quality. With the exception of the location of the light button and some sturdiness issues in regards to the dock connector, it's intelligently designed to handle most handheld Android devices, is very easy to use (so easy the instructions are only pictures, no words), and offers fantastic audio quality in a small package. An easy four stars!

The dock is very well built. The speaker can get louder than I expected and without any distortion of any kind. The Fidelio app is okay...it isn't the best. The only thing that I found useful of the app is that it turns on the bluetooth when it gets docked. The app is also used to sync the time between the phone and dock, but you can also set the time up manually.

However, I did find a minor issue when the phone is connected. When I'm not playing any music and get a call, text, or any type of notification the ringtone does not play on the speaker. Not sure if this is a bug with the bluetooth stack in the OS or the dock. I have tried to uninstall the Fidelio app and just pair it using the bluetooth menus. The only time it would play the notification is when music is playing. I think the dock/speakers turn off when no sound is playing though the bluetooth and there is a delay that prevents those short notifications to play. I wish it would play those notifications thought the dock speakers...but just a minor inconvenience.

Don't know what I would use the nightlight function for, but its a soft glow and there are two brightness settings. The clock display has three brightness settings.

I have an EVO 4G running CM7.1, which is Android 2.3.7

In a world where there are a large variety of iPhone and iPod speaker docks and clock radios, I was happy to see that Philips is producing good sounding speaker docks for the Android platform. With the debut of the Philips AS111/37 Fidelio Docking Speaker for Android, Philips has made an affordable Android docking speaker/clock radio that both looks and sounds good.

The Philips Android speaker dock is small and cylinder shaped, looking somewhat futuristic. It's all black, with just a snooze, volume and clock/nightlight buttons on the top. The unit itself is plastic, with fabric on top, covering the speakers. The top also has the dock for an Android phone, and the dock itself moves back and forth to fit any phone. The speaker dock also has an amber night light. Although the speaker dock is small, it produces very good sound and a balanced tone. I streamed music from both Pandora and Slacker, as well as music on my phone, I am very pleased with the sound this speaker dock produces. Highs are clear, and there's a good amount of bass present as well. The unit gets louds, and at its loudest setting, 32, it does not distort. Music plays wirelessly; the phone docks to the unit for charging purposes only. The Bluetooth connection is very effortless; the speaker dock found and connected with my phone almost immediately.

So that's the good news. Now here is the bad news. Because the speaker dock has so few buttons or controls, you need an app to control the alarm clock function. Philips wants you to download its Fidelio app, but the app is pretty large, (it may be a resource hog on your phone) and buggy.

The instructions, which are very bare (just a series of drawings, no real written instructions) don't really tell you much, so you have to sort of feel your way around the app to figure things out. It took me a while to find the actual alarm function on the app, which is not good if you are half asleep trying to adjust the alarm. I would suggest downloading any of the free Alarm apps available in the Android market. They are much less of a resource hog, have more features, and will not be as buggy. Waking up to music on my phone, such as Slacker, Pandora, or Sirius, is not possible, since my phone is password protected. The alarm does turn the phone on, but you have to enter a password to hear music. The alarm app will wake you to music that you have installed on the phone, or to a series of sounds (rain, waves, etc.).

I have an HTC Incredible phone, which means my phone has to sit horizontal on the connector since my charging input is on the side of the phone. The phone is somewhat hard to connect to the dock, and then once connected falls off easily since it is sitting on its side. Again, if you are trying to use this in the dark, it may be very hard (and frustrating) to connect the phone to the speaker dock.

Overall, I applaud Philips for putting out a great sounding speaker dock for an Android device. I use the Bluetooth to connect to the speaker, and enjoy listening to music. But I have to give this unit only three stars because of the weak Fidelio app and poor support for phones that have to sit horizontally on the connector. As a speaker dock, purely on sound, I would rate this unit a four, but the app (and a limited alarm function) brings to score down to a three.

I love this dock! It think it's very much worth the $90 The sound has an amazing quality (you cannot compare to cheaper brands I had a cheap ihome for my ipod and fidelio is a lot better by far!) and I love that I can use it as an alarm clock that wakes me up softly.

It's very easy to use, and I think it's pretty smart how they came up with a solution that fits all android phones. Bluetooth turns on/off automatically and the phone charges through the mini usb port (i.e., I also like that I can also use the speakers to play back my music while the phone is not docked!)

I really don't care for the songbird app, I just use pandora or any internet radio station and it works perfectly...

It seems to be very high-quality and the sound is surprisingly good for a small as it is.The Fidelio app. has a lot to be desired. Hopefully they will improve this over time overtime. It is not necessary to use the app for the alarm clock music player etc.but it is necessary for the Bluetooth connection. the soft glow nightlight is a really cool and It is nice to be able to listen to Pandora at my bedside. So far I love this thing.I just wish the Fidelio app.was nicer.

Philips DC190 iPod Docking Clock Radio

Philips DC190 iPod Docking Clock Radio
  • Play and charge your iPod
  • FM digital tuner with 20 station presets
  • MP3 link lets you play music from any portable device
  • Gentle wake up with increasing alarm volume
  • Stylish compact design

I bought this item because of it style and listed functions. It does look good, but the device is a little difficult to get used to. Just about all the control buttons are flush mounted because of this style, and as a result are sometimes hard to locate, especially when you are in a morning funk when the alarm is going off. The all-important "snooze" button is a classic case of this. It is also recessed, and you can easily miss it, smudging the beatiful smooth surfaces in your attempts to snooze it. All in all, it's OK, it is just that I bought it as a daily use alarm clock, and it is taking me a while to come to grips w/ it.

I've had my new Philips clock for about 2 months now. It's a lot smaller than my Sony Dream Machine, which I loved for it's speakers/audio as well as the easy-to-use features like snooze, nap and switching from standard to daylight savings time. But enough about that old clock...

I purchased this clock for several reasons, but primarily for my iPod (there is a non-iPod version of this clock). For an alarm clock, I'm happy with the audio quality. It's small, it looks sleek and it's relatively easy to set up in terms of selecting the iPod for the alarm. Additionally it includes 2 alarm settings that you can associate with 1 day of the week, every day or Mon-Fri.

As an alarm clock, it's not so wonderful for two reasons. The buttons, including power, snooze and volume, feel cheap and are not easy to push/press (in order to push a button, I have to apply equal pressure on the other side of the unit). And as far as I can tell, the snooze only works for up to 30 minutes and then it automatically shuts itself off.

I'll keep this clock for awhile since it wasn't cheap and I didn't keep the packaging to return it. Or I'll bring it into work as an iPod player. Then I'll seriously consider buying a Sony for my next alarm clock.

The Philips DC190 is a decent alarm clock and docking station. Setting up the alarm clock was simple, although I did have to consult the "Quick start guide" to learn how to set the time and the alarms. I used an old ipod photo for testing and it fit perfectly into the cradle.

With the DC190 you can set separate alarms for both the weekday and the weekend. I like to sleep later on the weekend, so it's nice not to have to remember to change the alarm on the weekends. On the other hand, the DC190 does not give the user a lot of flexibility outside of the weekday/weekend options. People who have to wake up at different times on different days, may not find this alarm clock useful. While it's easy to learn the stops involved in setting up the alarm, it would be a pain to have to change the alarm time every day. With my cheap Walgreens alarm clock, I'm able to change the alarm in a snap whereas the DC190 requires fiddling with several buttons in order to change the alarm.

The quality of the speaker is about what a person would expect at this price point. It's neither exceptionally good or exceptionally bad. The alarm increases in volume over the course of about 30 seconds before reaching its maximum volume. You can also set the volume to be either loud or soft. I found it comforting to be woken up by music as opposed to a loud beeping sound.

I recommend this system to anyone who wakes up at about the same time each day. It's easy to use and it does what it claims to do.

I've had this docking station next to my bed for several months, and I've come to the conclusion it is junk and not worth its price. However, I still use it because it's nice having a charger and a clock even if it isn't particularly good at either function.

I hooked the device up to my Kill-A-Watt for a day of just being a clock. During that time, whatever energy it used, was beneath the ability of the Kill-A-Watt to measure. Playing the radio or a docked iPhone draws around 2 W.

As a Charging Station

I have a variety of iPhones and iPods. It is very convenient having a charger here on my bedside table, more so than having a USB charging cable which would spend half its time falling behind the table. This device, unfortunately, is less than ideal at charging an iPhone as it takes both hands to nestle an iPhone into the dock; the act of docking causes audio to play, and a warning from the iPhone about going into airplane mode to avoid cell radio interference, making docking a complicated series of shoves, touches and button pushes. Still, it's nice to have a charger, and an iPod Touch, which has no cell radio and is thinner, can be docked one handed.

As an External Speaker

These are not great speakers. They are downright cheap as could be expected in an low end alarm clock. Still, they are better than the little speaker in an iPhone and way better than the casual listening speaker in an iPod Touch. If you want to fill a bedroom with sound, these do the job. I've seen my son watch a movie on a charging iPhone while laying down, head flat on a pillow using this device for sound and it does a credible job.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, there is often an interference style noise when using the iPod/iPhone input method. I had originally thought this was due to audio frequency interference from the iPhone's cell radio, but it happens with my iPod touch. This makes the speakers worth little for playing docked iPods.

As a Clock

Nice clock for a bedroom, good choice of color, doesn't distract when you want to sleep. The numerals could be bigger for those of us with severe myopia.

As an Alarm

My major beef with the device as an alarm clock is that it has controls spread over literally 4 surfaces and it is complicated setting the device to do anything. However, I am not a big user of alarm clocks, having done without them for 20 years, and it wasn't that hard to do following the manual.

As a Radio

The radio reception seems about what you'd expect from a low end device. I can tune to a local station and it sounds OK (for FM). I wouldn't waste time listening to music, but it's good enough to wake up to.

Conclusion

I think it's too annoying using this with an iPhone, and iPod Touch sound quality is low, but the charging dock does work, so I'd avoid it in preference of better designed products made of better materials.

Philip's DC190 iPod Docking Clock Radio is a stylish iPod compatible clock radio with sleek space-age stylings resembling a device right out of the Jetson's. As far as core functionality goes I have no complaints. The clock uses a yellow/amber display set against a mirrored finish background. The clock display has 4 levels of brightness allowing you ample room to customize your brightness as you see fit. Most iPod's are supported (excluding the iPhone) and I had no trouble plugging my 3rd Nano into this clock and getting it to play through the clock's speakers while keeping it charged simultaneously. This device also includes an audio-out cable allowing you to plug in non-iPod mp3 playback devices, but the only downside to using non-Apple devices is that you can't use them as an 'alarm' option the way you can via an iPod. The clock also has a digital FM tuner, with a built in wire-antennae and allows up to 20 station presets so along with the standard alarm clock chime this device provides plenty of audio wake-up alarm options.

As mentioned earlier, this is a very stylish product. Its a bit lighter and smaller then I initially expected but this is not necessarily a bad thing. The device looks right at home whether set up on your desk or your nightstand and looks equally handsome with or without your iPod plugged into it.

There are 2 minor complaints that I have with this product preventing it from earning a higher review score. First the device has a bit of a learning curve to it. Setting the time as well as an alarm will require you to consult the instructions at least the first several times. This clock has 4 arrays of functional buttons (the top, the sides and the back) and the layout of these buttons are not very intuitive and will require a good deal of guesswork if you're the type that can't be bothered to consult instructional documentation (me!) when setting up your morning wake-up. But once you get over this learning curve you'll discover that this little clock packs a great deal of functionality over other alarm clocks you get 2 alarm settings for weekdays/weekends, there's a plethora of audio alarm options and the default audio alarm tone is actually pleasant and I really appreciated the option for a gradual audio volume option (the alarm starts off soft and works its way up to loud).

My other complaint was a mild disappointment with the overall audio quality of this device. Granted, audio still sounds better then 95% of most 'budget' alarm clocks but the lack of bass and an overall sense of rich audio was disappointing and not befitting of a product that otherwise looks so fantastic with a decent feature set to boot. Still, this is one of the better sub $50 iPod compatible clocks out there and I highly recommend if you can overcome a tiny learning curve and live with the slightly 'tinny' audio quality.
