Etón FR500 Solarlink (Black)

Etón FR500 Solarlink
  • Includes owner's manual, warranty card, card for cell phone tip, and USB/cell phone charging cord
  • 520-1700 KHz AM, 88-108 MHz FM, 6000-12100 KHz Shortwave
  • Can be powered from the built-in rechargeable Ni-MH battery, from an AC adapter, from 3 AA batteries, from the AC adapter alone, and from solar power
  • Dimensions - Width 7-3/4 x Height 8-1/2 x Depth 2-1/2 (196.9x215.9x63.5mm)
  • Weight - 1.9 pounds (0.86 kg)

We are pretty happy with our Solarlink and use it during power outages (our recent outage was 4 days in length), in the yard, and camping. I will break down the review by parts and attributes.

LED light: Quite bright

siren: Obnoxious, questionably useful

flashing LED: A single flashing red LED. Perhaps useful as a signal.

handcrank: Easy to use, has a green LED to indicate adequate cranking speed. Can crank in any direction.

reception: FM, AM, and NOAA station very good. SW is weak.

sound: Clear

weight: ~2 lbs., very light

LCD screen: Large easy to read numbers with backlighting option

clock: Easy to read and set (can read from across the room)

alarm: Clock radio, easy to set, has snooze button

power options: Very versatile. Solar, crank, 3 AA batteries, and AC. Does not come with DC power adapter, but can use a mini-USB charger (like the one on my cell phone) or a standard 5V DC connection. Many car cell phone chargers are also mini-USB

other connectors: Regular USB out for powering cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players. Two mini-HPJ's; one for earphones, one for audio-in (ie MP3 players).

Knobs: Inset knobs keep your settings steady when transporting.

owner manual: The Solarlink is fairly self explanatory which is good because the owners manual was not very useful. I would like a much more technical owners manual.

In short, we were looking for a radio that has many power options, NOAA stations, and is very portable. The Solarlink meets these requirements well. Probably not the radio of choice if you want SAME capability, good SW reception, or excellent stereo sound. Overall though we are very happy.

I bought this originally from urban outfitters. The signal reception for this radio is fairly sensitive outdoors but once indoors (I have a computer, halogen lights, and T.V.) I tested this radio and it seemed that weak stations like KPCC (the NPR station) don't get through. I live in S. California and one of the NOAA channels works. Indoors is probably this radio's only weakness (and the plastic crank, I got big hands). I tried to boost the signal while indoors by connecting an antenna with a signal booster (by binding the signal boosted antenna to the telescopic antenna of the FR500) and the clearer channels came through pretty well but the weak channels in FM were still silent (this is indoors still).

With the little gripe out of the way I just want to say that I loved this radio's slotted case (it comes apart in two halves). The manual told me not to open the machine but I couldn't help myself. I was curious as to whether this radio was moisture resistant. I found that most of the buttons I could see were slotted in a way that would probably resist a dip. I also saw a rubber covering that sealed the antenna fairly well. But this radio isn't meant to be submerged. It were to fall into a puddle chances are it would remain unscathed (except maybe the digital readout; that could be a problem, depending on how it fell). The speaker has to be open in order to have adequate sound so the water might affect it adversely (but people can always stick this radio in a ziplock bag/s; the solar panel works even when I put put it in a ziplock). But this little weak point could be reinforced with a little bit of caulk or water sealant(ones that don't corrode the plastic casing).

Please note that when opening this case (the manual warns you not to do so) be careful as to not let the top three buttons fall into the circuit boards below. It took me a while to shake out one of the buttons and I ended up pulling out a soldered wire but it was easy enough to solder back on. Also you need to get a 5v ac adapter (FR500 doesn't come with one) if you want to charge the battery at home or listen to it indoors.

I've spent the whole day and late into the night testing the Eton FR500 Solarlink and I am impressed. No, it is not comparable to my Grundig Sattelit 800 Millennium that now is considered a classic and weighs 14lbs without batteries.

Grundig/Eton has united their minds to produce (or reinvent) a really decent quality emergency radio the FR500 Solarlink. Housed in a sturdy, mar-resistant and water resistant case, this radio is well protected and easy to operate. Getting a weather report is as simple as turning the radio on and moving a knob a few clicks to find the closest emergency weather broadcast. It can also be setup to automatically turn on and play emergency weather broadcasts.

AM and FM reception, and local weather broadcast bands, are strong and clear as I would hope for. However, the shortwave setting does not meet my standards. but reception can be improved by stringing a long insulated wire from the telescoping antenna to an insulated and properly positioned object like a tree or a strong shrub. A signal boosting antenna will improves all FM and shortwave radio reception. Anyway, this is an emergency radio and owners will be primarily interested in local weather alerts, local AM, FM, and all local emergency broadcasts. For these purposes, the Solarlink is more than adequate without adding improvements for the antenna system.

Also of importance is that the radio can be powered four different ways. The solar panel (built into the handle) will power the radio from sunshine only, and will even charge the Ni MH battery while playing the radio. The crank-able electric generator (dynamo) also charges the Ni MH batteries. However, unless the radio is plugged in via a 5-volt transformer, the radio should should have 3 AA Alkaline batteries installed. This is a good idea because rechargeable batteries go flat when not regularly recharged. Without the alkaline batteries, or sunshine during an emergency, you might be reduced to using the dynamo crank. The dynamo works, but is kind of tedious to use. However, a 5-Volt AC adapter (not included) will power the radio while it charges the NiMH battery so you will not need alkaline batteries. I know this works because I happened to have a 5-Volt transformer in my junk drawer. For the price of this radio, I do not actually understand why an AC adapter is not supplied. One can just leave it plugged-in and you would have all power requirements needed to immediately use when an emergency occurs even without sunshine or alkaline batteries.

The digital clock appears to keep reasonably good time. I set it with my Atomic Clock, and 24 hours later it was correct within a few seconds.

It is also a full featured alarm clock with a five minute snooze. And it includes a time adjustable shutoff timer so that the radio can lull you to sleep and then turn itself off.

To set the clock, you hold down the time button on the face of the radio while you press hour and minute buttons just below the solar panel that doubles as a handle. A third button, under the handle, is for lighting up the display handy when trying to check the time in the dark.

I don't use a cell phone, but the Solarlink is able to charge them with only power from the sun. To accomplish this, it is necessary to write, telephone, or contact Eton on the Web, and ask for the type of connection that is appropriate for your cell phone. Instruction on how to do this is enclosed with the unit. The appropriate adapter will be sent without charge. I use a PDA and an MP3 player. The FR500 is supposed to be able to charge these too. I haven't tested these features because I have other means of protection and use.

The LED flashlight works and is sufficient to find your way in the dark.

The siren is awful sounding and very loud. It should attract attention if you need to be rescued.

The emergency blinking red light (LED's) certainly could be useful, especially if your car is stalled or you are walking on a road or highway at night. Even if the batteries have only a fractiion of power, the FR500 LCD's will blink for many hours.

One could plug in an MP3 player to the FR500, but the radio plays in mono only even when using stereo headphones. Yet, the speaker on the radio is pretty good and will allow a group to share both the emergency information and all the other features.

The rubber seals are supposed to make the radio resistant to water. I think I would walk in the rain with it, but I would try to keep it covered as much as possible. It should never be submerged. If you are worried about a little rain, you could enclose the whole radio into a zip lock bag.

I've had other emergency type radios, but they didn't come near matching the quality and functions of the FR500 Solarlink. Although it has shortcomings, I would confidently recommend this radio even to my best friends. In fact, I think it would make a great gift to anybody you really care about.

Just one more thing: This radio is also available with the American Red Cross logo. . . as if they manufactured it. Anyway, it is the same radio, selling at the same price. And since the American Red Cross endorses this radio, it suggests that they agree with my evaluation. I'm buying and making gifts of this radio to as many poverty stricken fiends as I can afford. Everyone in the world should own an FR500 Solarlink radio. "The times, they r a change-in."

I bought the Etón FR500 Solarlink in black from Amazon, think that it deserves demerits instead of _any_ stars, and I am writing this review minutes before returning the radio.

The instruction booklet that comes with the radio tells you to plug the rechargeable battery pack's connector into the radio, and it tells you that you must either turn the crank or expose the solar panel to sunlight to charge the battery, although any bright light will also charge the battery.

The radio's controls suffer from bad ergonomic design. For example, the band selector ring and tuning knob are mounted concentrically, but turning the knob with large fingers can easily move the selector ring because it doesn't have firm detents to make the ring stay put on the band you chose.

The booklet doesn't tell you _how_ to use radio although it tells you how to turn on the LED flashlight, the red flashing LED, the anemic siren, and the weather radio alarm. It also tells you how to set the LCD clock, the alarm, sleep, and snooze functions as well as how to turn on the LCD display's light.

To use the Etón FR500 Solarlink as a radio, you must do _two_ things: You must press the power button, _and_ you must turn the power selector knob to DYNAMO to draw power from the rechargeable battery.

As a multiband radio receiver, the Etón FR500 Solarlink is a low quality device with a low gain radio frequency amplifier and excessively wide tuning filters in the FM band. At the low end of the FM band, low power stations may all be heard simultaneously.

Across the Hudson River from New York City, with a line of sight to the Empire State Building, where most radio stations in NYC have their antennas, I was able to tune in only a few of the strongest FM stations in the middle of the band!

On the AM band, I was able to tune in only strong stations anywhere on the band. On the shortwave band, I was not able to tune in any stations. Of the seven weather band channels, only the last one was active and came in loud and clear. As the instruction booklet recommends, I used the tiny, useless, whip antenna for the FM, shortwave, and weather bands.

If you tune in a station on the low end of AM band, the radio won't retain that station's tuned frequency when you switch to another band and tune in a station at the high end of that band.

On the shortwave band, the one foot long antenna is too short to be effective, and it's very difficult to move slowly and smoothly either up or down the shortwave band because too many frequencies are covered by the tuning knob and because the tuning knob springs in the opposite direction you were turning it after you release it. You may be able to live with that lack of resolution in the AM and FM bands but not in the shortwave band.

Also, while the frequency display is digital, the tuning knob turns the controls for an analog tuning circuit. The consequence of that is poor stability and a display that shows frequency drift on the AM, FM, and shortwave bands.

A selling point of Etón radios is that they have a crank that turns a dynamo, but their advertising doesn't tell you that their dynamo doesn't have a flywheel to keep the current running after you stop turning the crank. Clearly, a crank driven dynamo with a flywheel is the only way to build this kind of radio, but to be good a flywheel would have to be heavy. Of course, a heavy flywheel would require a much sturdier case than the Etón has.

Instead, the Etón dynamo uses rechargeable batteries to store charge. Of course, rechargeable batteries may be recharged only a finite number of times before you must replace them, and they might be dead during an emergency.

As a device for emergency use, the Etón FR500 Solarlink relies completely, and to your detriment, on three, small, rechargeable batteries, and the instruction booklet helpfully informs you that you may order new batteries from Etón.

The crank is flimsy, light, plastic and looks and feels as if it may break long before you have any emergency that calls for an emergency radio that is able to run off the power grid.

Don't buy an Etón FR500 Solarlink!

this radio does everything it is supposed to do. After only 90 seconds of cranking, the radio played as advertised. it is compact and seems hardy enough to use in emergencies. it would be great to have made this waterproof too. And, i entered the warranty info online and sent in the model of my phone and within about 2 weeks, the correct charging tip came to fit onto the supplied USB cord to charge my Motorola phone.

  • FM clock radio with digital turning and volume control

  • Charge your iPod while it is docked

I decided to write a review after seeing the negative ones for this dock. I have had it for almost three years and really like it. The sound is actually quite good and I am a musician and vocalist and would not like it if the sound was bad. I have taken it on trips to use in the hotel room and it is small and packs well. The only thing I don't like about it is that when you turn it off, you have to turn your iPod off also or it continues to play without the sound. My other docks automatically turn off the iPod when you turn off the power.

It looks good, but it sounds terrible! I love that it can change colors to match your iPod, but a pretty package doesn't do much good if the sound quality stinks. The music comes out all distorted and crackly! Rather like a cheap radio trying to tune into a station too far away. We tried my iPod Nano and my husband's iPhone, both sounded terrible.

Unfortunately within the first week of owning this dock it stopped working. I am not sure what happened, but now we just get a dull buzz when we plug it in and try to play music. I am testing out the manufacturer's warranty now, and hopefully that will get it fixed because I loved it while it worked.

RCA RC5610 CD Clock Radio with Stereo Speakers (Black)

RCA RC5610 CD Clock Radio with Stereo Speakers
  • Wake to alarm, AM/FM radio or CD
  • SmartSnooze lets you hit any button to snooze
  • No Worry battery backup for on time wake up everytime
  • Stereo sound
  • AM/FM digital clock radio

I bought this for my kids' bedroom to replace a boombox and add an alarm clock at the same time. We have played a thunderstorm/white noise CD when they are in bed for quite a while now to help them sleep, so when the boombox stopped working I wanted to buy a single product to be an alarm clock and CD player. This product was nice and cheap, so I thought it would work. It seems to work okay, but lacks one feature that I wanted and just assumed that it would have repeat all. When we play the CD for the kids to sleep we have it repeat over and over through the night (it helps them stay asleep, not just get to sleep). This CD player will not do that, however. It will play the CD all the way through and then just stop. Every other device I've owned with a CD player had the option to keep playing it over and over so I just assumed this one would, too. Several of the other reviews mention using this product with sleep-aid CDs, so I was encouraged to buy it. The others who use it for said purpose must only fall asleep to it and let it turn off, I suppose.

So not a bad product (although it's really light and feels kind of cheap), just not good enough for me.

This clock is great. Sound is good, and it does not "glow" in the dark like my previous clock. I like the fact that it has batteries, too, since our power goes off quite often. I highly recommend this CD Clock Radio.

I'm happy with this little radio, fits on the bedtable, CDs sound OK for the bedroom, clock works fine. Not much power to pick up less strong stations, but OK for the price.

Bought to use as CD player in baby's room. Have not used alarm feature.

CD player works well, clock brightness is just right. Music can sound tinny when volume is up high, but we use it to play lullabies.

Lid for CD player feels a little cheap (thin plastic), but I wasn't going for high-end here.

Exactly what I expected and needed. Would buy again.

Only wish this would be capable of more volume for CD player. We only use this to play CD to fall asleep to...wouldnt recommend for general CD playing.

iHome iP97 Dual Alarm Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone (Silver)

iHome iP97 Dual Alarm Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone
  • Awake to iPhone/iPod, Playlist,Radio or Buzzer
  • Plays and charges iPhone and Docking iPod Models
  • EQ and Balance Controls
  • Reson8 Ported Cabinet Stereo Speakers/Listen-in to Listen to Other Audio Devices
  • Remote Controls Unit and iPhone / iPod Functions and Menus

This clock radio is a very impressive little music machine! It sounds great for it's size, and lets you remote control your iPod or iPhone from bed or across the room. It has a few other unique features that come in very handy:

1) This particular model is "GSM shielded", which means that it actually works properly with an iPhone. If you try to use an iPhone on an older (or cheap) iPod clock radio, you'll end up hearing a bunch of static and buzzing noises if you try to play songs on the iPhone or listen to the radio when the phone is plugged in. You can get around this by putting the phone in airplane mode, but then you're going to miss calls and e-mails while you're listening to phone on your clock radio. Not cool.

2) FM Radio reception on this model is quite good, and it sounds great! AM reception isn't so hot, but I doubt that many folks who buy a high-tech clock radio like this really listen to much AM radio anymore.

3) This model has dual alarms, which didn't seem like a big deal to me at the time when I bought it. Then I realized that this thing also has a calendar built into it, and that I can program one alarm to go off during the week and a separate alarm to go off only on weekends. Sweet! No more having to shut off the daily alarm on Friday morning and having to remember to turn it back on Sunday night!

Some other thoughts... I have both an iPhone 3G and an old iPod Photo, and they both work fine in this clock radio. Even the menu navigation on the old iPod works fine from the remote. That said, you'll need to ditch the annoying little dock inserts that come with the clock radio to make the older "fat" iPod's fit. You'll also need to lose the insert if you have a case on your iPhone.. it won't fit otherwise.

Other than that annoying little flaw, it's a great product.

My wife gave this to me for Christmas and both of us are impressed. I do want to mention that since it was a Christmas present I have only used it briefly. First impressions are important, and the packaging shows thought and care. Everything was carefully taped into place with sufficient shock absorbing material. The instructions are thorough enough to get you going. It even came with the backup batteries already installed

Once plugged in, I set the clock to my time zone and due to the backup batteries the time was actually correct. I then inserted my 2nd gen Nano and it played just fine so I'm not sure what problem the previous poster was experiencing. By adjusting the sound to 3D and maximum bass it sounds pretty good for a desktop device. Sure, it lacks the bass I expect from a home stereo, but it's definitely the best sounding alarm clock I've ever heard. For most people it would also sound fine as a kitchen or office sound system.

In my opinion this seems to be an above average piece of consumer electronics in build and thoughtfulness. This product would be particularly useful for those who keep their iPhone nearby at all times. One of the features I was most impressed with is the number of dimmer settings; from bright to off there are eight different levels so you can select the one that's just right. As a first impression I can recommend this product.

Received this yesterday. I hooked it up yesterday evening and was pretty pleased with all the features. I thought the alarms were a little annoying to set, but no big deal. I set my time zone and waited for it to pick up the proper time, but it never did. I set the time manually using the time on my iphone. This was about 6:30pm. By the time we went to bed at 10pm, the time was already off by 3 minutes. I adjusted it again and went to bed. By the time I got up this morning, time was off by 4 minutes. I like most of the features, and especially the remote, but if a clock can't keep time.... Returning this today.

First of all. I'm a music lover and musician as a hobby, so I know a little bit about music. I got this product as birthday gift for myself and payed a very god price because it was the last unit on sale at some store (about 40% off the list price). I was dissapointed because it does not includes the adapted for the Nano 5g, but that is not a big deal. When I turned on the unit the sound was not impressive, but then I discovered that is has audio settings as bass, treble and 3D sound (which is incredible). You have to bear in mind that the sound quality depends a lot in the sound quality of the music in your iPod, so I choosed a nice quality song to test it and it really sounds good, it's not a home theater so don't expect a huge bass from it. Also, the sound quality remains pretty consistent at high volume, distortion is not a big issue here. at the end of the day this will be my summary....

PROS:

sound quality good overall

minimum distortion at high volume

Nice remote control let's you navigate easily through the iPod's menu

8 different setting dimmer

Basic EQ settings

3D sound really works

huge display

CONS:

Does not work on Batteries (not portable)

significant footprint (about 6.5 x 11... not exact)

buttons seem to be a little bit filmsy, but not an issue

Bottomline:

The iHome iP97 is a good music machine for your home or small get togethers with an impressive sound quality for the price ($85-129), huge display, good FM reception and a very handy remote control. Bear in mind that you may need to get the insert adapter for your specific iPod, as it happened to me with the Nano 5G because is just comes with 3 of them (iPhone 3g, nano 4g, touch). I hope this helps you as many other reviews hlped me!

JBL OnBeat 30-Pin iPod/iPhone/iPad Speaker Dock (White)

JBL OnBeat 30-Pin iPod/iPhone/iPad Speaker Dock
  • Dual Phoenix full-range transducers with computer-optimized DSP equalization deliver legendaryJBL sound
  • Docks with iPod, iPhone and iPad with rotating dock connector to orient iPod and iPhone screens in portrait or landscape mode for optimal viewing
  • Composite video output connects to TV for big-screen viewing
  • USB connects syncs and charges devices when connected to the iTunes music library

I was looking forward to this loudspeaker device and I'm happy with it even if I cannot use it as originally intended. I use my iPad as a small tv in the kitchen and figured this would be much better than my current cover that allows perfect viewing but does not help add any volume to my iPad if I move across the room. Unfortunately, since this JBL loudspeaker does not allow me to place my iPad in landscape mode (only way to view tv app or movies), it does not help me with this wish but it does have other great uses.

It looks great with its cool and compact design. It provides plenty of volume and fills even a large room but does not perform as well on heavy bass with its simple two speaker system. I thought the sound quality was very good. I was less pleased with the power button being located at the very back (inconvenient). On the back there is also the power plug (no option of batteries), usb port, audio in (for use with other mp3 players) and a video port. The remote control is slim and basic but provides all the controls needed.

It works beautifully with our iPods and iPhones (arms for specific iDevice are included). It's less bulky then our more expensive iDevice sound systems and performs just as good if not better. It's when you try to use it with an iPad that it no longer shines. Note that the included arm is for the original iPad only with instructions to request one for the iPad 2. You will need it since the dimensions for the iPad and iPad 2 are different and affect the stability while being docked. This is not a big deal. Also, you'll have to remove any case or cover on the iPad before placing onto the docking station. This was minor for me since I use a slide and click cover. More importantly, the arm does not allow for the iPad to be rotated like other iDevices. I want to be able to place my iPad in the landscape position and watch tv or movies but it is not allowed. Help me out here JBL.

If I could use the iPad on this JBL speaker docking system just like the iPod and iPhone, this system would be close to perfect (that darn power button). Even with this flaw for my personal use, I really like this system and will use it much more often than the three others we own since it's more compact (easier to move around) and provides great sound.

4.5 stars out of 5 stars (rounding up to 5)

Recently I reviewed the JBL Roxy On-Ear Earphones and I was, to put mildly, not a very kind review. But I feel that they have redeemed themselves with this product.

Pros:

~~~~~~
Easy access to the box. No jaws of life to get to the product.
Costs $100, which is decent for a device like this
Very small and easy to move around, especially for something with the ability to dock an iPad.
Sound is very clear
Charges while docking your devices
Comes with a remote (also a negative, more on that later)
It comes with holders that are gentle with your ixxxxx products.
With the iPod/iPhone you can swivel the orientation between landscape and portrait and back. Comes in handy sometimes. Doesn't work with the iPad, but you probably don't want to as it would put a lot of stress on something this small.
Cons:
~~~~~

Bass isn't the best. It is okay and matches what I would expect for $100, but you need to spend a lot more if you want unforgettable sound.

The remote doesn't work well at angles. You have to point straight on to the device to get that to work.

No physical buttons other than volume. I'd love some skip, pause, and play buttons.

I cover all of this with more detail in the video. I hope it helps. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up in the comment section.

A lot of bang for the buck. I purchased the JBL OnStage IV portable sound dock for our RV and the JBL OnBeat for our master bedroom. Both of these docks put out incredible sound quality for their size and price point. I don't like booming or thumping music filled with a lot of bass so these docks are perfect for our needs. Both offer small footprints and are very attractive in appearance. If you're looking for a very nice sound dock without overpowering bass and a price that is in line with the product, you can't go wrong with either system.

*Note: Both sound docks work with the iPhone 4S, iPod Nano and iPod Classic which I have (in addition to older models) and the JBL On Beat also accommodates my iPad (original).

Was given this by a friend. The speakers sound great and it's great looking. The only real fault I found was the bracket for the dock wouldn't fit my iPad very well unless I removed the iPad from its protective sleeve. I would recommend it as long as you don't mind removing your protective sleeve. Also kinda wished the arms on the bracket weren't cheap plastic or a little stronger constructed

Energizer Max AA, 16 Count + 4 Free Pack Batteries, 20- Total BatteriesIf you are looking to order this item, then most likely you are already familiar with Energizer Max batteries. They are ideal for digital cameras as they last much longer in high-tech devices than regular energizer batteries. The main reason to purchase them on Amazon is the great price when ordering the large pack.

Did NOT get what I ordered. I paid for Energizer MAX as shown in the photo and description title, but I got Energizer Industrial batteries. I use Energizer Industrial at my work and they are NOT the same as Energizer MAX. The batteries came in an OPENED but TAPED UP package that was supposed to hold 6 individual packs of 4 batteries which would have totaled 24 batteries if the other pack was in the box. Obviously, the order was for only 20 batteries, so there were only 5 packs in the box leaving an open slot for the missing pack of 4. How ghetto is that?!?! I have ordered the 24 pack Energizer industrial boxes before and the batteries do not seem to last any where near as long as the Energizer MAX ones do. I will not buy from uTrust ever again. I did not get what I paid for and to make matters worse, they didn't even ship the product till I complained almost 3 weeks after they printed a shipping label but never shipped the item (That was, until I said something then POOF...magically they appeared at my doorstep 3 days later and the Delivery Confirmation finally showed progress the day AFTER I complained about where the heck they were! I got the tracking information on the 15th of June but it wasn't scanned by the USPS until 3 weeks later? Are you kidding ME!?! I worked in a warehouse as a shipper for over 15 years. These people just LIE. And I checked the feedback that proved it.). I realize this review is only supposed to be about the batteries, but because the seller is the one selling the product I am reviewing, I will review the seller here too. My advice, buy these from someone else and make sure you GET what you paid for.

There was one battery in particular in the pack that had corrosion and rust.

Always check out the pack before using any of them!

This is our second unit. Decent price. Does what it's supposed to do. Very loud, so if getting surprised by weather while you're sleeping is what you are trying to avoid, this is the unit for you.

You do have to set it up for your area to make it affective. Otherwise it will go off all the time and drive you crazy.

I have actually programmed a dozen or more of these for my friends who weren't able to figure them out.

It has a selection of stations so you can receive the one closest to you, and you can program in your own county so that you don't have to hear all of the alerts in your area.

We recently moved and we had to reprogram ours without instructions. It took me awhile, but we got everything right.

My only complaint is that occasionally when the stand is separated from the power supply there is a surge and I have to reset everything.

I enjoy this model because we can take it in the car with us when we need to stay on top of the weather.

Works well. It will definitely wake you out of a sound sleep. Very portable--great for taking it into the basement while you're waiting for the tornado warning sirens to stop...

I bought this weather alert radio because I wanted something that I could grab and take with me if I needed to head downstairs during a tornado. The problem with this radio is that it is not easy to set the date, time, or the selected stations. The instructions are not clear, so I gave it to my husband who is a whiz at these things and he struggled with it. We still aren't sure we have it set correctly! Don't think I'd choose this one again. Just hope it works when it needs to!

Nice little stereo with alarm clock that lets you wake up to your Ipod and more importantly the specific song. Some just shuffle this one doesn't. There's a glow from the clock but not so bright that it really illuminates the room so you can't sleep. My only problem is that it's hard to read the time and I don't know if it's the blue background (which most of them have lately), that if the time could be darker against that background and it would be easier to see or my bad vision. I don't recall having this difficulty with previous clocks that had red against black. All in all I'm pretty happy with it. The remote is a nice feature although I don't really use it.

Hey all,

I got this dock for Christmas this year. I was really excited with all its features. However, when i plugged it in I faced some issues. One, the light up blue background light is bright and if you like your room dark when you're sleeping it will keep you up all night (that's why I returned mine). Also the blue glow makes it hard to read the time in the middle of the night as oppose to those older clocks that showed up in red numbers. I also found that it was hard to get the remote to work from certain angles. All in all, I think its a great product if you don't mind the blue light when you're sleeping.

The functions of this product are good, but there are two downfalls. One is that the light, even in dim mode is very bright. We have to turn it upside down to block the light so it doesn't keep us awake. Its much brighter than any nightlight. The other, more irritating problem is that when using it as an alarm clock it has an automatic volume of 10 which cannot be changed. The volume is so loud that it can be heard outside of a room with a door closed! It scares you awake in the morning! This was a bad purchase.

The display on this alarm clock dock is simultaneously blinding and unreadable. My wife has perfect vision and she has to ask me what time it is when she is 6 feet away.

This device does not charge iPods reliably about half the time it will simply not charge despite a working audio dock connection.

Shipping was faster than expected. The speakers work well but do have a very little fuzzy sound. They have a good range of volume. The item did work with the Ipod Nano 3rd generation.
