Rio S35S Sport Digital Audio Player

Rio S35S Sport Digital Audio Player
  • 128 MB on-board memory; expandable up to 256 MB via MMC cards
  • Supports MP3 or WMA files; upgradeable for future music formats; PC and Mac compatible
  • Integrated FM tuner, clock, and stopwatch; water and impact resistant
  • Up to 10 hours' playback on one AAA battery; accepts NiMH rechargeables
  • Includes earbuds, carry case with clip and armband, AAA battery, USB cable, and music management software

I've been running for about a year now and have found that my endurance has increased throughout the months. This meant that my time spent running became longer, which then lead to a need for keeping my mind busy with music. In the past I've used several methods of listening while running (holding a cd player, making mixed tapes, radio sets) and they all failed miserably. So I forked out the money to purchase this little guy because it was right up my alley: a. 128mb is more than enough music for me and b. my computer is my home jukebox, w/all my cds ripped to my hard drive.

Pros:

-rubberized casing that is part of the player (practical and stylish)

-came with an arm strap and belt clip, I prefer the belt clip

-pretty small for an upgradeable device

-added feature of a stopwatch

-single 'AAA' battery

-nice integration with XP

Cons:

-stopwatch is a little difficult to access.

-"lock" requires holding two buttons...not that bad

-bundled software (Rio Music Manager) is not that great

-could've done without the display to make it cheaper

Bottom Line:

It's a great player for exercising, but I'm sure Rio could've abandoned the need for a display and backlight. Personally, I feel there's no need to display the song title because I remember what I uploaded to the player. But I'm happy because I have the opportunity to upgrade it in the near future!

I love my new SonicBlue Rio! After having read every user review ...I had some reservations with the key complaints (which were relatively minor to begin with): FM radio, software use/compatibility, and headset comfort. But given Amazon.com's competitively low price by far, I went ahead with the purchase.

When I received it (approx. 2 days using regular shipping), I had prepared myself to encounter problems with the aforementioned. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find the FM stereo feature not only works very well, but it did so both at the office (inside a 5-story building) and at the gym (converted industrial steel & concrete building). While the FM radio feature is usually not the reason one buys an MP3 player, it does come in handy when tuning into the TV monitors at the gym.

The software installed quickly and is very user-friendly. The downloads only take a matter of minutes for an entire playlist.

The earphones/headset is not only comfortable, but fits securely in both ears. The overall quality of sound is quite good, but as other users have mentioned, if you're a real audiophile, simply invest in a better headset that provides the heavy bass, etc. Otherwise, I doubt one would notice the difference much.

The unit itself fits ergonomically in either hand. The backlighting in the display is very useful, but the text can be too small to read when engaged in rigorous workouts, but that's somewhat expected in such a compact device anyway. The option to wear it on your arm or use the belt clip is also a big plus.

I don't know if it helps to lower one's expectations, but this unit worked out very well for me. After thoroughly comparing it to others in and out of it's class, I'd highly recommend this product. It's well worth the small investment! The only thing missing is a "free set of Ginsu Knives" to accompany it!

I was getting fed up of the talkshows in the morning and the advertising tirades in the evening on my sony tuner while working-out. I depend on music quite a lot for my running, so finally had to break down and buy an mp3 player. I am so glad I chose S35S, because it fits everything I had in mind. Light, tough, efficient and trendy. I upgraded to 256MB about a day after the purchase. The 128MB MMC (card) is about 80 bucks, but a good investment as it doubles the song numbers. I have about 100 songs in .WMA(the only way to go, since mp3 is usually about double the file size as wma) saved with some space left over, and with the shuffle mode on, working out to music is a breeze. Battery life is very good, about 10-12 hours on 1 AAA. I also upgraded to a Sony streetstyle (MDR57 ??) headphones which are much better than the supplied ones. The back-lit display and menu options are very easy to learn and operate.

The set up software couldn't be easier to use, with downloading and managing the songs the fastest I have seen.

There is a mail-in rebate offered by SonicBlue till January 03, so go for it right now, if you're in the market for a mp3 player for the fitness minded folks, or anyone for that matter.

The only negative is an abysmal tuner that fails to do anything, and will probably recieve a signal if you operate this inside a radio station. So that is a waste. And hence the 4 stars.

Counting that out, this is a great product, and since I am not missing the tuner at all, I would highly recommend this product.

An Update: After about a couple of months, I managed to crush my precious lil mp3 player under my truck tires in a freak accident. May be this would be an attestment to it's toughness, the display was broken, but the lil thing has refused to quit playing..Lets see your cd player beat that.

I bought this mp3 player and I am extremely satisfied with it. The player has a lot of functions including a stopwatch, FM radio, equalizer, etc... There are definitly no bugs in the program and very easy to use.

PROS:

1. Small (very small!!!), durable and handy

2. The software was excellent, no crashing, no stalling, and a fast transfer too! The program split the window into two parts, one is my library and the other is the files on the player. All the ID3 tags (tags that display the name, author, etc of a song)should be automatically added if you label them in Musicmatch, Real jukebox, or any other player.

3. Water and compact resistant (extremely durable, i even dropped it a few times on concrete and it still worked!)I ran in the rain once, it was working perfectly

4. Big LCD screen to display time, battery level, song title, song artist, album, a location thingy to display how far u are into the song, volume indicator, how much time left, how much time already past, and date. The resolution is very fine so the date and the time is not all distorted.

5. There are amazing functions including a treble/bass equalizer that doesn't distort the quality of the sound

6. The stopwatch includes laps, an average time, and the difference between each lap

7. The radio has a search option with 3 savable channels

8. A power saving capability to save power (cutting off backlight time and a saving power mode that acts like a screen saver)

9. A menu option to browse all the songs

10. Light and handy, i ran with it and almost forgot it was still clipped on my shorts

11. The cd also comes with iTunes and RealOne, both really nice music managing programs

CONS:

1. The big round set that has the Play, FF, RW, and Stop is easy to hit so you can't walk around with it in your pockets, on the other hand it is a good thing for running because no one would like to struggle pressing the FF button while keeping a even pace =)

2. The earphones aren't as comfortable

3. There is no remote control...

4. It uses an MMC card for expansion and MMC cards are usually 10 more bucks than Smart Media

5. It's a little thicker than most mp3's players (u can check up the dimensions) and its round shape looks a little babyish & toyish...

6. SONICblue boasts up to 10 hrs on one AAA battery, I only get around 5 hours....

7. no microphone...

8. there are no detailed instructions, just a quick start. The detailed instructions are found in the CD program

Overall this player is outstanding and I think that SONICblue has hit the target. As a runner, no other mp3 player would match this player's size, weight, and ease of use!!! The package comes with an armband, a belt clip, a pair of earphones, a cd software, and of course, the mp3 player! Again I would definitly recommend this for runners, or people who do sports. I would not recommend this for people looking for an mp3 player that is cute and small with advance features.

So three days before the Tucson marathon my Sony NWS-4 died on me. I was about to buy the Nike sports mp3 player when I saw a pretty good review for the S35s. Amazon.com overnighted it to me in time for the run. Within 30 minutes of receiving the package, I had the player loaded with music and ready to go. The PC interface and software are very easy to use; and unlike the Sony, they rip your CD's to mp3 not some propietary format.

The headphones are comfortable and didn't bother me at all for the duration of my run (over 4 hours). But, I found the controls a bit lacking. Buttons that I'm often searching for while running were hard to find (like volume). Others, like play and pause, were not recessed and were far too sensitive to the touch. So, any amount of bumping and you can start skipping or fast forwarding. And forget about trying to switch from mp3 to FM radio while running. You have to use the tiny little plasma display and start scrolling through the menu. Maybe on a long walk or a treadmill you could do this. But not while engaged in something highly strenuous. I couldn't even read the display with the player strapped to my arm. I tried taking it off and switching, but I only succeeded in turning off all music.

Basically, this is a very good item that could use some work on the look and feel of its controls. The Sony was a much better engineered package but it cost more and had only half as much memory. If you have time to figure out the controls it will probably serve you quite well. I cannot comment on the reliability, as I've only had mine a short while.

This is my second after market Sony CD player in my old 1990 Geo Prizm. The first sony I bought in 1998 and after 8 years, the CD skipped quite a bit on the horrible roads of San Francisco. Yes, you would think a world class city would take care of it with HUGE taxes. Well no. Anyways, it was time to replace the old. This CDX-300 is a terrific sounding player. The blue backlight displays the song/artist/album name of the mp3 discs that can be made for it. About 200 songs fit onto one CD! You can put every song from an artist onto one disc. For example, I put every album of RUSH onto one disc. There is an album button to go to the next album. Its pretty amazing for the price. The remote is a welcome feature I never knew they had. Its very safe to use as its easy to memorize the few buttons on the remote. Well worth the money.

Friend of mine gave me this stereo it's EXCELLENT. Sound is AMAZING. Installation was a breeze. I got a wiring harness from Best Buy for my Corolla and it was a piece of cake. I put new speakers in my car last year and this thing sure takes advantage of them! Sounds amazing. It DID play cds with mp3s and wmas burned on them BUT CDs burned with the newest version of iTunes DO NOT WORK. NO IDEA WHY!? Anyhow other than that this thing is excellent.

Want Sony CDX-GT300 CD/MP3/ATRAC Receiver Discount?

This radio has all I ever wanted. I can play 11 hours of music on one CD when in MP3 format. The display is readable from any angle. The remote is a fantastic feature to prevent a distraction from looking at the radio for its buttons. The sound is awesome and crisp. The equilizer has preprogammed and custom settings. It has inputs and outputs for all your demanding needs. And all this for under $100. Unbelievable. I recommend to all.

I'd like to point out some things that other users haven't yet about this stereo. I don't like the fact that I can't control the bass and treble. Instead, there's this thing on the stereo where you control the highs, mids, and lows. I'm no sound genius so I don't understand what this means yet. Another thing that isn't so hot about this deck is the way it attaches/detaches. It's really hard to put the stereo on since you're trying to connect a little hinge on each side of the deck. That alone discourages me from taking the faceplate off even if I park somewhere that I think my stereo could get stolen. By the way, even the high-end sony decks that flip out attach and detach the same way that this one does. It's a really bad design in my opinion. The last thing I don't like is when you've had your stereo on, turn the car off, and turn it back on, the stereo doesn't turn on automatically -you have to press the source button again. I guess I got really used to my Panasonic deck which had none of these issues, so I'll just have to get used to this sony. I found it at a pawn shop so I only bought it because it was cheap. I'm not going to say that there's nothing good about this deck... there is. But it seems that right now, the bad aspects of this deck are standing out in my mind.

I hope this applies to this model as well, but I have a 10+ year old previous model of this Sony Shower Radio that is still going strong. My model even had a TV band that I could listen to local TV broadcasts before the change to digital. Mine also came with an external antennae which help provide great reception. The batteries seem to last an exceptionally long time. This is a well built, long lasting product. IF mine ever stops working, it will have served me very well and I will be buying this one (of the current model) to replace it.

This radio lasted 12 years before it died. That's longer than my actual shower lasted before I had another one built! And the batteries lasted a couple years before needing replacing (and I take long showers). I thought this was such a good product that today I am buying another one and am looking forward to many years of service from it. The radio tuned in both AM and FM remarkably well although it's best to take advantage of the antenna for some stations that don't put out a huge signal. If only everything lasted so long as this radio.

This is sturdy, good quality, and the batteries seem to last forever. I love the station presets and the controls on top. I actually carry this from shower to kitchen, as I'm still looking for a plug-in kitchen radio. And even though it gets played for around four hours every day, the three C batteries last for several months at a time. I've only changed them out once in six months. Only reason it doesn't have four stars is that I wish it had a hook for hanging. It does have a rope that you can hang if you have a hook in your shower. But there's no way to hang it on the shower rod, which I could do with some of my previous shower radios. Still, I believe it's well worth the price.

I bought this with the car mount kit, so I could have XM in the car and wherever else I go. Figured, wow! This is a GREAT idea, all I have to do is buy a compatible portable device (because they say that in their advertisement) and no more dismounting a portable unit from my car and snapping it into a boombox. Now, all I'll have to do is plug in this card right? Wrong! Where are the compatible portable devices as advertised? Maybe I'm missing something here... Please correct me if I'm wrong. However, If I'm not wrong, then don't buy this if your looking for something to move from the car to a boombox because the technology isn't there!

It kind of bothered me when I discovered I would need to purchase an additional accessory to make my XM function on $1200 receiver however that's the way it was. This unit does everything is promises, XM comes through my system crystal clear.

They give you plenty of antenna cord to get it to where you need.

I did have an issue when I initially hooked up the XM where a screaming static would come through rather than music until I re-powered the system each time wound up I had a defective Denon receiver.

All is well now highly recommended.

Coby CXCD236 CD Boombox with AM/FM

Coby CXCD236 CD Boombox with AM/FM
  • Top loading compact disc player/Plays regular CDs and CDs with MP3 files
  • CD, CD-R, CD-RW compatible
  • Play/Pause, search, repeat (repeat 1, repeat all) functions
  • AM/FM stereo tuner/FM telescopic FM antenna/Wide range speaker system

I'm a bit confused as to some of the negative reviews for this CD player. It is not advertised as having a flash drive nor does it say you can play an MP3 player through it. It states it will play CDs with MP3 files on it. Big difference. Also, complaints about the tuner not being digital...nowhere is it advertised to be. People really should read the description of the product before buying it and then complaining about it in a review.

This is a great CD player. I've had it for several weeks now and have never had an issue with it at all. CDs play fine and the radio (AM & FM) come in crystal clear. I would definitely recommend this CD player to someone looking for a no-frills player that works extremely well for the price. Compact, light-weight and EXTREMELY easy to use. My six-year-old daughter uses it with no problem at all. HIGHLY recommended.

Before ordering this little boombox, I read most of the reviews. Like some of the others, I am puzzled at the negative reviews given by some of the buyers. They criticized it for options it doesn't include (and never claimed to include). I bought it to replace a much higher priced RCA model that I used at office. After daily use for several years, that boombox stopped working. It was actually too large for the space on my desk and when I started shopping on Amazon (I buy nearly everything there now) to find a replacement I was looking for something smaller. The size of the item was the selling point for me. However, when I received it and hooked it up at work, I was delighted to find that it receives radio stations much better than the top of the line RCA that I was using. There is nothing about it that I don't like. My favorite things about it are price, size, headphones jack, and ease of use. I give it 5 stars for pleasantly surprising me with everything I wanted at a bargain price.

I got this from a work incentive/reward program so I didn't buy it. Paired it with a set of Coby 2:1 stereo speakers to make kind of a MacGuyver shelf stereo. Everything worked fine at first: the CD player itself can crank out some excellently loud music, and the additional speakers were outstanding. The only downside was that every time I turned the player on it would send a loud buzz to the speakers for a few seconds, or until I switched to an active output like radio. This is a sure sign of static in the device, and by extension cheap, unshielded internal parts. But free version of a cheapo device, you get what you pay for.

Now though, about a year later, the CD player has basically died. The problem seems to be the spindlehalf the time you press play it won't spin up, and it stops at random mid-play. The radio is still going strong, but this isn't a radioit's a CD player that happens to have a radio built into it.

The lesson here seems to be that Coby makes some rad thumpin' speakers for cheap, but their competence with other hardware leaves a little to be desired.

PROS:

-Looks nice

-Cheap

-Radio part works okay

-Decent speakers

CONS:

-Unshielded stereo jack port

-CD player is unreliable

-Overall build quality feels cheap and fragile

SANGEAN WR-11 AM/FM Table Top Radio

SANGEAN WR-11 AM/FM Table Top Radio
  • Wooden Cabinet
  • Veneer Tuning
  • Led Tuning Indicator
  • Extrordinary Sound
  • External Am/Fm Ant Sel Switch

In my small kitchen, I have only a tiny space for a radio between one cabinet and a microwave oven, and I wanted to find the best sound I could reasonably afford to put there. I also wanted to avoid anything powered by a "vampire" wall-wart transformer; when I turn off the radio, I want it to stop drawing any power. The Sangean WR-11 fills both those needs admirably.

When I first plugged it in, I tuned it to a local traditional-jazz station (WBGO-FM) playing a Brubeck quartet, and I was amazed by how much integrity its little speaker gave the sound of a plucked upright bass! Some had complained about this radio's predecessor, the WR-1, that its bass was too boomy. I don't find any evidence of that at all with the WR-11, except on the one or two FM rock stations that really do a sloppy job of boosting the bass in their equalization; and even in those cases, the WR-11 never really loses control of the sound.

As I primarily use this radio as a receiver for my own home FM transmitter (broadcasting whatever audio stream or MP3 that my computer is playing) these stations aren't much of an issue for me, nor is the fairly pedestrian AM section. On both FM and AM, reception and selectivity are strong, and the tuning dial (with a tuning "eye" LED) is both pleasant to use and accurate in feel.

The only drawback this radio has displayed so far (and the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five, after about half a day's use) is a range on the lower end of the volume control where it seems unable to stick at a particular volume, slipping randomly up and down a bit in volume even though I'm not touching the knob. If I were using this radio in a bedroom, I might be concerned about this -but in the relatively noisy environs of the kitchen, I'm not likely to have the volume knob in this particular position often.

All in all, at $100, this radio is every bit a match for the Tivoli Model One in a slightly shorter package. At $50 (what I paid for it) it's an absolute steal.

Buy SANGEAN WR-11 AM/FM Table Top Radio Now

I bought this radio for my 84 year old understandably technophobic Mother. Simplicity was the order of the day. Old fashioned knobs and station indicator fit the bill perfectly. The receiver section is pretty good. My Mother lives in a rural area where most major markets are 60+ miles away. FM stations from as far away as 35-45 miles pulled in with simple wire antenna that is include and all of the AM stations that were tradionally available in her area were received with good quality.

Speaking for myself, the audio has too much bass. Combine that with the absence of a simple tone knob to allow the user to change the bass/treble balance leaves me scratching my head and wondering what the people of Sangean were thinking when they decided a tone knob wasn't necessary. I might be tempted to plug the bass port on the back of the radio with something to see if that cuts down the amount of bass output if I had bought it for myself. It's not for critical music listening but isn't bad for background music and listening to the news.

But it made my Mom happy to have a radio that she knows how to use. And the audio quality deficiency doesn't bother her. When she was a kid audio quality from electronics was crappy. For this purchase, the 3 star rating reflects my Mother's positive comments minus my critical remarks about audio quality.

Surely they can find a spot for a tone knob.

I was unable to purchase a simple table top radio without attachments such as a CD player or Ipod docking station in any of our local stores, even the large chain ones. I found just what I was looking for at Amazon.com; ordered it quickly and easily; it arrived safely in the time specified; and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! It was meant to be a kitchen counter radio but due to its good looks it has a place of honor in the living room. My favorite am station has a clarity I have never been able to achieve on any other radio. Thank you I love my new Sangean table top radio!

Want SANGEAN WR-11 AM/FM Table Top Radio Discount?

It took me a full week to talk myself into paying $85 for a simple AM/FM table radio. After all the research, I'm glad I did it. It is worth the money spent.

I was looking for a radio for my office after yet another of those cheap clock radios died. I was sick of the tinny sounding, fading in and out, scratchy volume control, throw-away nature of the two or three radios I've had in my office. I decided I wanted to look for a quality sounding radio that would hold a station solidly that I wouldn't have to replace in a couple of years.

Enter the Sangean WR-11

It fits the bill. The three stations I tend to tune in while working at my office come in clear as a bell and do not fade. The sound quality is such that I can turn the volume down much lower than with the other radios and still hear it perfectly (a pleasant surprise.) I recommend this whole heartedly for an office radio.

Pros-

-Nice looking retro enclosure. I thought the wood-grain might look cheap but it is actually quite nice.

-Very smooth tuning. Easy to fine-tune a station.

-Good sound.

-Very functional external FM antenna greatly improving reception.

-Nice size. Not too big, not too small. A clock sits nicely on top completing the office desk setting.

Cons-

-It would be nice to have a tone control so you can adjust the bass a bit. Not a big deal really as the sound is superb.

-I would prefer to have a power button instead of an "off/FM/AM" selector. Sometimes I hit the volume control when I'm trying to turn the radio on or off. Very trivial criticism but there is plenty of real estate for such a feature. Again not a big deal at all.

The only reason this review got four stars instead of five is that I left the "dependability" rating blank because I haven't had the radio long enough to honestly evaluate that. I didn't realize that would knock the overall rating down. So be it. It is a five star radio as far as I'm concerned.

I purchased this radio for my 89 year old mom who has physical limitations, including challenged vision, and who can't tolerate new technology. She had inspected many radios, sold locally, and refused to give any of them a try. They were "plastic, cheap, contraptions." So you can understand my apprehension, purchasing this one for her, sight unseen. When I delivered the radio, she watched apprehensively, as I pulled it from the box. Then with closer inspection, it was love-at-first-site. She literally caressed the walnut cabinet commenting, "This looks like an old-timey, radio---just what I wanted."

Simply put, this solidly built little radio has timeless elegance, coupled with ultimate simplicity and I found it outperformed any table-top radio I have ever had. The sound is clear and rich and once tuned to a channel, there is no annoying channel drift, or static. I was amazed at how the sound filled the room, from such a small package. There is a tuning light that indicates when you have the best reception in your area, for a particular channel. FM sounds awesome, and I found no problems with weak AM reception, or not picking up channels.

My mom has always had a radio at her bedside, to lull her to sleep. With only three knobs controlling operation she commented, "I can actually reach over and operate it in the dark." If you knew my mom, you'd know why I'm celebrating my victory. She's been around the block a few times and is tough to please! She demands quality!

I'm so fond of this radio that I'm considering ordering one for myself. It is attractive enough to make a nice addition to any room and I'm sure that many visitors would want to know 'where'd you get that,' since it's increasingly hard to find quality workmanship these days.
