Well I figured I just had to have a new alarm clock for my iPhone. I had been using an iHome Alarm with an adapter and was very happy to see this one on the market. However, in practice I was not that thrilled with it. It's kinda like an old $10. alarm from Radio Shack. It works but nothing about it really stands out as excellent. The iPhone 5 does fit into the connector and the alarm comes with a support bracket to help alleviate some of the pressure on the plug which is a great idea. Did I mention the alarms, radio, etc. all work? Yes, they all do.

However, to plug in the iPhone takes some work and does not fit so smoothly. (I came to appreciate the recessed area of my iHome alarm that causes the iPhone to just fit perfectly as it guides you in) In fact I prefer using the adapter on my old alarm to inserting the iPhone into this alarm as its just easier and smoother. I mentioned that $10. Radio Shack alarm? That's about the quality of the sound that this produces and the glaring red light is also akin to that old $10. alarm. Overall a functional product but if you like a better sound quality and better engineered products as I have become accustom too I would suggest you wait for the iHome version.

Eton NPT200WXB Rover Self-Powered Weather Radio with Flashlight and USB Cell Phone Charger

Eton NPT200WXB Rover Self-Powered Weather Radio with Flashlight and USB Cell Phone Charger
  • AM (520-1710 KHz) & FM (87-108MHz), NOAA weatherband - all 7 channels, 3 Built-in white LED light source
  • Self-powered aluminum crank with TurboDyne technology, Direct USB power transfer (includes USB cable), Rechargeable lithium-ion battery, 3.5 mm headphone output
  • Telescopic antenna provided for maximum range and reception
  • Includes: USB cable, owner's manual, warranty card

Awesome little bit of kit.... Heavy made, uses a li-po battery. Crank is like something off an M1 Abrams main battle tank. Am reception is ok, FM reception is very good, wx reception is pretty good. Charges iPhone 4 no problem. Not crazy about the goofy ring to change bands/modes. And for such a heavy duty unit, it has a tiny fragile little telescopic whip.

One issue... All the text on the unit ("Volume" "Tuning" "AM FM WB1 etc" "Eton" "Rover") rubbed right off! I was holding it with one hand and cranking with the other and noticed one of the words was smudged... not thirty seconds later I had completely rubbed off EVERY bit of text on the unit as if it were never there. I know some people have some kind of harsh sweat that does this sort of thing but I have never had anything do this before. I don't really mind, I know what the controls do and I actually think it looks better this way but it all just rubbed right off!! Like it was written with dry erase marker!! I know this will cause a problem with some users at the worst possible time.

The device charges my HTC Evo phone via USB. I think it is one of the only hand crank flashlights on the market that can charge smartphones. I assume it would charge the iPhone 4 as well. Out of the box I plugged it into my phone with an extended battery it went from 50% to 60% charge before the battery on the flashlight was completely dead. It could be useful to charge your phone to get you by in a pinch however if your main goal is to have a self powered way to charge your smartphone without connecting to the grid you may want to reconsider. A cheaper external battery pack that can fully charge your phone may be a better option even if you have to recharge the battery pack via AC or DC power.

Around 30 seconds of hand cranking gave me over 30 minutes of LED lighting. That was pretty impressive. The flashlight is pretty bright and covers a wide area. The beam is fairly focused as well. However because this unit is quite large it would be pretty hard to use as your everyday flashlight.

The unit is built fairly solid and looks great but I can tell a drop from a few feet onto a hard surface would probably cause some damage. Luckily it comes with a strap so you can attach it around your wrist to reduce the chance of an accidental drop. It would be nice if there was a hand grip but their isn't.

In the San Francisco Bay Area I was barely able to receive any radio stations indoors. There were a few AM stations that came in but FM was all static. My cheap alarm radio without an external antenna can pick up pretty much any station whereas this device can't. There are several weather stations that are preprogrammed on the dial. All of those come in clear.

Overall this is good product but kind of expensive for what you get. In retrospect I would have been better off getting a small flashlight, radio, and external cellphone battery pack for a emergency kit.

Update: After having this thing for a month I realized the dial that switches between AM/FM/Weather radio is loose. If I hold the dial with a solid grip the radio stations come in clear however as soon as I release it pure static. Most likely I got a radio with a manufacturing defect. Hopefully others that order this product wont have the same problem and have to deal with returning it to amazon. Even if everything worked perfectly I still would only give this 3 stars based on the cost/value.

This unit is convenient, well designed and handy. It is lighter, smaller and in some ways more capable than its more expensive Axis brother and the FR series units. More advanced battery (Li-Poly). Greater charge in less crank time. Fully chargeable using a USB cord attached to an AC adapter. When fully charged, the radio can run for hours. Can charge cellphones when you are NOT cranking unlike other units. Analogue tuning allows use both in the United States and overseas. Digital units do not have that capability.

Just arrived, had it out of the box for an hour so far. Ill update this comment with cell phone charging tests and longevity battery life. So far so good..... At first I didnt like the way the flash light button depressed. It felt squishy but then I realized its good to go and also you dont have to fully depress the button so you can kind of use it like a strobe function. Button just needed a little breaking in. Picked up some FM stations, tested the weather, cranked it a few times. Flash light came bright out of the box, its enough to light up a dark room thats for sure. This is no piece of junk, I cant wait to put it to the cell phone test, after about 2 hours of research this is the self powered radio I chose. Prettyyyyyyyyy cool. Little expensive but worth it. Going in my bug out bag, already found a little hershey kisses tin to keep it in to protect it from weather and crunches.

Save $0.05 Off

It is compact while providing a lot of options. I like the fact that it contains a flashlight, a radio (including emergency channels) and can charge a USB device. It is very sturdy and the crank does not feel like it would easily break. Overall, a good item to have especially when living in San Francisco where we expect the 'big one' anytime soon!

JBL On Time 200P Loudspeaker iPod Dock and Clock Radio for iPhone (Black)

JBL On Time 200P Loudspeaker iPod Dock and Clock Radio for iPhone
  • Compatible with all docking versions of the iPod and all iPhone models
  • Easy volume and source touch controls--system remembers your last setting after shutdown
  • Wake to your favorite song from your iPod or iPhone or a buzzer alarm
  • Large backlit LCD with automatic dimming, for easy viewing and menu navigation in any environment
  • Backup battery allows alarm function to operate in the event of power outage

A week ago, my trustworthy old clock/radio/CD player finally died after over 10 years of faithful service. When I started looking for a replacement clock/radio, I realized that I didn't care about having a CD player any more, but it would be really useful if I could use it as a docking station/speaker to play music on my iPod or iPhone.

For me, the most frustrating obstacle that I ran into as I searched through various products and reviews was a lack of comprehensive and accurate information regarding compatibility with different iPod/iPhone models! I have a 3rd generation iPod nano and an iPhone 4, and I wanted a dock that would be compatible with either device. For several docking stations, I found that Amazon, the Apple store and the manufacturer's own website had 3 different versions of which iPods/iPhones the dock was supposedly compatible with so which should I believe?

In the end, I was debating between the iHome iP90 and the JBL On Time 200P, and the compatibility issue ended up being the deciding factor. Several reviewers commented that the iHome iP90 only came with docking inserts for a few iPod/iPhone models (not including the iPhone 4), so they had to visit the iHome website to purchase an additional insert to fit the iPhone 4 that cost an extra $5.99 plus shipping. If I'm already paying for a pricy docking station, I want it to be compatible with my devices out of the box; I don't want to mess around with ordering and paying for extra inserts. Since the JBL On Time 200P was advertised on several websites as being compatible with all docking versions of iPod/iPhone, I decided to see for myself... And it was!

**PROS**

1. Compatibility!! Box contains multiple inserts/adaptors that make it compatible with ALL current docking versions of iPod/iPhone. I was able to plug in both my iPod nano 3rd gen and my iPhone 4 with no problems, and listen to music while they charged at the same time!

2. Great overall sound quality (see CONS section for exceptions).

3. Very sleek and stylish design.

4. Bright blue display makes the time clearly visible from across the room. (That said, I put my JBL On Time 200P in the kitchen but if you want to use this device in the bedroom as an alarm clock, I'm not sure whether the display would be too bright...)

5. Simple and clear instruction manual easy to program/use.

6. You can receive incoming calls while the iPhone is plugged into the docking station. Whatever you're listening to gets automatically muted, and the iPhone rings just like normal!

**CONS**

1. The lowest volume setting is not as quiet as I would like I can still hear it clearly in the next room.

2. The sound quality gets a bit distorted if you turn the volume all the way up.

Overall conclusion: I'm very satisfied with the JBL On Time 200P and would definitely recommend it, especially if you've got multiple different iPod/iPhone models and want a device that's compatible with all of them.

Buy JBL On Time 200P Loudspeaker iPod Dock and Clock Radio for iPhone (Black) Now

I bought this unit mainly because I needed an alarm clock and wanted one packaged with a radio and iphone dock. That being said, this was almost the perfect unit except for one major thing and a few quibbles.

The major problem: the display is waaay too bright!!! I buy an alarm clock for the purpose of waking me up at a very specific time, not to keep me awake all through the night. You can adjust the brightness, but even at it's lowest setting, a blue glow is cast throughout most of my bedroom (12 x 12 feet). It's really mind boggling that the designers could over look this. I'm not the type of person who needs to sleep in pitch black darkness. I can tolerate a night light plugged in by the bed, but the display is way brighter than that.

You can turn off the display completely, but I think it's inconvenient and somewhat illogical. With the display off, it's hard to find the buttons to push in the first place since it's now... dark in the room. Furthermore, it is a clock after all and I would like to know the time without having to push a button... if I could find the buttons in the dark.

PROS:

-Has radio and iphone dock (3G,4)

-Great sound for it's size

-Compact size and stylish

-Has remote

-Backup battery

CONS:

-Display is too bright.

-As others have stated, the alarm is very loud!

-There is no single button surfing for radio presets. You have to hit three buttons to go from one preset to the next. Idiotic. I thought presets were supposed to be convenient.

I bought this alarm clock/speaker from 6ave on Amazon 2 weeks ago and am very happy.

The only problem I have, which is mentioned in other reviews, is that the lowest volume setting is a little loud when the house is quiet in the morning and other people are sleeping. It also automatically keeps increasing the volume up to a certain point until you hit snooze or turn the alarm off.

Also, it works with my iPod Nano 5th generation, but didn't come with the right base adapter, so I have to use the white one that came with my iPod. The dock comes with multiple clear adapters, so people with iPhones or other iPod versions may not have to order/use one they already have.

Things I love:

~It has 7 completely independent alarms, each of which can be set to wake to radio, iPod/iPhone, buzzer, or auxiliary player (cord included). Each alarm can be set for a certain day of the week, weekdays, weekends, one time, or 7 days a week!!! I haven't seen another alarm clock with so many options!!!

~You can set the snooze to however many minutes you want! My old clock snoozed for 7 minutes, with no options.

~The screen includes TONS of information including showing which alarm time(s) are set, if the sleep feature is on and for how many more minutes (15, 30 & 60 min options), it gives the time and day of the week, radio station/artist/song when the radio is on, etc.

~It has 10 digital radio presets which makes it quick and easy to run through your favorite stations, AM or FM. (No more scroll wheel for me!)

~The speaker is a good size for a night stand and nice design.

~The buttons are very intuitive and by the second day I could navigate everything easily in the dark.

~AM/FM reception in my location is good without the external antennas.

~The screen has adjustable brightness and contrast settings.

~The remote is a nice feature, but some people have complained about it's durability. I don't expect to use it much, but it's nice to have. It also controls your iPod/iPhone menus so you can change songs or playlists.

~It charges your iPod/iPhone while docked. I was surprised many other systems don't.

~Lighted buttons make navigating menus in the dark a breeze.

UPDATE: After having this speaker dock for exactly 1 month the display died. I only got a blue screen with no text no matter what I did. I called JBL since it's under warranty and they had me troubleshoot a few things to make sure the contrast wasn't just turned down, then had me fax my receipt and they are sending me another unit. In the meantime, I'm left using my cell phone as an alarm... At least their customer service is good.

UPDATE 2/6/13: I haven't had any problems with the replacement unit and have been very happy with it the last year and a half. I would buy it again.

Got one of these in June 2011. About two weeks ago the display went blank. Can't do anything with it now except charge my iPod. A very expensive paperweight.

Long Overdue Edit: Contacted JBL and they replaced the unit. My daughter is using it and loves it. Changed to 4 stars.

  • 10 station presets and auto seek function
  • Water resistant up to JIS7 standard

I spent a lot of time reviewing other waterproof shower radios, and this one seemed to have a lot of customer satisfaction. I've been using this radio for about 4 weeks now. Such a big improvement of the previous radio I was using. The sound quality is very good and the signal reception is excellant. I use it in the basement bathroom and even tucked away in the shower in the basement, it manages to pull in the stations I had trouble receiving with the previous radio. Very nice.

Buy Sangean H201 AM/FM Digital Shower Radio Now

Bought this to replace a Sony shower radio I've had for years. I was amazed at the difference in quality. The sound is superb, it sounds like you have a component hifi in the bathroom. I use it mostly, but not only, to listen to the news, and the voice quality is amazingly clear. The volume can be set very loud with no distortion. One great little feature that is not described well in the listing is that the FM antenna in the back swings around to become a beautiful and very solid semi-circular handle for the radio, so you can carry it around the house very easily. FM reception is outstanding, AM so-so, but that's inevitable and due to my location.

Overall I am satisfied with this purchase and would buy it again. This is the 2nd Sangean radio I've purchased and both have met or exceeded my expectations but they are not cheap. You pretty much get what you pay for.

This radio has a solid feel, nothing flimsy about it and I like the way that the handle rotates down to hide in the back. This radio has good sound for the size, no complaints, but it is not great. This is not a boom box so you are not going to hear it across the backyard but it fills a room nicely. It is great for the bathroom and can be heard over the shower.

I like the digital controls with the station presets. It would be nice to have more than 5 per band but for me that is a minor fault.

The radio has reasonable reception even with the antenna stowed away. When the antenna is extended the reception is very good. Note, the antenna is not the telescoping type but is a wire that is stowed near the battery compartment when not in use. In some ways this is less convenient but on the other hand it is easier to hide the extended antenna. For use in the bath or bedroom I personally like this style antenna better than the telescoping type.

The built in single white LED flashlight is reasonably bright and will come in handy in an emergency or camping. There is also an alarm siren that emits a piercing sound but ... why? Perhaps to annoy the cat.

The radio has a clock, a convenient timer, and an auto off sleep timer but no built in alarm clock. This isn't really a travel radio but for car camping trips I plan on bringing it and an alarm clock would potentially be useful but that is a minor fault.

For me this is a nice portable that is good for Bath, bedroom, kitchen, and listening to ball games in the garage.

Want Sangean H201 AM/FM Digital Shower Radio Discount?

I bought this radio to replace the Sony ICF-S79V. I liked the Sony, but the top skin covering the buttons broke down over time and rendered it inoperable. Previous to wearing out, the Sony was replaced under warranty for an issue with the top skin coming off and causing inoperable buttons as well.

Lest you think this is a review of the Sony, I will now describe the Sangean's strengths and weaknesses relative to the Sony. To wit, the Sangean doesn't sound as good, but it's decent. I am a veteran audiophile and musician and I can live with it happily. It just has a smaller speaker than the Sony and it shows in the overall timbre as being weaker on the bottom end. But then again, I had no illusions of this being anything but a radio for the shower, and what sound is there is pleasant enough. The speaker grille is louvered to protect the speaker element from water coming in a downward direction and this directs the sound downward, as well. For best sound, mount the radio at or above ear level (although I didn't as I wanted my children to be able to reach it).

Reception is almost as good as my GE Superadio III. That's saying alot. There is no suction cup included for the rubber coated flexible wire antenna (as the Sony has), but the Sangean is more forgiving about antenna positioning, so not a huge deal. I can just let it hang and still pick up the weakest Christian radio stations in my mountainous area. Pretty impressive.

The perceived build quality is way better than the Sony, so I feel like the higher price was justified. It just seems like it was built to last.

Other likes:

> the momentary backlighting

> the large numerals on the display

> the mounting plate that allows easy removal

> has enough volume and high frequency detail

to be heard over my blow dryer (barely)

Bottom line: If there's a better shower radio out there, I'd sure like to know about it. Until then, I'll be quite happy with the Sangean.

It is a misnomer to call this a "shower radio" since it serves very well as a table top unit, a camping radio, an emergency radio, a beach radio and an all around great radio product. None-the-less, it works so well in the shower that I have gotten one for every shower in the house.

I have tried four other "shower radios" before finding the Sangean. None of them performed well. Two of them simply died upon getting wet. Not even a very expensive model from The Sharper Image performed as well nor as consistently as this unit.

I live more than 35 miles outside of Washington DC in a very rural and mountainous part of the state. Radio reception here is poor even under the best of circumstances unless you are seeking one of the "big boys" in the city. Even with a high quality receiver there is a lot of bleed over of adjacent station frequencies as well as frequency drift as the day progresses. The station I was after is nearly 40 miles away in an even more rural area. Even with a high end home stereo connected to a large external, directional, FM antenna in the attic this station is difficult to receive consistently.

The Sangean received the station right out of the box albeit very weakly until I unfurled the built-in external antenna. That station now consistently comes in well, rain or shine, winter or summer. Positioning of the external antenna is very critical. This radio's receiver isolates stations very well which is an amazing feat for any portable radio in this class of equipment. This feature is so helpful, that I listen to two stations that use the same frequency. One station is in Virginia while the other is in Wilkes Barre, PA. By simply repositioning the antenna, I can listen to either station without cross talk from the other station.

The battery life of the four D-cell batteries is exceptional. After more than a year on the original unit I purchased, the power indicator has not even dropped 10 percent from a full charge and this radio gets a lot of use every single day.

The supplied mounting hardware attaches the radio very securely to the wall if you wish. The very clever handle also makes it easily hang from the shower curtain rod or towel bar in those situations when you want a temporary, but secure attachment.

It has 5 digital presets for each band (AM/FM) so that you can easily lock in your favorite stations without the miserable and imprecise dial tuning of so many other portable radios. The tuning is rock solid and there is no frequency drift that usually plagues most other radios advertised for shower use.

The sound is very strong and clear even at low volumes. You can also play it loudly enough that even the most demanding "rock your socks off" teenager will be gleefully singing in the shower. If mom and dad don't put the kibosh on the shower concert, that is.

GXV3175 Current status 13th January 2011 -

(Firmware versions Boot:1.0.0.7, Core: 1.0.1.2, Base: 1.0.1.3, DSP: 1.0.4.82, Prog: 1.0.0.28, GUI-A: 1.0.0.7, GUI-B 1.0.0.7, Recovery: 1.0.0.3, Supplement: 1.0.0.27):

Navigation:

The Navigation feels good. New users will get the hang of the "new" navigation easily. The basic idea is that you either

* Point and click

* Point long enough (Options will popup)

* Slide with the finger

* Drag and drop

Applications:

The basic phone functions and some previously existing applications (same as on GXV3140) are working.

Note that all currently existing applications have a new quality (visually and functionally).

That includes of course the phone function itself, the phonebook, 3-way voice or video conferencing etc.,

Whats nice is that it doesn't stop there.

The calculator f.e now offers three interface types: "Simple, Science and Finance" and those work surprisingly exactly the way you would imagine them to do.

Science and Finance mode with all respect, deserve their own documentation to maximize efficiency.

Perhaps one of the lesser known applications is called "Movie Trailer".

Think of it as your personal in-flight entertainment program.

It opens up and shows you the latest cinema film trailers. (The GXV3140 does that too).

Whats new is that now you have also the space to show their stories, background info etc.

Wanna see it ? No problem, click on the "watch now" button and it plays the trailer.

The applications start fast, especially the browser. Internet access feels quick.

Application quality seems to be improved (robust) when compared to the GXV3140.

Applications (f.e Internet radio) can be minimized.

Pressing on the icon will preview the application.

Clicking on the preview will bring it back into the foreground.

Hardware:

The higher spec hardware (double amount of Memory, bigger screen, probably also faster CPU, additional USB port) does seem to be well appreciated by the applications. There is no stuttering anymore (compare to GXV3140) when running Internet radio and screensaver same time.

---

Whats NOT YET in the official release ?

Rumours have it that Skype wont come due to "Skype stopped providing the needed SDK", which sounds like a lame excuse to us.

IM status is unknown.

---

Update: 27th July 2011

Grandstream released today new Firmware 1.0.3.22 which adds new functionality like BLF, Twitter, Facebook, games etc. .

It also impressively increases usability to a new level again. The phone feels much smoother now.

---

Update: 28th Dec 2011

So as of now Skype and IM are still not there yet on the GXV3175.

Also it doesnt look as if development is going on for it anymore.

I can only guess that Grandstream are only doing bugfixes from now on.

If thats the case, than we will probably see a new product coming soon.

In the meantime if you need Skype or IM urgently consider using the GXV3140.

---

Summary:

In terms of user experience the GXV3175 comes included with most of the benefits of its brother, the GXV3140.

Exception IM and Skype.

In addition it offers a different navigation method (touch panel) and more in any aspect we could think of.

* Quality of navigation improved,

* Visual quality more clear,

* more information,

* faster access,

* new voice quality (especially for hands free function),

* High spec hardware

The old standard tip applies also here, always upgrade first to the latest firmware version.

Then enjoy your new phone ;-)

Elgin Travel Alarm Clock

Elgin Travel Alarm ClockI used an Indiglo travel alarm as my main alarm for over ten years. Eventually, it stopped working. I have been on a quest to replace it ever since--about six years now. The main thing I've learned by trying so many other alarms is--it's hard to find a good, basic, no-frills, reliable alarm clock.

Some alarms lose time. Some snooze for 10 or 15 minutes, which defeats the awakening process. Some are loud and/or obnoxious while others are barely audible. One couldn't keep time, AND after it fell off my nightstand--for the first time--the numbers became unreadable. A LOT are not Indiglo, and the backlights are so bright they could double as airstrip lighting; I've had to make them covers to dull the light so I could go to sleep.

I finally gave up finding a suitable replacement at local stores, and started alarm clock shopping online. After comparing features, reading reviews, and checking carefully for 1) battery powered operation 2) no constant backlight and 3) regular old-fashioned only lights up when you push the button (Indiglo), I chose this Elgin travel alarm.

I've used it as my only alarm for several weeks now. It works better than the (many) others I've tried.

Pros

1) no cords (especially good, since it is sold as a travel alarm)

2) audible, obviously an alarm, but the sound isn't TOO grating

3) lightweight

4) the stand covers the button, so if you were traveling instead of using it as a regular alarm (like me) it wouldn't end up draining the batteries by being pressed down the whole time

5) it appears to keep time appropriately (so far, anyway)

6) the numbers are large enough to read without my glasses

7) red locator light is handy

8) low price

Cons

1) it only has a 4 minute "snooze" between alarms

2) required batteries (2 AAA) do not come with it

3) the stand seems flimsy and sticks out pretty far in the back

4) the buttons don't slide smoothly, but they aren't too bad

5) the Indiglo is slightly too bright--it does take a second or two to be able to see the numbers after hitting the snooze button

6) did I mention the 4 minute snooze?

I've dropped it off my nightstand a couple of times. I'm not a morning person, and the four minutes pass quickly--I tend to reach out without looking the first couple of times, and have misjudged its location and pushed it off the stand. So far, it remains intact (the stand hasn't even broken off or cracked yet).

Overall, it's the best replacement I've found during my years of searching. The four minute snooze is REALLY annoying though; the old Indiglo had a 8 (or 7, I don't remember for sure at this point, so many alarms later) minute snooze interval and that was just about perfect. While not a "perfect replacement," it is obvious they don't make what I'm looking for anymore. I will give up the search and use this Elgin. It is adequate, and certainly does its job. It's hard to sleep when the alarm goes off every time you get comfortable from snoozing it the last time. The alarm tone is loud enough to wake you, but not loud enough to make you cling to the ceiling with surprise. The red light helps locate it when it's ringing (although I have to wait a second for the blue light to go down after pushing snooze before I can look at the time).

If it had twice the snooze length (8 minutes), I would give it five stars, since the other flaws are so minor. I might even settle for a six minute snooze. Since it's only four minutes, though, that and all the minor flaws add up to only four stars.

I have dropped this thing on the floor, stepped on it, spilled water all over it. I lost the back and the batteries were held in by masking tape and it still worked. Simple, but effective.

Nice, uncomplicated, functional travel alarm clock. First of all, the package was EASY to open -doesn't require a hacksaw and axe, like most packages do these days. Secondly, the instructions were written in CLEAR ENGLISH -not weird unintelligible international symbols and directions in ten different languages with the English being butchered beyond comprehension. And thirdly, the clock is simple to set up and operate. Very user-friendly. Does what it says it's going to do. Alarm starts off softly then gets more frantic as seconds tick by and you haven't turned it off -perfect for my waking-up habits. It's the right size -very compact -has a nice big display, big snooze button -all in all, about as perfect as a product can be. My compliments to Elgin.

I didn't see this anywhere before I bought this item, but it only snoozes for 4 minutes. It has an annoying alarm that is sure to wake and irritate you and when you press snooze (or turn on the night light) it emits a high pitch whine that is sure to drive away dogs. It has a single alarm that is easy to set. It is small and folds up for travel.

Because of the generally positive reviews and the really low price I decided to take a chance and try one of these. My initial opinion matched those of the best reviews. It is a cheap, simple alarm clock and a great package for travel. The display is large and clear, the controls are intuitive and easy to use, the night light and snooze alarm are easy to access, and the alarm is nice and loud. I was really starting to love it........and then the display pixels started to drop out. The display soon became unreadable.

The clock was just too cheap to bother sending back so I ordered another one. It worked great the first night. When it rang in the morning I hit the snooze alarm and, since then, if the alarm is enabled at all it rings every several minutes. I kept trying it periodically for a couple of days. I even took the batteries out for a while and then replaced them. No change. It is locked into perpetual snooze mode.

I finally gave up and, for an additional $2.50, ordered a Casio. It works just fine.

Amazingly waterproof, although I did not hang it so water sprayed directly on it. Great reception and sound. Held up for three years hanging on a towel bar with some spray and lots of "fog" in the bathroom

The radio speaker is so bad that I can not make out the songs. Also, when you turn on the radio the time disappears. You will be late for everything.

Not worth buying at all!!!

After reading many reviews and listening to the sound of competing and more expensive models at different retailers, the price for this made it worth a try. I am very pleasantly surprised in a number of ways. First, in terms of sound, it is pretty impressive for such a small device. It definitely is not a unit to crank, but that's not the point. On the other hand, it fills our bedroom with reasonable quality sound when played at low to mid volumes. The lows are a little thin, but vocals come though very crisply and the mid-range is totally acceptable. Simply put, it sounds bigger than it is, but it is not a sound system.

Second, the form factor is very appealing. It is a smaller unit than the pictures make it appear which is a plus for the nightstand in my opinion. The clock is dimmable and it is a very mellow orange tone. Consequently, it is totally visible, but does not light the room at night. It is slimmer and very understated in its appearance. My wife commented positively on its appearance, which is a rarity for most electronics.

I have read comments that are negative about the controls, but I see no problems. I actually like the dial control on top. I have some concern about the app for iPhone, but I will defer comment and judgment until I have used it for a while. As with most devices these days, the instructions are weak, so i will play with it on weekends until confident it will work reliably.

The dock options are good, but I have an iPhone case with a dock protector. So, I purchased the blue cel dock extender for $7 (high quality product as well!) rather than take the phone out of its case each night and synch is perfectly fine even with the extender.

The remote is a nice addition, but really it is best for adjusting volume and skipping song to song. Jumping between albums, playlists, etc, needs to be done from the the phone/ipod.

At the $45 +/price point, it is an outstanding value. Sound quality and appearance are very slick for the money. Initial impressions are very good. Solid option for an iPhone alarm clock!

Update: If you do not synch regularly, this clock is not a great time keeper. It adds 2-3 minutes per week if not synched with my phone. Not a big deal, but a little silly in this day and age.

Out of the box, it works great, sounds great, even looks pretty good. However, I started noticing over the course of a couple weeks it runs fast. How does a digital clock run fast? Well, that's a mighty fine question, I wish I knew. But about ever month or so I have to reset the time because it drifts ahead about 5-10 minutes. I can live with that. But now, as a previous review noted, it's started to ignore the alarm times and go off whenever it feels like. This is obviously not acceptable for an alarm clock and is worrying to say the least. Stay away from this model.

OMG, this would have been the best alarm clock if it worked consistently. Unfortunately, the ipod/iphone option suddenly stopped working after about the second week (for apparently no reason). This wasn't a make-it-or-break-it feature, so we just switched to the radio option. This seemed to work well for the next few months, with the exception of one morning when the alarm just didn't go off for seemingly no reason. Wrote that off to human error and kept using for a few more weeks without that happening again. Noticed that the clock kept reading a few minutes ahead of the time on my iphone (wasn't using clock to charge iphone since option to wake up to iphone tracks stopped working), so plugged in iphone and time immediately updatednot a huge deal. Then, this morning alarm failed to turn on for both mine and husband's settings even though everything was set-up correctly (ie: both alarm & time set to am, volume set to medium, no snooze). That was the last straw as I am a very light sleeper and there is no way I missed 2 separate alarms. Only had clock for about 5 months and never abused it, but no longer works. What a waste of money! I should have listened to the negative reviews that were posted before buying. All the features (iphone, dimmer, separate speaker for separate alarms, etc.) along with the reasonable price made this clock seem irresistible, but it's a piece of junk! Too bad the company who makes it didn't do a better job because I think this could've been a best seller if it actually worked:(

I got this item as a Christmas present for my wife. She wanted an alarm clock that would allow her to dim the display. The unit looks great and appears to be well built. The only part she has had some issues with is the ease of use, especially of the downloadable app. She had some problems figuring out how to set it correctly (in the interim, she had a couple mornings in which her alarm didn't go off as expected), and the iPod time seemed to unexplicably go out of synch with the clock time. After a bumpy start, I think she has the hang of it now... at least she's getting awakened every morning at the right time!

I was looking for an alarm clock that would charge my phone without removing my otterbox case. Check. Nice, dark display. Check. Controls...the "scrolly circle" is a little odd, but works okay.

However, I wish the alarm was easier to set, and included "day of the week" choices so i don't have to manually disable each weekend.

NAXA NRC-171 PLL Digital Dual Alarm Clock with AM/FM Radio, Snooze and Large LED Display (Black Lacq

NAXA NRC-171 PLL Digital Dual Alarm Clock with AM/FM Radio, Snooze and Large LED Display
  • PLL digital AM/FM radio tuner
  • 10 AM and 10 FM radio station presets with dual alarm function
  • Large 0.9 inch LED display
  • Wake up to radio or alarm with snooze and sleep function
  • UL/ETL approved AC adaptor

I purchased this specifically for one reason: the digital tuner. The manual tuners just do NOT get good reception and the signal is constantly going out even if the clock hasn't moved, so this one has been perfect. It does exactly what I purchased it for. I haven't used the alarm (it's in our living room, music for the dog really) so I can't comment on that, but the tuner and sound are great!

Save your money & time... this clock/radio sucks!

The first clock/radio purchased would not turn on or allow programming.

Amazon replaced it... second one started working fine, but after several hours when I tried to re-program the preset stations it went crazy.... started flashing and scanning all of the preset stations. After unplugging the power, letting it set for several hours, it would not let me program the time or presets. Sometimes it would let me turn it on but not off.

Returning it to Amazon for refund. Will definitely continue shopping at Amazon.

This dual alarm clock is loud! Just what I was looking for. However, I can't figure out how to turn off the alarm on the weekends! I've read the instructions and it only gives information about turning off the alarm after it sounds. When I was trying to figure out how to turn it off for the weekend, I kept getting the radio. Now I unplug it on Friday nights and reset it Sunday evenings. So, if you want to turn off your alarm to sleep in on the weekends, find another dual alarm clock, unless you figure out how to turn it off. I'm keeping it cause it is loud and is the reason why I gave three stars.

I hate it, very hard to set and the alarm is very very very very quiet even on the top setting. would return if I could find the box.

I bought this clock because it has digital tuning which is what I needed. The functionality is awful and it somehow sets an alarm to go off at midnight every night and it is impossible to reset the alarm so I have to unplug it every day. It was cheap so I guess you get what you pay for.
