I prefer an analog clock-face to a digital display, and this model offers a choice: flip a switch to show numbers, flip it back to show an electronic "hands" display. HOWEVER, even on the dim setting, the backlight is so bright we were able to read by it. *Our neighbors* actually commented on the blue light shining through our bedroom curtains. Since return postage was about half the purchase price, I kept it and use it in the basement to provide illumination for our dogs and cats on their nightly prowls. It's a miss in my opinion.

Overall, it's a nice alarm clock that is small enough for a nightstand and looks nice sitting there. The features are hard to turn down with its modern design and reliable brand name (at least from my experiences on the life of the unit). That is why I chose this clock knowing the risk of some issues some of the others had.

Unfortunately, just like many other complaints (even outside of Amazon), the volume wheel does break. Mine literally broke seconds after opening the box for the first time and just gently making sure all the knobs and such work. But, I'm an impatient person on returns, and considering the cost of the unit, the holiday season mailing times, and just general shipping and time needed, I just fixed it myself in a few minutes. The problem is the little plastic piece that connects the volume wheel to the volume controller. They used a very small and weak plastic tab that extends off the wheel through the volume controller that can't withstand the stresses of twisting. I ended up drilling out some of the volume wheel and super glued in a metal nut, and then a modified version of the little plastic tab they had used, making it nearly unbreakable. Putting the unit back together was a bit of nonsense, but eventually got it all back together and now works fine.

My advice on this purchase: If you're comfortable fixing small little things like this along with remembering how things go back together, or if you are willing to make one or more returns on this thing to get a good one. go for it, you probably wont regret it. Otherwise, I would suggest not taking the risk and just keep looking.

Adding to the chorus; the radio we received also has a free-wheeling volume control wheel. Too bad, it's a cute radio, and I like the feature of being able to read the tuner frequency as you search for a station.
