While the old Toy is rugged, it's not real secure, and didn't want to drop more than 100 bucks on something that might get stolen. This solves the skipping, and the loose front contact problem, because with a SD card tucked inside on the blank face, even if the flip front shakes, the card stays solid. Had to get a short USB extender cable (12" F/M) to get the cable down to the floorboard, since it comes out the back of the unit on a short pigtail. Then i can use another ext (USB M to MIniUSB M)to get to the MP3 i can lay on the seat.
Has almost as good of sound as the old Akai flip front it replaced, and none of the annoying skipping when on the dirt roads in the old Land Cruiser.
The presets are nothing special, and the forwarding of songs is annoying, but the remote is supposed to solve that problem. (have an email in to the seller, to see if he can send one out, since it says that it is supposed to be included) The "skip one" function is next to the volume dial, but the "skip 10" button is the preset 5 and 6 buttons. Anything over that, and you go to another small button, then rotate the volume knob, press the knob, the rotate again. Repeat.
This is necessary because have a 4 Gig SDHC card in there now, with over 40 mp3 and WMA cd's burned onto it.
Don't know if it is working it's way thru the card by WMA or MP3 first, but that seems to throw off the alphanumeric labeling on the title header. Most are in subfolders, but still havn't seen the "folder" name scroll anything yet. The scrolling function of the faceplate is too slow to watch it when you are driving, so have started a cheat sheet of when each album starts.
Will try and figure out the MP3 header convention it is using later.
Decent instructions, you will just have to go thru them about 5 times because of the way they list all the functions for each button, instead of by function (cd vs radio vs SD etc.)
Even with the minor annoyances, this looks like MUCH higher quality than the other el-cheapo competition, and has much better AM/FM signal than i expected, better than the Japan Akai even, and that had a dedicated filter stack. Am only running this on 6x9s and door speakers, and that seems like the most it is cut out for. Serious heat sink in the back, good antenna jack. think it had preamp out too, but wasn't looking for that. Havn't seen the off power drain yet, the old Lanzar used to drain the batt in 2 weeks. Is prob too deep a body for the 2nd gen 4 Runner, but fits fine in the Cruiser.
Overall, a good buy, and LOVE the SD card. Burned the 40 albums from the hard drive on the laptop to the card in less than 20 mins, and a lot of that was selecting the pre-ripped albums. Nice that my gal can pull out her MP3, and listen to her songs without having to keep 'em stored on the card too. This is a great use for those old 1 gig cards too. Set em up as genres, and you can drop in the alt-country card without having to page thru a big 4 gig card.
Will try and drop in a review of the shipper to see if they can help with the remote.
Was Outlet 555 in LA, thru Amazon
Edit 1/20/2011
Outlet answered my emails promptly, and got me out a remote, YEAH !
Still am not sure of file format types, gonna burn a new card, and drop some Vorbis, AAC, etc, and see what happens.
Still very happy with this product.
Buy Supersonic SC-1964UM Mp3/cd Receiver Am/fm Usb Now
Pros:I haven't yet managed to burn it up like a more name-brand player.
Easy setup and programming
Haven't hit a limit with the sdcard option
Cons:
Must press button for clock to show time.
Plastic screen cover had come off... little glue as I didn't want to bother sending it back, warranty claims, etc.
And finally general nitpicking:
The "equalizer" which is more of a line level graphic can be way more useful if it actually showed various frequencies.
The USB option is on the back of the unit on an approx 6 inch cord. not quite enough to get around the player and to a space for anything really.
Words like filename, artist, title, etc, are not needed... if it can't figure out an id3 tag just show the file name that will suffice.
Contrast ratio for screen display could be increased for better readability.
Anybody installing a stereo shouldn't be fazed but the main connector is designed in two peices one for power stuff the other for the speakers and they can be swapped.

I purchased this item in February 2011. At first, it was great. Now I wish I had never bought it. It is too late for me to return it, and it is completely FAILING! It will fluctuate the volume levels on it's own. In other words, I'll be listening to the peice of crap, and then all of a sudden, the volume will go way down by itself until the unit says "MIN VOL". ALSO, the volume knob WILL NOT MOVE AT ALL ANYMORE. It is stuck. The only way to turn the volume up or down is with the remote control, which sucks because it is so small and easy to lose. This stereo WILL NOT PLAY CDs if the temperature of the unit or the CD is less than 70 degrees.Peice of JUNKDo not waste your money when you can get a name brand for the same price. I had to send it back. It wouldn't eject my cd and it was brand new. I sent it back and bought a clarion for the same price. This radio is Utter Junk!
