Before I start I want to point out that as a 50-year-old father of two, I am not the type of guy who goes for bass-heavy systems that go thump, thump, thump, but I do like well balanced a rich sound systems.I bought the iH51 to replace an iP9 that I have been happy with. The reason I bought the new iH51 was because I listen to a lot of music in my bedroom and liked the idea of having two satellite speakers to place on either side of the bed. Also, I assumed that having a subwoofer would provide a deeper, richer and balanced sound. Or so I thought...
Like with my iP9, the design and functionality of the ih51 is really nice. The 6 radio presets, bass and treble adjustment, 3D surround simulation and dual 2-5-7 alarms are great features. However the reason I've rated this unit 2 stars is because despite the fact it has a hefty subwoofer, the bass and depth on this unit is terrible. You would assume that having a subwoofer and two satellite speakers would mean a rich sound, but that is not the case here. As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, I am not a guy who goes for a heavy thumping bass sound, but the only way I could get even a rich balanced bass on this machine was to turn the subwoofer up all the way and to boost the bass level on the base unit to +4. And even with the bass cranked up that high, there is no real depth and clarity to this machine. Without the subwoofer turned up the satellite speakers sound like tinny transistor radio speakers.
I was really looking forward to what the iH51 offered and was sorry I had to pack it up and send it back, but when you're paying $150 for a clock radio with a subwoofer and satellite speakers, you expect a rich sound, and with all that this unit has to offer, that rich sound just wasn't there. I guess I'll just stick with my iP9.

The sound quality for this item is great! It sounds like a stereo with big speakers, but was compact enough for my daughter's dorm room. It also has 2 alarms, which is very helpful.Very nice and highly recommended. Even works with Airport Express. All wires included for easy setup. The one flaw is that as this is "Clock Radio" and that the display is white. It should be red as the white will keep most people awake. I am surprised that such common knowledge is totally unknown or ignored by the manufactures. IHOME ARE YOU LISTENING?? I've had to cover the display with red transparent tape to be able to sleep with it but of course it makes it difficult to read during the day. Too bad, it would have been perfect.
