Emerson CKD 2020 Clock Radio w/ CD Player

Emerson CKD 2020 Clock Radio w/ CD Player
  • Manufactured to the Highest Quality Available.
  • Design is stylish and innovative. Satisfaction Ensured.
  • Great Gift Idea.

I've had Emerson clock radios before. They WORK, they're ACCURATE and RELIABLE, and they're NOT too expensive. In fact, the only reason I replaced the one I bought in 1980 and used for 25 years is that my requirements changed: I wanted to wake up in the morning to a CD. So I bought an RCA/Thompson unit. That was big on looks, not so good on reliability, and gave up the ghost just as so many other reviewers said. I said as much in my review of it.

So I got this. It's a bit plain looking but it's better because it WORKS, and it's not too big. It's functional. It doesn't fail to go off at the time I set it, unlike some. This unit is not a FAIL. The RCA/Thompson is definitely a FAIL. I recycled the RCA/Thompson unit (can't call it a clock) rather than give it away because I didn't want to be the reason some poor person didn't get their wake up call.

After a move, I plugged the Emerson in and it came up with the correct time, due to the battery backup. I had to fix the time anyway, because I'd moved two timezones, but that's not its fault. It has no GPS, after all. If you want GPS time, you'll pay much more.

The only real issue I have with this Emerson is that it can't seem to do random tracks to wake me up. It always uses the first track on the CD. I dinged it one star because of this.

This is just what I hoped it would be, a simple way to wake up or go to sleep to sounds and music from a CD I select. Sound quality is very good for a clock radio. Although I don't use the "beeper", it's also easy on the ears. The display is big and easy to read. I have it on a table quiet close to my head, so I had to get used to the yellow-green brightness of the display -brighter than the smaller red display of my previous clock radio. Programming feature is a nice plus.

Really nice unit. Easy to operate and good compact size. Perfect where real estate is tight like on a night stand. Good value too.

Want Emerson CKD 2020 Clock Radio w/ CD Player Discount?

The clock/radio/cd player is an attractive addition to my desk at work. Easy to set time and use CD player. A few issues I don't like: 1) clock numbers are not bright enough, and I can't find a way to adjust them; 2) there is no tuning indicator for the radio, so you can't see where you're at on the AM or FM bands; 3) there is a display function button, but I have no idea what it's for. That being said, the instructions I received with the radio were photocopied and almost required a magnifying glass to read. I thought they looked like they were cut off at the bottom (i.e., incomplete), so I looked it up on Emerson's website. Unfortunately, the same bad instruction sheet was displayed on there as well.

Overall, an average product, and mostly satisfactory for my purposes as an office accessory.

I really like this cd clock radio. I love the dual alarms. These days it is hard to find a CD clock radio instead there is a plug-in for a MP3 player. This radio also has the plug-in! Good price.

Logitech Squeezebox Boom All-in-One Network Music Player / Wi-Fi Internet Radio

Logitech Squeezebox Boom All-in-One Network Music Player / Wi-Fi Internet Radio
  • Built-in high-fidelity amplifier and speakers for crystal-clear, room-filling sound
  • Mysqueezebox.com provides easy wireless access to thousands of Internet radio stations and music services
  • Compact, all-in-one design with wireless networking for clutter-free audio in any room
  • Included 3.5mm line-in cord works with iPod and other MP3 Players
  • Seven-day alarm wakes you to your favorite Internet radio station or music playlist

I am a radio nut (going back to the tube days)and the Squeezebox Boom is my third internet radio. I have a Roku Soundbridge R1000 and Sangean WFR-20 as well. All have their strengths, but the Squeezebox Boom is without a doubt a significant step up; it sets a new high standard in performance, capabilities, and ease of operation.

For wireless streaming of your music collection from a PC or Mac, the Boom is best. It can handle more formats (nearly anything except DRM protected iTunes files) and works well without crashes or delays. In this the Roku is #2, and the Sangean ranks 3rd(crashes and stutters a lot).

For internet radio, they all work well. The Sangean is the only one that natively handles RealAudio Streams (like BBC) but has problems with clear channel stations. All of them pick up the stations I want without problems, so I rate this a tie.

If you want to interface with online music services like Rhapsody/Pandora/ MP3Locker etc, the Boom works great, with far more capacity than the other two. The Slimdevices/Squeezebox folks also update and improve their software far more frequently than the other two, so I expect it to remain in the lead in features and available services.

In sound quality, the Roku and Boom are both outstanding, with the Sangean good, but clearly a step lower. The Roku's subwoofer seems to go a bit deeper in my room, but the Boom is perhaps a bit more smooth and musical. The Boom uses the same woofers and tweeters as the highly rated Logitech Z-10, but with better bass (because of a larger cabinet and new amp/equalizer circuitry). They both sound absolutely great and play quite loud.

Ease of initial setup: If you are starting from scratch, I think the Sangean is the easiest to set up, if you do NOT want to stream audio from your PC...that is a real hassle. Both the Boom and Roku require a bit more work.

Ease of Use AFTER set up: Boom is best BY FAR. Not only do the menus make real sense, but the illuminated controls make it the only radio you can use easily without turning on the lights. The big control knob and back lit function buttons get you through all of the functions fast.

As a Clock Radio, the Boom has more options than the others, and the display has a huge adjustment range so it will not disturb light sleepers.

All of these radios are a lot of fun. The Boom does most, and does it best.

I was intrigued by the idea of a network media player that had built in speakers etc, but I was completely put off by the size of the player. For those of you that don't know, the Boom is heavily marketed to be a bedside type unit (also kitchen wall/cabinet mounted). While shopping I thought I would prefer something with a little more heft at the cost of better sound, so I pretty well discounted the Boom and was looking at Audioengine and other options for powered speakers.

During my research I ended up coming across the Squeezebox Boom Whitepaper (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/uploads/a/ad/Logitech_Squeezebox_Boom_Audio_Design.pdf) and read through that. It went into a lot of detail regarding the amount of time that Logitech/Slim put into the audio output portion of the box. I also found reviews that in double blind testing the Boom was besting a lot of similar sized boxes that are more expensive and lacked network connectivity. I decided it was worth a shot.

Once I got home and go my Boom all opened up I plugged it in and was up and running in 2-3 minutes (I already have a wifi network setup with a Duet and receivers, so software etc.... had been pre-installed). I started with the Boom in our master bathroom. It was EXCEPTIONAL at filling a pretty large room (about 20x9 with 15' vaulted ceilings) I then played with it in spare bedrooms and the master bedroom. All sounded great.

Even though I usually don't need it I decided to set up some alarms to wake to. I don't leave my squeezecenter on, so I set the boom to wake up to Pandora over squeezenetwork. This took a little bit of fiddling, but once I figured out that you need to add a channel as a favorite it worked perfectly. That night I was a little bothered by the brightness of the screen, so I turned it away from the bed. However, the next morning I awoke to a sweet crescendo of Nelly :)

About the bright screen There is already a bug report/feature request to change the behavior of the auto-dimming. Apparently people complained that it was auto-dimming too dark during beta, so when they changed it they went a little too high, and now it isn't dimming enough in certain situations. The fix is likely to be an adjustable low level that the screen dims to. In the meantime I simply overrode the brightness to a level that is acceptable at night.

Overall I must say I am more than impressed with the Boom, especially for the price. I am already thinking about adding one to the baby's room so that I have a stereo in there I can remotely control from my Duet/PC to play soothing music while still being able to listen to my tunes when I have to wake up with her.

If you are looking for a small network music player that you can move to the various rooms of the house then the Boom is definitely worth looking into...Now, don't expect room filling sound in a 50x50 banquet hall, but for bedrooms etc... it is pretty awesome.

UPDATED: 10/07/2010, and again 03/28/2011

WOW, I didn't realize how popular my original review was. I have been living with the BOOM in my bedroom for the past few years, and still enjoy it EVERY day. My wife uses it to stream Hungarian radio stations set as an alarm in the morning. We listen to Pandora or Last.FM when we fall asleep (on timer). And we use it as external speakers for a 26" bedroom TV. We almost NEVER stream our vast MP3 library off our RAID5 NAS running Squeezebox Server, instead opting to connect to the new mysqueezebox.com management site which is much easier to use. The Boom is a pretty darned good internet radio device, and recommended.

I stand behind MOST of what I originally wrote. I was trying to be unbiased about the feature set as provided TWO years ago and SHORTLY after release. This was right after Logitech bought Squeezebox and started major firmware improvements on the product line. Many of the issues had have since been addressed in firmware. Some were admittedly nits, but I was trying to give a broad perspective to anyone that hasn't actually touched one.

The problems I was having with the BOOM connecting are mostly gone. They resurface briefly on the occasion that I unplug/lose power, but I don't have nearly the headaches I did when I bought it new. Moral of the story... The MSRP hasn't dropped to my "magic" point yet, but the firmware and thus the product, is MUCH, MUCH better now. I would call it a 4 star device in 2011, and thus recommended. I still believe you need a decent technical aptitude to wring every last function out of this device, but if you're looking for a good, easy to operate, self-contained internet radio, and direct ipod connectivity is not a feature you require, you would be hard pressed to beat the Boom.

I would have no hesitation in buying another one if I could get it at half of MSRP. But costing more than an Xbox or PS3, a small HDTV, an Ipod Touch, a netbook, or other "must have" tech items, the Boom won't make the top of many gadget lists. At 100 or 150 it would be much more desirable by a much wider range of consumers and I would happily add a fifth star. Note that Amazon sold it 3/19/11 for 135 after MIR, so they may be prepping a price reduction. It's over two and a half years old without a model refresh and only a 20% price drop. That's not enough movement on a tech OR audio device in my world... No matter how good it is.

-Original Review 12/27/2008

Was looking for a device that I could stream music to my back yard for parties and what not. I found the Boom shortly after it came out and figured it might be what I was looking for. I admit I was waiting for a bit of a price drop however. I managed to get one from AmEx Wishlist at a huge discount (about 50% off internet price) so I bit.

I have some pros and cons to share:

Pros:

1) It plays just about anything you can throw at it including almost all audio file formats, streams, and even RSS feeds. Fairly effortlessly I might add. It also supports Social Media streams if that's your thing.

2) Small and quite portable, even at nearly 8lb. Yet it feels solid and quality built.

3) Can stream internet radio without attaching to a PC.

4) Open Source development. There is a decent community of support for this device and its stable mates. Being open source it just takes one dev to make dreams into reality. (2010 update: running Squeezebox Server on my Linux based NAS!)

5) Built in support for some of the most widely used internet audio sources including iTunes, Rhapsody, Pandora, Last.FM, Live365, Sirius, etc. Unfortunately the vast majority of these are NOT free services, but they do provide 30 day trials or offer free advertising driven content. Any broadcast radio station that streams to the net should be supported for free. I haven't found any that are excluded.

6) Web control is very cool and allows you to fully operate the device from your web browser, even on your internet enabled phone. I like this even better than the included IR remote and it is more functional to boot. It also allows you to sync playback on multiple Squeeze devices around your house, though I have not tried this.

Cons:

1) No battery operation. It would be nice if it had a built in rechargeable battery, even if it only allowed 2 hours of use. (2010 update: I never unplug it, though it's easy to relocate. This is a nitpick)

2) No usb port to attach external storage. Would be amazing to plug in a flash/external HDD drive, mp3 player, and have access to any music on it. (2010 update: still think this would be a good feature in a 2.0 device, wi-fi or not. Nitpicking again)

3) No iPod dock. I am NO Apple fan but we own one iPod Nano and iPods are ubiquitous. Being able to control an iPod directly makes sense. Line in audio is supported via standard headphone jack which converts the Boom into amplified speakers, and is functional (2011 update: We now also use the Boom as external speakers for a 26" Vizio with Internet apps)

4) Price too high. At MSRP I feel that it is probably twice as expensive as it should be. This technology is old enough for a bigger price drop. It probably remains high because there is little competition in this space. If you can find one for under 150 go ahead and add the 5th star.

5) FIXED: Boom REALLY wants to connect to a Squeezebox Server on your PC/Mac. (2010 update: New FIRMWARE fixes most all connectivity problems and allows you to connect directly to mysqueezebox.com OR a Squeezebox Server)

2011 UPDATE: As mentioned the device is great at internet radio, and it is capable of quite a bit more. It is now much more user friendly and no longer requires anything more than a wi-fi router and basic networking knowledge. With a little bit of added tech knowledge you can further maximize potential with plugin apps or by running your own Squeezebox Server.

The Good: The Logitech Squeezebox Boom gives you a portable unit for accessing your digital music library from any room in the house using your wireless network. It has above average sound quality and some nice extras such as a highly configurable alarm clock.

The Bad: Nothing worthy of mention.

Overall: Logitech hit this one out of the park. My detailed usage based review follows.

BACKGROUND: I have been using the Logitech Squeezebox Duet Network Music System (see my review) for over six months so I was already very familiar with the basic functionality of the Squeezebox Boom. While these two systems can work together, the main difference is that the Boom is a standalone system while the Duet requires a separate stereo or speakers.

SETUP: While you may ultimately intend to use your Boom in another room, it is best to perform the setup tasks in the same room with your computer since you will need to go back and forth between the two. Don't worry. All of the information you enter during setup is stored in non-volatile memory so you won't lose any of it when you unplug the unit to move it.

Allow 30 minutes for setup. However, if you already have another Squeezebox product, you can expect a shorter investment of time.

Assembly of the Boom is a breeze. First, you open the remote and remove the protective cover from the battery. Then all that is left is to snap in the plug into the power adapter, connect it to the Boom, and then to your power outlet. Now you are ready for the simple configuration steps.

Logitech continues a trend that they started in other products in giving you a worksheet (only two lines for the Boom) to jot down necessary setup information before getting started. For the Boom this consists of your wireless network information SSID and encryption key (if your network is secured). I was dreading the step of entering this information based on my experience with the Duet, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much more tactile the D-pad on the Boom's remote was over the Duet's controller. After entering this information, the Boom connects to your network and asks you to choose your music source.

At this point, I would recommend that you choose "Squeezenetwork" even if you never intend to use internet radio or online music services. You will be given the PIN for your unit that you must enter into your Squeezenetwork account. After doing so your new unit will become available in the Squeezecenter software on your PC.

About Squeezecenter. You will in all likelihood have to upgrade Squeezecenter if you have a previous unit as the 7.2 version (or higher) is required to work with the Boom. Download and install is about 5 minutes with a high speed connection. Don't worry; the Boom will tell you if you need to upgrade during the setup process.

At this point you should be good to go for accessing both your music library on your computer and the online music services available through Squeezenetwork.

USAGE: The Boom is essentially flawless. I have it located on the first floor while my computer is on the second floor on the opposite end of the house. However the Boom has no problem finding my network and playing an uninterrupted stream of music. The system is very easy to control as it provides menus that let you select from your PC music library by artist, album, etc. Additionally, I have my Pandora (other paid subscriptions such as Rhapsody can also be accessed) account registered at Squeezenetwork, and all of my Pandora stations are available as well. Finally, there is a plethora of internet radio stations giving access to almost any style of music.

While I admit I am not an audio snob, I think that the sound quality from the Boom is above average. There is a good balance of bass and treble, and the volume can be taken as loud as most people would want without being distorted. Logitech didn't skimp on the speakers that they put on the Boom.

New features that are not on the Duet include a programmable alarm clock. I setup three alarms: 1 for Monday-Friday, 1 for Saturday, and 1 for Sunday. These can be specified as repeating or one time. The only complaint (and this is really being picky) I have with the alarm is that they don't offer a true alarm sound. You can use any of your music, but I have always used an alarm even on clock radios. I settled on the "Rooster Crow".

There are tons of settings that you can adjust, and it would take up too much space to cover them all here. I would suggest using the drill-down menus and exploring what is there.

As if you could need more music than what is on your PC, the Boom also includes a jack for audio input. This does close one gap that the Duet had in that you can now access your iTunes music by connecting your iPod. Unfortunately, the DRM music from iTunes cannot be streamed to the Boom (or any other non-Apple product for that matter).

If you have a Duet, it is of interest that the Duet Controller can be used on the Boom by changing the player that it is controlling. The main benefit that you get from this is the display on the Duet Controller is far better than that of the Boom. For example, you can display all of the alarms that you have set on one screen using the Duet Controller, but you cannot do this on the Boom itself.

CONCLUSION: The Logitech Squeezebox Boom is a fantastic product whether you buy it as a standalone unit or as an expansion to the Duet. Think of it as a portable version of the Duet that you can take from room to room in your house with some additional features such as an alarm clock. As with the Duet, this is another no brainer five star item.

This Internet radio is sturdy and does most of the things I want it to do... However, after unplugging it and moving it to another room, it sometimes loses its 'mind' and has to be set up again. I do indeed like the box and what it can do... Only, I can only recommend it to people who are experienced with computer matters. I think a lay person would unlikely be successful setting it up and keeping it in service. While the user-interface is okay for experienced computer people, one must understand something about getting it to connect to your in-house network. If you are someone who needs outside help to set up your computer devices, this is probably not the right technology for you. That said: I receive stations that I know and love from all over the U.S. and the world. If you speak a foreign language, you can easily listen to programs in that language and keep up with the news. Summary: it is a nice Internet radio with many capabilities, but should only be used by people with computer competencies.

I spent a lot of time reviewing other waterproof shower radios, and this one seemed to have a lot of customer satisfaction. I've been using this radio for about 4 weeks now. Such a big improvement of the previous radio I was using. The sound quality is very good and the signal reception is excellant. I use it in the basement bathroom and even tucked away in the shower in the basement, it manages to pull in the stations I had trouble receiving with the previous radio. Very nice.

Bought this to replace a Sony shower radio I've had for years. I was amazed at the difference in quality. The sound is superb, it sounds like you have a component hifi in the bathroom. I use it mostly, but not only, to listen to the news, and the voice quality is amazingly clear. The volume can be set very loud with no distortion. One great little feature that is not described well in the listing is that the FM antenna in the back swings around to become a beautiful and very solid semi-circular handle for the radio, so you can carry it around the house very easily. FM reception is outstanding, AM so-so, but that's inevitable and due to my location.

Overall I am satisfied with this purchase and would buy it again. This is the 2nd Sangean radio I've purchased and both have met or exceeded my expectations but they are not cheap. You pretty much get what you pay for.

This radio has a solid feel, nothing flimsy about it and I like the way that the handle rotates down to hide in the back. This radio has good sound for the size, no complaints, but it is not great. This is not a boom box so you are not going to hear it across the backyard but it fills a room nicely. It is great for the bathroom and can be heard over the shower.

I like the digital controls with the station presets. It would be nice to have more than 5 per band but for me that is a minor fault.

The radio has reasonable reception even with the antenna stowed away. When the antenna is extended the reception is very good. Note, the antenna is not the telescoping type but is a wire that is stowed near the battery compartment when not in use. In some ways this is less convenient but on the other hand it is easier to hide the extended antenna. For use in the bath or bedroom I personally like this style antenna better than the telescoping type.

The built in single white LED flashlight is reasonably bright and will come in handy in an emergency or camping. There is also an alarm siren that emits a piercing sound but ... why? Perhaps to annoy the cat.

The radio has a clock, a convenient timer, and an auto off sleep timer but no built in alarm clock. This isn't really a travel radio but for car camping trips I plan on bringing it and an alarm clock would potentially be useful but that is a minor fault.

For me this is a nice portable that is good for Bath, bedroom, kitchen, and listening to ball games in the garage.

Want Sangean H201 AM/FM Digital Shower Radio Discount?

I bought this radio to replace the Sony ICF-S79V. I liked the Sony, but the top skin covering the buttons broke down over time and rendered it inoperable. Previous to wearing out, the Sony was replaced under warranty for an issue with the top skin coming off and causing inoperable buttons as well.

Lest you think this is a review of the Sony, I will now describe the Sangean's strengths and weaknesses relative to the Sony. To wit, the Sangean doesn't sound as good, but it's decent. I am a veteran audiophile and musician and I can live with it happily. It just has a smaller speaker than the Sony and it shows in the overall timbre as being weaker on the bottom end. But then again, I had no illusions of this being anything but a radio for the shower, and what sound is there is pleasant enough. The speaker grille is louvered to protect the speaker element from water coming in a downward direction and this directs the sound downward, as well. For best sound, mount the radio at or above ear level (although I didn't as I wanted my children to be able to reach it).

Reception is almost as good as my GE Superadio III. That's saying alot. There is no suction cup included for the rubber coated flexible wire antenna (as the Sony has), but the Sangean is more forgiving about antenna positioning, so not a huge deal. I can just let it hang and still pick up the weakest Christian radio stations in my mountainous area. Pretty impressive.

The perceived build quality is way better than the Sony, so I feel like the higher price was justified. It just seems like it was built to last.

Other likes:

> the momentary backlighting

> the large numerals on the display

> the mounting plate that allows easy removal

> has enough volume and high frequency detail

to be heard over my blow dryer (barely)

Bottom line: If there's a better shower radio out there, I'd sure like to know about it. Until then, I'll be quite happy with the Sangean.

It is a misnomer to call this a "shower radio" since it serves very well as a table top unit, a camping radio, an emergency radio, a beach radio and an all around great radio product. None-the-less, it works so well in the shower that I have gotten one for every shower in the house.

I have tried four other "shower radios" before finding the Sangean. None of them performed well. Two of them simply died upon getting wet. Not even a very expensive model from The Sharper Image performed as well nor as consistently as this unit.

I live more than 35 miles outside of Washington DC in a very rural and mountainous part of the state. Radio reception here is poor even under the best of circumstances unless you are seeking one of the "big boys" in the city. Even with a high quality receiver there is a lot of bleed over of adjacent station frequencies as well as frequency drift as the day progresses. The station I was after is nearly 40 miles away in an even more rural area. Even with a high end home stereo connected to a large external, directional, FM antenna in the attic this station is difficult to receive consistently.

The Sangean received the station right out of the box albeit very weakly until I unfurled the built-in external antenna. That station now consistently comes in well, rain or shine, winter or summer. Positioning of the external antenna is very critical. This radio's receiver isolates stations very well which is an amazing feat for any portable radio in this class of equipment. This feature is so helpful, that I listen to two stations that use the same frequency. One station is in Virginia while the other is in Wilkes Barre, PA. By simply repositioning the antenna, I can listen to either station without cross talk from the other station.

The battery life of the four D-cell batteries is exceptional. After more than a year on the original unit I purchased, the power indicator has not even dropped 10 percent from a full charge and this radio gets a lot of use every single day.

The supplied mounting hardware attaches the radio very securely to the wall if you wish. The very clever handle also makes it easily hang from the shower curtain rod or towel bar in those situations when you want a temporary, but secure attachment.

It has 5 digital presets for each band (AM/FM) so that you can easily lock in your favorite stations without the miserable and imprecise dial tuning of so many other portable radios. The tuning is rock solid and there is no frequency drift that usually plagues most other radios advertised for shower use.

The sound is very strong and clear even at low volumes. You can also play it loudly enough that even the most demanding "rock your socks off" teenager will be gleefully singing in the shower. If mom and dad don't put the kibosh on the shower concert, that is.

  • Wakeup Lighting (30min, 10min, 0min. prior to alarm time)
  • Large Digital Clock with 3-step Dimmer

As an ipod dock/clock this is a great product. It looks nice on my bedside table and produces decent sound. The lamp feature, however, is pretty worthless. Even on the brightest setting, it barely illuminates anything. You definitely can't use it to read or do anything other than see things in a one foot radius.

We use a separate clock on my night stand to set our alarm clock and only use this one to project the time on the ceiling.

Barbie Clock Radio - Authentic Replica of Barbie's Original 1962 Convertible

Barbie Clock Radio - Authentic Replica of Barbie's Original 1962 ConvertibleI had this clock through high school, just got it back from my mother and I still love it. It should be noted that this isn't actually a toy, and I personally wouldn't give it to a toddler or any kid under 10 but it's still fairly durable. 5 moves later it's still in excellent shape, not a single part missing and we lost the box long ago. It's not mentioned in the description but my favorite thing about this clock was always that the hood is the snooze button. There's a peg under the hood that presses the snooze when you hit the hood.

This product is ok. It is definitely loud and wakes my son up. Sounds like a smoke detector alarm. My only dislike is that its more like and egg-timer and you set it for countdown. It doesn't have a current time display so its not like an alarm clock you can set. You need to calculate how many hours in the future you need to wake up (somewhat of a pain). It also needs to be set everyday. It's not the kind of item you can set once and it will keep waking you at the same time. Would not recommend.

I see this in my husband's hand in the morning, as he stands several yards from the bed...He pushes some buttons and like action-packed movie he throws it as if it were a grenade onto the bed before bolting (hands over his ears)...Then I can't cover my ears whilst turning it off...no it takes both hands! It is seriously the best thing for those of you who can't wake up because you're a very deep sleeper...It is a frightening product! Yes, it really works...notice how I am usually awake when my husband actually uses it, screaming NO! It is set on low volume...I'm not ready to know what the loudest setting sounds like!

The Screaming Meanie is by far the loudest alarm I have ever heard. I purchased it for my elderly mother who is hearing-impaired and could not hear her medication reminder alarm. She is able to hear the Screaming Meanie on the low setting. The high (loudest) setting could be heard from a distant position in a large house and through walls in an apartment building. On the high setting, it would make a perfect personal panic alarm, since that requires one button to activate, and even outdoors, this sound would surely carry some distance. I have not given it 5 stars because the ease of use and functions could be better. It requires two hands and 3 buttons held at once to shut off the alarm, and you cannot program in a frequently used time interval. That does not detract from its usefulness if the primary criteria is loud volume. It appears sturdy and well made. Also, the directions are very clear and set up like a quick-reference. Good purchase for the money.

This alarm is amazing, and actaully wakes me up. I have tried many alarm clocks, but I simply sleep through them. This thing will raise the dead, and wake up your neighbors.Great!

Archos 35 Home Connect 4GB

Archos 35 Home Connect 4GB
  • The web radio evolves with Android thanks to the ARCHOS Home Connect and its 3.5 inch touchscreen
  • The ARCHOS Home Connect includes two built in high definition speakers in specially designed cases for improved bass
  • As the ARCHOS Home Connect is light and has an extra-long battery-life you can take the great sound with you around the home and beyond.

I fell in love with the concept of this device when I stumbled on it @ Archos' website. Unfortunately, the execution fell short, primarily in how much Archos skimped on quality of the touchscreen. If any device ever cried out for OLED (a screen technology where light is emitted by each individual pixel rather than one big back light), this would be it. In its night mode where it shows the time in white with the rest of the display black, this low-contrast backlit display still lights up a dark room enough that my wife complained about sleep quality on night 2. The display's touch response is abysmal as well for anything beyond tapping simple scrolling gestures through my music are often misinterpreted, and the display is so small that only three or four items are displayed in many lists, making it difficult to find your place again when it scrolls too much.

On the plus side, the speakers were better than I would have expected from a device of this size & weight.

If Archos thinks they needed to hit a certain price point to make an alarm clock viable, fine, but they should offer a more expensive model that's the same, just with a higher-res and more touch-responsive OLED. I still like the concept enough that I'd take them up on it.

Boy this is a tough review to write. As an alarm clock, the Archos

1) Does everything you need to make a perfect alarm clock

2) Does them all poorly.

Where do I start? I guess with the screen, the resistive screen works OK to push buttons, but scrolling, which is a breeze on any cellphone, is an exercise in frustration here, sometimes it scrolls, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it thinks you want to push a button.

The other major annoyance is the clock. The dimmer is too bright, so you have to point the clock at the wall otherwise it shines in you eyes. The other thing is the clock has a timeout you cannot switch off, so instead of the nice clock you can see in some screenshots, you get a dull green clock that bounces around the screen. Also, the clock is not the main screen, it's an application, so you are constantly going back to the main screen then pushing the clock application button.

The clock comes preset with appslib as the default android market. This pales in comparison to the Google market, you cannot browse for apps on you computer, and browsing on the clock is frustrating, so you end up browsing the Google market then searching on AppsLib once you have found the app you like. The Archos is compatible with the fewest apps I have ever seen, about 70% pf the apps are not compatible.

Now for some good news. The radio is fantastic, and the music app is very good. Also, and the most satisfying thing is, if you do not like the way something works, you can find a new app and substitute that. I customized my Archos as follows:

Replaced the clock app with Alarm Clock Plus. Its the same app as installed, but the market version has more options, including the option to turn off the screensaver. Added Google voice so I can listen to podcasts. Added Mortplayer so I can listen to audiobooks. Added Arctools to get the Google Market. Added Shuttle FTP server so I can transfer files between my computer and the Archos over the WiFi.

So now I have an alarm clock that is designed the way I want it, with functions I need. Thats the good news. Does that negate the poor screen navigation, lack of apps compatibility, and the too bright screen? Not sure, I have decided to keep the Archos, but as soon as someone else come out with a better android alarm clock, I'm first in line to buy it.

I had been waiting for the release of this for a while because I thought that it would make a good internet radio and alarm clock.

First impressions are good. Immediately on unpacking and turning it on, it found my wifi network (but it, as so many other wifi gadgets only works on basic configuration routers-no 5Ghz here). It then performed a firmware upgrade.

After that, it was a case of entering in email details and logins, and it was good to go.

It has Tunein Pro-a bonus, as I was only expecting the basic version. Sound volume is good, and the quality not bad at all.

The alarm clock works fine, with lots of options.

It's rechargeable, but the battery only seems to last about 4 hours. Maybe it will improve with use. The manual warns against leaving the usb charger plugged in, but I'm going to ignore that. Having to plug and unplug it all the time when it's sitting on the bedside table being an alarm clock would be a bit of a pita.

All in all, I'm glad that I bought it.

I love this thing. The speakers sound great and the actions are responsive. Just a few problems resistive (physical pressure based) screen and the action buttons don't light up. So if you are a gadget snob, don't buy this. It isnt a modern miracle piece of technology. But if you want a great little android stereo then you'll be pleased like me.

I have to admit there are a few minor nuisances, as with any Android device and any touchscreen device, but overall, it is about the most brilliant "clock radio" I have ever seen.

My two biggest complaints are that the little icons for home, back arrow, settings, etc., should be illuminated if possible, and I don't really like the way the USB power cord plugs into the rear; it can make the radio a little unstable. But these are minor.

Perfect size and remarkably good sound for that size. The ability to load my own music, listen to TuneIn Radio Pro, including local stations, is just what I wanted.

I can go to sleep listening to the radio or music of my choice

I can glance at the clock and see the time and temperature.

And of course it is an alarm clock.

It has a variety of apps preloaded and available, much like any Android phone does. For the most part I don't see the need to play angry birds on a clock radio or use it as an internet browser or calculator, but I suppose these could be nice options for some.

GPX CC312B AM/FM Clock Radio with Dual Alarms and Top Load CD Player - Black

GPX CC312B AM/FM Clock Radio with Dual Alarms and Top Load CD Player - Black
  • Clock radio with CD player and AM/FM radio
  • Gradually wake to one of the dual alarms or your favorite radio station
  • 1.2" red LED display with dimmer control
  • 3.5mm audio line input for connecting MP3 players (players sold separately)
  • AC power cable built in, but also runs on 9V battery backup (battery not included)

This device has a few features I like, and a few I don't. Here's the list.

Like:

1. Large numbers

2. battery backup

3. two alarms

4. USB charger for cell phone/kindle, etc

Don't like:

1. Volume increase on radio/cd wakeup too quick and too loud

2. Snooze button is only for 1 minute (tho you can hit it several times at once)

3. Radio is difficult to tune (analog, and the dial moves the pointer too fast)

The "Like" list met my requirements (first three items, 4th was a bonus). This was the only model I could find that had the 3 I needed. If your list is like mine, go ahead and get it. If not, you'll probably be happier elsewhere.

Looks good. Fewer buttons than most. But there is always a catch. Ah, if it only worked as described. The instructions (obviously translated from Chinese to English) are missing steps and therefore you cannot complete some functions. You go as far as you can with the instructions then you're on your own. Try this, try that, find what combinations work and then hope you remember the sequence that worked. It's maddening. When you're lucky enough to set the alarm to the radio, you cannot set the volume so when the alarm time is reached, the radio or CD or buzzer turns on and quickly and automatically increases the volume to wall shattering levels. Speaker quality is not good. And, oh yes, this bit of info: There are two models of this, both showing the same model number, however, one model has an output plug-in, radio tuning wheel and AM/FM switch on the left (it's left). The other has the output plug-in and USB port on its left side. No tuner or selection switch. Other buttons perform those tasks. To learn about the warranty you must go to a website provided in the Owners Guide. If it had a correct guide for setup and better speaker sound this would be okay for the price. If you can figure out the setups it's worth keeping. The jury is still out on how long it will last. I have had mine for just ten days. If you have my model (USB port on lefthand side) do this in setting the alarm: Follow steps 1 through 7 under "setting alarm", after choosing your choice of wakeup PRESS THE AL1 BUTTON. In step seven is states to "use the VOL +/to adjust alarm (NO, this won't work and screws up the original setup). The fact that the wakeup volumn automatically increases to an awful level and therefore makes waking up unpleasant, this unit is being returned. Shame because that one auto volumn feature makes makes the alarm way too stressfull.

Good CD clock radio. Has a 3.5mm audio line input for connecting MP3 players and has an AC power cable built in, but also runs on 9V battery backup. The sound may not be amazing as if coming from a nice top of the line stereo, but I have played many CDs in it and I can't complain.

Our clock CD Player in our two year old sons room died on us. It was a Sony upright with sea sounds and all that jazz it lasted probably 5+ years but probably couldn't handle the constant CD usage of a 0+ child's needs. So I researched not wanting to spend much more than $30 bucks on a replacement since mp3s are more popular but we have so many infant/child CDs we just need that and we HAVE to have a clock in the kids room. So we checked out the Lego but so many mixed reviews for a $40 + clock I was hesitant. I am glad we went with this player it is simple but durable and the CD player works great with the sleep timer and large clock makes it easy to see at 2am that Mr man needs to go back to bed. It also has a USB and MP3 port on the side if you want to plug in AUX like iPod or what not. I will definitely recommend and hope the CD player holds out another 5 years at least. I can follow up if something goes terribly wrong in the upcoming months though.
