The iPod/iPhone sits pretty high up. The dock is not recessed, and the unit is very light weight, so I have placed it on a shelf that is somewhat protected from my knocking it to the floor if and when I fumble for it to shut it off. It really does not seem very sturdy, and I question how long it will last, but, so far, it's working great.
The sound is nice and clear, and the fm radio reception is excellent. Much better than the other clock radio I have in my room. The charging connector for the my iPhone fits nicely and works well. I gave it four of five stars, because it works well, but feels kind of cheap, even at this price level. The price is great, and there are some good features here. First, the dock has a small footprint, useful in a clock radio. The sound quality is decent, for a clock radio. The numeric display is easy to read, and offers a choice of two brightness settings. The FM radio reception is good. Appearance is not bad. If this thing were designed by someone with a brain, it would be a bargain!
Unboxing this dock, the first thing I notice is the power cord and the external antenna cord. They emerge from the very top of the dock! Why aren't these wires located near the bottom of the dock, like every other electrical appliance I own?
Using the various push buttons on the dock is an exercise in frustration. I can accept that setting the time, FM radio presets, and so forth is difficult. Most clock radios suffer from this defect. These are not operations that one performs every day, so no big deal. But with this dock, even cycling through the radio presets is unpleasant. The printed documentation is not entirely correct, so learning how to use these features requires real work on your part.
If you experience a power failure for even five seconds, all your settings are lost. You have to go through the unpleasantness of setting your alarms and radio presets all over again. If the power failure occurs while you are sleeping, you won't get your wake up call either.
The volume adjustment for normal listening is fine. It offers steps from 0 to 30, meaning silent to extremely loud. However, setting the volume for the wake-to-music feature is a separate setting. This setting only offers settings between 10 and 30. Why did they do this? And guess what, that "10" is unpleasantly loud to wake up to.
That loud wake up call can go on, too. I mean, if you go on vacation and forget to turn off the alarm on this dock, it will play music 24/7.
The final design error is a bit abstract. Apple customers are distinguished by their willingness to pay up for great products. What kind of genius would market his shoddy-but-cheap gadget to this population? This audio device is more like ipod external speakers with a clock. The quality is not the best, the radio comes in fuzzy sometimes and clear at other times. It will be good when I'm outside by the pool. When I got it, I began to set the clock, but decided not to.... to my surprise as soon as I plugged in my ipod the time was set a big bonus. Bottom line: great as an extra set of speakers for your ipod; not so great as your only external media source for your music device.I have two ipod alarm clocks and this is my favorite by far. The reason why I like this better is the ease of use. You plug it in, plug your ipod in and the time adjusts immediately to your ipod. The other clock we have does not have this feature and you have to adjust the time manually. Not very convenient in my opinion. It's nice to be able to move the alarm clock around the house and not have to adjust the time each time. The sound quality is ok, but for a small clock and speakers, it's works fine for short periods of time. The red digital display is just right and is easy on the eyes in the middle of the night. I like it and will go to this one time and time again. This does NOT charge the iPhone 4 too bad that's the main reason I chose to buy it. But I do love the time reset from phone feature.
