Although it doesn't say it in the listing or the radio / alarm clock's manual you cannot charge a newer version of the iphone or ipod. Apparently they use 5 volt usb charging power and this radio is set up for the old ipod's 12v firewire connection charging. You can buy a Firewire charge converter which will cost you more money and render the docking ability useless, due to the connection being too long to just be supported by the connector. This radio equal a waste of money for me.

I love it!! $59.99 at HH Gregg. The only drawback is no remote control. It's a basic portable clock radio ipod dock. Good sound out of small speakers. No speaker adjustment that I could find, so I think with the Ipod you do that with the ipod's internal equalizer settings. This would not be suitable if you are looking for a high powered dock. But I think it is superior for its size and functionality.

Very lightweight-under a pound. Very easy to move and carry around or put into suitcase.

I bought it to use on my kitchen counter so I can listen to ipod music or podcasts while cooking and washing dishes. On my counter I already have a $500 Polkaudio CD/HD radio. It's got incredible sound but in its current place on the kitchen counter, only a couple of radio stations come in. The little JVC picks up every station that I want to listen to..which are not the strongest ones because they are on the left end of the fm dial, and mostly public radio or local college stations.

Although the POlkaudio has an input to hook up an ipod with a cord, I could never get it to work, with either the single pole cord or the one with the 2 rca screw in ends. So, one of the reasons I'm so happy with this besides the quality of the sound and the good design is that it is small enough to add to the counter next to the Polkaudio without crowding the counter.

It does not come with ipod dock adapters so you must buy them separately.

I have two of these. I really like this product because it doesn't take up to much space. The sound sounds good enough for me. Compactabilty fits in my purse/backback and runs either on power cable or batteries. One downside is you don't get AM radio. I use one at my cabin and can set it in the window sill. So I would recommend this to everyone. Plus features batteries or outlet, size, alarm, FM, IPod. It will also charge your Ipod when using outlet plug. Downside is no AM radio and with batteries it doesn't charge your IPod.

The weather radio feature is really nice if you're interested in it... one touch of a button activates it and supersedes the regular radio. I actually ordered this from the iHome website, but regardless I decided to write a review since there aren't many on this, seeing as it's fairly new and I know some are wondering about the quality and if it is indeed worth purchasing or not.

First off let me say that I love the look of the product, the retro boombox style looks great. The rubberized coating makes the surface smooth and gives it a nice matte tone. It's lightweight, and you have the option of using an AC adapter or batteries (6 D I believe, so you can carry it aroundit is a boombox, after all). It comes with a remote (battery included), an arm strap for carrying, AC adapter, FM antenna, the unit itself and instructions/warranty information. The iHome itself has a handlebar on it in case you don't want to use the strap.

The unit itself has a volume knob, tuning knob for FM radio, on/off button, mode button, play/pause button, SRS audio enhancement button, and 5 graphic equalizer buttons. On the back there's the AC adaptor jack, remote button (disables remote when operating on your batteries if you wish), and a line-in for the included FM antenna or you can hook up another audio device with a standard 3.5mm jack.

Now for the soundI've owned two iHomes before but none have compared to the amazing sound this has WITH the enhancer on. According to the one review I found online, it's iHome's best sounding system yet. I'm not sure about that, but I'm very pleased with the sound. The SRS TrueBass makes all the difference, I always keep it on lol. Basically it enhances the audio, and the equalizer buttons at the top let you adjust for your optimum sound. Without the SRS on, it has mediocre sound and I'm not sure why you would need to turn it off, it's nice that they give you the option however.

I was also a little hesitant in buying because it doesn't have a clock display, and there wasn't any app enhanced sign on the product on iHome's website, and I was worried that it wouldn't let me set alarms. However it's all in the appif you download the iHome app from the app store, you can easily display the clock on your iPod/iPhone while it's docking in the iP4, set alarms, sleep times, wake times, reminders, etc. etc.

Basically it has everything I wanted and I'm very pleased! If you like the look of the iP4 and are in need of a new or your first iHome I highly reccomend this one. Very unique and cool :)

I don't normally buy things for the looks, but the design of this boombox hooked me the first time I saw it. Eagerly awaited it's arrival in the mail. My plan was to replace an old stereo in my room for private listening, with a line-in to my iPad stand. I was also sold on the idea of tossing some D's in there and jamming outside. On my bookshelf, the thing looks like a work of art.

Unfortunately...the sound is not anything to write home about. Granted, this is a boombox, not a full-fledged stereo. It's not meant to stand toe to toe with the Cambridge Soundworks I have hooked up to my PC. But the sound that came out of this thing just sounded cheap and hollow, like the mid range had no substance, and the bass had no oomph. I would have been okay with it if the thing had sounded close to or the same as my 10 year old stereo, but it couldn't even manage that. Despite finangling with the equalizer and keeping SRS turned on, I just could not coax a listening experience out of this thing that I felt happy with. At the end of the day, I want to listen to something that sounds good, not just looks good. Thus, I returned it.

It could be that I just had too high expectations for a boombox, but I don't really NEED anything that portable...it was just a nice option to have. Sound quality, in my mind, is still the most important thing.

For reference, these are the sorts of sound systems I'm used to and therefore end up getting compared to: a set of 2.1 Cambridge Soundworks PC speakers, a pair of Koss Portapro headphones, and an old Phillips 2 speaker stereo (which I am going to continue to use since it sounds better than the iHome).

I never EVER buy anything impulsively but man when I first ran into that pink boombox at the store, I had to touch it, and once I felt its unusual rubbery texture, I had to ask for an audition.

I docked my iphone in, turned it on and the EQ LEDs started dancing. WOWWWWW! I was not expecting such a good sound from such a hot looking little thing, well, especially for under 200 bucks!!! Let's be honest here, don't expect "audiophile sound" by any mean but as an iphone dock? It really sounds awesome! Add a little remote , an AC adapter and the option to use batteries... Yeap, I simply love it . The only setback is I'm now afraid my girlfriend will steal it from me (she's been drooling over it the entire evening)

I ordered the Altec Lansing Mix boombox for two hundred bucks and I enjoyed its sound and features. However, I had to return it because it was having battery issues that many others had the same issue. It kept on shutting itself off. I decided to try this iHome boombox and I am happy with it. I paid like 35% off the retail manufacture price. I use it mainly as a portable boombox for the tennis court. For about a 60' and 120' outside area, it is plenty loud enough. I pretty much keep it in the 27-32 volume range when it goes up to 40. I never went pass 35 on the volume because I never had to. With my altec lansing mix, I had the volume in the same area as well which was surprising to em even though the Altec Lansing puts out more watts. Here are my pros and cons for the ihome boombox:

Pros:

1. Sounds great! It does a solid job with the lows, mids and highs. It is very close in sound quality to the Altec Lansing Mix but the Altec Lansing Mix sounds better because it has the better bass. The iHome boombox is still a great sounding boombox. And as I said before, it really does get loud. No you won't have enough watts pumping out for a huge backyard party. Look at the size of the boombox and it only runs on 6-D batteries so that should give you an idea of its watts power. The iHome boombox runs on 15 watts of power but it is very similar in loudness to the 60 watt Altec Lansing Mix. The Altec Lansing Mix is using their watts to power their bass which you can see the subwoofer moving. It is probably why it has trouble with the batteries because the sub drains them too much. The iHome boombox has good bass with the SRS trubass but don't expect it to be pumping the same bass as the higher priced and higher watt boomboxes.

2. Very stylish retro/modern look! It has the old school look but it also looks modern with the rubberized feel, bright equalizer and design. When I first felt the rubberize grip, I thought it would wear or show markings but it actually holds up really well to wear and tear.

3. FM radio reception is a key feature for me and the radio sounds clear.

4. Remote works well and it is magnetized to fit nicely on top. The remote has never fell out of its slot. Awesome little magnet feature there.

5. Great value... I wouldn't spend $200 on this boombox but you can find it much less. It is much cheaper than some of the crazy expensive boomboxes like dre boombox and tdk boombox that is like 3 times more than the iHome boombox. JVC boombox and Altec Lansing is also lot more than this iHome boombox. Even though the iHome boombox doesn't pump out as many watts as the other very expensive competitors, it still sounds great. Are the other expensive boomboxes worth up to 3 times more? That is your choice but I don't think so even if they sound slightly better.

6. Battery powered! Not just battery powered but it runs on only 6-D batteries and I am already approaching like 35 hours on the same set of batteries and they are still working great. I would have been happy if I reached 25-30 hours. And D batteries aren't expensive when you buy them on sale.. With those really expensive boomboxes that run on batteries, they are getting more around 8-15 hours if lucky and running on 8-12 D batteries.

7. Portable... This is very easy to carry around because it is only 17"x9"x5", comes with shoulder strap and only weighs 7.5 pounds. My altec lansing mix was portable but this is much easier. Some of these other boomboxes reach around 30" long and some even weigh close to 40 pounds with their batteries. This iHome can be carried around much easier than the others.

8. 5 band graphic equalizer... If you know how to use it, you can tailor your music just the way you want.

Cons:

1. FM antenna... It has a built in antenna but to get great reception, you need to use the wire antenna. I said the FM sounds great earlier but the antenna is a wire antenna that is plugged in the back. I kind of preferred a regular telescope antenna and don't know why they didn't add it. To get the best reception, the wire antenna should be straightened out and pointing upwards in a certain direction. I put a piece of transparent shipping tape on the shoulder strap. When I listen to the radio, I simply take off the piece of tape from the shoulder strap and tape the straightened out antenna wire to a post. Put the tape back on strap when I am done with fm radio. Problem solved and I got great reception. I would have returned the boombox if I didn't discover this method. I order a 3.5mm antenna for like 2 bucks but the antenna is only like 10 inches and doesn't improve the reception at all.

2. No presets... There should have been like 6 radio presets on the remote.

I would give this boombox an 8.5 out of 10. It isn't perfect as it has some flaws but it does sound great (ipod or fm), looks awesome and has some nice features so I am keeping my boombox and I would recommend it to others. It is also much cheaper than some of the crazy expensive boomboxes like dre boombox and tdk boombox that is like 3 times more than the iHome boombox.

This is a great boombox! I didn't buy it for a home theater system so it is not that quality of music. But for the pool and camping the big speakers work very well (and loud too!). We looked at a lot of units and this one has the best sound for a portable unit that will work on batteries. Couldn't figure out how to adjust the display brightness as it was not in the manual. Their tech support responded to my email promptly and told me that tuning knob will adjust when in iPod mode. Initially, I couldn't get left channel only when using my iPhone 4s, but it turned out to be the phone. My wife's iPhone 4s worked fine. I love this unit.

Sony ICF-CD831 PSYC Clock Radio/CD Player (Red)

The radio is nice with good quality sound.

My only complaints are the lack of station presets and the lack of ramp-up when the radio turns on. The volume hits you with full force when the alarm goes off, rather than a gentle rise. Same goes for the Nap timer the buzzer is loud and will jangle you awake.

I didn't realize that I'd miss presets, but I do. It's a pain to try and find a favorite station.

I am planning to return this radio and find a more gentle model.

I bought one of these for my daughter's Christmas present last year. She uses the CD player for the alarm, and very rarely to play music in her room. After less than 12 months of gentle use, the CD player only works intermittently.

I checked the warranty information after the fact, and SONY only warranties for 90 days, parts up to 6 months. After the 6-month period, you pay for labor to service the product. It's a waste of money, because the labor cost will certainly be more expensive than buying a new radio.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

I mainly bought this CD/Radio alarm clock simply because I wanted a small boombox cd player. I was very surprised by the excellent sound quality of the cd player and the excellent sound quality of the radio. It sounds ten times better than the regular alarm clock radio I have, so now every morning I wake up to a very clear sounding radio. The best part is, the sound of the cd player and radio has the ability to fill a whole room just as good as any other regular boombox. I'm very impressed!

The only things I wish the cd player had is an ability to repeat one song over and over.

However, I was surprised by the fact that this cd player has the ability to turn on the cd player to the track you want when you want to wake up. I've never had a cd/radio alarm clock like this before.

Clack-clack-clack! That's the sound you'll hear too often when you put a CD in this player. The CD itself seems to sit on the turntable fine, but the part of the lid that rests on the CD is loose and often misaligns. So when you lower the lid and spin up the CD, it clatters. That can't be good for the CD or the player. Each time you open and close the player, that component moves. No matter how carefully you place the CD in; no matter how carefully you close the lid, you are prone to this problem. You don't want to damage your CDs, and the noise spoils the music. So you have to be careful with it, or exchange it, or buy a different product.

Otherwise, it's a pretty nice product. The clock-radio portion is fine. The CD player, when it works right, is OK. The layout of the controls is no better and no worse than others of its kind. (Why is it no two digital products ever have the same layout?) My only other complaints would be the antenna wire that dangles from the back and ought to be eliminated entirely, and the marketing gimmick of the goofy little logo tag on the right side.

The critical thing to me is the clattering lid on the CD player. I didn't expect that from a Sony product. The other things I've mentioned are minor flaws. It's clear they put some thought into the design, they just should've done a little better.

In summary, buy a different model or buy from another maker. Don't put up with clattering in your CD player.

I purchased this Sony Psyc for our baby's room to replace a boom box we used to play music at night. Our oldest took the boom box to college! The sound is good and it serves the purpose I purchased it for--playing a cd and having the ability to "repeat". It doesn't take up much room (although there are smaller ones out there), and it has a sleek look. I'm not sure what the "Psyc" clip is for; so I'm sure I'll never use it. I do wish it had presets, but since it's in the baby's room, it doesn't matter that much.

Motorola XPRT Android Phone (Sprint)

I'm really pleased with this phone. I bought it because I'm going to Paris in the Fall and wanted to be able to use it there. I especially like the combination of the qwerty keyboard and touchscreen. It seems to be better built than my BlackBerry. I had to have my Curve replaced and then worked on again. So far, no problems with the XPRT.

I got this phone for my wife for the simple fact that my wife & I was tired of the radio and antenna issues with HTC phones and Samsung phones. The Nexus S 4g(which me and the wife had) was the last straw and I knew I needed to go to a tried and true manufacturer and one that is a master of a trade and not just a jack of a bunch of ones. Motorola may not have the so called flashy and smooth UI (even though I can't tell the difference who focuses so much on a UI)of HTC and Samsung. Motorola knows how to make a fucntional phone that gets good reception whether it be wi-fi,1G,2G,3G, or 4G. Forget the additional features a phone has to be able to make a call and keep a signal, without that it is a shiny useless paper weight. My wife is going to stay with Motorola since she needs a functional phone and not some shiny UI with features that don't work because her phone can't keep a signal.

Pros:

Reception with radios and antenna's is King

UI Plain and just does what is needed

speaker phone and mic makes crystal clear calls

Notification light

Battery life for is good

Cons:

Camera's very average

To her the UI is not a con as if you want a touch wiz and sense UI feel stick to samsung and HTC. If you want a phone that just works with good features and keeps a good signal this is a great one for you the MOTOROLA XPRT.

I am now on my 3rd XPRT phone. 1 had a bad speaker and 2 are overheating for no reason. Battery app has shown 115 degrees..now that's hot! No combination of app kills, battery pulls, restarts, or trying different batteries helps. Once the XPRT starts to run hot, it doesn't stop. The overheat is a known issue for the "sister" Droid Pro from Verizon. Check the internet...lots out there regarding the Droid Pro but very little regarding the XPRT since it is so new. I really like the phone but there is clearly an issue here that needs to be addressed. Motorola, please get this fixed!

I have had this phone for about 2 weeks. I ordered it from Amazon Wireless. Let me say something about Amazon wireless first. This is an awesome service but note...they buy these phones from the manufacturer and if you have an issue with the phone you may have to deal with them and not the carrier directly.

Now as for the phone. It is very well built. The screen quality is quite acceptable. The qwerty keyboard works great, that is the main reason I got it. I had a Motorola Triumph phone through Virgin Mobile, which was an outstanding phone but I really missed the physical keyboard.

I have no issues whatsoever with this phone. It has not overheated or done any funky things. Now...guess what, I am returning it! Why?

Because I find it is too much of a Blackberry type phone for me. Now I have used Blackberry devices in the past, and they are great work phones, but as far as being multimedia devices which is what we want our phones to be nowadays they are not keeping up with the times. I was hoping this phone would bridge the gap between my Motorola Triumph and a Blackberry. Well not quite. My main issue is screen size and no 4G.

Here I digress a moment. On Sprint, and all other carriers as far as I know, the data plan for a 3G and 4G smartphone are the same cost. If so, why? This is not fair!. I argued this out with Sprint once I realized that I really wanted 4G. I just bought a phone which is 3G. Why is the data plan the same price if I can't use the extra speed? Well I got nowhere with them. Now my old Triumph was only 3G but all Virgin Mobile has is 3G, which is ironic since it is on Sprint's network and in fact is now owned by them. Anyway. I decided if I am going to pay $90.00 a month for a cell phone it had damned better be 4G especially since the price of the phone through Amazon Wireless is the same as, say, a Samsung Epic 4G (0.01!). Which has a bigger screen, a nicer screen, and still has a slide out (not my favorite but I can live with it)keyboard.

So...this is why the phone is going back. I found out that I could not just go to the Sprint store and swap the phone because I did not get it directly from Sprint. However Amazon Wireless was very nice about it.

So in summary. If you are looking for a road warrior business phone which is an Android phone and allows some multimedia functions, this phone is great. If you want a phone to read books, play games, watch YouTube and all that a lot...no 4G and a small less bright screen. Might want to reconsider.

I bought this for my brand new truck and had it professionally installed. The technician pointed out about halfway through the process that the face of the unit wasnt working properly. Sure enough several of the buttons didnt work and when pushed it randomly did something it wasnt supposed to do. I had already paid 300.00 for the install and tested everything else for myself. The unit itself the touchscreen and remote work fine. The faceplate is junk. It plays DVD's and I added a backup camera both are nice. Everytime I hit a bump in the road the unit either mutes itself or changes stations. I decided to keep the unit until I can install a better one. Dont waste your time or money on this one.

after installing what i thought was a quality product it turned on and worked great then the next time i turned on there was a screen malfunction, then the sound did not work and in the end the whole deck failed in just 3 days of use and i purchased a replacement and through this deck back in its box and so it sits on a shelf. was not impressed with the overall quality and i feel this deck should not be allowed to be sold as it not a quality part or meets any satisfaction standards

I bought this when I moved to replace an iPod dock that I had to leave behind. I bought it so I could listen to music in the shower, for which it has done a good job. I really liked the rotating because I constantly have the problem of positioning my iPod while watching movies and thought this would be a cool feature to have. I got it home to use it and apparently it is NOT compatible with video applications like Netflix. IT was very frustrating at first because I didn't know if it was Netflix or the dock being wonky.

The tech support offered with this system was awful. First off I could not understand what the person was saying because all he did was mumble. Second he had NO idea about anything concerning the product and 30 minutes of basic trouble shooting(which I had done before calling and made clear that I did so) he told me my best chance would be to call apple. He did not once answer any of my questions but instead sounded like he was just reading a poorly written script that whole time, costing me minutes on my phone for no solution.

So conclusion: for the original purpose it is fine but I will not be buying anymore iLive products for the fact of poor tech support as well as low compatibility with popular apps.

Just bought it today (not at Amazon) and returning it back tomorrow.

First of all, as soon as you plug your iPhone into this thing it asks you to install its free application from the AppStore. If you refuse, it will ask you every time again you plug your iPhone in. So you either give up and install it or enjoy this question every time over and over. Okay, I installed it. Now every time I plug in my iPhone, it starts playing music from my collection. I do no not want play anything! I just want to charge my phone! When I want to play music, I will find a way how to do that. Next is that it has a power button. When that power button is turned off, you will not hear your ringer or notifications. The phone get charged but switched to the silent mode. Well, one star is more than this device deserves.

I looked through a lot of different speakers before buying this one. And I thought for a long time before making this purchase because there weren't many reviews, so I thought that I'd add my review to help others that are now in a similar situation that I was.

I wanted a speaker that could do the following:

Charge my iPhone (without having to take the case off)

Play music decently

Had video out so I could play videos of the baby when her grandparents were over

The speakers do achieve all of the above (I haven't tested the video out yet though), so it gets points for that. It also is nice that the disc where your phone rests can be adjusted so your phone can be flatter or more upright. nice touch.

But it's by no means a GREAT product, because of several design flaws. The first is that you HAVE to download the specific app for it and play your media through it. This means that:

Playing a photo slideshow is a real pain. You can't just select the album(s) you want. You have to use the iLive app to select SPECIFIC photos one by one and add them to the app to play. This means if you have 10 folders, you would have to open each of the 10 folders and then pick the pictures you want individually. Time-consuming and inconvenient.

Playing videos is just as painful. You can't just play the videos off your Videos function or even pick it through the app like the photos. You have to connect your iPhone to iTunes, select the iLive app, and then add videos to the app that way. Terrible. I don't know who designed the app this way, but he/she should be shot. Twice. Thrice. With a shotgun.

Music starts playing once you plug the phone in, which could be nice for some people but not for me. Sometimes all I want is to charge the phone. Besides, if my husband is around, I really don't want him to know what I was last listening to.

The next huge flaw is in the physical design itself:

You can dock your phone without removing the case, which is great, but the connection is awkward. You have to push your phone down pretty hard, and it requires two hands to dock it.

It's tough to take your phone out. Because the 'holder' part is around the middle section of the phone, you have to pull the phone out from the top part of the phone, in other words, where the buttons are. This is annoying because it affects your grip and also the buttons are pressed. The you have to pull pretty hard because the connection is tight... so be careful, you don't want to see your phone go flying across the room.

That's my two cents. Hope it helps. If you can afford it, I'd recommend spending a little more money and getting a different speaker. if you want somethign cheap (under $30), this is not TOO bad a buy... but be prepared to live with something that doesn't quite feel like high quality. You get what you pay for, right?

UPDATE: You CAN in fact play videos from the iPhone's native Videos app. My bad. The iLive app does ask you to 'add videos' to play it from there, but you don't have to do this... I don't understand why anyone would use the iLive app to screen videos if you can just do it from the native Videos app... but there you go.

I ordered this for my wife for our master bath so that she could simply charge her iphone 4 (iOS 5.1, with case) while doing her makeup and keep track of time, or if she wanted to listen to Pandora, and this is exactly what we wanted. I was worried that iphone music would automatically play when she plugged in the iphone, but its great that it doesn't. You just hit the 'iphone' button on top of the clock radio to play the iphone music, which is a great feature. Its small and compact for a countertop and puts out good sound.

Update: It's still working great with iOS 6.1.2 and playing Pandora. Very rarely when plugged into the dock the iphone will say "device not supported..." (possible due to iOS updates), but we simply just unplug/replug the power to the dock, then re-dock the iphone, and it works again, no problem. (The iphone sets the clock time anyways, so no need to reset that)

I love how simple this clock is and that it works with an iPhone and iPod. I'm returning this because the volume on the alarm clock can't be controlled. I set the volume to level 10 and it doesn't matter. Once it goes off, it gets gradually louder and goes from level 0 to 26 in 5 seconds. It's so loud that it vibrates on the dresser and is screaming at you. It's terrible. I tried talking to customer service and they said there's no way to control the volume. That's just how it is.

Sangean PR-D7 BK AM/FM Digital Rechargeable Portable Radio

I recently read analysis of the Sangean PR-D5 vs. the Sangean PR-D7 radios. The reviews missed the point: These two Sangean radios target different market niches and needs. The PR-D5 is essentially a table radio while the PR-D7 targets folks that need a radio for domestic travel. I'm sure the engineers at Sangean see it this way. Why not buy both radios?

The Sangean PR-D7 has a clean crisp sound with very low noise floor on AM and FM bands, a great improvement over Sangean radios of similar size such as the ATS-505 or the ATS-909. BTW, I've tuned in all the major stations in the greater Phoenix area without a problem including the hard to catch 89.5, a classical station.

I have been very surprised at the overall performance of the PR-D7 radio and listen to this radio on a daily basis. The Sangean PR-D7 ($59) does 90 percent of what the Trivoli Songbook does at 25 percent of the Songbook's $200 price tag.

Still, the PR-D7 could use a multi-voltage AC adapter and a lock switch to be a complete global travel radio (like the Sangean ATS-606). Also, when traveling, cloth pouch would be a really nice touch. And while I'm making my wish list, the PR-D7 in a red or yellow case would be neat and easy to spot in a hotel room so you don't leave it behind.

One of the things I like about this radio are the controls, easy to learn and use, plus you can see the frequency and time on the display.

Update September 2008: I just recently purchased Sanyo's Eneloop AA rechargeable batteries for my PR-D7 giving me greater flexibility when enjoying this wonderful portable radio. I highly recommend Sanyo's Eneloop batteries.

Update October 2009: After owning this radio for 2 years, my little PR-D7 fell off a second story balcony and is now in pieces, so I ordered a second PR-D7 this morning. I suffer from cancer and kidney disease, so I've been in and out of the hospital several times this year, each time, my little Sangean PR-D7 went with me.

One of the neatest features of this PR-D7 is the no hassle recharging of the AA batteries, the radio automatically does this for you!!!

BTW, I ordered this radio from Amazon on a Friday morning and received the radio the next Tuesday morning. How's that for service!!!

Update January 2011: I have since purchased a Sangean PR-D9W radio which is now my go 2 radio.

I was trying to replace my Sony ICF-M410 which is about the same size. I was extremely disappointed I could not find it as they discontinued this model and I was so happy with that radio. In searching for reviews of AM/FM small portable radios, I came upon this one. Not too many reviews (7) but I bought it anyway because I wanted a radio that ran on batteries. I could not be happier with this radio!! Superior in sound and reception to the Sony I had and a BIG PLUS is that you can use rechargable batteries (I have been using the eneloop) and charge them in the radio! Doesn't get any better than that and I LOVE having the option of using the electrical adapter (which comes with it) or use it with the batteries only. There is no weather band or tv band on this like the Sony, but I really mostly use the radio for AM reception and talk radio which is excellent (FM is also). I highly recommend this radio for anyone looking for a truly portable radio with great sound, reception and a compact size. I also love the volume knob and the display which has a lighted clock along with the channel. Oh, I forgot about the sleep timer too that I love. Hope this helps.

~BOTTOM LINE~

Pros:

1All the top FM stations in my area come in lound and clear... Crystal clear. No static at all after having locked on an FM station.

2The single speaker is good enough. Nice and rich tone.

3Digital tuner lights up when you push any button so you can see the station and the time clearly.

4If you load it with rechargable batteries, this radio will recharge them. (the Sanyo eneloop rechargables are excellent) Be careful to unplug the adapter when the red light indicates a full charge or else the circuts overheat and the batteries feel hot to the touch. I had that happen to me once. Thought I fried it but after taking the batteries out and allowing it to cool off for 30 minutes it was working fine again.

5Functions as a alarm clock.

6AM is also very good. Nice and clear.

7AC adapter is included.

8Last but not least, it looks damn good on your table.

Cons:

1) Only 5 presets for each band. I wish it had 10.

I use a portable radio a lot, and I hate throwing away exhausted AA alkaline batteries. But most radios perform poorly on NiMH rechargeables because of the lower voltage and because old-style NiMH batteries self-discharge in a few days or a couple of weeks to the point that they need recharging again. This radio can use NiMH batteries with no loss of performance due to lower voltage. I recommend Sanyo Eneloops because they self-discharge much more slowly than ordinary NiMH batteries.

One word of caution though. You can recharge the batteries using the provided plug-in adapter, but because the recharge will be in series the batteries will not be recharged individually. This works OK for one or two recharges, but then the batteries tend to get unbalanced -some will be higher voltage than others -and performance will suffer. You will also observe a loss of energy capacity (the need for recharge will become increasingly more frequent). If you recharge the NiMH batteries in a good charger like a Maha or a La Cross, however, the cells will be charged individually and there will be no observed loss of capacity.

I received this as a gift from someone who knew I would use this for the purposes of travel, which I infer would be suitable for this "portable radio".

Pros:

-Decent to good build quality. I knocked it off the windowsill from almost a few feet above the hardwood and its fine--no rattles. Fit and finish is outstanding, but the glossy surface is less desirable in this application. Why not use something textured or rubberized instead?

-Rechargeable feature works fine with my Eneloops. I can play the radio many hrs a day for about a week before the batteries start to wear down.

-Pretty good sound quality to my untrained ear, and can get loud!

Cons:

-Awkward button design. The power button sticks out more than the others, which means the radio gets turned on and off in your pack. A low profile sliding toggle button mounted topside would work much better. Heck, all the buttons could have gone up there, to make room for a jumbo display. Also, the front mounted buttons make one-handed control of the radio impossible when it isn't standing against a wall.

-Reception isn't as great as the reviews indicated. I get better in my 08 Nissan truck.

-Feature set doesn't justify the price. Where is support for RDS, which is standard in Europe and Latin America (this is a travel radio right)? Some rubber feet would be nice. How about the ability to receive S.A.M.E. weather messages? And the AC adapter isn't even dual-voltage? Whiskey tango foxtrot?

I applaud Sangean for making a nice little unit that gives the Songbook a run for its money, but I still think there is room for improvement in this radio.

C. Crane CCRadio-EP AM/FM Radio

I don't usually submit reviews on Amazon. I don't think I ever have actually, but to see this CC Radio EP rated so poorly with only six reviews as of this writing, I felt compelled to contribute.

This radio is a nice, affordable and quality AM/FM analog radio.

The Twin Coil fine tuning knob does work.

The radio can be problematic in the higher frequencies of the AM band, as has been noted in other reviews that aren't on Amazon.

If you are a prospective buyer, I would seek out the review of this radio written by Jay Allen. Just use a search engine with his name and the name of this radio and you should find it.

His opinion is the one I have of this radio, which is a very good one.

Again, I am not a ham but I do DX the MW band. I own over one hundred radios and I can assure you that if you enjoy analog radios, you will enjoy this one. If not, that's okay with me because I certainly do enjoy. In fact, after I write this review, I need to buy an extra.

Buy C. Crane CCRadio-EP AM/FM Radio Now

I bought two radios simulteneously, the Crane CCRadio-EP and the Sangean named below. I compared them under the Sangean listing, and reproduce that here, also.

The Sangean PR-D5 AM/FM radio may be just the radio for you...or not. It all depends on what you expect from your radio for instance, do you expect to leave it on a table or counter-top most of the time while moving it from room to room only occasionally? Or, do you need a take-with-you portable for your active lifestyle? Is most of your listening FM stereo, or tuning in ballgames from distant AM stations? Are you an AM DXer who enjoys logging those distant stations when conditions are favorable, running up and down the frequencies for hours hoping for a record catch?

In addition to this Sangean, I also purchased the C. Crane CCRadio-EP via Amazon on the same day. They are very different units, and each has its strong points. You may prefer one to the other based on some issues mentioned in the first paragraph. Their prices are about the same.

The Sangean is a digital model with 5 FM presets and 5 AM. It has two small stereo speakers, clock functions, and is easy and convenient to use. The Crane is an analog radio, having no presets or clock functions, a single (but larger) speaker, bass and treble knobs, selectable AM bandwidth, a neat lighted dial, and a fine-tune adjustment for AM. Both have very sturdy FM whip antennas, and both have excellent AM antennas, as well.

The Sangean has the largest built-in ferrite bar AM antenna likely to be found in this size radio. At almost 8" in length, it does a nice job of receiving AM. The Crane's AM antenna is their twin-coil ferrite bar model which can be somehow elctronically manipulated with the radio's separate fine-tuning control sometimes it allows you to hear stations which were buried in noise much more clearly. If you are an AM DXer, or do a lot of listening to marginal, distant AM stations, the Crane has the edge due to its analog design and its special antenna. However, the Sangean is no slouch at AM better than most, even but one notch under the Crane in this regard.

The Crane also has the advantage for someone on the go, for one simple but important reason it has a carry handle. Carrying the Sangean is very awkward, and the grip it provides very tenuous the owner who carries it often will sooner or later drop it, and that is pretty much inevitable. Could be damaged from a fall. The Crane handle flips down and hides in a nice recess.

Both radios sound good...but again different. The Sangean is a leaner, but more refined stereo FM sound, while the Crane has a bigger sound with a bit deeper low end, which I hesitate to refer to as 'bass' for either radio. Both provide FM stereo with headphone use. For near-field listening (such as sitting at hand on a table) the Sangean sounds better to me with its pleasing stereo presentation. Outdoors, or further away, the bigger sound of the Crane suits me better.

The Sangean has a sexier look, the Crane looks more traditional. Both are very good at reception about the same for FM, with the Crane having that AM edge. No handle what was Sangean thinking? I really love both of these, and between the two they fill my needs nicely, while out-performing every other radio in the house from a reception perspective. While I recommend either, I also can suggest both. Works for me, and my wife loves the Sangean.

(Left out mentioning that the Crane's AM bandwidth selector does add another tool for helping keep that distant ballgame listenable. Another point for the Crane.)

I have owned this radio for about two months now, and I am very happy with it. I live in a rural area and I am very particular about the radios I own because of the weak radio signals that beset me here. I am, therefore, pleased to say the C. Crane CCRadio-EP excels at receiving AM signals, with the distant station that carries my favorite baseball team's games coming in strong and clear. It is nearly as sensitive on FM stations, too, with my preferred NPR stations coming in very clearly. Despite the fact that it has analog tuning, it holds onto signals very well and doesn't require constant retuning to keep faint stations properly tuned. Sound quality is very good for a radio of its size and it has bass/treble adjustment, too. Sound is not quite as full as my GE SuperRadio II, but it is slightly better than my Sony ICF-EX5MK2. The bottom line is that the sound is enjoyable for both music and the spoken word. Concerned about QC, I ordered my C. Crane CCRadio-EP directly from Crane and it has performed admirably. I have no complaints about the build or material quality of the radio. Battery life has been good so far, as well.

I would recommend this radio without hesitation to anyone who is looking for a portable radio that offers excellent reception and very good sound quality. Two thumbs, way up!

I purchased this radio for it's AM radio capabilities. I like to DX the mediumwave band and this radio failed a very simple litmus test for me. Being located in downstate NY, I tune to WBZ in Boston on AM 1030. A relatively easy catch. With WBZ being sandwiched between 1010 WINS and 1050 ESPN this radio could not hear WBZ because of the two powerhouse stations above and below it and lack of sensitivity. All I heard was bleed from the two neighboring stations. Fiddling with the twin ferrite control and trying the radio in multiple locations made no difference to reception. My Sangean PR-D5 had absolutely no trouble tuning in WBZ. The difference between the radios is like night and day. If you only wish to hear 50K clear channel broadcasts and 1-5K local stations, this radio may suit you, but for more critical applications and those of us who enjoy the world of MW DX I cannot recommend this radio. It just does not have the selectivity to get the job done, twin ferrite and all.

Sony Dash HID-C10 Internet Surfing Device

Do NOT buy this product as it's apparently end-of-life! Yet another device that had promise only to be ruined by Sony's

mismanagment. The Dash is (was?) a luxury alarm clock developed by a company named Chumby who also produced models of their

own. Some months ago, Chumby decided to exit the business and allowed their own devices to be released from the central

managed service with a firmware update. Rather than following suit, Sony decided to take on servicing the Dash by moving

the service to it's own in-house servers. They also shut down the developer service earlier in the year while continuing to

maintain that the service itself would continue. They continued to sell the product on their own website up until a few

weeks ago.

For weeks now Dash owners have suffered random outages (including the device as well as the Dash management website) with

no explanation from Sony other than canned repsonses. Even those (useless) responses have now stopped and any comments on

the Sony forum pointing out the now solid outage of service are being deleted. Let me be clear that a service outage turns

the Dash into a brick... it is completely useless and simply shows error messages on startup (just what you want from a

device many use to wake up in the morning).

This is not the first time Sony has left customers in the cold and it shows a clear pattern of disinterest in true customer

service. The fact that Sony has consistantly lost millions of dollars per quarter over the past several years shows that

consumers have had enough of this policy and are leaving Sony in droves for companies that value their customers. So you

don't want to support the Dash service anymore? How about opening it up to the homebrew community like Chumby did for

future development, or BUYING US OUT. No one who bought a Dash for upwards of $75 (many over $100 or even $150) did so

thinking it would be useless in a year or even a month for some. It's incredibly disrespectful to the customer base.

The worst part of all of this? Not only did the device, in my opinion, have the potential to single-handedly take over the

vast majority of the alarm clock market if properly marketed/priced, but it was also rather intuitive to use and quite

versatile. It's all been a poignant lesson on trusting any cloud service, even ones associated with companies that have

plenty of resources to run them properly. In this case, it appears that they simply choose not to follow through. Never

again Sony.

This is not a tablet. But this is exactly what I needed or wanted. I really enjoy internet radio and I wanted something for my home office where I do most of my sewing. It's the perfect size, it was really easy to set up, I can watch my Netflix on here while I'm working, I can listen to Pandora or Slacker or TuneIn radio while I work.

I have a number of little apps on here that come in handy. I press the menu and hey there's the weather in a snap for the location I need it. I read my NPR headlines on here, I get a word of the day. My son can sit and play a few a games while he waits for me to finish a project.

This could make a decent alarm clock, waking you up and providing you with all the instant news or weather info you need.

This was super easy to set up. If you want to set up Pandora on the Dashboard you need to go to Sony and enter a code to transfer the account to your Dashboard, but so far that was the only account that was 'tricky' to set up. If you want a news station on your desk, in your family room perhaps in your kitchen this could be great for you. If you want an inexpensive way to listen to internet radio, this could be your answer. You want a really fancy alarm clock, go for it. It's easy to use and navigate, it has fun apps, and I like it, it was what I expected and what I wanted.

I use this as an alarm clock that provides personal and customized internet at my fingertips when I wake up each morning. The price is a little steep but the convenience factor and the great updates make it worth it for me.

This unit needs to be plugged into an outlet and your house needs to have WI-FI SET UP for it to work properly. The Dash is not a portable unit! even if the photos seem to suggest it. It comes with popular ones preloaded (Facebook, twitter, CNBC, etc.) and to access more apps (NY Times, Netflix, Amazon on Demand, Pandora, Slacker, homebrewed), you need to register online. There are plenty of cool apps to browse through and new ones are constantly added. I cannot comment on using it around the house as a "personal internet viewer" as advertised since I do not need it to provide that function but I could see it working well in a kitchen. I sometimes play videos and music understanding that the video source determines quality and the speakers are basic and okay but not outstanding. Since I use it as an alarm clock, the speaker quality is not an issue for me. There is no memory card slot but there is an usb port. They recently added a "WWW' button on the menu which allows for easy connection to yahooo.com, goggle.com and sony.com homepages only, for now. The updates are amazing and the Sony Dash keeps getting better and better the longer I have it (going on 1 year).

The two beefs I had with the Dash have been fixed: (1) I had trouble getting it to display the correct time zone but this was addressed by very helpful Sony customer reps.; and (2) instructions to press snooze button twice to access menu was spotty and took several attempts but was advised to use one long touch to access menu and that works every time. The only remaining issues are that the touch keyboard can be tricky (people with large fingers or long fingernails will have a problem with the small keyboard). Despite these minor irritants, I think this is the best alarm clock ever!

I use this strictly as a bedside alarm clock with super benefits. The light given off is adjustable with a nighttime mode easily reached at the press of an onscreen button (moon icon) and you can even put it into a black sleep mode for a perfect night's sleep if you require complete darkness. The unit has a 7" screen and the ability to customize it. The set background colors change throughout the day which is pretty cool. Granted, it takes a little work to set this puppy up but once it's running, it's a thing of beauty. I love being able to set several different alarms (weekday AM, bus pick-up, weekend AM, soccer practice, etc.) and be able to set them to different alarm types (regular alarm sounds, radio, videos, personal messages, etc.). I can program my local weather, get top news headlines, music, video or any other of the 100s of apps it boasts and at the touch of the screen -view them when I roll over in the morning. It's a brilliant way to start the day!

I agree with the other Sept. 15, 2012 reviewer/user, this product is now useless as of yesterday (at least, for me).

I woke-up yesterday -9/14/2012and saw this message on my DASH screen: "Failed to authorized: No response from the server. Please visit for help with this problem".

Prior to yesterday, most of the apps either slowly disappeared or won't work properly.

So, I spent the better part of yesterday, trying to resuscitate my DASH. Went to my sony.com account & deactivated the DASH with the intention of reactivating the unit. Boy, their site for the DASH is horrible now (Sony can't even create a decent web site to support their products??).

I also went to (I also learned that this company is slowly disbanding or had already disbanded but, at least, their web site is still running though a bit flaky at times) to seek help there, but, it will re-direct you to Sony's horrible DASH website if you wanted to activate your Sony DASH.

Restored to factory default, updated the firmware via USB & via the Internet...but still I get the same error messages I mentioned above or something like, " device and suit mismatch"

Today, I'm still working on it but, still getting the "No response from server" to re-authorize my DASH.

I bought this Sony DASH (HID-C10) only sometime in Jan. 2011 for $149 and now, I'm just looking at a black paperweight.

Sony will never be like Apple. I bought my first Mac (Mac Plus) in 1985 and it's still working today!

The intent of this review is to warn people to avoid buying this end-of-life Sony product, as well as, to show how horrible Sony supports some of their end-of-life products.

My wife has been using a cheap Emerson alarm clock for years. The buttons have broken off and it was time for an upgrade. I gave her my Bose wave radio, and I decided to buy the Sony Dash.

I got a great deal on this from Amazon, under $100 for brand new. I hooked it up and was told I needed to upgrade the firmware. I grabbed a USB drive, formatted it to FAT32 and downloaded the zip file for the firmware direct from Sony (must be kept zipped...DO NOT UNZIP this file). After successful firmware update, which acted 5 minutes or so, I was able to play around with it.

The Dash plays video from Netflix and Amazon (yeah!), and a few others. It also plays music from Pandora and other streaming services. For me, I really just wanted an alarm clock on steroids. This is it!!

The Dash sits nicely on the bedside table, showing me hyper accurate time and current weather. At night, when I need it the most, there is a night mode that dims the display to almost nothing and enlarges the time to a perfect size. The night time mode is minimal info the time. Another tap of the power saving button and the screen goes completely black. When this happens, a small orange light comes on on the bottom right of the dash. Probably so you can find it in the dark. To me, the nighttime mode is the best feature. I need it totally dark to sleep and this fit the bill. To see the time, you just tap anywhere on the screen and it will go back to dim mode where it shows the time. Another tap and it is black again. Amazing!!

Sound quality is quite good at low levels, though there is really no bass to speak of. I can listen to one of my Pandora stations and set the sleep timer to drift off to sleep. Wonderful!

Buy this for what it is, a great bedside alarm clock, not as a device to watch movies on. It does that fine, but it is awkward with a cord lying in bed. I have an iPad to do that.

Sirius Satellite Radio is an excellent service, with extraordinarily rich and varied content, and therefore worthy of much more than XACT Communications offers in this "universal" kit. This review is ONLY related to XACT's equipment, and NOT to the Sirius service.

I've owned the receiver and kit for three months and I am now in the market for a replacement. Here's why:

1. The keypad interface is the least intuitive of any I've ever encountered. Although I pride myself on being something of a technophile, I must contstantly refer to the user's guide to figure how how to accomplish things with this keypad. You can't even enter a station by number directly! (You must select each of the 3 digits from a displayed list of digits using arrow keys and the enter button). Although the receiver boasts storing 18 "favorites," you can not get to any directly via the keypad; in all cases you must scroll through groupings (A through F) or lists first.

2. The user's guide has a few significant errors, such as how to store favorites channels.

3. The "universal" mount for vehicles comes with one small plastic disk with two-sided tape that adheres to the dashboard. The base unit easily detaches from this disk for use in the home. However, if you want to use it in a second VEHICLE, you need another of these little disks. XACT absolutely refuses to sell the disk alone, and insists that you spend another $50 (!) for another complete kit if you want to move the unit from car to car.

4. The display is too small, and often gets "stuck" with info from prior selections, requiring a reset.

5. Mobile reception is spotty, even in clear, unobstructed areas. I'm in the NYC suburban area, and lose the signal every ten minutes or so when on the road. A friend with an in-dash receiver for Sirius experiences no such problems.

6. In order to power this unit by batteries (for use like a walkman), you must purchase a huge, clunky wrap-around battery kit for $100 (!).

I recommend you definitely consider the Sirius service, but look for an alternative to any XACT hardware.

P.S. Since first writing this review, my XACT unit failed completely due to overheating, which I discovered is a very common problem with XACT equipment. Although the store where I purchased it provided a replacement, I fear the problem recurring after the warrantee has expired.

I bought the unit from a large retailer in Dec 2004, having been "sold" on the premise that the XACT unit had the most functionality for the price and was more portable than other units available easily transferring from car to home to boombox, etc., if I elected those routes (with additional hardware). I liked the idea of portability and went with the XACT vehicle package.

I agree that the vehicle mounting unit is extremely limited. The actual mount has limited tilt and is cluncky with a screw that fastens to the back of the unit, making mounting and dismounting somewhat difficult. I ended up building my own base for the mount that fits in a cupholder, because the original mount wouldn't fit anywhere else. With my homemade creation, the setup works quite well. I keep my antenna on the dashboard and haven't had a big problem with reception. I even traveled 1200 miles across the county and the reception was fine. Of course, I did have to change FM modulator channels periodically from city to city, but that should be expected.

The unit is very limited overall. Scanning stations is very difficult while driving and I rely on my saved stations nearly exclusively. However, the keypad only gives access to 3 saved stations at a time and this can be annoying. I still haven't figured out the Memo/S-Seek button, even after reading the manual several times, and it seems usless.

Most troubling, in April, I returned to the big retailer where I purchased the unit (in Dec), to buy the home mounting dock. However, the retailer no longer carries XACT products in its stores. It is available on the web, but this is rather unsettling. I purchased the unit as the newest, best product less than 4 months ago and now I can't find it in any stores. I bought the unit for portability and versatility and it's already difficult to find the additional components for it.

In general, the redeeming quality of the XACT unit is that it allows me to listen to Sirius, which is an excellent service. Other than that, XACT offers poor functionality and design. If I were to do it again, I'd get a unit from a more recognizable company and definitely one with a dial.

I have had the unit two weeks and worked hard to make it function as required. First the FM signal to my radio is so weak that there is too much noise, what happen to CD quality?

Due to the FM broadcast issue I had to have it mounted and setup with a hard wire into my system which cost an additional $100.

The screen and functions are managable, but not great. This is a pull over and reset unit, it is way to hard to manage this unit while driving because it is not designed for ease of use and the screen is so small and hard to read.

The unit gets very hot so you have to mount it accordingly. Holding the unit and using the keys is uncomfortable because of the heat, so the remote is a required tool.

The antena had to be on the roof because through a window it did not get enough signal.

Overall I liked the low price and have fixed most of the issues, but would not purchase this unit again if there were any other choice.

With both the interface (as noted above) and mainly with the lack of mounting options. Every other unit I've looked at seems to have lots of options for car mounting, while this unit has one silly ridiculouly priced option that only contemplates bottom mounting. While there are 18 presets only 3 are readily available. The FM quality is spotty but that's an issue I've seen in reviews of most of these type units.

All in all, Sirius service is wonderful but I may well replace this Xact unit with some other option.

The receiver has a built in FM broadcast modulator that did not function well. You can remedy the situation by plugging in a headset in the upper left corner and hang the headset wire from your rearview mirror. This acts as an added transmitting antenna.

The search function is understood by Albert Einstein, and the presets are limiting. On the positive side, It does store many channels on band A-F most easily accessed by using the remote. The channels are generally crisp and clean. The Sirius stations offer a great variety. All-in-all, I'm happy with what I got for the price of the unit.
