I was almost scared off by the negative reviews here. I really need a radio/cd player with a headphone jack to use with my pillow speaker so I don't disturb my husband. This clock radio isn't too large for my night stand and the sound quality is fine whether I'm listening to a CD or the radio. I did hold on to the shipping materials in case mine quit after three days like someone said...I did not get a defective one so I tossed the boxes. :-) I am very pleased with this clock radio and I do think it's a bargain.

I bought this so I could wake to my own commercial-free music. After three days, the unit stopped playing CDs altogether so now I have yet another clock radio. During the brief period it worked, the CD sound was so terrible it startled me the first time I tried it: crackly, tinny and thin. The radio sound is slightly better, but not even close to my old (also cheap) clock radio. During the three days it worked, the unit woke me every day with the first track of the CD. You cannot adjust the alarm to start with a random track, or pick up where it left off the day before. The unit accepts a battery to keep time during an outage; however, the manual says the time will not display until power is restored, and I'm guessing that means the alarms won't work either.

Other negatives: Time-setting is uni-directional, so if you pass the hour you wanted when clicking through, you have to cycle around the clock again. My cheap RCA clock radio has spoiled me with bi-directional clock setting and digital radio tuning.

The Coby's buttons are flat, stiff, and hard to press. The radio is tuned via an awkwardly placed thumb wheel at the bottom right side of the unit, and it's difficult to lock on the station you want. The clock numbers are nice and large; however, like most clock radios, they are way too bright and cannot be dimmed (except by throwing a sock over the radio, which is what I had to do).

Since I dawdled a month before opening and using the radio, Amazon's 30-day Return window has expired. I'm going to try to return it anyway--without the CD function, it's useless to me. I'm going back to my old clock radio which was just as cheap, but has much better sound. Anyone know a Philadelphia-area radio station that plays fewer than 4 commercials between 5:45 and 6 am?

Positives? I like the rounded shape. And I was able to set the clock and alarm times initially without reading the manual, something I've never been able to do with other clock radios. It arrived promptly and was securely packaged. It was my mistake not to immediately set it up for use.

I purchased the Coby Radio/CD player recently. The first one I had to return right away because the CD would not play. I received my second one within a week. It seemed to be just what I wanted...small enough for my bedside table, good size numbers on the Clock and good directions. I was able to play my CDs, too.....for a couple of weeks. When I got back from an almost 2 week vacation, tho, the CD no longer played!

I have returned the 2nd Coby and will not buy another one. I am disappointed that it didn't work for me.

I wanted a cd player alarm clock to play self recorded CD's. I like to play relaxation and meditation CD's if I'm having trouble sleeping. Unfortunately this unit plays only pre recorded CD's. At this point in history this must be about the last of the "CD only" players. In as much as most of my CD's are those I've recorded, this unit is essentially useless to me. Also, the controls are not user friendly. In that most of one's interaction with an alarm clock is done in the dark, this clock's buttons etc, are hard to see and/or feel. Save your money. There must be better quality clocks on the market.

I have no qualms with the Coby alarm as an alarm clock and a radio, it's very straightforward and easy to use, but the CD player was so disappointing (the main reason I bought it). The VERY FIRST time I used the CD player, I played about 6 tracks and it just died, I'm not even kidding. It's worth your money to invest in a higher quality product.

Well I figured I just had to have a new alarm clock for my iPhone. I had been using an iHome Alarm with an adapter and was very happy to see this one on the market. However, in practice I was not that thrilled with it. It's kinda like an old $10. alarm from Radio Shack. It works but nothing about it really stands out as excellent. The iPhone 5 does fit into the connector and the alarm comes with a support bracket to help alleviate some of the pressure on the plug which is a great idea. Did I mention the alarms, radio, etc. all work? Yes, they all do.

However, to plug in the iPhone takes some work and does not fit so smoothly. (I came to appreciate the recessed area of my iHome alarm that causes the iPhone to just fit perfectly as it guides you in) In fact I prefer using the adapter on my old alarm to inserting the iPhone into this alarm as its just easier and smoother. I mentioned that $10. Radio Shack alarm? That's about the quality of the sound that this produces and the glaring red light is also akin to that old $10. alarm. Overall a functional product but if you like a better sound quality and better engineered products as I have become accustom too I would suggest you wait for the iHome version.

I purchased this radio recently and had to return it as the weather band did not work. I received the replacement radio and found the same problem along with the fact that the flashlight did not fuction. I live close to the Weather station repeater and receive a strong signal on my other units. I rasied the antenna, shortened it, etc. ran it off the batteries, crank to no avail. It is pretty scary considering this unit has the NOAA alert built in. I have sent an email to GPX regarding this and am awaiting a reply. Honestly, I may have received a bad unit from a batch; however, I do not know how that could be. In any case, I would not recommend this radio, especially if you are depending on weather alerts or reports. Oh, yeah, the back-lit display does not work with the crank batteries, only with the 6 AA batteries you must install. Way to go GPX, another fine product...........

I sure wish i had the one the other guy loves so much. Mine's utter garbage. I turns the crank, and the radio comes in very well. Thats about all it does.

See, the presence of a crank fools the buyer into thinking that they will not need batteries to make this object work. I couldn't read anything but extremely faint garbage on the digital display, until i put in 2 AA batteries.

The light is crap. The manual says that 1 minute of turning the crank will charge the batteries 25%, and that a full charge yields 1 hour of flashlight life. I cranked this odious chinese insult until my arms were numb, and that got me AT BEST 45 seconds of light.

The engineering is flawed, and i'm willing to bet that my unit is average. While the design is heavy on features, it has a great deal of counterinuitive aspects. Firstly, the flashlight is incandescent, as opposed to LED, meaning it is a more efficient heater than a light. Secondly, the reasoning behind the switch layout is insane. For instance, the sliding switch on the top has 3 settings: 1. off 2. loud emergency alarm 3. flashlight, in that order. This means you turn on the alarm every time you want to turn the flashlight on or off.

For a $10 radio, such flaws are acceptable. For the $39 radio/flashlight/alarm clock i bought at bass pro, it's infuriating.

Edit: how about this guy who gave this thing the same review twice, from two accounts, 3 years apart?

This is truly a piece of CRAP.

The first thing I did was to install the 6 AA batteries, instantly my eyes lit up for the clock was working. I found the clock simple to set. Then it was down hill from there. The crank did not work the AM/FM radio did not work.

You get what you pay for,$ +s/h too good to be true. Lesson well learned.

Advise spent the extra money and get a brand name weatherband radio.

Bought one from second hand store. I paid too much @ $2.00. Everything worked ,..poorly. I would not depend on this for an emergency.

I looked at a lot of emergency radios and this one came out on top. The weather station in Los Angeles comes in crystal clear, even running off just the dynamo. The hand crank is sturdy enough. The radio works well, but it works best with the batteries in it. The tuner is sensitive, but once you get it on a station, it sticks. The flashlight is OK. The emergency siren is OK. The back battery panel is going to pop open if you drop it. Although this product is multi-purpose, in a real emergency I will only care about the hand crank, the flashlight, and the weather (emergency broadcast) station.

Aside from buying my music on disc, as I like having a hardcopy backup, I will no longer be using CD's thanks to this head unit. First off, it works fantastically with my iPhone 3GS, which I assume almost everyone buying this head unit will also have (or an iPod at minimum). Plug in the iPhone and it recognizes the entire library in about 3 seconds (I believe the older IDA-X305, no S, would sometimes give people problems with recognizing their iPhone/iPod. I've had no such problems so far). This is INCREDIBLY nice, as before I had my music collection on 6-7 mp3 CD's. Searching for what you want to listen to is a breeze and functions similarly to an iPod Classic. As a side note, when you plug in the iPhone, it automatically switches to iPod mode and starts playing where the currently playing song on the iPod left off. Some people may be annoyed by this if you just want to charge your iPhone, but it's more convenient than not, considering it's the mode you'll probably use the most. Maybe Alpine should have made it an optional setting.

I can't comment too much on Pandora. I don't use it often, but it's nice that it's there. It takes a little longer before the music starts compared to the iPod function. Usually about 10 maybe 15 seconds tops, before music from Pandora starts playing.

Stereo presets are a bit weird to set, but it's not overly complicated. That's the price of having so few buttons on the face.

The screen is perfect for navigating selections. A full function LCD is so much nicer than the one or two lines of text on most of other head units. If you're OCD like me and have album artwork for every song on your iPhone, you'll appreciate the beautiful LCD screen even more. Some people may find the screen too bright at night, but it can be turned down I believe with a dimmer setting.

Sound quality is very good in my opinion, especially for just a head unit. I'm not using an external amp. I had an Alpine CDA-9856 head unit before this one and this one sounds noticeably better. Perhaps Alpine used the additional available space and reduced cost of omitting the CD player to put in a better internal amp? Maybe, but my cynicism makes me think otherwise.

So after all of my glorification of this head unit you may be asking, why only four stars? Lack of value in my opinion. Receivers cheaper than this give you many features that Alpine makes you pay extra for, and they aren't cheap either. Buying just the imprint processor (stock EQ's are fairly basic, probably on purpose so you'll buy this addon) and bluetooth phone kit will cost almost as much as the head unit itself. Then there's HD radio and satellite tuners to potentially buy as well. If you're buying Alpine though, you are probably already expecting not to get much bang for your buck.

All in all, if you have an iPhone/iPod and the money, this head unit is for you. You will be hard pressed to find a head unit that gives you better control of it than this.

Installed this last weekend and love it!!

All my music is on my iPhone so I wanted a head unit that functioned well with the iPhone. Songs load quickly and scrolling through the head unit interface is easy very similar to the iPhone itself. I love the artwork display looks very good on the LCD screen.

Sound quality is good although I probably need to upgrade from factory speakers to really take advantage of it.

The detachable face unit is a plus for deterring theft.

Being that it is expandable it is nice to know I have the option to add bluetooth, HD radio, CD changer or satellite radio down the road if I want. I'm glad these weren't included because then the overall cost would be higher and right now I'm not using any of them.

Bottom line: If you are an iPhone / iPod music person and don't need CDs, this is the head unit suited for you.

***********Update 12/23/10

1. Just found out I can play RHAPSODY through this which is AWESOME. Now you can listen to any song on demand, anywhere! You can't control the iPhone through the x305s when you're using Rhapsody but at least it works!

To use rhapsody make sure the X305s is on iPhone USB connection and then just open up Rhapsody.

Set up with an Alpine PDX-5 Amp, 12" Boston Acoustics G5 Sub, and Stock JBL Speakers 6.5 Front 6x9 Rear in a 2010 Toyota Camry.

Surprisingly, the stock JBLs are holding up extremely well. I've received a lot of compliments on how great my system sounds. So Audio Quality is top notch. Features are also great with the IPOD functionality and Control. Tested the Pandora on a friend's IPHONE and set up was quick and easy. Far better than having to pay for satellite radio.

Now the negatives. It is Bluetooth READY not Bluetooth INCLUDED. It will require a BT Adapter which will cost another $100-150 more! The head unit cost just jumped to $400! For $250, you can grab a Kenwood KDC-X994 that also has the Pandora feature and already has the BT Adapter built in. I didn't mind at first because the Audio Quality pretty much evened out the negatives. That is until, I got the Alpine 400BT installed.

With the IDA x305 and x305S, you need to take extra steps in setting up your BT! After activating the BT Feature on the radio, I had to reset the radio, take off the faceplate, put the faceplate back on, turn the ignition off, turn the ignition on, turn it off again, then finally turn it back on just to pair the head unit with my phone! My installer and I didn't know the magical steps until after I had to call Alpine tech support. So after finally getting my BT up and running, I make my test call and more bad news. The call quality is bad, the person I called could tell I was either on speakerphone or on a BT headset. What's worse is, the person I called could hear themselves echo on their side!

To summarize, if all you're looking for a is a great head unit that will give you top notch audio quality, get this head unit. If you need bluetooth, go for the Kenwood. That's what I'll be doing after I sell this H/U.

So I was able to purchase both of these decks and have had them for about a year now. I've also got the bluetooth unit (a must!).

I'll cut straight to my issues.

the 303 is able to control Spotify w/ skips on the head unit. the 305 cannot

the 303 is able to list the name of the track and display the image ont he iphone. the 305 cannot

the 303 is able to do all the above w/ Pandora. the 305 can also.. but you get a ugly screen that just says you're connected to alpine. that's it.

both units are able to multi task. (run pandora & have a voice activated navigation on the back w/ waze or trapster)

Also the 303 is NOW able to control pandora from the deck. (this is new from the release of iOS 5.01)

If I had to do it over.. i'd get the 303 and save myself the 100 bucks.

Probably a reason why the 303 has been discontinued cause it does the same things as the 305 but for less.

I thought I would miss having a CD player in the car, but with this radio and Pandora, iPod or smartphone capability, I'll probably never go back to a CD player again. Though this unit has satellite capability too, remember that to use Sirius, the unit must be paired with a satellite tuner and a subscription must be activated. I have not re-connected with Sirius yet, but I am considering it (I miss a lot of the news & entertainment channels). For now Pandora does the trick, music-wise. Overall, the Pandora feature, the removable face plate and the big knob for easy control and Alpine's reputation were what sold me. There are precious few aftermarket radios out there that are Pandora-ready, but I suspect this will change soon.

NOTE: You will also need a bluetooth adapter if you wish to use bluetooth to hook up a smartphone to this stereo. Though sometimes my Alpine bluetooth adapter can be a little slow to connect, overall I am happy with the way that device works with the iDA-X305S. When I get a call, Pandora cuts out and the phone answers through a microphone on the sun visor (audio plays through the car speakers). When the call completes, the radio goes back to playing Pandora. The stereo even displays who the call is to/from. I recommend pairing this with the Alpine bluetooth adapter for seamless integration.

Some people think the aftermarket car stereo world is dead but for high dollar custom jobs. I certainly hope this is not the case, as units like this can really bridge the gap in crappy stock systems versus going all out and spending thousands on a custom installation. Alpine is exclusively a car stereo producer and their years of experience shows. Great product!

Although it doesn't say it in the listing or the radio / alarm clock's manual you cannot charge a newer version of the iphone or ipod. Apparently they use 5 volt usb charging power and this radio is set up for the old ipod's 12v firewire connection charging. You can buy a Firewire charge converter which will cost you more money and render the docking ability useless, due to the connection being too long to just be supported by the connector. This radio equal a waste of money for me.

Uniden BC340CRS 100-Channel Clock Radio Scanner

This is a very good scanner. The instructions are not exactly "clear as a bell", but if you've ever had a scanner before you should be able to get the gist of the operation. {To program, press PGM, enter the frequency and the memory location you want, then press PGM again.} When it is in the search mode, you can press the "bank number" (1-10) and enable/disable that bank. You can enter 10 frequencies per bank, you can set one frequency per bank as a priority channel. The weather band and tv/fm radio bands work ok. I love the fact that it runs on the batteries when unplugged, and then when you plug it in it switches over to ac power although you're not quite sure which it's running from since there's no indication. The alarm is a bit on the weak side, but then you're probably not buying it to be an alarm clock.

I ordered this scanner from Uniden's website as I have had a big interest in Public Safety ever since I was little. I also get bored here easily as there is not much good music on the radio so I ordered this to be able to kill some day time.

This is a conventional 100 channel base scanner. While the initial programming is not too smooth sailing even for tech savys like me, the operation is easy once one gets a hang of it. It lets you save 100 different frequencies used by the PD, FD, airport, marine, and ameteur bands. It even has NOAA weather band, AM/FM radio, and a clock that can awaken you in the morning. While I do agree that the alarm is sometimes on the weak side, it beats having an alarm clock by the nightstand.

I will warn people that many agencies (such as police and fire departments) have now switched to more secure 800 MHz trunked radio systems. This means you may not be able pick up local chatter (like what I wanted). This trunked system allows multiple authorities to talk using only a select set of frequencies. Always research what is in use in your area before buying.

Overall, a very good scanner.

This is a great scanner. I love scanners and have several of them. This is a great scanner especialy if you want it in the bedroom. It has an alarm clock, am/fm radio, audio for tv channels 2 -13, and the sound clarity is great. This is a perfect scanner and the price is great. I would recommend this scanner.

I've had the Uniden 100 channel scanner about a month and a half. It has been my first scanner. I primarily have it set for my city's police broadcasts and listen to it while I'm reading or doing other projects. It's been informative to have that information and entertaining as well. I haven't had any problems with it in the time that I've had this scanner. The only thing I was a little disappointed about was that I didn't seem to be able to pick up any other types of scans besides police traffic when I tried to let it scan for things like air traffic, medical helicopter, etc. However, I'm not ruling out that in this day and age perhaps those channels are blocked or perhaps the area I live in doesn't have reception, but I didn't have any luck finding other types of scanning to listen to. Although I have enjoyed being able to get the police scanning on this scanner and I feel safer that I have that information accessible.

I purchased the scanner for a church. Not only was it helpful for having a radio to be informed about local events, but the weather radio was very useful when bad weather aproached, and we needed to turn off our computers. The scanner was just plain fun and interesting...maybe a little disturbing at times. I would highly recommend this to anyone, especially a business, because this is an old church and built of thick concrete walls and radios don't usually work here, but this one does. Good product, easy to use!

My daughter loves this clock, especially because the singing and the nightlight that projects stars onto the ceiling (which is an unusable feature now). As a parent, I feel differently. The material is cheap, the music is low quality making it hard to understand the words, and we have yet to find a fm or am station it will pick up. There is not an auto off for the projection light and ours died out after 4 months. I could not find a way to get to the light bulb to change it, so my husband worked on it. He had to take out all the electronics in order to reach the light, which is fiber optic encased in a housing unit that does not come apart, so the light is unchangeable. I am very disappointed as the music and lights were the main selling point of this unit.

Just bought this at Target and it is a really cute little alarm clock. The stars on the ceiling are really cuteI just wish it had an auto off button for the stars because I can see the bulb burning out pretty quick if it is left on all night. You can wake up by radio, buzzer or a princess song and voice. I have no problem getting the AM/FM to work. It is a little annoying that it is a turn dial for the radio stations and not digital. I can't tell what station I have it on. My daughter is only 6 so she doesn't need to wake up to the radio anyway. I think it is really cute. After searching several sites for a child's bedside table clock, I finally found this pink castle radio alarm clock on Amazon.com. It is adorable! My daughter loves it, particularly because it not only projects stars on the ceiling but she can also listen to Cinderella singing or the AM/FM radio. She was formerly scared of the dark, but now she is quite comfortable to stay in bed listening to pretty music and watching the stars at night.

I just bought this clock for my Granddaughter's birthday on August 11th. She is turning 6 and is into "everything princess". Seems that just last weeek it was "Spongebob". When I saw this item displayed at our local military exchange, I knew what I was buying for her. I am so glad that I decided to open the box when I got home and test it out. First of all, the feel of the buttons and controls is beyond flimsy. I finally got an AM radio station tuned in by holding the clock in my hand and squiizing fairly hard on the tuner side of the clock. I can't believe the tuner is one if those cheesy wheel tuners where the station numbers are printed on the wheel itself. I mean, come on, we have single chip digital tuning that costs pennies. The ceiling projected "stars" is a nice touch and I can see my granddaughter using it as a nightlite and a gazxing point to drift off to sleep. I didn't even get to the FM tuner because I knew it was going to be not much better than the AM section. This company has taken an idea that could have made quite a stur in the preteen princess loving demographic but seems to have chosen to find the cheapest components out there to make this a less than satisfying trip into the Enchanted Forest. I will be returning the clock radio today and searching for something of better quality.
